LiftMaster 8365: Door Won't Close and Lights Blink.

  • Diagnostic code on the opener is 1 blink on the Up arrow, and 2 blinks on the Down arrow. This means there is an issue with the safety sensor wiring.
    So just recently one of our garage door openers encountered a problem where you hit the button to close the door, but instead of closing, the lights just blink. This is usually an issue with the safety sensors near the bottom of the track. If these sensors are either obstructed, or not working, the door will not close normally, but will open fine. The opener lights will also blink 10 times if there is a safety sensor issue. In the interim, you can force-close the door by pressing and holding either the wall button, or the down arrow on the opener until it fully closes, but the remotes will not work.
    Wiring issues can sometimes be tough to trace, but I think I did find the issue that ours was having.

    Aware that my son usually checks TH-cam when he has something that needs fixing, when my garage door quit closing I checked and found this video. I watched the whole video, and before heading to the garage where I immediately found that the problem was one of the sensors on the lower door. It had apparently been bumped out of position. A very quick fix. So thankful that a repairman wasn't necessary.

    Extremely helpful! I had opened the cover to program another remote and all of a sudden it won’t shut. The error codes shown indicated an error code of 1 up and 1 down. Come to find out, a wire got knocked out just enough from the unit up top. The light trick (turn on the light and look for the other lights) was so helpful as was the error codes! Also, comments from the vid were useful! Thanks so much!!!

    Intermittent connections are a pain! Just when you think it's fixed, it messes up again. Seems like it is up at the motor side from the way it cleared up as you moved the sensor wires.
    Not a bad idea to get that staple out of the sheathing down at the sensor end! Perhaps a dab of silicone will seal the hole up, and not be too noticeable.

    • @Sharkie626
      @Sharkie626  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it could have been that. I told Jay that before I started recording the video, I had done some stuff above the powerhead, and it still had the error code. Maybe the wires needed time to relax back out or something, and I recorded the video just in time before it fixed itself. Really hard to tell. But at
      the same time, I am glad I fixed that staple, and moved those wire nuts. Definitely could have avoided a future problem right there too.

    • @dynatrak

  • @jaykay18

    Right church, wrong pew. After you looked at the sensors the first time, when you went back up on the ladder, the lights were flashing. You then inspected the wiring up there, and the error code went away. You have officially isolated the problem. Fixing the staple wasn't a bad idea, but I don't think it was the cause of the issue.
    Either the tight bends of the wire above the opener was the culprit, or where the wires plug in developed some sort of dirty connection. Wiggling everything made it work. My dad had an acronym for that. FATTD. I'll email you with what it means since it's not safe to post here.

    • @Sharkie626
      @Sharkie626  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, so then I'll just say 10 Hail Mary's before tonight!
      Before I made the video, I did play around with the wires a bit by the opener. I did take them out, give them a cleaning, and then put them back in. Same thing. It could have been those tight bends, but I did look at I believe two of them before recording, the code was still there. Maybe it needed time to relax back out, not sure. As far as I could see, those wires that were just above where the hangers intersected looked okay. I remember being totally sure that they didn't get pinched when you and I were reassembling everything. I could have another look at them again to be absolutely sure. This is one of the issues with electrical problems. Making sure it doesn't come back.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      With some spare wire long enough to span the length of the original, and a VOM on the ohms scale, having one person wiggling the wire and another reading the meter, would verify the failure point. If no trouble is found, then it's where the connector that goes into the opener is.

    • @Sharkie626
      @Sharkie626  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jaykay18 Makes sense. If this issue does return, I'll look more closely at those spots above the opener; the tight bends and above the hangers again.
      I can tell you one thing. This sure felt like a classic Octember moment!

    Just a tip for you with the sensors. They both have a light. The sending sensor has the yellow light and it sends the invisible beam to the receiving sensor with the green light. The yellow light should always be on, but the green light on the receiving sensor will only be on when the sensors are aligned and not obstructed. If one or both lights don't turn on, then it's most likely a wire issue or defective sensor. You just check the code from the opener at that point. It could also be sunlight in certain situations

    • @carolync9408
      @carolync9408 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your comment is Extremely helpful. The yellow and green are both on, but the still will not close. The wiring looks okay as far as the see. May have to call a tech

      You are spot on with the sunlight effect. That was my problem, it was that certain time of the day where the sun is glaring straight at my green sensor, so I just changed the angle a bit and voila!
      It works.

    I had this very same problem. Garage door opener installed about 3 months ago and functioned fine.. all of a sudden lights on both sensors went out. same arrows flashing on the head unit, got a sensor error on the myQ app on my phone. The wired button in the garage would close the door if you held the button down. Down near my sensors on the garage, one of the wires was shorted out w a staple that was placed to secure it.. oddly enough, before i removed the staple, both sensors were not lighting up.. one should be orange, one should be green if wired properly. It was not a malallignment problem w the sensors. After i removed the staple, problem solved. If there is a malallignment problem or something obstructing the sensors, it seems that the green one will blink, provided that they are wired correctly and functioning.

    • @kokomal2686
      @kokomal2686 ปีที่แล้ว
