- When we were in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada recently, I took some time to check out the local thrift stores. I found some hidden gems at the Goodwill, and was shocked to see Value Village selling used records for $30.

Pick it up. Do I need it. Good will works on the impulse buy rather then the I am going to look for a certain item.
I have never seen records in such organized condition at Goodwill before.
Same for the electronics! I'm pretty sure my local Goodwills just chuck the electronics at the shelves from halfway across the store. 🤣

@@SONIC-BOOM-TV Most Goodwills end up putting anything good especially records on the Goodwill auction site which is basically Ebay . At least in the USA , Goodwill sucks here.
Whipped Cream and Other Earthly Delights is still one of the greatest album covers of all time.

Good will is often called "Charity Shops" in the UK. I prefer Good will to be honest. From the other side of the counter we have a duty to the people whom donate items to raise as much funds for the cause. A recent donation to The British Heart Foundation had a rare Beatles single which sold for £15,000 GBP. A good day for the person who spotted that rare find. On the whole the higher price items usually go for auction so do not clutter up space. I volunteer at at Community Bookstore. So no records, clothes or other assorted stuff. It good to be part of something that gives back to the local community!! So a big thumbs up to all the good will organisations outhere. Without whom a lot of good will would not take place.
Facebook marketplace in Edmonton now has a pair of Uniko speakers with a bit of damage for $800.

$5 for CDs? insane. Nowadays you're lucky to get $1 for a CD
7:48 YIKES! Those prices at that Value Village were totally insane, particularly for records, and the CD prices were all over the place. I haven't visited my local Value Villages in the London and Toronto area for a year or two and I shudder to think what the price structures are now.
They have no clue when it comes to pricing vinyl records reasonably and once they start pushing past a dollar or two for record albums ($24.99 up to $29.99 for a USED DONATED record? Are you kidding me?!!), it's game over and they're just going to be stuck with lots of unsold records and low turnover.
Plus, it's not as if those records are necessarily free of scratches since the guys at the back don't inspect them closely and I have seen Value Village records priced in the $5.99 to $10 range that were scratched to oblivion and were worthless. It's just nuts.
As I saw you walking into the Goodwill, I thought to myself, "I bet he finds Whipped Cream & Other Delights?" I swear to God! 🤣😂
If it's not that, it's a Yanni CD. Never fails. (I bought a bunch of them already 😂)
Ironically, I never see that Album! After everyone says it ubiquitous, I started looking. All I find is big band crap normally

Herb Alpert is a thrift store staple. Just like Wayne Newton, Mantovani, Ferrante and Teicher, Streisand, Manilow etc. I hit thrift stores everyday and damn I get sick of seeing those same titles that just sit there and see no movement. A certain salvation Army I go to, makes it worthwhile though. They have a TON of records, probably 3000 and they constantly get good stuff in. I found Tommy Bolin, B52s CosmicThing,Echo and the Bunnymen, couple Queen,tears for fears, tons of Johnny Cash, even the brand new Adele was 50cents sealed. For every 5 times I go there, I have a good find. Some thrift stores hardly get in records, and I see the same stuff 2 years later. It takes patience, but it's worth it in the long run
@@dawnpatrol700 I'm never that lucky. My best find ever at Goodwill are a few Japanese reissues of Bill Evans for $1. And a bunch of Brazilian albums. That's about it.
Oof, I can relate with your experience at Value Village and your disenchanted tone. I stopped going there years ago, I would go and complain the whole time. It is indeed very expensive and I don't like the fact that they're very ambiguous with the fact that they're a for profit corporation.
Did you know that Savers, in the US, is not a non-profit? Meaning their business model is to ask people give them inventory for free! Its like giving your car to a car dealer for free.

I was lucky at my local Values Village. I found a Pioneer SX-434 for 13$CAN. It works perfectly. I only had to change the lights. A happy man!
The Herb Albert Whipped Cream and other Delights. I have both a clean original and a picture disc of the album. That was with the picture of the lady full of cream. When I was a kid in the late 60's and early 70's, I was taking drum lessons. He had me play to that album.
I know it's religious rock... But you should have grabbed that Daniel Band lp... A great sounding record indeed... And yes... Wish our goodwill had that selection and organization... Nice...
$5.99 is a bit steep for a used blu-ray. Considering Walmart still has a $5 new blu-ray value bin. Also, you can find new sealed blu-ray at Dollar Tree for much less. My local Goodwill here in central Florida rarely has any movies or records in stock. So much so that I’ve just stopped going.
Nice tour Frank agree with comments about taking us out for regular picking! That would be fun! And yes Value Village was not bad at one point terrible now. Even 5-6 years ago you could pick up a gem of an LP on a trip once and a while and prices were great like 2 LPS for $5 at the time (Ottawa)
A friend found an old Dr. Seuss kids' record at Value Village for $19.99. Insane. It's not worth going there at all, unless you work there and get to go through the LPs before they hit the floor.

I own that Yorx cassette deck. When I was in Jr high my dad had picked it up for me for my birthday. I had many fond memories, as I used it for an alarm clock. Through many moves it was misplaced. I found one on ebay months ago for 25 bucks and picked it up. Nostalgia trip enjoyed.

Thanks for showing us around the thrift stores Frank. I agree with you on the CD piles. So many and so hard to read at times. You really need plenty of time to scan through to catch a bargain. Went crate digging myself in Bristol on Saturday - picked up replacement copy of the late 70's punk band "Magazine" - second hand daylight for £5 as y copy had a scratch on it. Took a punt on it as the album cover was absolutely battered, but the record was fine !!

$25.00 for a used record at a thrift store is obscene. I've actually stopped going to Savers (what Value Village is down here) because of the plethora of junky job lots and ridiculous pricing, combined with the fact that they have to collect sales tax since they are a for-profit firm. Cds at my area Goodwill stores are typically $.99 per - even on jewel boxed 2CD sets.
No tax due at our Goodwills.
No doubt those speakers were "White Van Speakers" straight out of central casting. I could smell them down in Phoenix.
I know the Canadian Dollar is not currently as strong as the US Dollar, but $35.00 for those Yorx things is insane. Those same things at one of our Goodwills might got for $5-10 - if it works correctly.

Ur so correct, savers in the USA basically sucks. I have bought electronics from goodwill, sight unseen and no problem! Goodwill is what it is! Goodwill!

Antique co ops are my go to for vinyl.
I have learned that Value Village's selection varies wildly from location to location. The one closest to me (Fredericton), I can count on one hand the number of things I've found there in about ten years.
I find the thrift stores aren't as fun as they used to be. Value Village was ok before they realized people like me were coming in, finding treasure for pennies and then selling them for "bucks" online N stuff. At least I'm assuming that someone have them a "heads up". Sally Anns can still be fun cause they've stayed more or less true to what they set out to do in the first place and that's keeping prices low for a good reason. It's much harder to find something "special" because I think a lot more folks do the samething these days. Hope you and yer troop had a nice vacation. When you said Edmonton...all I thought about was the incredible indoor water slides...sigh. I always thought they were Canada's biggest, but it is Ottawa that holds that crown! (wonder if they are indoor though)

Lol, that is my side business and I love finding the things I sell. VV’s prices now wow! And Salvation Army are now catching up…it’s making it difficult for me, if I find something for $20 then I have to sell for $40 to make it worth my time. What I could find for $5-$10 5-6 years ago now priced for $19-$30 at VV, and it’s crazy because this stuff is donated to them!

Hey Frank! Love your show. I sometimes find the best second hand stereo stuff at thrift stores. I found a Denon AVR 5700 receiver, technics SB-2825 speakers, Denon DP31L turntable, and a JVC sub. I paid less then $20 bucks each. I'm a cheap bastard, but I know a great deal when I see them.😁
Nothing wrong with looking for deals!!! I call it being a fruga-phile rather than an audiophile. You don't have to spend a fortune to get good stuff, if you are patient.

Those days are gone when I walk away from Goodwill with 100 records for 20 and all Beatles and Led Zeppelin Doors
Most of my stereo rig is thrifted. Best piece I came across is my $15US Velodyne spl8bg2 powered subwoofer. My receiver is an Onkyo TX-SR604 for $27 and I have a cheap Sony CD changer for $20. My main speakers are JBL Northridge series E30 studio monitors, which were a birthday present. Most of my interconnects were bought used from a thrift store.
I noticed when flipping through records at Goodwill you passed by a Daniel Band record…that album is a rocker…a hidden gem…not sure of the price but you should check them out!
Seems like how most of my thrifting trips go nowadays. I won't even shop armt Savers anymore. Just too pricey now.
I have more time than money these days though so I can't stop myself from spinning through most thrift stores and almost every garage sale.

I just picked up Peter Gabriel's SO album today. Stoked because I've been looking for awhile fir a decent original copy.

Great video Frank! Interesting to see how your luck was with shopping. Here in Ontario Goodwill went bankrupt(?) ...... I think. Then came back as "Stuff". I usually just find opera, ethnic or obscure records there. Lol. Anyways thanks for taking us along

I saw some CDs that I would buy from Metric, Tegan and Sara, The Flaming Lips, The Ting Tings, The Killers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Diana Krall, and R.E.M.
Never had any luck at Good Will stores to me it is where records and cds go to die. Keep on Spinning.......

Value Village ain't nothing but a joke now. Well, it has been for awhile. I can't believe the prices. They cant ever make up there minds, and I swear their prices are based on rent and employees paychecks. Our local record stores have dropped all their prices to $6 a disc, $10 if it's a double or triple. All media, including 45s & 8 Tracks are the same $2.99 as the records and tapes and cds. I bet that Bowie album was scratched up and autographed by Sid or Nancy. Our goodwills are all over the place as well. $1.29 or 2.29 for cds or tapes. You know how easy it is to switch cases and get the 1.29 deal. I just can't get over the $5 copy of the first Wham album. What next? $7.99 for every Mac Davis album? Because vinyl is hot right now. I love hearing that come from employees there because I like to burst their bubble. Also, this was hilarious. I was in a VV and someone was just scooping up the Supertramp, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, and etc. like I've never seen anyone do before. Not to sound creepy but I followed this person around for the next few minutes. They didn't check 1 record at all. Just paid for them and left. So I hope like hell they got home and found the wrong albums, busted albums. Or just scratched to hell albums. Because that kinda greediness needs to have them brought back to reality. The stores are bad enough. They think they have a stash of rate records behind the glass that are easily $5 records. Meanwhile, there is that one rare a hell jazz album that's worth $200+ just sitting there, for $2.99 on the shelf.
My last good score was the $2 limited edition Panic At The Disco box set that goes for $150-$500 on discogs. I traded it in for $50 cash. But nothing has ever topped my biggest score. I found Alanis Morissettes very first 45 she did when she was 13 for a whole ten cents. Sold it a few days later for $50, back when Jagged Little Pill was a huge thing. Those days are over now, or running out. The thrift stores dont know a damn thing. Because theres how many billions of copies of Thriller for $20-$50 in them now? Yet, well. Let's just say if you find that huge score for cheap. Grab it. And play dumb. Have the heart attack once you get out the door.
I love hitting up the cheaper no name thrift stores. Dont know where they all are, but let's just say on my walks from the Winnipeg airport to downtown, I passed 4 before I even cross the tracks, and 2 are smaller ones. Then there's the 3 off Ellice and theres another one just one more main street north of there. Plus the 2 in the downtown area. What was normally a 2 hour walk, turned into a 4-5 hour adventure.
Best bet is to google them all. And check out those M.C.C. shops. Even if they are religious thrift stores. You just may find a copy of Body Count - Cop Killer on CD for a whole dollar. I've found the CD twice and the tape once for next to nothing.
Or maybe I've just been lucky the past 30 years of thrifting. I usually stockpile a lot of good stuff. And eventually trade em in once it gets out of hand. I wouldn't say I'm a greedy flipper, as I have always taken my stuff into a used record store. So I'm not making a whole lot of money doing this. I'm happy if I double or triple it. Or sometimes I just blow it all in store credit because I saw a stash of classical albums for cheap.
LOL! It's like buying drugs to sell drugs, to get more drugs. Oh what a feeling. What a russssshhhhhhhh.
I found a weird Canadian record collection in the states at my Goodwill. Had to pass. Something in French I almost got, but nah. It was ALSO called Value Village in Oregon. Mine closed.

My whole system(systems actually) are made from thrift store items. Best thing is I can swap things in and out without having to spend thousands or even hundreds. I wouldn't say what I find is hifi, but could say it's on the verge. I will take a day a week and just go around all the thrift stores in the area. More often I come up empty, but every so often there is a glut of riches!
Yeah I've had two awesome technics decks from thrift stores, both for next to nothing. Gave them a service and a new needle and they're awesome.
Same for speakers, if you have the time to google them and inspect them as you are at the store you get a better idea what you're getting.
I love the feeling when you find some good stuff. Makes it all worthwhile.

Nice adventure Frank. I have the same routine as you but it’s harder to find any decent condition vinyl, so I try to find CDs. As for stereo gear, lots of crap on shelves. Glad you mentioned Value Village & Savers. I hit the Savers once/month. CD prices still low enough. Once in a blue moon you find a jewel worth buying.
The thrift trips are mostly frustrating.... but it's the thrill of the hunt. Glad you are funding some decent stuff on occasion, Virgil!
im finding great vinyl and cds at thrifts lately ,i filled one of those wire racks in one week with records i actually love playing last week ...

If we had room in the car among all our suitcases, I would have bought them as well. At the very least, they would make good garage speakers.
That best of Niemen record is probably pretty good. He started as beat pop then went through psychedelic and prog phases. Polish dood.

Over the years, I confess to having picked up both that Chart Action as well as that Herb Alpert and the Tajuana Brass record, but I believe in both cases, it was from one of two places I still frequent where the prices are less than a dollar and if picking up several, can come to 25 cents each. My best score one time was from someone seemed to have dropped off there entire collection and I had just arrived at the right time. I picked up something like 55 records of jazz (in polylined sleeves so someone took care of them) and 70s rock and when I did the math, they came to 20 cents each. While I've had a couple other "good-timing hauls / scores", that one was the best. Like everyone in 2022 points out though, these deals are getting to be few and far between. Thanks for taking us thrifting with you!

Hey Frank’ When did you work at Nait? I took Electronics Engineering Technology there from 79 to 81. I have to agree that Value Village is quite pricey in Edmonton yet in Saskatoon all CD’s and most LP’s are $1.99.
I was at NAIT from 2011 to 2017... I worked in Marketing and Communications doing media relations.
That's cool. I like to go to thrift stores if I have the time when I am out and around. I like looking at the electronics, but everything is usually picked over and I can understand why someone would have donated them, I wouldn't want that stuff either. Sure would love to find all those turntables and console stereos that everyone but me seems to find. Maybe yard and garage sales are the best sources to get the good stuff cheap. You have to get going early enough before the dealers and flippers get there.
I always love to look through records and CD's and would love to find some DVD-A's. If the records and CD's aren't organized, I might momentarily look through them but I will only spend more time if I have the time and/or they are located in an obscure corner where there is a chance they haven't been picked through. I have always had a paction for 45's, but unless they are in original sleeves, I won't waste my time. I love 78's also and am always looking for those R n' R and popular ones from the late-50's.
In all honesty, I need more records and CD's like I need another hole in my head. I already have 1,000's of all types.
A former media relations guy? Me too! Makes sense as you’re a good communicator. I’m internal communications now at a great little corporation. I remember the days of writing and faxing media advisories and press releases!

I hear you about CD spines but I always study each and every one of them til AND go over all of them TWICE before I leave until my eyes are ready to explode. I've found amazing scores doing this, that I otherwise would have missed the first time. The prices at the second spot were ridiculous! 👎

Most records I see at thrift stores are the same ones you will find inside your parents 70s console stereo. I'm surprised that the Paint Your Wagon soundtrack didn't make an appearance in this video.

You can hardly find anything worth buying at a brick and mortar record store anymore, much none the less a "thrift" store where the merch is "smurfed" in the back room... I miss the old ladies that used to run these places that did not give two shits about records.....always a good time and good source back in the day.
Value Village near me started to get silly with LP pricing a few months back but seems to have calmed down a little now, the prices had zero reference to the quality of the record either.
It's crazy... I hope no one is buying the insanely-priced stuff.

No, we don't have those. But I have heard about them elsewhere.
We the vinyl enthusiasts need to buy every awful album that the thrift stores have and recycle or destroy them. I live in Wisconsin (little Canada) and we had many many of the same titles here.

I prefer out local Goodwill, although the typical thrift store records, Englebert Humperdinck, Andy Williams, Christmas etc are always $1, anything you’d actually want the price is $5. This is a recent change as everything used to be $1. The thing is you gotta get there at the right time. I’ve been there when and saw a guy walk out with a huge stack, I went thru and found maybe three. I always wonder what did he find.
It’s funny, when you went into Value Village I thought “That looks just like our Savers”, then you said they are the same. Our local Savers does charge more, I haven’t seen any $30 records though! I don’t get much there just because there is a used a record store down the road where you could get the same records for $3-$5 and usually in better condition. I just feel that if I’m going to pay $5 or more for the record I want to know that it was really looked over beforehand. The used record store guy checks every record himself before pricing.

Somehow I doubt Spotify is hurting because Neil pulled his music from their service. He and Rogan are already incredibly wealthy but the younger up and coming bands will continue to suffer.
Spotify pays artists between $0.003 - $0.005 per stream on average.
