Costco Surveillance DVR Replacing HDD with 4TB

  • Costco sells a video surveillance DVR from Lorex with a 1TB disk drive. It is relatively easy to replace that drive with a 4TB drive.
    There are drives available for that are configured specifically for surveillance systems. I don't know which brand is good and which is bad. My replacement drive has a 3 year warranty, and i guess we will find out, if it makes it or not.
    I had to replace mine, because I thought it was broken. After installing the new drive, it still didn't work. Checking out the power supply: Bummer! It could only deliver 6 Volts, and it needs 12V.
    Somehow the power supply broke.
    With a new power supply, i am up and running again with a much larger drive.

    Thanks for the video and the description. I had the same issue, replaced the HD with a new one, same issue as before. Checked power supply and it was 12 volts but when the power supply was plugged into the DVR, the voltage dropped down to 8 ( I had the DVR cover off like you did and checked power to ground and found out under a load, the voltage was dropping off). FYI, all other features worked like display on my tv and remote viewing.

      tpm369 great, just needs a new power supply. Cheap on ebay and amazon.

      @tpm369, what did you do to get it working? I have same issue as you. Got new power adapter but hdd still missing.

      @@jasonl8391 Hi, was the new power adaptor the same amperage output as the original? After I installed the new power adaptor in my unit, it worked. If you are handy and able to safely check the power with the cover off of the DVR, that would let you know that you for sure have 12 volts while under load. When you disconnect power and then reconnect power, do you hear the hard drive spin up? You might need to disconnect the cooling fan temporarily so you can hear the hard drive. That is what lead me to check that power supply while under load, I did not hear the hard drive spin up like they always do. And I think the only reason I heard the hard drive not spin up to full speed was because I had the cooling fan disconnected. Let me know if you have any further questions, I like this stuff.

    Just replaced my HD (same Lorex system). I bought a WD 2TB Purple HDD on amazon for $79. The reason I replaced it was because the original HD became really noisy. I'm sure it was on its way out so I just replaced it with a HD with twice the capacity, took 5 min. Thanks for the video, made taking the cover off a lot easier. Remember to format the New HD

    Why do you need to replace the HHD? My DVR keep showing on my screen no hhd install. What does that mean? I have an 2TB in my DVR now

      Bernard Del Castillo i needed to replace my HDD because it broke. Then it could show NO HDD on the screen. Another option is that the power supply broke, and it doesn’t make enough power to turn the HDD on.

    my Costco Lorex LHV1000 series, only 3 years old just died , i need HDD replacement any suggestion on reliable HDD? I expected lasted 7 or more years from Costco but obviously like everything else when warranty is over things start to breakdown.

      Many things die on this unit. The power supply died, that's why mine stopped working. The fan died on top of the CPU, i replaced that with a used one. The original HDD i replaced with a Seagate, because the original one was too small for me. It died within the warranty. I don't know what to tell you what HDD would last longer.

    How did you format the HDD? Via the DVR or a pc?

      You can format from the NVR settings from the storage option

    Can this be purchased separately or does the DVR come with cameras? I would like to buy a wireless camera amd bea able to buy a separate DVR for recording. Not sure if this can be done?
    Thanks

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Hamel This came as a set. If you buy cameras and DVRs separate, then both have to be compatible with each other. If you don't exactly know how this works it would be much easier to buy a set!!!

    Hi Do i have to use a Surveillance HD and if so can you tell me the difference? Thanks!

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you should, because they are different in a way, when the read/write head of the HDD does not have time to pause since the Surveillance is constantly writing to the disc, compared to a computer, that goes to sleep every once in a while.

      First thanks for the reply.....2nd....can I use a desktop HD to just test the unit before I buy an expensive surveillance HD ? I hate to spend money on a unit to find out its not the HD that is the problem.

    my lorex 8 camera system was stuck in a constant reboot loop. the answer was not the power supply. the fan on the heat sink on the motherboard had quit. replaced this fan now no problems.

      Vinod Badyal Sounds more like a bad power supply

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have the same system i show in my video, you could buy this a.co/hdEbNnL
      If not, you need to find out how much power you need for all the cameras and the DVR itself.
      The original power supply of my DVR broke too at one point. That seems to be an issue.

    This HDD shows an ERROR, and i have to send it in under warranty. Overall it lasted from Jul 29, 2016 until Nov 6, 2018
    That is two years and three month.
    I got it replaced by Seagate with a refurbished drive. The refurbished drive has only a 6 month warranty!? And i had to pay for shipping. th-cam.com/video/84jorbdlAUg/w-d-xo.html

      so what is your next move, change HDD again or buy new one.

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, i just got the replacement. I had to ship the broken drive to Seagate, and they sent me a new one under warranty.

    • @mygiguser
      @mygiguser  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But to answer your question: i think i cannot recommend Seagate, because it failed within warranty, and the replacement drive has only a 6 month warranty. That leaves me with 2 year 9 month worth of the promised 3 year warranty. A bad deal, if you ask me.
