    Question: if I bevel the edge by 15 degrees to match the legs, will edge banding be more difficult to apply?

    • @TrainingHandsAcademy

      Application no, trimming maybe a little. I would try it on a scrap piece before doing it on the real thing. Let me know how it goes.

    Hi..l like ur presentation...it was very simple to understand..u made it sound so easy...l would like to ask u few questions ...other than the aesthetics ...why do we need to edge band? Does it make the plywood last longer ? Does it prevent water entering the plywood core ? Is it necessary to edge band the sides that we don't see? Please do enlighten me. Thanks in advance.

    • @TrainingHandsAcademy
      @TrainingHandsAcademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Edge banding is used both to protect and finish off the edge of the raw plywood. I wouldn't say it makes the plywood last long, but does prevent contaminants like water/moisture from entering. In general I do not finish the edges that are not visible. Bottom line, it's done mostly for aesthetic. Hope that helps.

    • @TrainingHandsAcademy
      @TrainingHandsAcademy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never cut 2mm banding with mine. However, I just measured the cutter and it looks like it can handle 2mm (that is really close to the max). Just double check before you buy the trimmer of your choice

    Nice demonstration. One question. How do you trim the banding when you are working on plywood that is already installed. I have cabinets I am redoing and the fronts of the shelves need banding. I can't start at an edge because there are vertical pieces of wood in the way.

    • @TrainingHandsAcademy
      @TrainingHandsAcademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! I use a straight blade (or utility blade) and hold it flush with the top or bottom of the shelf to cut the excess material off closest to where the shelf intersects the side of the cabinet. I cut just enough material off to get my trimmer in there to finish trimming the remaining material. After that I use some fine sandpaper to polish the edges. Hope that make sense, if not hit me up on IG where we can chat and share pictures.

    My issue with the purpose-made edge banding irons is that they are stupidly expensive. It's just a heating element with a handle. Why so pricey? You can buy a brand new clothing iron for as little as 1/4 the price - Amazon has one for 14 bucks, for instance.
    I was fortunate in that I already own a heat gun for electronics. That worked fine. I just worked in 6 or 7 inch sections and followed up immediately with a roller.
    My project was a little different from yours. It was a 28-inch square base for a turntable. I radiused the corners, so I didn't have a sharp corner to start from. I just started in the middle of the back edge and went clear around the entire panel. Used nearly 10 feet of birch edge banding. When I got back to the starting point, before heating the ends, I overlapped them and trimmed both ends at the same time with a mallet thump on my 1-inch chisel. A little TimberMate filled the tiny gap.
    I'm really happy with how it came out, especially since I'm a newbie woodworker.
    I guess since I was looking for an edge banding iron via Google, they added this video to my recommendations. A day late unfortunately. But I still enjoyed it.
    Thanks for all your informative content.
