  • How and when did wild wolves turn into domestic pets? Science tells us that humans were behind the domestication of what is now man’s best friend-but the timeline of the transformation has always been mysterious. In this video, Atlantic science writer Ed Yong explains the surprising origin of dogs in light of new research.

    I hate when people use the term "we domesticated wolves to dogs" It is not what's happened. It was co-evolution, no intentional human actions initiated it. (And by a definition of "domestication", dogs and humans domesticated each other as well)

    • @rotodexthepaleontologist2267
      @rotodexthepaleontologist2267 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      rskcdy but it wasn't evolution. 18,000 years is to short a time for any genuine evolutionary changes to happen. It was simply a case of selective breeding. Humans are doing this now. There have been groups of foxes co-domesticated, one group to be friendly and one to remain naturally aggressive. Within 3 generations, the friendly group of foxes was already showing significant changes and acting well, like dogs. It's possible to do this with any animal with a short life span. The only reason animals like elephants haven't been domesticated is due to their extremely long life spans, pregnancy time, and how long it takes for them to become sexually mature. Humans are pretty good at domestication. Our ancestors mastered it.

    • @rskcy
      @rskcy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Evolution is not something that only happens in millions of years, it happens day by day, moment by moment.
      And don't mix the selective breeding, which happened after the domestication.
      The Beljajev experiment corroborates my point as well (and it was more like 8 generations, but thats not the point :) ). It happened intentionally in a very short period of time, with very serious genetical changes, wolves had more time to "become" dogs, non-intentionally, but somehow forced. Grey wolves had two chances to survive with the new competitor, pre-humans: evade them or scavange from their waste. That was the force that accelerated the evolution of dogs. The population of wolves that "choose" to scavage, went closer and closer to human camps, only those could survive, who was neither afraid, nor aggressive towards humans. And humans with these pre-dogs around their camps had some big advantages: if something bad happened in the middle of the night, they woke up faster, because the wolves alerted them (unintentionally, of course, it was not an intentional companionship back then)
      And the two species slowly started to realize that they are better together than alone.
      Only after that breeding became something intentional.
      If you are interested in the topic, I reccomend you Brian Hares works, or to speak for my country Adam Miklosi or Vilmos Csanyi.

      Nicholas Rickhoff they are descendent from a earlier wolf, the wolf was late enough though to be consider a wolf, this wolf separated though into today’s wolfs and dogs, and no it’s not like that, as we split at a certain point when they where not chimps nor humans, it was a different species that split and evolved into two other species.

  • @chefjimmie1
    @chefjimmie1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    That's fine and dandy but this video leaves out the other canines that were undoubtedly the reason for the variety of dogs today. By other canines I mean foxes, jackals, coyotes, dingos, hyenas and other dog-like mammals ALL coming together over thousands of years to bring us the likes of the Great Dane and the Chihuahua. The diversity of dominant and recessive genes in the canine gene pool is extremely large giving rise to thousands of different breeds and that is by DESIGN. The Ultimate Designer made it that way out of LOVE for us (and the dog) to give us such pleasurable and humorous breeds as the pug, Basset hound and the Afghan. And though it's not recorded within the pages of Holy Writ, it may very well have gone something like this: "let us create dogs for the man: friendly, cute, loveable, intelligent companions for mankind that would bridge the gap between the fearful animals and mankind while being loyal to him like no other, bringing him comfort, friendship, love, warmth and gratitude, being thankful to the man, protecting him and following him wherever he goes watching over him as he sleeps caring more for him than for his own safety, drawing near to him and nudging his hand for affection the man and dog will come together in a bond like no other and they will bring each other joy, love, peace, safety and contentment."

Their ability to communicate and understand more would be of immense benefit to both species.. We should consider uplifting them...For that matter, we should be doing these advancements to humans too!

    this video is way off. lets start here. if dogs came from wolves, in which they did, then what was the other animal man used to breed the dog. if you use two wolf species you will always just get a wolf. no matter what breed of wolf you mix with it will always be a wolf. it will never turn into a pug no matter the time length. so they had to have mixed the wolf with another animal. what was it, no one knows? domesticated dogs did not come before crops and live stock seeing how they were domesticated to protect live stock and crops. if you believe we domesticated a wild wolf before we grew plants then you have major problems with facts.

      I think it goes like this. Humans only bred the wolves who were friendly to them and selected certain aspects of wolves they found useful. No being is a 100% replica of their parent, the genes keep mutating. Therefore variations in wolf characteristics such as ears drooping down and all. Selective breeding for generations caused the new "wolves" to be so different from their ancestors that they were named dogs as we know them now.

    All the evidence we need is found at (Genesis 1:24, 25) . . .Then God said: “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds, domestic animals and creeping animals and wild animals of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. 25 And God went on to make the wild animals of the earth according to their kinds and the domestic animals according to their kinds and all the creeping animals of the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. Notice that both the domesticated and the wild animals were created separately.
