  • In this project video, we are making a set of leather saddle bags. This video is a little different from our usual project videos. I am building this project only using the tools from one of our latest videos "Leather Craft Tools Essential for any Craftsman." I did this to show those interested in getting into leather work that you can build a project out of leather without fancy machines and tools. Here is a link to an article on our website that includes that video: dgsaddlery.com...
We do offer a pattern pack for this project that includes the cut patterns as well as a collection of different floral carving patterns. This is a LARGE FORMAT PRINT so if you are in the USA, purchase the PRINTED version. The DIGITAL version you will have to take to a print shop to have them print it out for you. Below are the links to both of those products if you would like to purchase a copy:
    PRINTED VERSION: shop.dgsaddler...
    DIGITAL VERSION: shop.dgsaddler...
Below are some helpful links to other videos we have done:

I’d be a fan of more “no-machine” projects

For what it is worth, I think this video is excellent. I will watch it a couple of times. Amazed at the things I knew and forgot and the things I did not know. Thank you so much. 5 thumbs up! (I like the longer, more in-depth, videos.)

Thanks Don great job as always. Just a point of info, another place to get a granite block is from a funeral mason , they some times have small off cuts of granite from head stones that you can get cheap. I got my first one there for $15 bucks . keep up the good work. Cheers Rod at Round Knife Harness and Saddles, down under in New Zealand.

just a tip when saddle stitching first needle through and hold thread back as don showed push point and most of body of the second needle through stitch hole then pull first needle through a couple more inches if you pierced the thread it will pull the second needle back out of the stitch hole saving you having to take thread off needle.

Awesome video! I have one comment….the strap that the buckle is secured to, when in the saddle and digging in the bags the buckle will fall away making it difficult to reach and rebuckle. Is there a way to secure to the bag?

Maybe I'm not understanding how a saddle bag is supposed to sit on the horse, but that yoke length seems short for each bag laying on the side of a horse? Help would be appreciated, I've had some people interested in saddle bags

Great video. Could you use an oil tan for the gusset?

There's a thread length calculator that you can download that takes in consideration spi, thickness, and length.

Don, I'm just curious about the time difference between building these saddle bags with the tools you used versus the time if you were using all the tools in your shop.

Don, in the video you refer to the hole punches by number. What do the numbers correspond to? My hole punches correspond to millimeters or inches. I enjoyed your video. I always go away with some great information from all your videos. Best regards, Richard

You have new cut benches. Where do you find the polly board top. I was told there is a supplier in San Antonio but I don’t know the name or location. Can you please help. Thanks.

I hand stitch but my arthritis limits me so I use iron or even a drill press that I seldom see on TH-cam I know it’s not traditional but I do what I can

Is there some reason that you don't use the double cap rivets?

    • @brandonzimmermann
      @brandonzimmermann 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Probably has more of the burr type on hand since he works a lot with horse tack. Since you have to clip the post and peen you don’t have to worry so much about thicknesses like you do with a double cap, and are generally used more in an application where strength is needed

      Hermann oak directly.
You can get it from Weaver, Montana leather, buckle guy or Springfield leather. I'd recommend Montana or Weaver.
