Robert Morris Accuser Shares Her Story, Faith Journey

  • The fallout continues after Robert Morris resigned from Gateway Church over furor following allegations he molested a 12-year-old girl in the 1980s. Morris, 62, who resigned from Gateway last week, offered an initial statement on the allegations against him in which he again used the term “young lady.”
In that statement, he described what he said was “inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady” in a home he stayed in during his 20s. “It was kissing and petting and not intercourse, but it was wrong,” he said. The preacher went on to state that the behavior happened on “several occasions” over a number of years.
Morris said the situation was “brought to light” in 1987. He said he confessed, repented, sought counseling, and returned to ministry two years later with the support of the victim’s father. For the record, the accuser, Cindy Clemishire - now 54 - has denied the latter claim as well as the notion she was a "young lady" at the time, claiming the abuse started when she was just a child.
Clemishire joins CBN News to detail her allegations, to share her faith journey, and explain the reasons she's speaking out.
HERE IS GATEWAY'S STATEMENT: Dear Gateway Church family,
The Board of Elders wants to reach out to you personally to address the recent events in our church and to provide you with an update.
This is an unthinkable and painful time in our church. Our church congregation is hurt and shaken, and we know that you have many important questions. We want to answer as many of your questions as we can at this point, and we ask that you continue to extend us grace as we navigate through the most challenging time in Gateway’s history.
The details that have recently come to light are deeply disturbing. We continue to pray that God will bring peace, comfort, and healing to everyone who has been affected. We know you are grieving just as we are. We know that so many of you have been impacted and affected. We are here for you, we are praying for you, and we love you.
The Board of Elders has taken a series of steps that we want to update you on.
First, the Board of Elders called a special meeting and accepted the resignation of our senior pastor Robert Morris this past week. Gateway Church is committed to protecting people-first and foremost children and the most vulnerable. Abuse simply cannot be tolerated. We believe that God created every man and woman equally in His image, and that every single person should be treated with respect and honor. God has called us to be known by our love for one another. My father was a deacon & abused my sister & me all our lives. Disgusting. Neither of us told the other until I found out he abused my 9 year old daughter. I broadcast it, we confronted him, & forced him in to treatment. Tore our family apart. I forgave him but relationships ended. I ended up being a nurse & for 28 years helped victims become survivors. It seems like she wasn’t even sure she was abused for a long time. The time in which it took her to process the events, have no impact on his accountability. Just because you rob someone, and they don’t report it, doesn’t mean you didn’t commit a crime. The victim is not responsible for the abuser. The victims actions or lack of action has no bearing on if the event(s) was a crime or not, or if there should be accountability.

What seems to bring contention was that in 2004, she approached him for $50,000. Would you have done this?
I did not. I had to walk through forgiveness for my abusers, not exacting justice. Vengeance belongs to God and God only.

Unless you've been through it yourself, you don't grasp the full power of fear, manipulation, and shame. There are countless examples where victims of sexual abuse have symptoms that linger for decades. 2. She clearly states in this interview that she was already telling people (even starting at 17), but she and the people supporting her found it necessary to cast an ever-widening net because the story kept falling on deaf ears. 3. As she herself describes, telling the story doesn't just affect her; a bombshell revelation like this can disrupt many lives, so that can cause reluctance to talk about it.

What is Interesting here is why she waited so long to bring this out?
This pastor had repented of this sin and inappropriate behavior and has from all Indications been living a clean and converted life bringing the Gospel to the ears and hearts of thousands. Why now?.................
.Well we have no believable answer to that question so let us then consider the words of Jesus. "he who is without sin cast the 1st stone". Did Jesus not forgive and restore Peter after his denial of him? Yes.........Peter repented and Jesus forgave and restored him back into his confidence. Did King David not sin with Bathsheba and murder Uriah? Yes. When confronted with that grave sin did he not repent? Yes.........Psalm 51 is his Psalm of repentance..........did he not remain King? Yes he did...........did he not wish to build a Temple for the Lord.......? Yes. After all that sin he had done God still called him "a man after my own heart". Most of the Psalms were written by this "adulter and murderer", do will still not read those Psalms today? Yes.
What we have here is here is an example of his critics own self righteousness.
God is quick to forgive and restore with repentance from the heart of the transgressor occurs.................man is not. John 2:25 states, He (Jesus) “knew what was in man.” He knew the dark hearts of those professing faith. This is an indication of our Lord's deity, for only the Lord can search the heart and make the right evaluation (Jer. 17:10). As finite creatures, we cannot see into the hearts of others but we are quick to condemn them. Too quick and not remembering that we too shall stand before God and give an account of our life and every careless word spoken or written.

It also didn't happen in the church but at the girl's home and no other person has come forward to say he did the same to them. I learnt as well that she has once brought it forward before in 1987 and the man submitted himself to the authority for discipline so, not exactly sure why it is coming up again but God knows best, maybe he wasn't disciplined then and God wanted him to get the discipline.

@@jenniewebb374let’s get something straight, per the Lord. Robert Morris did not go through a two year step down. He did so for only one month before getting back at it. He kept being warned and given time by the Lord to stand down. God will raise someone up (like He did with Pharaoh) and bring them down.
Further, in Robert’s book “dreams to destiny” he claims it was because of “pride” that he stepped down. On pulpits, throughout the years, he’s claimed “moral failure”.
He wasn’t forthright, and continued lying for 40 years. The saddest part is that there are more than her.
A predator with that kind of depraved appetite, and ability to deceive, doesn’t stop at one.
Yes, there is forgiveness in Christ. But true repentance means telling the truth, and being accountable. Had he truly been brought to sorrow, thus repentance, he would have turned himself in. He certainly wouldn’t have claimed a 12 year old seduced him.
The fact of the matter is, too, is that had this been handled the way it should have been, the name Robert Morris would have never been known. He would have never stepped on another pulpit because he would have been in prison.
Lastly, God truly isn’t mocked, sin will always find you out and be exposed. This exposure is only the beginning. The Lord chose this time for a bigger reason.
By the way (and this is me sharing this part/truth) - the term “Jezebel” is so misunderstood and overly abused. I’m sure Robert did his own “sermon” on it. But one could argue he’s an “Absalom”. I pray he truly humbles himself for his own sake. God is a God of restoration - but He won’t allow His name to be used, nor the blood of Jesus to be trampled on. Hebrews 10:26-31 But most cheap grace being pushed out today overlook truths like that.

I am so sorry and I will. I could have been a victim of a known celebrity but morals and common sense kept me safe. All those people who asked why the woman waited to accuse him - he used the same approach on me but I never took him up on his offers. My late mother and I were going to take him up on an invitation where she would be with me but I learned of a teen he approached in the gift shop of a hotel in Lake Tahoe. The same approach he used on me - 'come be a guest - I will send a car down for you and your mother' .. yet God was protecting us then - we were on airline passes (how I met him when he was a passenger and I had to serve him in 1st class) and could not make any stopovers on our way to Hawaii. I thank God to this day that He knew what I did not and protected me. I also never gave him my telephone number but he got it somehow and kept calling until i told him I needed my own room - he hung up and never called back. That's funny now - ! He would call and invite me to meet him at events - the time I told him I'd need a separate room was when he was at a trade show in Fl. He never called again and I was glad - I was very young and it was flattering that a celebrity would show interest but I knew it was more than him being nice and he also was married.
