I was 7 years old when Natalie was dating my cousin. She was still a student at UMASS. She and my cousin bad no where to sleep, so my mom said they could sleep outside in our covered tent. Now that I know she wanted to work with children, that makes a lot of sense why I was drawn to her. I sat on her lap and she hugged me and spoke on my level. She even let me play in her hair. I didn't know who she was, she was just so nice to a little 7 year old.

And I bet you that was another reason why her mother didnt like her. All that talent and her fathers looks and name was just to much for Maria. All that unresolved pain that Natalie carried around almost her whole life. That had to be hard for her. Also Natalie Cole has died, her ex husband has died and so has her only child. Sad life that could have been so much better. Same for Whitney Huston. Boy those mothers sure can mess up their daughter's lives.

#SaySoSquad! Whew Maria was a real piece of work! I always knew Natalie's relationship with her mother was never good but I had no idea the length of strain that their relationship had. I remember watching her biopic Livin' for Love: The Natalie Cole Story and she did the narration for the movie, she talked about how her mother didn't let her see her father when he was dying. It's really sick that she hated the fact that Natalie was so close to Nat, looked like him, and everything. I believe the part about Maria being a colorist. Natalie talked about how much Maria favored Cookie over her because she was lighter than Natalie. I knew about Maria being Nat's mistress when he was married to his first wife and then he turned around and was cheating on her with Eartha Kitt and several other women. He even left Maria at one point and was living with his mistress Gunilla Hutton. He only went back Maria because he was dying. I think that's why she didn't let Natalie see her father before he died. Natalie adored her father, I feel like if she would have gotten a chance to have closure with her father before he passed she would have never spiraled so badly. Maria was also the reason why Cookie's first daughter was put up for adoption. She put that baby up for adoption against Cookie's wishes because she didn't want Nat's reputation ruined because his daughter had a baby out of wedlock. Thankfully Cookie was able to reunite with her daughter before she passed away. Maria was grimey as hell. Natalie deserved a lot better. Maria treated all their children like dogs.

@@tyiingram9878 I understand how you feel, however, don't let it hold you back in life. If there is something you want to do, DO IT. If you want to get a degree, DO IT. If you want to advance in your career, DO IT. If you want to own/sell property, DO IT. Don't allow a bad childhood/marriage, etc. define you and don't become a victim, ALWAYS look at yourself as a survivor. I don't know what you had to deal with, because each case is different. REMEMBER THIS: People see things they don't like in themselves or become envious of who you are, so they do or say things to tear you down. It is important to know who you are, the good and bad so you can realize when people are projecting their own insecurities on you. It takes time and it is a difficult journey, but forge ahead. I had an extended family, which saved my life and made me see my own self worth.

Thank you for your gifted storytelling, Ashley! I loved Natalie Cole for her music, and I think she was a gifted actress as well. I liked her in "Lilly in Winter." She left us way too soon, but I am glad she got to achieve tremendous success. She was an incredibly beautiful woman, and I'm so sorry her mother could never see that. My mother is light-complected and my father was dark-skinned, and my mother loves everyone of us--we all came out dark--and doesn't treat us separately. I am going to start watching more of your videos Ashley!

I took my mom and husband to see Natalie before she died, and her performance was amazing she looked so healthy and gorgeous. She was to do the concert like a few months before but she stated that she was sick the concert was 1 of the best ones I've been to. RIP Ms. Natalie Cole

In those times those boujoi light skinned people were terrible just horrible. And for a time in the 90's it just about went away but now a lot of us don't even date our own kind. A lot of brothas are saying they want an exotic chick. Not me though. I love my sistas

I loved her music and I loved her dad...I thought I was the only 13 year old in 1973 who begged their mother for a Nat King Cole greatest hit Double LP for Christmas along with my Jackson Five LPs as well..I was a music nerd. But I rushed out in 1975 to get Natalies first LP...years later when my first daughter was born in 1991 I got inseparable I sang all those songs to by baby girl as lullaby’s..I’m actually tearing up as I’m posting this😢 🤦🏽‍♀️every time I play that cd the memories of my first daughter then my second born in 1996 come flooding back. My heart broke for her reading and hearing about her rocky relationship with her mom her drug abuse...oh maybe you had so much to chat about or maybe you forgot..Natalie penned her autobiography “Angel of my Shoulder” in the 90s and also did a made for TV movie where she played herself based oh her book. It was pretty good.
Thank you for all of your research and great content! I bet you were a GREAT story teller when your kids were little. Be blessed!!❤️❤️

Natalie Cole was not of this world even everything she had endured with drug abuse domestic abuse and illness she always looked so ethereal and beautiful she was a living angel I am glad she was in peace with herself before she passed away
It shows how ignorant people are and never dealt with organ failure my brother passed away from it and was very small when he passed away dialysis is no joke

My brother had kidney failure and went through years of dialysis. It breaks your body down! He was a muscular, fit, healthy looking athlete and before he passed at a young age you wouldn't believe how fragile and thin he looked. It's devastating. Adding to what you're saying, if she was courageous enough to report her diagnosis of Hep C and folks knew it was through substance abuse, why would she not share this bogus AIDS diagnosis? Her body was failing her from the life she had lived and that's heartbreaking.

Also, Natalie Cole's Mother had an Aunt (Charlotte Hawkins Brown) that started the first black boarding school in the US down in North Carolina. The school operated for many decades through I think 1970. Many elite black children attended this school. The campus is now a museum and can be toured. The school's name was Palmer Memorial Institute. When you tour this campus, you can almost imagine what it must have been like, huge buildings with Corinthian columns! President Franklin Roosevelt's wife also was an acquaintance of Natalie's relative and visited this school.
