The EFL trophy in England went from competitive, to being seen as a bit of a joke when they brought in the Prem U-23 teams. Lower league teams are forced to play a certain number of the starting 11 from their previous match because they weren't fielding full sides. Bradford subbed their goalkeeper after three minutes as the assistant manager said 'he had a poor first 45 seconds' to get round the rules!

Unfortunately the competition is pretty much dead in the water reputation wise. it’s a real shame, I have fond memories of the competition as I’m sure many people do. It seems it’s just become a way to justify large teams who have a huge reserve players and scoop up anybody who has potential just to stop other clubs from having them.

@@jamm6431 Agreed, it's a real shame. I remember watching Blackpool lift the then LDV Vans trophy at the Millennium Stadium when I was 10. Got to see them lift a trophy that teams at that level wanted to win, now even the final won't get many attendees.

I hope the rumours that were going around about scraping the national league and making league 2 into a north and south division and relegation feeding into the vanarama north and south division comes to fruition and with the extra teams in the football league they have the common sense to reorganise the EFL trophy and make it a respectable competition once again rather than a day out with the kids for prem and championship clubs.

In Portugal some B teams play in the 2nd division, a very competitive league. I think that's why Portugal is developing more youngsters with better qualitiy. It's a good example of how B teams can be really good in the game.

Extra reasons to keep around a reserve level player: Home grown in nation/club if it is a talented youngster you bought. Two smaller ones: More control over their development , better coaching staff and facilities then where loan them too (less likely if B team). Note on having them in main team and available for reserves, this cuts down their training by one day as they are then playing for the reserves and it puts more pressure on your coaches lowering general coaching quality (depending on amount of coaches you have). So that is not a full positive. Also important to note irrespective of B team or reserves is that player's don't develop from playing time before the age of 18 so if you have good coaching and facilities might not want to loan them out.

  • @arsvi123
    @arsvi123 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

One thing that's also worth mentioning is Homegrown players, you shouldn't loan a player out if you want them to be an HGC (if you only want them to be an HGN you can loan them out to any club in the same country as you), players dont count as being in your team during a loan spell, while they do if they're playing for your B/U21 team.

Better allowed them on the 3th level , but lvl 3 lvl 9 were endend in october due to covid just like last season. So they as only of the youngsters in Belgium can play offical games.

I never paid much attention to reserve teams in the past, until my current save in Peru. The rules in this league are absolutely bonkers, and one of them is that your senior team gets extra points in the table at the end of the season if your reserve team finishes top-2 in the reserves competition. Two extra points for 1st place, and one extra point for 2nd place. Considering that I'm even on points right now with one of my rivals half way through the season, this particular league makes it worth it to keep the reserves team in good shape.

I have a couple uses for my B team.
    1. To get the final couple years in for my youth players to get them home grown to the club before I loan them out.
    2. To store my players for loan (either youth I'm hoping grow or players I couldn't sell and have settled for loaning out to get them off my wages).
    3. To store players I either intend to sell or am in the process of selling especially to unsettle ones who think they should be in the first team.
It's generally a graveyard and a mess, the coaches and amount I check in on those players is minimal. But it's a good place to drop all players you're unsure about in to, if I want to know where to trim the team I can just put them all in one place and clear through it. So when you look at your youth team and first team you get a clear look of how those two sides really are.

I usually make the U23 as strong as League 2 or even 1 in course of like 3 or 4 seasons i guess .. first of all i can afford it .. second and the most important one .. the HGC .. i have to be ready for the inevitable .. so i do loan out players that i'm not quite sure will make it .. and sometimes the 5 star potentials as well cause it's better for their development or they're pushing for one .. but i try to keep the good ones and make them HGC .. and of course i play them here and there in Cup games and occasionally in PL

Because, yeah right now there's basically no reason to have them in the game at all other than to keep people from retiring too early. Players need to gain more from getting that match experience. Even a little boost would make them valuable enough to fill out a roster.

You should ALWAYS loan a player out if: 1. He's already 18 years old (Then, playing becomes much more important for development than training); 2. The club that wants to bring him on loan plays at a better league than the one your reserve team is in (Quality of matches player is in also greatly influences development); 3. The club will actually field him very regularly (They should go as Star Player status or close to ensure he gets as much playing time as possible).

For me there is a bug in FM19 and FM20 where you cannot get rid of B-teams or U23 teams. I had this happen in 2 different leagues so i think it's a general bug. If you take full control, then every year at the start of the season the game asks if you want to register for the U23 or B-team competition. Even if you remove all players and staff and answer NO on the question, the game will create a full calender of fixtures where you don't have players for anymore, tiring out and injuring all your youth players over time. It sucks bad...

Players in reserve teams do usually accumulate appearances and match sharpness even when those reserves play in a league that doesn't exist in the game. Reserve teams can make a good dumping ground for trialists and for under-22 players you weren't sure about but decided to sign for one year with an automatic extension option in case they turned out to thrive upon playing in big matches (or in case talented first-team players got poached or injured and you need to reinforce your first-team squad). Keeping down the size of the first-team squad means a lighter load on the coaching staff (helpful if you aren't allowed to sign many staff). Also, if first-team players throw a tantrum because you aren't playing them enough or they sulk and stop performing because you stymied their holy career development by rejecting a £6.75k offer from a slightly higher-reputation club at 11:30pm on transfer deadline day, dumping them in the reserves will stop their unhappiness from contributing to the overall happiness level of the first-team squad, and will prevent the idiotic board from leveraging squad unhappiness or lack of player support as a point of criticism against you.

you don't always need custom database to promote your B team to playable league, if your B team play in league below playable league ex. Tercera division in Spain, Regionalliga in Germany, they can be promoted without custom db, you need just a bit of luck (or S&L in specific day)
I play as Deportivo la Coruna, my B team is the strongest in La Liga 2 (and probably) stronger than few La Liga teams, they constantly produce players that break into first team, so B teams can be great if you use them well and if they play in normal (not reserve) league

Just started a save with FC Bayern II down in the 3rd German league, and won the league with the youngsters - you have 15-16 b team players and lots of u18 players (very talented). Funny save, B teams are fun to manage because you cannot buy, you have what you have. I developed them a lot in a year, at the end of the season Cuisance, Arp & Batista Meier went straight to the first team 🤙

Not sure entirely if it is still a feature in the game as it wasn't entirely a real thing. But I found out by LLM in FM19, that when you are a club who doesn't have an U23/U19/U18 etc manager, you have the option through staff responsibilities to be manager of the U** group. Obviously the problem with this is you aren't solely manager of the U** team but the whole club, whilst filling in as there is a vacancy. This means you would have double the workload. (I assume by setting all first team duties to assistant you could technically solely focus on U** team and let the assistant become the actual manager - problem being if the assistant performs badly, you would get sacked; maybe it would be doable with in-game editor and choosing to be unsackable and then doing all of the above, what would be good is you could also manage transfers in of young players and leave DOF to do first team)

    • @joewood791
      @joewood791 4 ปีที่แล้ว

This applies to Club A analogy used. And would mean you could manage reserve/U** with more control of what you could do than being an actual B team Barca B/Bayern II for example

Hi Zealand, something which I wanted to get your opinion on is a realisation that I recently had whereby I think most fm players are not playing as the game intended, including myself. But I’d like to know your thoughts.
The idea is that when players are sorted into ‘squads’ (first team, reserves, U19, etc), these squads actually represent training squads rather than match day squads. I think most people will move young prospects into the reserve or youth teams as they’re not expected to get game time in the current season
However, Klopp has recently been protesting the fact that his youth prospects don’t receive league winners medals despite them training with the first team for the entire season, which got me thinking about my fm saves.
What backs this up is the fact that you can make players available for youth team matches but you can’t make players available for youth team training. That is unless you have a confrontation with a player and tell him that he is ‘training with the kids’ for the foreseeable future and the game automatically moves them into the youth squad.
Since the inclusion of mentoring groups rather than individual tutoring, I have wondered how best to mentor those youth prospects when they’re in a different squad than my best mentors (usually first teamers). But now it seems so simple if the ‘squads’ are designed for training.
After having this realisation I was stunned that I have been perceiving the game I’ve been playing for 15 years completely incorrectly, and I was wondering about your thoughts on the matter. It seems as though most youtubers I come across play as I did (by only having match day players in the first team squad) so I’m unsure whether A) it’s correct, and B) whether it’s news at all. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Currently doing an Athletic Club save and their B team has been a fantastic resource.
First season I overspent to get the B team promoted and now they're up near the top of the Spanish equivalent of the championship. I've constantly got my youngsters on the edge of the first team playing in the 2nd tier regularly with odd first team games thrown in. The increase in development is fantastic but it's also been great for a couple of my younger strikers when they go on goal droughts. Allows them to get goals and switch back into the first team when the other strikers start misfiring.

I don’t believe that’s true because the registration rules are pretty strict in the Spanish league for second teams.
You would have to have all the players registered before the season to allow them to play in your B team, so just sending them down wouldn’t work.
I’m also not sure that you can register someone for both your B team and A team because when I tried they got excluded from my B team squad and weren’t allowed to play.

Is there any firm information about what the results of 'shouting' during matches actually is?

I'm playing with Athletic Bilbao. I am in 11. season and my B team is in second league and C team in third league and they are amazing and lot better then 99% loans. In first season my B team was in 4. league and C team in invisible league but at end of first season they both promoted. Guess i was lucky that C team promoted to real league so fast so i can actually make use of it.
B and C team use main team's coaches and state of the art training facilities and play in relative high reputation leagues(specially spanish second league) and i took control of their training schedules and individual training and i can tell you that young players develop amazingly there. LOT LOT better then on loans to random clubs, only better(maybe) is loan them to first teams in first league but i didnt notice any major diffrence of few times i did it. Second league combined with state of the art training facilities and 4,5 and 5 stars coaches are good enough for 17,18, 19 year olds.
On the other hand U19 team dont use main team coaches(only goalkeeping and fitness coaches) so i hired lot best possible u19 coaches for them. Basically my U19 team are all exclusively 15, 16 year old, C is 17, 18 and B teams are 18, 19, 20 years old and in each is one 26, 27 year old "veteran" for mentoring only. Both my teams, B and C won their leagues multiple times but cant promote anymore since cant be in same league.

I've learnt to only sign the best youth players and to do it as early as possible on a long a contract as possible. That way you take a bit of a hit for those years but save money in the long run by the time they need a new contract they'll be home grown and you can loan them out for a year or two of experience and other clubs can cover the new contract wages. I usually pay a little more to get them to agree to longer contracts or ones with "optional" extensions. The hardest part is not just signing every decent looking wonderkid I've had clubs with near 150 players which is a nightmare to juggle.
