nora ribelin Thank you Nora, I did not realize all things she went through when i started on her video. She tried so hard to live a normal life. Notice her home even in California had no gates. As the rest of her neighborhood did. Thanks again, Jerry

Jerry, you did it for me again. I always respected Susan Hayward's acting ability and very much enjoyed her beauty. Going through the comments took quite awhile. Some were interesting, some were not. Parts of this lady's life were tragic, and that is a shame. It was moving to see that she loved and was loved so deeply. I'm glad she had that. Many thanks, Kat

I was a huge fan too. Remember when we were shocked that other countries were using their people as guinea pigs and so relievec that "our government would NEVER do that to us? Hah! We lost some really great actors and actresses because of that and in particular Susan Hayward.

She was a beautiful lady and great actress indeed. I live just 19 miles from her home in Carrollton, Ga. In the 60's I was attending West Georgia College in Carrollton and had to drive right by her house to get to classes. It was a beautiful place.

Susan Hayward was one of the greats of old Hollywood. A true MOVIE STAR and a fine actress. Although she won an Academy Award for "I Want To Live" many felt that she also should have gotten an Oscar for her portrayal of Lillian Roth in "I'll Cry Tomorrow".
It was the story of a stage & screen star who fell into alcoholism and recovered with the help of A.A. Many people were inspired by this film and found recovery in A.A including me.

This was a tribute to Susan that she would have appreciated. I saw her many times in Carrollton, driving her El Camino with her dogs in the back and a scarf tied around her hair, no make-up, with her freckles shining. Carrollton loved her and she was not a movie star, she was one of us. No one ever stopped her for an autograph, we all respected her privacy. When her body came back for burial the local newspaper had a banner headline "Susan comes home" and most of the paper was a tribute to her. She said the happiest time of her life was spent in Carrollton and Carrollton mourned deeply for her. Thank you for the tribute.

Acting ability-without ANY doubt. Stunningly BEAUTIFUL-without question. Her performances stay with you. Most recently, I watched her with Gable in Soldier of Fortune. However some chose to characterize this film, melodrama or whatever, her performance resonates! Also the score is memorable beyond belief by a composer not given due credit-period. Quite the career he had, we need to remember and I thank you sir for this excellent review of her life. We must all remember that every life has high and low points. She had some very remarkable years in Hollywood and privately. Let’s remember those and be grateful for her and ourselves.
Always a skeptic when given any assurance of something that seems questionable.....

Hi Jerry. I've been a classic hollywood fan for quite some years now, and so I was very surprised to find such an informative and wonderful channel as this on youtube. I'm slowly working my way through all your videos and I must say this is far better than anything on TCM. As a Private Detective you uncover photos never seen before, and your down-to-earth manner means we dont have to put up with Scandal and Gossip and can hear stories behind the stories. In the case of this video, I'd never heard about The Conqueror or the seeming curse which went along with it. And frankly I dont expect to see this topic outside of this channel. Most people write off cancer if the people smoked, but smoking does not cause the cancers you talk about in this show. Basically I find it amazing that you are making these shows and we get to see some real investigation, uncovering lots of trivia and emotions not found on TV, and from a fan for fans. I realise you arent getting any younger, and havent posted for a while, but I hope comments like these prove what a star you really are, and I hope you can continue to investigate for us and make these shows. All the best. Dan.

My introduction to Susan Hayward was when a TV channel out of Philadelphia began broadcasting movies at 4:00 PM (charmingly, the theme music was a recording of "The Syncopated Clock" by Leroy Anderson) in advance of the evening news which came on at 6:00 PM in the 1950s. The movie was entitled "With a Song in My Heart" about Jane Froman. The second was "I Want to Live" referencing the life of Barbara Graham who may have been wrongly convicted and executed for murder. Hayward's rendition of the line (when the confessor tell her to hold her breath and then breathe deeply of the gas in order to shorten her sufferings), "How the hell would YOU know?" still resonates with me all these decades later. Others were "The President's Lady" (about Rachel Jackson), "The Snows of Kilimanjaro", and others. My parents took me to see "Demetrius and the Gladiators" in a theater, but I was too young and slept through it, so that movie, too, was seen first on TV.

Fantastic job as always, Jerry (However, I thought the ad running beforehand with Larry Arnn sitting with students from Hillsdale College was intensely fascinating. What a privilege to be able to sit at the same table with the brilliant Dr. Arnn and engage in a rational exchange of perspective.)

I first saw Susan Hayward in the film 'Demetrius and the Gladiators', and thought she was absolutely beautiful, with such lovely red hair. It is such a pity we don't have 'Film Stars' like we used to. They had real talent in those days. The only one I can think of today is Meryl Streep. R.I.P Susan. Hollywood lost one of its finest.

I like the way this tribute pays proper respect to one of the most genuine ladies that Hollywood had the privilege to employ and whose character and performances gained entry into our hearts forever! It is also very important that people of all times know about the radiation poisoning that claimed the lives of so many of these great people whose performances have given so much to each of us! This makes this video more than a tribute. It is a "document " revealing little known truth!

His name I think was Mark Kirsh, or Kirshner. Forgive me, it was years ago..but I recall a documentary somewhere about Susan Hayward and when one of her sons came on the screen, I was amazed - there was indeed, strong similarity in their features. When Mark would be looking after Mrs. Chalkey, she would sometimes remark on it. Mark lived down in (I believe?) Fayetteville, in later years and we have lost touch. But he loved Susan Hayward as I did - and had the pleasure to take care of her during her illness, which he was humbly grateful for...

A good video on Susan, Jerry. I knew her ex husband Jess Barker during the entire 1980's into the '90's. I was the manager of the building that Jess lived in in North Hollywood.

Jerry. In the '80's of course it was many years since Jess's big divorce ordeal with Susan. He was, as I am now, an aging man with many life disappointments he seemed. He was happy when his son, I think only one, came to visit him. He was generally a friendly guy. He did have a big problem at this time with alcohol. There would be weeks and he would not be seen. Then he would appear and be social with his several friends in the building. It was tough seeing him at his worst. At times when I had to go get his rent check. We all cared a lot about him and were glad when he was functioning at his best. It was hard to see the part of him that destroyed himself. He would just be,, disappeared, and missed. It was sad that he was known more for his big court divorce and child custody WITH SUSAN,, than he was remembered for his own acting career.

I always thought she was so beautiful. I read the book I'll cry tomorrow before I saw the movie. And saw the movie I want to live when it came out. I didn't know the story about the red sand causing cancers. I guess the government didn't make it public. Since they died one at a time I never put all of that together. Thank you, Jerry.

Most of these actors were heavy smokers in real life so the radiation hit their weakened immune systems particularly hard. Smoking plus radiation was a deadly combination!
