- With England's opening game of Euro 2024 fast approaching, it's been rumoured that Trent Alexander-Arnold will start in midfield for England. In a move which even Jurgen Klopp was reluctant to do - could Gareth Southgate have found the way to unlock his sides attacking potential?

The answer of course is to find a surgeon who can swap Trent Alexander Arnold 's feet over so he can play LB. Then England will be unstoppable.
Germans do have a liking for experimentation on humans in the past 100 years...
Or play TAA as an inverted right wing-back and shift Walker over to the left as a inverted full back. Drop Trippier, play Foden as a free 8 alongside Bellingham and put Gordon or Eze wide left to keep the width.
So instead of a defensive liability at RB we'd have a defensive liability at LB.
Klopp did play TAA in mode field a few times. Yes he was listed as the right back, but he moved into midfield more often than not and Liverpool moved to three at the back in game.
A few times? More like all the time in the last few years. It was fundamental to the system. But he often drew criticism by casuals for getting caught out at RB when his starting position was normally in the half space with the six. Extremely difficult position to play. Would have been nice to see him sit in midfield without having to cover RB also, but klopp wanted him in the hybrid role. He’s a much better player than what he gets credited for. Could be Englands most important addition in this tournament if he links up with the great attacking choices we have. Time will tell
He's been playing in an inverted role since the 2-2 draw against arsenal in the 22/23 szn. And hes played quite a number of minutes as a 6 this season (without inverting from rb), notably in the last 15 mins against arsenal in the fa cup when bradley came on. In possession he's often in the 6 between our 2 cbs. Only out of possesion when we're in our defensive shape is trent playing at rb
@@mura6093 Yup. If Bradley had been available for the league game at the Emirates, we'd have won the League and Trent would have been one of the first on the team sheet. His defensive abilities include reading the counter press better than anyone else in the team and being in the right place in and around the area when the shot of cross comes in. He has blocked more on target shots than any other defender in this squad. Unbelievable that Mainoo with no tournament experience, is being considered for the same position ahead of him. Or even travelled.
However. He should play RB ahead of Walker, with Gallagher next to Rice in a double pivot.
How is Trent “not experienced in torment football” he’s won the champions league, been in 3 champions league finals and gone deep in domestic cups numerous times… he’s one of the most experienced English players in the squad right now
He means international tournament experience mate.
Same thing, a tournaments a tournament. Doesn’t matter if it’s international or not. On top of that England have been disappointing in international tournaments so I would say all of these players have very little international tournament experience
@@trikz5934 it's not the same thing at all though. Think about it. But I agree that we're low on experience. And when low on experience, we shouldn't take risks like Trent in midfield.
How many minutes of tournament football does he have as a defensive central midfielder?
The only upside of playing TTA in the Serbia match is that we have time to recover from his inevitable mistakes. We have a plethora of attacking talent, all better than TTA and our weaknesses are in defense an area that TTA is a liability.
Of course the city fan comes in and starts twerking for Kyle Walker lmao
calls trent world class then says he shouldnt play loool
city's who?
😂😂
Kyle walker can keep the RB position. Trent plays in midfield with jude and rice. They handle the dm and box to box stuff whle trent focuses solely on attacking
@@arunodayray1932
With how Trent passes the ball, it’s going to look like those 3 lads will run the midfield nicely
Foden doesn't have the physicality of that 10 role or the intelligence for it. He needs to play in the pockets (left/right attacking midfielder). We saw this against Iceland when we witnessed probably the worst individual performance by an English player under Southgate.
Performances wise last season, mad disrespectful towards Bellingham even having Foden in the same convo. Bellingham was consistent from August - May. He had to deal with multiple issues like a dislocated shoulder and a sprained ankle throughout the season and terrible officiating. In 27 starts he scored 19 goals and 7 assists from midfield, first half of the season was 16 in 14, second hald with 11 in 13. Consistent throughout. Foden on the other hand was bang average first half of the season and then exploided in February onwards. You look at Foden's record for England it's extremely poor, 1 goal in 21 games in major competitions/qualifiers, 3 in friendlies.
Foden's a brilliant player for Guardiola but he shouldn't be starting for England
Foden and Palmer would be two very good rotation /sub options for Saka. We don't need them all to start.
He played in the 10 against real madrid and smashed it?
I think you're being a bit harsh on Foden considering he was voted player of the season mate. You're being mad disrespectful. Club wise anyway. But the Foden issue is a tricky one for sure. Especially without Shaw.
Agreed, Foden is thick
Dunk ahead of Branthwaite is spot on. Experienced leader is worth having in the squad.
TAA should start as right back, he offers attacking options on the right that Walker doesn't. Gallacher is really important for us to keep a clean sheet as we'll be able to retain possession in attack
We need Wharton as well
@@Bullet-Tooth-Tony- He won't start but I would love to see him play more. Hard to see how he'd offer something we need in replacement for either Rice or Gallacher - considering we have Bellingham
He can't defend. He's not a midfielder. He doesn't actually get many assists, he hits a good long ball 1 in 3. This man is a fkin charlatan. When you last see him score a free kick?
I really want to see some bravery from Southgate. If Kane is lagging at any point, please change the system and bring on Toney and Watkins and go for it. Make some big decisions rather than whether to play an extra defender in an attack position FFS
trent in to kane, kane feeding everyone around him. or trent in to kane and header goal basically
I was hugely impressed by TAA during his recent interview with Neville. Seems like a very intelligent footballer who's eager to learn and grow. I feel he may surprise people with how well he plays the CM role.
Alternatively, if we're playing a high press and high defensive line, we could do worse than pair Walker with Stones as CB, which gives you Walker's pace while allowing TAA to attack from RB.
Trent should start, we absolutely dominate possession and we play the most defensive back 4 possible. If we play a left footed left back then I'll accept a benched Trent and play Wharton left side of the midfield. We need left footers at CB, lb and left centre mid. Then play opposite footers out wide. The balance just seems absolutely fked at the moment. Trent is better attacking from deep, on the turn, he just don't have what Wharton, mainoo, rice, Bellingham, Foden etc etc have! He's a an attacking defender, not a defensive attacker
If we were going to experiment I’d go with almost a 3-6-1
Walker,Stones,Guehi at the back
Trent and Saka as wing backs
Rice in front
Foden and Bellingham
Then Kane.
Let’s hope that Iceland was not supposed to be an example of Southgate pressing. It was terribly sluggish and lazy
He in fact went on to be the one to be dismissed vs Serbia 😂
Goal happened just like the thumbnail 😂
Honestly why the actual f*ck would he get number 8 shirt if hes playing Right Back
At this rate, the two Adam's will be arguing about the odds of Taylor Swift topping the group charts with Katy Perry's "Dark Horse"...branching out into pop-culture now are we?
Cole Palmer looks like Napoleon Dynamite.
Here's the hot take
England's new system of a high press means that Foden shouldn't play. Bellingham is the better 10 at it so he plays, Gordon or Eze are much better at doing it from the left so they play.
Foden is Bellinghams understudy, he plays only if Bellingham doesn't.
TAA in midfield I can see more of a case for, but it's literally never worked.
How hasn’t it? He was fundamental in the midfield for Liverpool. Just because in transition he gets in to RB for Liverpool, Don’t mean he’s been playing there. That was just his defensive positioning, he had to play a hybrid role, in possession he was always in midfield. People criticising him in the last few years because he was sometimes caught out in defence don’t realise he was trying to get back there from a cm starting position. He was integral to klopps system, and it was extremely difficult to play a hybrid role like that. I’m look forward to seeing him just being an to focus on one position and having cover behind him .
Yes but
This isn't Liverpool.
For England TAA has never been anything but poor in midfield.
Playing as a right back who moves into midfield is not playing in midfield.
Liverpool is not England.
TAA has never played well when starting in midfield for England.
@@Spuzzell that’s false
@@Spuzzelldid you even watch the friendlies? Trent was immense. Definitely the best player in both games.
Yes, but in the friendlies he replaced Walker as a right back. In midfield he has never been good for England.
It's obviously a doubt pivot. I think you're the first person I've seen talk about that midfield set up that assumes it will be Rice as a lone holder. Hello?
Does 442 have an intentional plan to only have Adams present?
i think gareth is leaning towards playing him. he probably will look at how he performs alongside rice and jude. gordon will shine i feel it
Really liked this video, and they style of it. Different to the other Adam, but enjoyable
The idea of not playing the best passer of the ball in the country is beyond stupid. He is a player the team should be built around. Along with Bellingham and perhaps foden.
What I love England, once the first game goes well, watch everyone go crazy 😂
Like the Germans are doing right now, and every other team in the world after a good game. But you only speak English so you're only able to understand English fans / media
Imho England should go 3-4-3 and stick Bellingham and Rice in the middle with TAA and Gordon the sides and up front Kane Saka and Palmer. Use Eze/Foden as subs for attacking and Gallagher/Mainoo for defending as needed.
The fallacy is that Foden has to start instead of being a tactical sub imho. First thing is to get England's attacking players firing and using Bellingham/Rice/TAA to feed. Gordon and Palmer are intelligent players and versatile too for midfield pressing and attacking also. Dominate midfield, protect the defence and it should be enough with the attacking quality and sub impacts England have to shift gears...
I guess England are stuck with 4 at the back however. If so on that basis agree TAA in next to Rice and Bellingham up the field a bit more. Again I'd go for Palmer/Gordon over Foden on the left and use Foden to mix things up if needed as impact sub eg work the attackers in pressing and sub off for fresh legs.
Great video, enjoying this content! Keep them coming
Trent plays in midfield with jude and rice. They handle the dm and box to box stuff whle trent focuses solely on attacking
Two city fans on one podcast, call David Attenborough 😂
You'll be proven wrong about Trent against lesser teams. Southgate has no patterns of play and needs creative individual performances against lesser teams. Against more deliberate top notch teams, I can understand playing Gallagher, but not against Serbia.
I would play two 10s, Bellingham and Palmer (not Foden), with Gordon and Saka as wingbacks, Trent slightly ahead of Rice, and a back 3 of Guehi, Stones, and Walker.
I think Foden (and Rodri) will have little impact at the Euros, because they only know Guardiola's system. They're great players, but will struggle for impact outside that system.
That inside right midfield role is perfect for trent. Same role as de bruyne
We were trying to make less midfielders so the Foden and Bellingham could both start! Not more 😊 1:57
Bellingham, Rice and TAA. Be honest... it could be a lot worse. Issue is actually behind them... Stones should be at his peak... Guehi too early.
I started writing this and the lad said Harry Maguire. Where's the bloke? Get the bloke, hun...
Sure but rice did play as the 6 at west ham and has nearly his whole england career. Hes only recently been shifted to an 8 since moving to arsenal
Deluded City fans as per
I'd agree with this and when England attack they leave gaps far too often and that was so evident in the friendly against Iceland. Walker has the pace and engine to support an attack but also get back, and Trent has the awareness where he's played the role of RB to act as a playmaker, with his passing range, in midfield, but then also cover Walker when he goes forward. Essentially Trippier or the LB making a 3 at the back and Rice and Trent offering a holding midfield 2, with Walker pushing forward to support the attack
Klopp has played Trent in midfield. This is bait guys
Can't get that daft vindaloo song out my head now...thanks a lot
Could you guys cover why Southgate didn't pick Eric Dier at some point? I've been finding it so odd that he didn't even make the provisional squad!
Here, I’ll help you.
He’s crap
City fan doesn't like Trent starting in when there's a better RB. But Bellingham has to be out of his best position as an 8 so foden can play 10. Solid logic
Trent should be told we have better players in that position but we will need to rely on wasted Foden on the left. Then suggesting to drop Jude. Bro you said you could pick anyone maybe you shouldn't pick clowns though.
This isnt Fifa. It's not just about fielding your best players. With such a weak central defence I think we need Gallagher alongside Rice for protection. And then Trent can be a supersub.
0:14 Yorors 🤣🤣
Completely disagree with your guest. TAA has played midfield for Liverpool and is not being shoehorned in. He also mentioned Spain who literally shoehorned 6 midfielders in at the 2010 World Cup to win it - without a recognised striker.
Should play gordon at LW .. need a runner to go beyond kane like Son at tottenham
Klopp didn’t do it because his whole system was built around the fullbacks with the work horses to facilitate the fullbacks
How is this bloke even in the squad with four assists all season? Absolute joke.
Put Phil Foden anywhere in this England team and he won't work. He's literally just a Pep Guardiola player, he was designed to be the perfect Pep player. He's never been good for England, even when he's played in the 10. In fact his best period for England was at the WC when he played left wing against Wales and Senegal and scored 1 goal and 2 assists. Probably his two best games in hsi England career.
Instead of playing a right back as the left back, play a back three Walker - Stones - Guehi. Wharton as left MF, Rice centre MF AND Trent as left MF. Foden Bellingham Sake upfront behind Kane. That'll be 3-3-3-1
What about me, do i get a Prize for this?
These added graphics are so funny lol
Can we please stop saying it’s coming home
conceding goals hadnt been a big problem... breaking down a low block has been... Trent In
Serbia will line up differently if TAA plays , than if he doesn’t . If he starts , they will be aware of his passing ability and play more defensively . If Foden starts , and TAA can give the top end the ammunition , England could really shine . TAA in midfield is a risk for sure , but we can’t have another Iceland debacle , because the quality is up top - , and just for once we could see some style - a good chance to lay down a marker
Thanks Adam, Hope to see your coverage of England just before the final. Its coming hoooooome.
Why isn't there a case made for Saka on the left? & He was previously a left back
It's comin oooom 😂👍
Tldr it's Maguire
Every time it's this guy hosting I just don't want to watch
Foden is completely overrated and never achieves at the top level. Hope he can prove me wrong.
Where is Clery? I don't want you I want Clery
Scoros you mean

Worst piece ever. I always see Adam and to my surprise this and man, total BS
Do I get a prize for this
No
Tedious
Okay I know you are an England based but please do videos on someone else than England and United. The whole football analysis movement was in some ways a response to tv "experts" spiralling through the same content. You are starting to become the exact thing you were created in spite off. Please do something else.
who are these children?
Not one world class player between eng or serbia thats what you get a rubbish game of football.the standards of football has dropped so much....the epl is over rated
This lad is talking absolute shite 😂
Phil Foden all day long
Hahahahhahahhahahahahhahahahhahahahahahhahahahahhahha
You’re trying way too hard to be funny. Just give us football content and relax, it’ll be better.
first
It would be really nice if the channel covered non UK teams aswell...
It's a British channel, why should they?
Booo.We want Adam
Trent behind saka is different than tren behind salah. Salah is a lazy C" nt saka tracksback every action for his full back.
Saying 'It's coming home' is pretty damn funny considering its never been won by England
The song is a reference to inventing the game lol why do foreigners keep commenting on cultures they don't understand?
I'd rather see bellingham rice playing as a double pivot, foden playing in the middle, gordon starting on the left. I imagine if he wants Trent starting Southgate will be playing for set pieces, which is a bit defensive and a waste of our attacking talent, as well as leaving our defence a bit weak.
And saka??
@@aarushshah2007 saka on the right as is. Sorry meant Gordon on the left.
Bellingham is like dele Ali... he is a second striker. Expecting him to play in the pivot is dumb.
@@hebisty4163 he can play as a 6, 8, or 10. He's not a second striker and has been used as a box crashing 10 this season at Madrid because they didn't have a 9. His best position is an 8, which he can sort of do in a double pivot role with Rice as the main DM. With the quality England have in attack they should be dominating possession in the opponent's half anyway.
@@oitoitoi1 but he hasn't played at 6 or an 8 for a while. You say he isn't a second striker but proceed to describe a second striker... they sit deep in between the mid and def then run in the box late. Aka a second striker .
Who is this lesbian and what have they done with the Geordie ?
Trent can't be trusted in defence for England.
walker has more mistakes leading to goal this season than trent
and walker attacking contribution isnt anywhere near trents
Trent also has been better than walker in defensive actions per 90 minutes. While being superior in every other way. Stop spreading bollocks propaganda about England's best playmaker.
Have you ever watched Rodri play?
As a massive hater I'll definitely check out the channel😂🫡
No-one recognises citys "success" ... we all know you cheated and you are a pathetic club.
