    Great video. Brings back lots of memories from my trips across the country. Got the worst food poisoning of my life from that truck stop in Iowa.
    I had almost the same truck years ago and averaged 16mpg on a trip from Northern California to Oklahoma. Main difference was mine was a 87 so factory fuel injection. It also had pretty high gears with 3.08’s.

  • @shadetreejoe3986
    @shadetreejoe3986 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Just a few things...First, the engine will lean out at lower elevation, and get richer at higher elevation, not the other way around. The air is more dense at lower elevations. Second, your short is part of the brake/turn signal harness, probably around the trailer lights. You've got a turn indicator holding solid green on your dashboard while driving at night. It should not be lit up, so look there for your blown fuse issue. Third, you will probably not see much better than 10 mpg until you do something about gearing. The truck doesn't have overdrive and was built when the speed limit was still 55 mph. The axles are probably close to 4.10 ratio, so the engine hums pretty good at highway speeds. I went through this driving cross-country in my 1978 W200 Power Wagon in the 1980s. A five speed swap may be in order.
    Loved the video and seeing Big Green Eh? driving cross country. Keep up the good work.

      In another episode I think they mentioned that the truck had 3.73 gears and about a 35 inch tire. The tachometer was showing just under 2000 rpm at 45, but with those numbers it's actually probably going closer to 55. That's probably part of the motivation for swapping in the crate motor, because the truck is a little under-geared for that tire size.
      It depends on what the use of the truck is. If it spends a lot of time in city driving, they'd probably see better mileage by re-gearing to a 4.10; because the engine wouldn't have to work as hard. Adding an overdrive to the current setup means that the OD wouldn't be usable except at higher speeds.

    Wow that is very loud, even for a square body. When you change your speaker....do some other things as well. Get some sound deadener off of amazon, and line the whole floor and all the inside of the doors with it. Also get under the body and spray up under the fenders with some black, spray can sound deadener that also acts as rust preventative. Use alot of coats where the tire noise mostly comes through in the wells. Then spray interior floor on top of your layed down deadener with alot of coats and put the carpet back on top. Then I'd try and decide if I wanted to use more sound deadener layers and carpet the ceiling or if I wanted to just keep as is and simply tape everything off and just spray the black can deadener all over the inside metal ceiling. I did that in my old square body and the sound difference was incredible, AND importantly it looked clean and factory. These are what I used and it was way more material than needed. I do this for every car I own basically, and it's less than $100 and makes a huge difference.

    In 2013 I bought a 2002 GMC Sonoma and drove it everyday for 10 years. I kept extra bulbs and oil in the cab because sometimes the oil level would drop suddenly. One day the oil pressure dropped and when I checked the oil level the dipstick was dry. I used the oil I had and then drove to a hardware store and added another 3 liters. In February 2023 I found a 2016 GMC Canyon at a good price and in great condition for sale in Ontario. I left Edmonton, Alberta on Wednesday at 10:30 pm and arrived at the Seaway GM dealership in Cornwall, Ontario on Saturday at 7:30 am. I slept in the truck and took 2 flats of energy drinks and 12 bags of beef Jerry with me so I wouldn't have to stop for food. After filling out some paperwork I transferred my stuff from my old 2002 Sonoma to my new 2016 Canyon. I left Ontario on Saturday afternoon for the 3,500 Kilometer drive home. I got back to Edmonton on Monday at 7:30 pm exhausted but I had to fuel up and drive through the touchless car wash before going home to shower, eat, then finally stretch out in my bed and sleep. It cost me about an extra 100 bucks in fuel for the 4.3L V6 Sonoma compared to the 4 cylinder Canyon but I would prefer a 4.3L in the Canyon.

    • @SSMJ
      @SSMJ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With some carbureted vehicles it's better to just shove more fuel at problem. Basically you gain more power back in return for it burning uncleanly and losing MPGs. It's all a choice though

    • @Captndarty
      @Captndarty 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Seth Johnson more fuel with less air doesn’t sound like a clean or powerful burn to me. Maybe they just said it backwards.

    • @SSMJ
      @SSMJ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Captndarty That's the point, it's not a clean burn, but it gets you some power back, and that can matter if you run it up at in the mountains a lot.
      The based on what they said later in the video, I'm going to take a solid guess and assume that they switched around what Rich means and they were talking about how much air was going instead of how much gas.
