    When we go offshore fishing, we are rigging with a short trace of wire leader about 90% of the time. Using the haywire twist is the best way to rig your wire leaders. By using a short trace of wire we are able to catch wahoo, kingfish and other toothy fish while not giving up the change to catch sailfish, tuna and even marlin. In this episode we show you how easily rig a wire leader using the haywire twist and pre-rigging for your trips.

    Dude, I've been an avid saltwater sportsman since I was a toddler and when I'm not fishing, I'm always learning. Your videos are fantastic. You've got a really good presentation style and also good instincts about what's important to put out there. Find somebody who likes to fish and has great camera and production skills. You're ripe to take it to the next level!

    Exceptional, as always, Capt. Mike. ==> Regarding the live baits and wire leader...Does bridling live bait using a rubber band reduce the bait longevity having to be attached to a wire leader compared to mono or fluorocarbon using a loop knot? I'm guessing "possibly", but considering the sheer number of live baits you tend to have with you, I'll assume you may change baits out a little more often!??
    Another interesting thing mentioned is when you said that you personally DON'T find the wire leader to be a deterrent to having a fish bite your line. But seeing seemingly a million fishing videos and going on charters (currently saving for my own boat), there are so many captains/fishing guides, weekend warriors, etc, that have recommended NOT using a wire leader saying "you're definitely not going to get as many bites." Curious to see if anyone ACTUALLY put that theory to the test, or is it just anecdotal to "one's experience." I looked and I can't find anyone who has actually tested that theory of "Wire Leader vs Mono/Fluorocarbon Leader on Bite Percentage Drifting Live Bait" on TH-cam that I could find! Possibly a future video(s) pitting one against another side by side, Captain?

Just realized by your video using this hand tied haywire twist one doesn't even need crimping tools or sleeves. Im buying a large zeebaas reel probably the 25 or 27 for shark, red fish, snook, tarpon, manitees, dolphin and green sea turtles and maybe a few glass minnows as well. What st croix rod do i need for fishing off the beach? You seem to live on the water 24/7 so ill take your advice. Ive asked other people and they tell me its a personal choice, yes it is but i dont have much 200+ lb. fish experience. I've been fishing my whole life so I can adapt quickly to any rod but what rod do you think would be appropriate for those large fish and reel size?

    How do u rig a wire leader double treple hook side by side

  • @brentbillig5864
    @brentbillig5864 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Capt. If you will reply I would appreciate it. I see your using only one strand of what looks like #9 wire. I surf fish blacktips using this same wire. But all the videos I watched show people twisting up 2 strands into one. Average shark I catch is 5ft. Should I stick to the one wire strand. Or double up ? My wire is always kinking in the surf with the heavy mono. But no breakoffs yet. But has to be changed after every hook up due to sharp bends in the wire near my swivels or hook. My Spinfisher 10500 has 50 lbs of drag. So I use 500yards of 80lb braid on the reel followed by 4ft of 100lb mono shock leader attached by 300 lb swivels at every section. Then 4ft of #9 wire and haywire twisted to 10/0 circle hook. My sinker free slides on the mono leader and has bead stops at both mono ends. I do this for low visability. And the fact that lighter rig cast farther. My rod is 12ft. Is there a better way?

    • @ReelReports
      @ReelReports  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Shark fishing you don't need to be as stealthy so can get away with double strands.

    I understand the speed of having a swivel on the wire when retying offshore but it is a definite target for smaller sharp toothed fish like the hordes of spanish and small kings we have in the Gulf. Fishing a kite, it's not a problem, on a flatline it can be an issue when they attack the swivel. I'm like Matt, I still like the Albright but skip the swivel. It may take an extra minute to tie, but in the long run saves me time with cut offs and frayed line. I love your vids, keep up the good work!

    Great info! Long-winded somewhat unrelated question for you (or anyone): As a gift from my father, I just received a gigantic Penn Spinfisher VI 8500LL and the thing hold an enormous amount of fishing line, most of it will not likely see the light of day once it's put on. For mono, it holds 440yrds of 20# test
    , 300yrds of 30#, and 250yrds of 40#. If I go with Braid, I'll need to mortgage my house to pay to fill it!!
    My wife and I fish almost exclusively from smaller drift boats (10 fishermen or less) out of Boynton/Jupiter 2X a month since we can't afford a boat of our own just yet, and Braid is a No-No for the boats I frequent. My wife bottom-fishes while I usually flatline using a 6' leader of pink Yo-Zuri Fluorocarbon leader w/ 3 J-hooks, typical head boat style. (Oh, yes, I AM trying your short trace-wire July 14-15th to prevent cutoffs!) My father bought us this ginormous Penn Reel since I've been dumped several times on fish we couldn't stop over the last few years from a stationary boat. I've been fishing an older Shimano Baitrunner OC Spinning Reel (BTR8000OC) that works great but holds < 200yrds of 20# mono.
    Any advice on how best to fill this huge Penn Spinfisher 8500LL? Should I just fill it with 20, 25, or 30-pound mono (what brand...ANOTHER dilemma!), put on a top-shot of leader and call it a day, or fill half with a heavier line, maybe go with heavy Braid as a backing? There are so many choices it's difficult to decide what to do. Any advice is good advice.

    • @ReelReports
      @ReelReports  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would purchase a 300 yard spool of 50lb braid and spool the rest with 20lb mono. I have pretty much the same setup on all my spinners.

Isn't the idea of the floro leader making it so fish can't see the line? So... With the wire leader... They definitely see it but you say it doesn't prevent any strikes. In confused man. Does it matter if fish see for line or not? It can't be both ways.... Right??
