    Out of all the "non professional" football podcasts, this has been the best discussion on FFP. Also, re the Everton fans having to suffer the points deduction instead of the owners suffering financially from their mistakes, this is exactly what happened during the 2008 financial crisis where ordinary people had to bail out big banks. The German football ownership model is, essentially, socialism and I for one am all for it.

      Do you also apply "but the fans" to the City and Chelsea situations? I have some sympathy for Everton because it really just was a complex financial situation that they somewhat mismanaged, but the other two clubs were built up on offshore accounts and fake sponsorships and most of their respective supporters were at least casually aware of those situations but chose to overlook them. Relegation is too good a punishment for both those clubs, imo. I would rather see them dissolved entirely, along with stripping their titles and awarding them to the runners-up they beat.

    First of all the Everton punishment wasn’t a disgrace. They broke the rules, they were advised not to buy more players, they continued to do so and missed the cut off.
    Also, whilst they were £20m over the threshold the premier league advice is that clubs should be on £0 losses and they give clubs a !!!£100m!!! buffer for losses and Everton were £20m over that.
    They gained a sporting advantage and would most likely be relegated now, 10 points is nothing.

      The problem is that you fail to understand that the transfers were structured in a way to align with the supervisions the league warned them about so the fees are paid off in small amounts every year. Then you got to factor that teams who tried to break the football leagues only got 3, million pound fine and teams that went into administration had lesser punishment. Ur correct with regards to breaking the rules but the severity of the punishment is severe. Especially when considering there's a strong chance a majority of football clubs do dodgy business. It was just to make the league look proactive meaning it was not just.

    Everton in 2021 were given a plan to follow to avoid breaking FFP after going to the premier league and being warned they were going off track then signing new players, they had unfair advantage and possibly other teams would’ve been relegated. Other fans would’ve stayed up if they hadn’t. I think they’ve got very lucky it’s fallen in a season when it might not send them down. Likewise, I look forward to seeing Chelsea and Man City stripped of their achievements and relegated.

      That is literally not what happened. They complied with league and all their signings had to be passed by the league to be finalised. The league changed the rule on loan interest a year into Everton's loan for stadium funding that 19.5m is that interest. That's it that is the only charge. they where informed in December of the rule change and charged in march. Incidentally Chelsea admitted to 4 accounts of a breach last November but a date for their punishments have not been set.

  • @braingum8509
    @braingum8509 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The thing with the 'You shouldn't punish the fans' argument is the fact those fans have enjoyed living high on the horse because of these breaches. Winning cups, signing star players or staying in the Prem ahead of teams that may have otherwise. Points deductions and relegations are just balancing things out. Besides, I would think teams like City and Chelsea would be glad to have a chance to shake off all their plastic supporters, and think of all the financial benefits for teams in lower leagues if they got to play a team like city at least twice?
    Juventus and Rangers both paid the price and managed to bounce back, why should prem teams be exempt from severe punishments?

  • @kelvinburn7743
    @kelvinburn7743 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    As a Toon fan I've read the FFP rules to death and still don't fully understand them. But I understood why we had to sell Maxi to sign Livremento and Hall, even though it felt like cutting our arm off. It's obvious that City and Chelsea had come to that decision years earlier and thought "fuck it. Lets' win everything and see what happens later". They should suffer a Juve and drop as far down as possible.
    I'm gutted for Everton fans though. Their punishment seems unnecessary and I hope they survive this season.

      Regarding "time-barred," the Premier League is counting on the fact that unlike UEFA, there is no statute of limitations. What's interesting is that there were effectively two reasons suggested for why FFP was introduced in the first place: The declared one, which is that the league didn't want poorer clubs to gamble by spending money they didn't have trying to rise up the table (and risk bankruptcy if it failed), and the cynics' one, which is that the big teams didn't want new rich owners to be able to simply buy their way into the top table. Everton are clearly in the first category, and have been punished harshly. Man City are clearly in the second category, so I guess we'll wait to find out whether the cynics were right.

    When you are talking about statute of limitations and illegal documents, under the Premier league rules, those don't exist as its not a criminal court, and there is no appeal process, and they can't go to CAS. This is why city are delaying and not producing documents as they exist and they know it. So the Premier league can go back as far as they need to, this is why Chelsea fc and Man City fc owners are really worried.

    All of these financial rules are an absolute load of bollocks. If the Premier League really wants to uphold sporting integrity, why not introduce a salary cap? Instead, it implements these ridiculous and ineffective half measures. If we’re being completely honest, why should an owner of a football club not be able to put in however much money into their club that they want? If Saudi Arabia or Abu Dhabi want to pump £1 billion into Newcastle or City, let them. The only reason I can see why they’re not allowed to is because the old guard are so desperate to hold on to their hegemonic status.

    It's funny hearing Everton fans complaining that they've had a 10 point deduction for a much smaller offence, they clearly don't know how the legal system works.
    Everton had 1 charge of spending 20 mil over their budget, they pleaded guilty, so there was no trial & they skipped straight to sentencing, because there's no point having a trial for someone who's admitting they're guilty, it's a waste of time, that's why the Everton process is much quicker.
    Man City on the other hand have pleaded not guilty, so the burden of proof is on the premier league to prove the charges brought against them, that's why there's a trial, also the fact there's 115 charges, it's going to take so much longer to go over every single one of those with a fine tooth comb & debate every single one in court, that's why it's a much more drawn out process with Man City. It works the same way in relation to any criminal court case, why do you think YNW Melly has been fighting his double homicide charges since 2019? It's because the case is complicated & it takes a lot of work to both prove & deny any wrongdoing in a case a serious as that. Likewise with the Tate brothers, their trial won't be for another year or two because it's a complicated case. It isn't that Everton haven't done anything wrong, they broke the rules & deserved the punishment they got, but their case is different to the Man City case & therefore there were different time scales involved.
    Ultimately though, if Everton were docked 10 points for a single 20 million violation, then Man City should be straight up kicked out of the league if they're found guilty of everything they've been accused of which is far worse.

    Chelsea and city aren’t even in the same bracket when it comes to this😂
    City have actually been charged with over 100 charges, Chelsea haven’t been charged with anything. People only bring them up due to the money spent without realizing they’ve also sold millions of pounds worth of players which was straight profit on the books and also almost halved the wage bill compared to last season.
    A lot of people are not educated on the situation.

      Chelsea haven’t been charged with anything. they have admitted to 4 breaches. Their new owner said the accounts had hidden payments through private accounts to hide charges. Chelsea are fucked.

    Chelsea fan here, I like Josh but I think he's coping because of a fear that we could get fucked too. Everton deserved the punishment and if we are found guilty we will deserve it too and so will city.

    Sorry these comments they got no sporting advantage or fans shouldn't be impacted shows the real lack of education for these guys. Building a stadium will in time give a sporting advantage with more revenue etc and build something like city have over a period of time. While evertons is harsh they breached the rules. It's also. Very convenient the point deduction happend now and not last season as they woukd be relegated but will be safe this season, enough points on the board and only a couple point behind safety with a much better team. No real impact. City's fans know what their owners were doing and still supported it, still like to play victim about 115 charges.
    Points deduction or relegation will impact city for 1 year only and fines will mean nothing to these owners. Something serious has to happen but premier are to scared to really do anything as could force clubs to super league and their money train is gone
