You did a wonderful job on this one. I didn't know a lot about Miss Nell except for she could sing, she was from Birmingham (HOMETOWN GIRL!!!) and was on one of my favorite shows from my childhood "Gimme A Break". I remember when I was younger, at some point my mom and I saw Nell Carter on TV, and my mom went, "She from Birmin'ham!" I also knew that she had a child as a teenager and the baby was the product of rape. Being from Birmingham myself, she always gave me hope that I could make it too, somehow. This was a great one. I hate that she went through so much throughout her life, but seemed to have found happiness before she passed on.

I recently started watching reruns of “Give me a break”and I noticed how towards the beginning of the second season, they kept referring to Nell as a housekeeper, she was never a housekeeper! Nell’s character was introduced as a friend of the family and the mother of the 3 girls was dying. The mother asked Nell to give up her career to raise her three daughters after she was to pass away. She was asked to be a fill in mother not a housekeeper.

      Housekeeping doesn't always mean "maid"...
It is literally the keeping of the house with maintenance & upkeep.
It's on the level of how "mistress" got confused with the woman in an affair when it actually means " Woman of the home"...the counterpart of Mister

One of the things that has always stuck with me from Give Me A Break was a conversation between Joey Lawrence and Nell Carter as their characters of course. Little Joey is at Nell's house and sees a black Jesus, and says "I thought he was white." Her response was "the white folks thinks he's white, black folks thinks he's black and to Kermit thinks he's green." I think that one little comment has helped me start to see things differently and try to look at different perspectives.

These mothers back in the day were the worse. They swept these rapes and sexual assaults under the rug to protect these Black men, but in the meantime killed their daughters' spirits. My mother did that to my oldest sister. My sister was pregnant at 13 by my mother's boyfriend. She wanted to beat the baby out of my sister. I was little. but I remember that. In my twenties I asked my mother about that. She denied it. I was about 5 years old, but I remembered that shit. My sister's spirit was destroyed. She was worse than Nell Carter on heroin. Go watch the movie Down in the Delta with Alfre Woodard and Loretta Divine. It tells it all.

I just watched that episode and it's what caused me to come here and watch this!
Miss Nell was truly a gem and she was massively talented. Nell was the same age as my parents, back in the day. My parents did some live theater acting and knew Miss Nell back in the '70s. My mom said that Nell was incredibly nice in person. I guess she bought me a pretty pink and purple dress when I was a baby. (I wish my parents would've kept it.) Nell was also a confidant to my mom and a couple other ladies.
Sadly, I never got to meet Nell. (Technically I did meet her but I was just a baby and obviously don't remember it.) My parents would try to make plans to meet up with her but something would always come up.
On a side note, my dad and I met Sherman Hemsley in 1987. My dad was in St. Louis on a business seminar and as it was over the Summer & I was out of school, he let me go with him. We had a late lunch at the hotel's restaurant. As soon as we were seated I immediately knew who it was. (I was an enormous The Jeffersons and Amen fan.) My dad told me to calm down and leave Mr. Hemsley alone. He said that he was probably trying to relax and have a nice meal in private and didn't want some teenager pestering him.
(I've actually met several celebs over the years and that's a big rule my parents had....you don't bother them if they are with their family or if they're trying to have a meal.)
Anyway, I was trying my best not to stare at Mr. Hemsley but he did catch me a couple times. He was incredibly nice about it. He invited us to join him at his table. (The place was completely dead and we were the only ones there.) We ended up eating with him and talked for a while. My dad took a couple pictures of me with Mr. Hemsley and I got his autograph. He even paid for our meals. My dad kept arguing with him over it but Mr. Hemsley insisted. He said it was a nice treat for him. I'll never forget how he kinda seemed sad. I don't know if he was going through something personal or what but there was just a sadness about him. 🤷🏻‍♀️😔

One thing not mentioned was what a stunning, unconventional beauty Nell could be. I grew up as an '80s kid and recall that especially in the latter seasons of the show in those gorgeous, designer dresses and just-right hair and makeup, thinking that Nell Carter was one of the most beautiful ladies on TV, right along with Janet DuBois. This was pre-Cosby Show era, which kicked open the door for other more conventionally beautiful African-American lead actresses like Phylicia Rashad. I'm also surprised that Ashley didn't address the controversy in the Black community about African-American women still playing house maids during this relatively contemporary era. It was definitely a conversation in my family. However, Nell Carter's comedic acting and singing talents were so immense, the controversy never stopped us from enjoying her show. And it was definitely HER show. Nell's character really was the lady of the house, rather than simply the housekeeper. And if I remember correctly, her character had enrolled in college with plans to run her own business before the shows run was over.

I worked in the theater circuit in 1978. Ain't Misbehaving was a huge hit. The only gossip I heard about Nell Carter was a false trifling about her featured in a production of Let My People Come, a musical with nudity in it. Then, in the late '90s, I attended a Pride event held by the NYPD where Nell Carter was guest speaker. She gave a heart-felt speech including the words: "You know what? I'm proud of you!" I say that to say, out of all the scandalous gossip about Ms. Carter in the video, never was there a word mentioned about her to my hearing in the gay community. Not a word. Other famous people were notorious for being difficult divas and pricks in the theater. But not Nell Carter, who was usually mentioned for being Black and Jewish. Now I understand why she was much revered. Thanks for the reveal, Ashley. 😘

Nell had such a fast paced yet tragic life she I feel just wanted a loving family and a family that was hers it’s sad that her mother wasn’t that supportive of her after Sexual assault and pregnancy I think this event and like so many other people who have went through similar experiences had a very traumatizing affect and made her spiral out of control and become very promiscuous and awakening Sexual appetite but her story kind of reminds me of Tammi Terrell with SA too this can have a lasting effect on A persons life

Yes it can and does but God can and does heal, deliver and restore, but the survivor must turn to Him but many actually carry an anger and hate for God because it happened and a powerful God did not prevent it is the thinking. Also having to forgive the abuser is crazy thinking. Yet "1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before the age of 18. That's alot of children in the US alone.

Wow!!! Thank you Ashley 😊 She was one of my favorite actresses. As a young black girl growing up I loved loved to watch Gimme a break. Everthing about her told or showed me as a little black girl you can grow up and still make mountains move. No matter the color of your skin or size. 💖💗💓💞💕
