there's this anecdote, I can't remember the source, that one reporter supposedly asked Archie Moore if there had been a moment in his fight against Marciano where he realized he was in some deep trouble, and Moore went "Yes, the first round." The reporter was understandably confused, cause the first round was the one where Moore knocked Marciano down, and Moore continued "I hit him harder than I have ever hit any man, and he just got up mad".

When I was little my Dad used to watch boxing and I would just watch him watch boxing. My Dad fought in the military and was really good. His favorite fighter was Rocky Marciano. So everytime I got a chance to see a film of the Rock fighting, I would watch him. I read every book I could find, every article. I was obsessed because my Dad was my hero and I wanted to know more about his heroes. When Dad sparred and even taught me and my brother he taught us Rocky’s style. Staying low, constant head movement, etc. I remember the first time I saw Joe Frazier box, I knew “this guy is emulating Rocky.” He soon became my favorite fighter. Thanks to TH-cam I’ve long since pulled up every fight available of the Rock’s and it’s just incredible. It makes me realize what an amazing talent he was, but mainly makes me miss my Dad.

Rocky was such an articulate respectful intelligent man out of the ring. I always enjoy listening to his interviews as he can really hold your attention when speaking. In the ring he was a relentless wrecking machine of incredible stamina and a chin of iron. He knew the game inside and out and knew his opponents weak spots and vulnerabilities long before he got in the ring with them. A true legend.

My Dad loved him. He's definitely my top all time favorite. Of course his time was long before mine, but I always love watching his old fights. Definitely one of the best to ever do it, and one of the nicest guys anyone could know from what is said.

Most people openly admit that the versions of Charles and Walcott that he fought were far from prime (The Joe Louis fight really doesn't even deserve to be brought up). So it isn't the quality of Rocky's competition that his reputation is based on among the greats, it is that famous record 49-0. If Rocky's 49-0 record is the basis of his greatness then the fighters on that record should be the very best that were available. But by my reckoning that is the furthest thing from the truth. Infact when you look at the highest ranked fighters of the era, and then you look at his record, it's scandalous how many he didn't fight. Many of the ones he DID choose to fight are just as scandalous. Name ANY TOP 10 RING HEAVYWEIGHT CONTENDER today who would still be rated in the top 10 if he lost to an unrated 12-2 opponent (James) and a light heavyweight contender? Layne would've been gone from the top 10. LONG GONE. Meanwhile, also in 1952, Roland LaStarza wins a decision over Dan Bucceroni (after LOSING to him FIVE months earlier) and Roland follows that up with a LOSS to the 14-9-2 Rocky Jones. Then Roland wins a decision over Rocky Jones. Neither of these guys, Rex and Roland, at this point, should've been rated in the top 10 AT ALL. They wouldn't be today, that's for damn sure. Both Layne and Roland ... LONG GONE. Then out of nowhere Rex Layne wins a 10 round decision in Utah against Ezzard Charles, in Ezzard's first fight after losing his fourth fight with Walcott. Ezzard stopped Layne in their previous fight. In their third encounter a couple months later, Ezzard would drop him three or four times and beat Layne again. BUT, on this night, the fight goes the distance. And the LONE official and "celebrity referee" Jack Dempsey scored it two rounds Rex, one Round Ezzard ... SEVEN ROUNDS EVEN for the local boy Rex. And the fans cheered. And the two Utah papers had Charles winning, by the way. Today, that would be SCANDALOUS. Layne clearly wasn't better than Ezzard. But based on that (2 rounds to 1, with seven even) scorecard ... REX LAYNE - who today wouldn't be rated going into that fight at all - gets rated #1 by Ring. And, in his next fight, before getting dropped and battered all over the ring by an angry Ezzard Charles, Rex takes on ROLAND ... coming off his rematch with the no-name Rocky Jones ... and Rex LOSES to Roland ... on what was considered a controversial decision, too. And Roland gets ranked #1. (Rating Rex #1 was bad enough. Passing the #1 rating along to Roland is probably worse.) Then Marciano signs to fight Roland ... because ROLAND IS THE #1 CONTENDER. And everyone goes "Well, Roland must've deserved it. He beat the #1 contender!" It's laughable. You want to talk about a dreadful series of ratings and situations culminating in Roland getting rated #1. That is brutal. Today, Marciano, Roland, Layne, celebrity referee Dempsey, and the entire Ring Ratings board, the National Boxing Assocation ... would be thrown under the bus. Back then, people were like, "Okay" Scandalous scoring. Ineptitude by the ratings body. Take your pick.

It was obviously a predetermined carefully hand-picked set-up.* Boxing-elites, Italian-mafioso, and the IRS really needed Joe to be ranked #1 inorder to get their Louis vs. Marciano $$-SHOW-$$. The only loyalty the Italian-mob had was to $$$. Hey, they took 50% of Marciano's earnings and all ticket sales, all in all $2 Million. $2 Million in 1955 is equivalent to $21 Million today. After boxing Joe ended up in the pro wrestling circuit and they still took his money. But that gig finished when Cowboy Rocky Lee lunged onto him with both feet, his boots colliding with Louis' torso. The crash cracked three of his ribs. It left him with a cardiac contusion and officially ended his stint as a wrestler. Children used to send him one dollar in the mail. In his biography he said a child walked up and handed him a dime. It's virtually impossible that Walcott was even remotely prime when he fought the little 184 lb light heavyweight Marciano. Rocky himself said Walcott was only 90% of himself @ 'The Marciano Tapes' #3.* Walcott's most notable victories include wins over light heavyweight Charles, light heavyweight Maxim and light heavyweight Johnson. Many defamation lawsuits have been filed but all failed. Little Rocky was seriously messed up. His friends tried to help but he refused. He caused his own demise through his insatiable desire for sex and money.
Marciano boarded a small Cessna 172 with pilot Glenn Belz, and Frank Farrell, the son of Louis Thomas Fratto, born Luigi Tommaso Giuseppe Fratto, also known as "Lew Farrell" and "Cock-eyed", an American labor racketeer and organized crime figure in Chicago, Illinois, and Des Moines, Iowa, from the 1930s to his death in 1967. A massive storm system challenged Belz's relative inexperience (231 hours of total flight time) as the plane flew west from Chicago over Iowa. Trying to land at a small airfield outside Newton, Belz crashed the plane into a tree about two miles short of the intended runway. On August 31, 1969, all aboard, including Marciano, died on impact. It was all Rocky's fault, he pressured the amateur pilot into flying even though he knew they were headed towards severe thunderstorms. Why? What was so important in Des Moines? His business was loansharking and he had to collect 35K. Which is equivalent to 290K today.

there's this anecdote, I can't remember the source, that one reporter supposedly asked Archie Moore if there had been a moment in his fight against Marciano where he realized he was in some deep trouble, and Moore went "Yes, the first round."
The reporter was understandably confused, cause the first round was the one where Moore knocked Marciano down, and Moore continued "I hit him harder than I have ever hit any man, and he just got up mad".

When I was little my Dad used to watch boxing and I would just watch him watch boxing. My Dad fought in the military and was really good. His favorite fighter was Rocky Marciano. So everytime I got a chance to see a film of the Rock fighting, I would watch him. I read every book I could find, every article. I was obsessed because my Dad was my hero and I wanted to know more about his heroes. When Dad sparred and even taught me and my brother he taught us Rocky’s style. Staying low, constant head movement, etc. I remember the first time I saw Joe Frazier box, I knew “this guy is emulating Rocky.” He soon became my favorite fighter. Thanks to TH-cam I’ve long since pulled up every fight available of the Rock’s and it’s just incredible. It makes me realize what an amazing talent he was, but mainly makes me miss my Dad.

Private Rocco Marchegiano poses for a mugshot after his arrest for felony assault and robbery, while serving in the US Army during World War 2.
Marciano, along with another solider named James Murphy had been accused of robbing two Englishmen and assaulting them. When questioned, Marciano and Murphy claimed to have no knowledge of the incident but after the victims' items were found in their possession they were forced to change their story.
Despite pleading his innocence, Marciano was found guilty and sentenced to 7 years hard labour but this was eventually reduced to 3 years - Marciano however only ended up serving 22 months. Murphy on the other hand was sentenced to 10 years. Marciano received a dishonorable discharge but mysteriously was allowed to re-join the army for a 12 month period in order to receive an honorable discharge. *"In all my years i have never heard of a dishonorable flipping back into an honorable. The fix was in. He was already protected."*
Marciano boarded a small Cessna 172 with pilot Glenn Belz, and Frank Farrell, the son of Louis Thomas Fratto, born Luigi Tommaso Giuseppe Fratto, also known as "Lew Farrell" and "Cock-eyed", an American labor racketeer and organized crime figure in Chicago, Illinois, and Des Moines, Iowa, from the 1930s to his death in 1967. A massive storm system challenged Belz's relative inexperience (231 hours of total flight time) as the plane flew west from Chicago over Iowa. Trying to land at a small airfield outside Newton, Belz crashed the plane into a tree about two miles short of the intended runway. On August 31, 1969, all aboard, including Marciano, died on impact. It was all Rocky's fault, he pressured the amateur pilot into flying even though he knew they were headed towards severe thunderstorms. Why? What was so important in Des Moines? His business was loansharking and he had to collect 35K. Which is equivalent to 290K today.
Rocky was such an articulate respectful intelligent man out of the ring. I always enjoy listening to his interviews as he can really hold your attention when speaking. In the ring he was a relentless wrecking machine of incredible stamina and a chin of iron. He knew the game inside and out and knew his opponents weak spots and vulnerabilities long before he got in the ring with them. A true legend.
Marciano had been married to the same woman, the former Barbara Cousins, the daughter of a Brockton cop, since Dec. 31, 1950, but the union unraveled long before the decade was done. Barbara tended to obesity, had a serious drinking problem and smoked heavily-she would die of lung cancer in 1974-whereas her husband's tastes ran more to svelte, statuesque blondes, that single glass of wine and smokeless rooms. "He couldn't stand his married life" says Saccone "There was nothing compatible between them."

41 year old light heavyweight Archie Moore had already been fightin "20yrs" with 178 fights before facing little Rocky in 1955. Exactly 95% of his 141 TKO's came against welterweights, middleweights, light heavyweights and small cruiserweights. Moore Lost (23) times and was KO'd (7) times.
Meantime little cruiserweight Rocky Marciano only fought a measly "8yrs" with only 49 fights before he abruptly quit during his prime at only 31yrs of age. If you eliminate his debut fight he actually fought "7yrs" because there was a 15 month gap between his 1st fight and 2nd fight.
Little Rocky quitting so soon is not only shameful but not fair to other genuine Heavyweights that he's surpassed in the top 10 rankings. No way in hell this little dude should be ranked higher than Holmes Lewis Foreman Vitali Wladimir Holyfield Tyson Bowe Liston Fury Wilder.

Most people openly admit that the versions of Charles and Walcott that he fought were far from prime (The Joe Louis fight really doesn't even deserve to be brought up). So it isn't the quality of Rocky's competition that his reputation is based on among the greats, it is that famous record 49-0. If Rocky's 49-0 record is the basis of his greatness then the fighters on that record should be the very best that were available. But by my reckoning that is the furthest thing from the truth. Infact when you look at the highest ranked fighters of the era, and then you look at his record, it's scandalous how many he didn't fight. Many of the ones he DID choose to fight are just as scandalous.
Top fighters Marciano definitely should have fought that he didn't.

In 1952, Rex Layne LOST to no-name Willie James. Then Layne fought a 500 journeyman Bill Peterson TWO TIMES and won both. Then Layne LOST AGAIN to Harry Matthews, a light heavyweight contender.
Name ANY TOP 10 RING HEAVYWEIGHT CONTENDER today who would still be rated in the top 10 if he lost to an unrated 12-2 opponent (James) and a light heavyweight contender?
Layne would've been gone from the top 10. LONG GONE.
Meanwhile, also in 1952, Roland LaStarza wins a decision over Dan Bucceroni (after LOSING to him FIVE months earlier) and Roland follows that up with a LOSS to the 14-9-2 Rocky Jones.
Then Roland wins a decision over Rocky Jones.
Neither of these guys, Rex and Roland, at this point, should've been rated in the top 10 AT ALL. They wouldn't be today, that's for damn sure.

Then out of nowhere Rex Layne wins a 10 round decision in Utah against Ezzard Charles, in Ezzard's first fight after losing his fourth fight with Walcott. Ezzard stopped Layne in their previous fight. In their third encounter a couple months later, Ezzard would drop him three or four times and beat Layne again.
BUT, on this night, the fight goes the distance. And the LONE official and "celebrity referee" Jack Dempsey scored it two rounds Rex, one Round Ezzard ... SEVEN ROUNDS EVEN for the local boy Rex. And the fans cheered. And the two Utah papers had Charles winning, by the way.
Today, that would be SCANDALOUS. Layne clearly wasn't better than Ezzard.
But based on that (2 rounds to 1, with seven even) scorecard ... REX LAYNE - who today wouldn't be rated going into that fight at all - gets rated #1 by Ring.
And, in his next fight, before getting dropped and battered all over the ring by an angry Ezzard Charles, Rex takes on ROLAND ... coming off his rematch with the no-name Rocky Jones ... and Rex LOSES to Roland ... on what was considered a controversial decision, too.
And Roland gets ranked #1. (Rating Rex #1 was bad enough. Passing the #1 rating along to Roland is probably worse.)
Then Marciano signs to fight Roland ... because ROLAND IS THE #1 CONTENDER.
And everyone goes "Well, Roland must've deserved it. He beat the #1 contender!"
It's laughable.
You want to talk about a dreadful series of ratings and situations culminating in Roland getting rated #1.
That is brutal.
Today, Marciano, Roland, Layne, celebrity referee Dempsey, and the entire Ring Ratings board, the National Boxing Assocation ... would be thrown under the bus.

Roland LaStarza's interview about his two fights with Marciano: *"I'm sure as income taxes that I was the winner. Every reporter there said I was robbed. Before the first fight Al Weill promised us a return immediately if the fight was close. The next day he said, 'We don't want to go back'. After that he avoided us for 3 ½ years."*
LaStarza discounted the stories about the damage Marciano inflicted on his arms in their second fight. *"There was a rumor after the fight that he hurt my shoulders and arms a lot, but the truth was that I had weak elbows from the fight before, and they were giving me trouble. With the state of my elbows I really could not give a good account of myself. During the fight I was under the influence of pain killers and I really needed them. Marciano couldn't hit me on the behind for the first five rounds.Then in the sixth I got hit on my bad elbow, the strength went out of me, and I just stood there from then on. Walcott lost more than 4 years when he was KO'd by a tremendous right cross smash from the 6' 4" 256 lb giant Abe Simon in 1940-02-12. Carbo and Weill had complete control over Rocky and carefully selected his opponents.
