      im no expert but from what i saw, the hard steel chassis bottomed out on the dirt, causing the tyres momentum to dig into the corner of the dirt wall. for a moment in time the entire car’s weight was suspended on the underside of the chassis; as the tyre’s suspension slowly caught up with the car.
      My thought was, if the tyres had more rigidity and psi, then perhaps the car wouldnt have bounced and well. i dont really know but im just pointing out the obvious ideas i had. Monster trucks flip all the time, but have you ever seen a drift car flip! very unlikely because less bouncy.

      When you goe up such an incline more air give the car a bascet ball effect a ball with no air can't bounce plus If you are confused I am not arguing

    I like how ONE guy directed the whole recovery. Nothing more annoying than like 10 people yelling to do this or that. Let the people who are more experienced do the directing rather than a bunch of yahoos trying to add their two cents.

    Having done Widow countless times, this video is actual a really good teachable moment for others. That first bump there, or the bulb is notorious for rolling high lift, high power rigs. Widow is best handled slow, controlled and smarter lines. Patrol owners tend to drive all right foot and little else. Hence why after the second bounce back his lift was working against him and he needed to tow.

    my thoughts:
    a great exemplary recovery, it hurts seeing that rig rolling down (and that is not about money ) and I am glad to see the driver in rather good health walking away; but I have to say the suspension seems quite soft or overladed and after the first two trials maybe looking for a different line or winching would have been less (pride) damaging but the driver then just wanted it so badly to wok out (what we all understand) and the car one goatish ... a lesson learned for all of us - and before every picks on me: I know it is easy to be smarter afterwards as a non concerned.

      If you review his 1st attempt, you should notice his left rear axle moved forward. Someone on the hill should have said something about the movement of the axle. The hardware holding it together may have fractured. It couldn't support the weight on the hill. I could see this problem. Why didn't someone tell him. If someone did and he did it anyway then that's on him.

      @@pathbelow6652 I completely agree but I'm pretty sure that the reason it moves is due to the suspension geometry. The short links let the rear end unload and instead of pushing the vehicle forward it pushes it upward

      Pride and joy? My pride and joy is my drag car(mustang) being a pride and joy I take care of it. My off road truck is just that, an off road truck. 91 ranger with 35"s and welded diffs. Chopped the frame and now has a 103 wheelbase. Body gets scuffed, whatever, it's a off road truck. Why anyone would take a nice vehicle off reading is beyond me unless they are driving on dirt roads/trails. Actual wheeling? I use a beater because I'm going to be rocking on it hard. When in doubt, throttle out! Lol! Certainly would never take a pride and joy where I off road!

I built a focus for my kid to race in street class, after the season was over the wife wanted to take her new car off the road for the winter so we plated it and that's what she's driving. Certainly never hurt it to put a seasons worth of passes on it.

  • @MOAB-UT
    @MOAB-UT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Glad you are ok. There were multiple clues this was a bad idea. Never bounce a rig and never allow that front end to come up so high. The high lift and springy suspension also didn't help. Sometimes the best way is to walk away. Trucks have a reverse great for a reason. After multiple informatively failed attempts, caution gets thrown to the wind and this is the result.

    Final Comment I promise... at 0:29 you can see the rear radius arm is at nearly 75? or so degrees. The suspension is completely extended. Further the front is now light and it is actually pivoting on the rear tire; instead of the suspension compressing and the rear coming down. it pivots and the front comes up. It seems like the arm (and the rear diff) has trouble moving back up because the pressure (Weight) is being applied to the arm which is nearly vertical, and cant compress the rear spring very efficiently, I think this added to the whole problem. too steep of terrain with the lift it has. hard to see maybe. When he brakes in reverse he is almost already at the point of no return. Maybe some straps to limit full extension of the suspension on hills of that grade..plus all the other stuff i said before..lol sorry I cant help but look at this video and analyze it again and again...I have almost did that plenty of times, in the days before everyone had a camera. Great learning tool this video is.Thanks

We push ourselves to our limitations but also learn from them. As long as everyone is ok in the end, that's all that matters and everything else is secondary.

    That's not MY favorite silver Patrol in AU???
    It's been a while since I last posted about the most capable vehicle I've ever seen (silver Patrol on 35's).
    I've snagged a triple-locked 80 series since then. And I wouldn't thought a second time about trying that hill. Can't believe the outcome.
    Crazy!
    Great vid as always!

  • @philelliott5327
    @philelliott5327 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Centre of gravity is way too high in that car due to excessive lift and the accessories stuck all over it. Every add on above drive line height makes it less stable, also the anti roll bars appear to be disconnected to give more articulation. A standard 4x4 might not have had enough clearance but would be much less likely to roll over.

      That's usually my 1st thought. Lifts increase the danger to what is already unstable to begin with. In this case, with out the lift he would not have even been attempting it. (which would have been way smarter than challenging it) The 2nd best solution would have been having safety straps on it from the get go to avoid it from flipping in the 1st place. Especially after the 1st attempt showing how problematic it was going to be.

      Looks like he may have had a front diff-lock engaged. On a climb like this, it will cause the front end to slide sideways. It's almost happened to me. Now I only use my front locker when it's absolutely necessary.
      Another thing.. radius arm suspension has poor geometry and causes the front to lift on steep climbs.
      Or he just had some really bad luck, lol.

    When you've got all the gear but no idea.
    Launching a 3 tonne patrol up a sharp jump up with a hole to one side...yeah that was always gonna go well. With a good line and diff locks you should never need to attack a hill like this except for if it's deep sand or mud.

    I noticed on my Range rover classic LWB. When going over very similar terrain my vehicle tended to bounce like that, each time it bounces it loses traction. on an steep incline like in this video. I came to the conclusion that i had a dual problem. I had a lot of bounce from the tires and the coil springs. This was made more obvious when unloaded, with only me in the drivers seat, and no passengers, and no gear in or on top.. I feel my springs are Just more than slightly too stiff when the vehicle is unloaded. It is like waiting to launch me upwards whenever the weight of the vehicle lands mostly on one wheel, and mostly in the rear. My RRC is far better on the trail with a fair load on it, it tends to keep its wheels on the ground far more effectively. The bounce is controlled somewhat by the weight it is carrying. I think it is much harder to spring/rebound the vehicle off the ground if the initial/constant load is heavier, at least for my springs. My RRC had air suspension, changed to coils, by someone else. they were old man emu's springs with only 2 inch lift. I didn't think that was the best for my uses, so I switched to the Terra Firma 2 inch lift medium duty version. The situation was the same, though the tera firmas rode better on the road. I then added a roof rack, some skid plates, and a box in the cargo area that carries my recovery equipment and tools, with every 150 lbs.of weight added it seemed to improve. With 3 or 4 people in and a might to medium load on the rack it stays planted. Hardly any carnival ride lauches into the air. Tires with a lot of sidewall at certain pressures seem to make this worse, at least for me. I am glad no one was hurt, if there had been 4 people in the rig it could have been worse I suppose. But the hill was unloading the front and the back springs were locked and loaded..Once up hill direction was lost the inevitable happened. Your videos are as always great to watch.

    • @davidcox4038
      @davidcox4038 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one main think that you and everyone else forget to blame for the bounce is the shockers, if you go over a rail crossings at speed (100 km/h) and then at low speed (10km/h) if it bounces more at low speed then your shocks are not going to work offroad properly eg. cousing more bounce than it should have like in the video.

    • @alexkenley1
