Dorothy was my dearest friend. This was one of my favorites. She took me under her wing and always insisted that I sing wherever she was playing. I was honored and loved her so for genrosity and musical genius. I was fortunate to perform with her at 1996 Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl. I have never seen or heard the performance. I know it was aired on NPR but I understand they don't keep the tapes. But I know there is someone with a copy. Now that would be a great christmas gift.

Was it her presumed race that kept her from being more internationally known/accepted or just exposure, in your opinion?

See her today for the first time! Don't think I ever saw a woman performing so powerfully. She easily rocks and rules the entire stage. I'm truly impressed!!

I must thank Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorses for that beautiful "piano blues" movie, otherwise I would have never heard of this Lady.
I have been listening to jazz for about 30 years..how is it possible I have never heard of her? Why has she been neglected the deserving fame and popularity that many undeserving musicians enjoyed?

Because sometimes turned into being an entertainer than a pianist, secondly being a woman. The last point I would make is she did not have a Norman Grantz fighting for her.

She is as speedy, smooth and dynamic as Peterson and as quirky as Monk, meaning the highest musicianship. Moreover, she easily transcends musical genre.

Dorothy Donegan was a monster of a pianist , I was lucky enough to see her twice in the 1990s when she came to Boston.

What a show-woman!! I swear she must have the strength of 10 men in EACH FINGER! Have you ever seen anyone who enjoyed playing the piano more??? (Not including Garner, of course.) But as far as entertaining an audience with piano playing, she has to be the greatest, don't you think?

I inherited one of her albums, "Donnybrook with Donegan," from the collection of my late father. It's still in my library. But there was nothing like her in a live concert. I caught her in New York in the late 1980s/early 1990s as part of the jazz festivals organized by George Wein at Carnegie Hall and was totally blown away. Expected a jazz concert, but was entertained by a show.

You have written my exact thoughts, all the way from the Eastwood film, to your last words. Astonishing talent? Why was I wasting my time in 1979 when I should have been at this concert?! If only I had known. Modern musicians - the pop variety - are sooooooo lame compared to this woman.

Great women performers got pushed aside in favor of male performers. How many black females got mainstream acceptance in her generation? (before 1945). Maybe one or two? Dorothy was a fully classically trained concert pianist who couldn’t get work and said she started doing night club gigs to earn a living and support her child.
