Todd Gets Three New Words And Starts Using Them Right Away

- Every year during the fireworks on the 4th of July I give Todd some new words to keep his mind off the noise around us. Todd is terrified of them. This year one of his words was Noise and being able to tell me about it seemed to help him immensely. Todd was much more calm this year over last year's fireworks.
Todd is a 7-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. We aim to let Todd express himself and tell me his wants and needs. Currently, Todd has 53 words on his soundboard. This channel is dedicated to Todd learning to “talk”. They must think we are hard of hearing. I keep trying to show my dog I hear things too.
I taught my cat the phrase "loud noise." I would always say it before grinding coffee beans or dispensing ice cubes. Soon I only had to say it and she would leave the kitchen. When she's relaxing outside I can say "loud noise" to announce that I will mow the lawn. Or I can say "NO loud noise" to announce I'm just taking out the trash or watering the plants, and that she can continue to snooze in the chair. (She knows the word "no" as well, especially said with emphasis.)
She is a former stray and never learned to use buttons (she is scared of them... any noise really, haha). But a lot of language training is possible with cats, even without buttons... even if it's only one-way.

My husband says Vroom Vroom before he brings out the vacuum cleaner and my cat skedaddles to her safe places, under the sofa or the bed. He used to say it before turning on the vacuum cleaner while it was in sight, but moved on to not needing the visuals.
We can also signal her to look out the sliding glass doors to see other cats, wild bunnies and squirrels with a sort of pssst sound.
I do similar things (yes/no/soon + the relevant thing)for my cats, but I haven't warned them about upcoming noise. And they hate the vacuum... I think I'll borrow your idea! 😊
I started something similar with my cats. I don’t have buttons, but I’m trying to say the same short phrases or words before certain activities. Like before I vacuum, I say “Vacuum” 3 times very intentionally. So that if I happen to just be moving the vacuum, they won’t get scared.
A common trait among pets that learn buttons is that they express joy over being able to communicate :o

18 minutes, that’s incredible! Todd’s so smart and eager to learn. It seemed to me he seemed less bothered by the fireworks once he could say “noise” and you could respond “yes, it’s just noise outside”.

I felt the same way too, once he can talk about it it helps a lot. It was the same with me having to leave on business trips. Once he could tell me and we talked about it, it was much easier for him.

I think he stays because he knows if it gets bad he can ask for Floor Time-Cuddles and I will lay on the floor and hold him.

Poor Glamour was moving with a hunched back but she wasn't sitting in the misery bundle of a cat in serious pain (the day before her vet visit). I know it will take time for her medications to help, all of us hope that Todd's request for her back to be happy can be achieved.
Glamour is feeling much better with the meds today and moving easier.

This is my favorite video of Todd so far! He is so eager to learn and so intelligent. He mastered a new word in 18 minutes. Incredible! That was such a good idea to give him a new word to distract him from the fireworks. Thank you for sharing Todd's journey with us.
I started the new words on the 4tth last year and it helped. He does love his board and getting new words, he is a smart sweet kitty
Todd knows love, can feel it and puts his paw on his dads face. Thats some kind of huge love. He's feeling better about the noise and to ignore it like his dad is. He's some kind of wonderkind....super intelligent cat.

While it sounds fun It would not be fair to Todd. These buttons are important to him, and if his meow means something specific he is asking for, I will not understand and be able to give it to him. I will not do anything that may discourage him, I want him to keep telling g me if he hurts or one of his housemates hurt along with his wants and needs.
Having a word for the fireworks experience turned it from anxiety provoking to a happy connection for Todd, such a good idea!

It's amazing how fast he learns and his appetite for new words. I am still stuck on the episode with Glamours back. It is so amazing how he knew not only that Glamour was in pain but which part of her body was affected. And how he knew that dad would help. I was thinking he deserved an award and now he got three new buttons.
He was probably hoping I could help because a while back he told me his head ouch and we went to the vet and found an issue in his mouth which we got fixed. He may remember that
You seem to speak to him always precisely, probably to avoid saying "dumb stuff", aka, unnecessary words, so he can more easily learn and understand. That takes alertness and effort. Good job, Dad! As humans, we tend to just blab and not always say something. (I may be blabbing, but am trying to say something here, lol)
I try to use as much ot the words he know in a way he can understand

I increased the sound tiles in my music room this year and made sound tile covers for the window, me and my Giusepepe Puss spent the evening in there on November 5th which is called Guy Fawkes night in the UK, the attack of the fireworks sound was dissipated and he wasn't scared, in previous years we have travelled out onto the moors in my camper just to get away from it all.
I'm glad he was able to find some relief this year.

I had a vivid dream about you and the kitties last night. 😂🤣 I was in your home visiting, and Todd was friendly, coming up to me for some pets. Glamour was on a box, and I went to her and patted her and she did her famous meow. Paulie was hiding. 😃 You had written a book about Todd and your experiences. It was very good. I was gonna buy a copy till you said it cost $64.00! 🤤 I then woke up, fell back asleep and told you I had a dream about you, in the dream! Very funny. I enjoyed my moment with Todd and Glamour, with Todd standing out the most. 😁😎

Thank you for releasing this preview of the new buttons. I love that he was less anxious. I'm always telling my cat as I find her under the sofa or bed during fireworks or thunder storms that it's all right, everything will be ok, but it seems like she knows about wars and extreme weather, and needs to get under the sturdiest things to take care of herself. I'd love to let her know that sometimes she can breathe easier, it is just noise. Maybe there are buttons on her future.
