  • One's a worthwhile Technics turntable, an SL-BL3 linear tracking turntable with belt drive...the other is a Sony TC-FX211 cassette deck that is a good definition of the phrase "black plastic crap" or "BPC". I got the tape deck to work again and will probably use it in the garage stereo system. The turntable needs a belt and I'm going to get a better cartridge and stylus.

At first I thought somebody removed the Sony's circuit board, until you explained it's all in the front panel! And what a waste of case size, too. My old Panasonic deck is only about half as deep as that, and yet surely has a "real" circuit board inside.

You can't beat the old stuff. Still sounds great, and thanks to line-level standards you can enjoy whatever modern music source you like. I have an old JVC receiver and 20 year old Polk Audio speakers in the bedroom at the moment.

I used to (as a kid) have a huge Sony single CD player that I got from an aunt who was upgrading her gear. Eventually, I opened it up, and the huge case (slim, giant square) was only half-filled with components I was somewhat shocked.

That's a low, especially for a Sony, like nearly everyone else here I too thought the main board had been taken out and someone had just wired the head up to the line in/out connectors. And no auto stop for rewind and fast forward? I've seen walkmans that have had a better auto stop than that.

It knows the size of the record because it has a sensor in front of the cartridge and scans for where the record starts. This is how they also managed to make turntables that can automatically switch to tracks whenever you tell them. The auto speed switch is something I really dont know about but sure does sound interesting.

That deck looks like they just took a cheap walkman and mounted it in a big box with a power supply. Decks like this are what killed the cassette format. But that turntable looks like its a winner. Hope you post again when you get it up and running.

maybe i talked about this in another video, but we had at home REALLY cheap stereo (had 2 cassette decks, a turntable, radio with FM, MW, AM, SW1) and was so cheap that for some reason the two cassette deck had only one motor for moving the tapes. was really shocking. The front panel looked like was made of more individual parts (like the deck and the radio) but was just a piece of plastic. Ultra shitty volume pots too, was like only extremely high or extremely crackling sound. (continue)

i should get one of those cheap tape decks and hide a computer inside. i don't even have to remove the tape mechanism to do it.

@MaurizioM89 (continue) well at least was good for screws, had like 50 3mm screws, we throw it out because the really cheap circuit board just pulverized

I have a sony TC-FX220 from the early 1980's that doesn't have any auto stop whatsoever. It's a real pain... and when I put dolby NR on, I can't hear a difference at all.

Wow I worked on it once before back it the 80s when I was in the NAVY and the customer wanted to know if it was worth 20 bucks to fix it I opened it and showed it to the customer and she picked it up and threw it in the garbage and there it stayed the garbage men picked up the garbage and took it away!

This tape deck looks almost identical to the Sony TC-FX170, except for the cassette door. Everything else, including the boardlessness, seems to be identical. I know the TC-FX170 was Sony's absolute cheapest component-style deck available, retailing at only $83 in around 1993 (when my dad bought it new). I'm sure the TC-FX211 was simply an updated version designed to fulfill the same role.

When ever I see a modern deck with manual push button buttons, I don't even give thought to it. That is a dead give away of a low end cheap cassette deck. The only decks I've picked up with manual push buttons are vintage 70s decks. It will probably wear out your tapes as well as the the tape hubs probably run at one speed and have a friction clutch to slow them down. Fail on Sony's part for making such a piece of junk! I'd turn it in for scrap value. ;-)

When you showed the tape deck, I thought that it had been stripped! Thankfully, I was laying on my bed watching this so I didn't have to pick myself up off the floor. I do have to ask, was that an older Technics by Panasonic receiver sandwiched between the Turntable and tape deck at the beginning of the video?

Oh, I am sure of that. This was very shocking and I have a Sony dual tape deck and now I want to look inside it to make sure it isn't like that. Probably not as it is fairly heavy, but still. That was really odd. No wonder it was at a thrift store. Well it had some nice VU meters that you could salvage from it. The rest of it, well. I guess recycle it or better yet send it to Sony for repair:)

I couldn't believe the inside of the cassette deck. Sony (in my opinion) is one of my favorite companies because I have older products from them that still work today from Sony. But now... eh I bought a Boombox last year (2016) but my dad bought the same thing, and it came broke on arrival.

    I don't buy from Sony anymore !
I have a Sony Bravia, and this thing don't even have a good VGA input ... It takes absolutely nothing ! (except an old ATI Rage 128 and Intel embedded graphics, and I don't know why !)
I also have a Sony LCD screen that I have to open every now and then to repair ...
Instable cell phones ... Crashing every time I need them ...
And so much Sony videogames consoles wared out beyond repair that I can't even count ... I hate that brand ... I hate it SO MUCH !

That is just so sad that Sony being such a good brand name would even put their name on that cassette deck is really something else. Back in the 70's maybe early 80's Sony was one of the top brands, but I have read articles from a lot of people saying they only make crap now, their TV's don't last and they are crap. I wish we could go back to the 80's!!!

  • @Lachlant1984

My God, that Sony tape deck is really shit, really. Why the bloody hell is it in such a large case if there's almost nothing in it, and why doesn't it have full auto stop? Why didn't Sony do what Realistic did and built their cheap tape decks using really small cases? There's a video on TH-cam of someone using a Realistic SCP-32, it doesn't record and it's really cheap, but boy is it in a really small case. That Technics turntable sure must be a really high quality one.
