My mother told me she was in a good will and a young guy came in needing a white shirt for a job interview. He didn't have enough money to buy the shirt but wasn't that much short. They wouldn't lower the shirt even . 45 cents for him. And it was a used shirt and donated! My dad paid for the shirt, but told them he was done with goodwill.

everyone that's going on channels saying, how good of a deal they got at the goodwill stores and then they go and sell them for 3 and 4 times more There messing it up for all the people that really needs the stuff for jobs or just because. They don't have anything nice. Stop showing how much money you're making off of it. But I guess now it's too late. Y'all done mess it up for everyone else. Just.
Because you wanted to go on a channel and make money. Plus make money on your items. There's no good deals anymore because of you all.

If consumers stop shopping there as a collective over a month, itll force them into being reasonable. My sons grandfather was a number 2 or 3 person under the corporation back in early 2000s. He sed he didn't like the projection for the future and that the business itself was slowly losing its connection with the customers, putting him into a moral dilemma. He sed he himself was making a lot of money n wouldn't come close to wat the CEOs were making. He would say how r we making this kind of money off of gifted n donated goods. He took his cut n franchised a subway in runnemede. I thought he was stupid to leave a well paying job, especially after his daughter n i had jus had a child, and moving his 2 brothers, who r retarted and care for themselves into the home. I think they been struggling ever since 08.

I started donating to the Salvation Army instead. They take everyone's donations for their charitable program & sell it all at approximately 429 ARC-affiliated family & thrift stores. The proceeds from those sales fund the ARC rehabilitation program, which is generally provided to participants without charge.
One commenter said yesterday that when she & her 3 children were enduring a hardship including homelessness years ago, she was given vouchers to get 3 outfits & a pair of shoes for each of them to spend at Goodwill. She spent a long time helping each child pick out something that made them feel good, but when she got to the counter the clerk said "none of that is included for vouchers. Only specially marked items are." That story really bothered me & just goes to show what their company's core values consist of.

I could get t-shirts and jeans all day long for .75 cents and $2.50. Now, that t-shirt in same condition sells for $7 and the jeans $12. I see Tees and jeans for far more than that, too.
Now, decades later, Goodwills and other chain thrift stores are pseudo-boutiques judging by the outlandish prices. They've forgotten about the needy people and are pricing for the reseller's market.

I had to start thrifting to pay my bills.
I sold purses. I would bring them home, clean them up. I could buy them at $1.00 and resell them at a good profit. Paid my bills for a while. Till they started selling the good ones for more then I could get reselling them.

We had 7 jids in the family. At some point, my parents ran the numbers and realized they couldn't afford to shop for clothing at stores anymore and went to thrift stores. This was back in the early 1980s. Thrift stores were really places to go when you were in need. Now, it's just overpriced. I donated a lot at Salvation Army, but when I went there lately, I saw the issues with prices. It's now just cheaper to go to Temu. Now, part of why this may be happening is because people use thrift stores for bargain hunting. They aren't in need. They're just trying to find expensive things priced cheaply.

I understand why Goodwill changed their policy about items without price tags. I've seen people who have removed or changed tags and got upset when they couldn't buy the item right then and there. That isn't to say there aren't good bargains to be had without monkeying around with the price tags. As an example, I went to my local Goodwill as the clerk was just putting out a Carnival Glass punchbowl and cups in their special case next to the cash register. Even before she had a chance to complete putting the set on the shelf I told her, 'I'll take it'. There were two antique dealers behind me who were chomping at the bit wanting to buy the set. I took the set to a specialist in Carnival Glass. He said that it was an original, not a reproduction, and was in one of the rarest glass colors, dark purple. He said the set is worth at least $1,000. And what was my outlay? $69.99.

Not the only one with corruption at the top. We should all do our research. In the end? I think it's how much they help your local community.
I've also worked retail. I know how thin the margins are. I also know that just because someone donates something for "free", it doesn't mean that it's free to: sort through, check, clean if possible, throw away what can't be salvaged (that's not free), pay utilities, pay employees...ECT.

A couple years ago my local GW started the "no tag, no sale" policy, but out of the blue they stopped. Since that time, prices have doubled. I get it. Pickers. Free market. No hate, but that's a bigger problem for us poors than missing price tags.

I went to Salvation Army one day and the manager of store came out of his office and told the clerk we have to do 5000.00 in sales today cause that what we did last year on same day. How disgusting.

We started every day at GW going over if we met yesterdays goal and what the current days goal will be for Each dept. Corp usually tacked on some % increase over last years goal. They're true A holes. (Corporate and mgrs).

Salvation Army is the only thrift I will donate to. They do amazing rehab and most of the money they get goes to helping other out.

These stores like Value Village, Goodwill are now for profit stores, not that this is wrong but gone are the days where you could once find awesome deals, sterling silver items, rare books, paintings, guitars etc. The donation centers all have professional pickers that take the good items, price them, and either keep them for auction outside of the store or they way over price them for their special "high end" cases. I no longer go to these stores, though it is rare that I will come away with an overlooked piece of silver (if you're smart and know what to look for), rare books and the odd trinket. I used to find the best guitars in Ohio and Kentucky stores but not anymore.
