honestly adam clery is the best analyst I've ever seen, ever time I watch a video of his... I get mind blown, props to him bro.. he should consider being an actual coach
Of course they had a system I think the coach got the team selection wrong Mactominay usually plays further forward but against Germany he was too deep and Scotland got their pressing wrong or rather they lacked intensity and weren't as organised as needed. In conclusion they Scotland had a system but didn't execute it properly
@@yungdkay1008 Whatever the system was it can't have involved any marking. The german attackers had miles of space standing in between the midfield and the defence the entire game and no-one picked them up. Zero press, zero marking - sit back and let them take free shots from the edge of the penalty area seemed to be the system we were employing. We had 5 at the back yet our defence was constantly getting flanked. Woeful performance of a negative tactic. The entire team was lost at sea for the full 90 minutes. 5-1 flattered us. Tony Kroos had 101 completed passes, Scotland had 192.
@@fireblade2681 They didn't have miles of space. It's true that they had some space, but Musiala, Wirtz and Gündogan really know how to create chances if you give them 2 meters - second and third goal are perfect examples
Its just like in the old Beckenbauer times, when he was leading the ball, the opponents defense reverently withdrew instead of attacking and disturbing him or forcing him to pass back or even making a mistake. This time Kroos obviously had Beckenbauers role.
Bad clip of Che Adams in the middle of this video somewhere only 2 yards away from kroos and somehow not pressing him. Knew it was going to be bad when Tierney celebrated a block 2 minutes in like it was a game winning tackle in the 90th minute. Need to question Clarke's inability to alter the system early doors as it was obvious it wasn't working. Good video, maybe send a link to the sfa.
it seemed like they'd been told 'don't press him, that's what he wants' - maybe, but he also wants loads of space to pick out any pass he chooses. whatever it was, Scotland needed to do the opposite
I understand that the "5 - de-facto 0" result is very bitter for all the Scots. But we Germans LOVE the 200,000 Scottish fans here. You left a very good impression with all of us. Scottish fans are polite, nice, friendly, funny, all in all just adorable. You guys are good sportsmen. We gave a couple of free beers to the saddest Scottish fans we could find in order to cheer them up a bit. There are more chance for you to come!
Yeah, I don't see us qualifying to the knockout stages; not ending up on zero points is good enough for me. A good result against Hungary (could be tough, they're solid) and you never know, but it's highly unlikely.
I think the Netherlands play a really interesting system tactically. On paper they line up as a 4-2-3-1, but in possession it becomes more like a 3-4-2-1 with a lot of movement up front, while they drop into a 4-4-2 to press much like arsenal. Also shows really well why you want multifunctional players (like Aké who can play both LB and LCB, or Geertruida doing the same on the other side)
German co-presenter Christoph Kramer (the guy with the concussion in the 2014 WC final) said (according to his journalist colleague) "It's going to be 3:0 at halftime" after 17 seconds because there was no hard pressing from Scotland and if you don't press Kroos, you die. I'd noticed that they weren't doing that, but now I understand why they couldn't from their system. It is also slightly "unfair" to have Rüdiger, Kimmich, Kroos plus the two wingers be able to play long-ass pass to the other side of the pitch. No wonder they were able to get the Scots into hectic shifts.
Love this breakdown of the game. Kroos was outstanding on Friday. You cannot give someone like Kroos time on the ball, he will destroy you. Germany looked good.
Swtizerland definitely have the players to do this. Granit Xhaka can do the passes Kroos can most of the time. Scotland has to raise their game quite a bit to compete.
Before previous Scotland video I had a feeling that highlanders will win. After watching video, my confidence grew up. I put some money on W2, what a feeling! I guess there is nothing under the kilt after 0 shot on target and horrible overall performance
Great analysis. Adams McGinn and christie didnt do any pressing and our whole system collapsed so that all must be on Clarke. Not only did we not press Kroos once, we also didnt press the recipients of his passes. It was an insane performance from Scotland. Our back 5 was so narrow it effectively resembled more a back 4 with 2 left backs getting in our way. YES thr German plan was good but not in their wildest dreams would Scotland not made one press all night. We should revert to a 352 or a more stable 4231 for thr Swiss game.
We did the same and never pressed croatia in the last euro,s and gave Modric the freedom of Hampden park. Insanely bad performance and tactics last night.

Because there are many other players to be careful of. When they pressed Kroos space would open up for Wirtz or Musiala on the sides and an unsuccessful press could lead into a massive opposition chance
@@janekmundt579 this. it did look like they'd been told not to press Kroos too closely in order to give themselves the chance to press other players. the basic problem is that Germany have way better players than Scotland so if you stop one of them, they still have others who can hurt you. For example Rüdiger and Tah both are capable of playing those sorts of balls into the forwards, and they did. They might have a similar problem in the next game, trying to stop Xhaka but Akanji ends up hurting them
Switzerland looked pretty good today and certainly have the incisive attacking threats to make that ponderousous Scotland defence look the League 1 standard it is overall.

Good analysis. Really tough game to watch for us Scotland fans. We haven’t been in good form leading into the tournament, losing so many goals due to choosing to play mostly top end teams in friendlies.
@9:31 Che doesn't even jog towards Kroos... Che should've been running his guts out first half, with the intent of gassing out at the hour mark ready to be subbed. He didn't. it was by no means the only issue, but game 1. starting as lone striker, you must run yourself ragged first half. get a breather half time, then use whats left in the tank for 15mins then expect to get hooked for another stiker at 60mins.. Next game it will probably be the other way round.
Toni Kroos does that pass in Real Madrid all the time. And he drops into the leftback position all the time in Madrid as well. It's NOT a surprise. If you watched La Liga, you would have known. This is what living in the Premier League bubble does to you.
yes I think the people who are saying 'what system?' are wrong - in fact Scotland stuck too hard to their system and didn't play what was in front of them. which was, admittedly, a set of players who are much better than them (with the exception of Robbo of course)
Mate. I like your tactical analysis but lasted less than 3 mins into this video because of the awful background musak. WHY? For what? It literally adds nothing, and is just an irritating noise that you are competing with. Please, please stop using pointless background musak.
honestly if you don't take out Kroos by applying pressure, it's like not guarding Kyrie or Luka tightly, you are gonna get ripped apart. Toni is old, if you get up in his face and physical he will not be able to do his thing and his accuracy suffers at least a little. I mean the others had a good day too, but that is really the only thing Scotland did badly wrong. They could have real hurt them, but no hustle no chance
They said the pressure was all on Germany, but I think the massive Scotland support put the pressure on Scotland. Good analysis on Scotland being pulled apart, I still don't really understand what happened.
The main thing that struck me was how scared Scotland were playing from the moment the match started - they conceded over two thirds of the pitch immediately, and gave the ball back to the Germans from their own third of the pitch constantly. Even worse than that, when they were 2-0 down and getting absolutely hammered, they just stuck to their plan and setup. To maintain that plan is the manager effectively saying 'this is fine', and that's just so disappointing. Get Gilmour and Shankland in the starting lineup, and have a go at the opposition. Hickey, Patterson, Ferguson and Doaks are sorely missed in this team but it still has enough quality in it to look like it belongs here - so long as they actually attempt to play back at their opponent and don't cower on the outskirts of their penalty box.
Patterson and ferguson arent starters for scotland and Doak has never played for scotland and hardly plays at full club level so not sure how you think they would have made a difference.🤣
@@euanmacleod3738 Patterson maybe slightly better but he has also been shocking in his last few games for scotland. Ferguson cant get a start for scotland so you cant say he is better untl he proves it. And doak cant get a game at club level so not sure whats hard about that?.
@@jackjones1249 your eyetest isn't amazing if you're comparing the players directly. Ferguson is more debatable but still clearly better than what we have the bench, and is better in possession than everyone but gilmour. At the least they all make the squad deeper.
@@euanmacleod3738 Doak is a good prospect but has done nothing to say he would have made a difference lastnight. What did Gilmour do when he came on lastnight?. I dont rememeber him hardly touching the ball never mind being good in possession.
As a Scotland supporter, we knew we were done as soon as the lineup was announced. We went for a single (defensively questionable) 6 against a team that exploits the gap between the midfield and defense. It was obvious that we'd do really badly at handling Germany defensively just thru numbers, and that we'd struggle to play out, given fewer options and without Gilmour's press-resistance. Instead we had a midfield diamond, something we haven't played, hence defensive disorganisation, and all because Clarke is in love with Christie for some reason. So the problem started in picking an obviously inappropriate system, but Clarke seems to be getting away with no criticism. Clarke himself seems to be claiming he was playing 4D chess, but the players were too stupid to understand it. Imagine the pelters Southgate would get in this situation.. but Clarke is bullet-proof and no one wants to say it was his mistake.
It’s alright being compact being tight, but Scotland are not Atletico Madrid some years ago where they have stunning players who can break especially out wide and cause you real problems.
Depressed? Did you honestly expect any different? Scotland and the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
@@baked_beans3148 You're arguing semantics (severely botching grammar and orthography, might I add) while I made a statement about how the game went. Read the room like Nagelsmann and Kroos did.
Bc of the way Germany played, Schotland kept having to choose between pressing and letting space free for another player or just wait and let them progress further into the pitch. So they ended up doing neither
@@baked_beans3148 Semantics based on bad grammar and orthography. Way to go. Pray tell in how far this system was visible against Germany making it worth debating my pointy little comment.
"whatever you think about that sending off"?! that has to be a joke. is there anyone who genuinely thinks porteous' brutal tackle against gündogan did NOT deserve a straight red?!
The problem's the system, right. A single 6 against Germany is insane as it leaves the defense horribly exposed. Then make that 6 McGregor, who's not really a 6 and never has been, and Germany can quite easily (due to their quality) bypass our midfield and attack the back 3 at will. The defense is used to having 2 sitters in front of it, so suddenly the learnt knowledge of how to handle different situations, who's marking who, when players are handed off is all out the window. Because we have one 6. McGinn and McTominay are locked into defensive positions, so their ability to press is hindered. Christie is stuck in there to float around and be pointless. And McGregor is literally one of the worst 6s I've ever seen. He wants to be an 8 all the time, but lacks recovery pace and generally just jogs around even when chasing back as in this clip. Clarke set us up to win the areas of the pitch that didn't matter, and left us horribly exposed in the areas that Germany obviously wanted to be in, i.e. the gap between our midfield and defense. And not only that, we stayed that way for 90 minutes, like Clarke couldn't see the problem that we all was before the match even kicked off! This was probably the most inept managerial performance I've ever seen, and Clarke doesn't seem to be getting any criticism for it at all.
I found the were not pressing or chasing down the ball, of the ball movement was poor, the were too bunched up at times and went they lost possession the opposition capitalised on there errors and not sticking to there players and giving them too much space and time to make decisions and effectively sufferd.
Honestly, you can't stop kross's crosse's. Even if you mark him aggressively he will always find that one sneaky cross that will turn the match around and that is what he does for Real madrid. The guy sits back on the german side which is even difficult to mark, as the attacking midfielders and strikers have to also concentrate on taking the ball and scoring goals they cannot effectively mark kroos. He has been doing this in Real Madrid, No hard feelings, Scotland is not strong than bayern Munich or Manchester united or barca these teams couldn't stop kroos then how can Scotland??
I liked your analysis of the game strategies and can see how Kroos unhinged the Scottish game plan. But there was a more fundamental reason why Scotland was so horrible. When a Scottish player had the ball (a rare event), there were two Germans on him immediately. When a German player had the ball, there were were three of four Scottish players backing off.

10:33 it’s called a dogs leg in rugby
‘They pulled the inside centre forward, forming a dogs leg and the angles formed diagonally to the players each side of the centre lets the attacker run right through them being out of reach of anyone wanting to tackle them 10:33
Could you make a video on why everyone should fear Denmark?
Thank you, from Sweden.
RIP Sweden
Lol, definitely a Dane masquerading as a Swede here. :p
Great analysis. Thank you for it.
Absolutely, he helped me understand why Kroos was sooo free and why Scotland seemed helpless.
honestly adam clery is the best analyst I've ever seen, ever time I watch a video of his... I get mind blown, props to him bro.. he should consider being an actual coach
Scotland had a system?!
yeah, they demonstrated it great against Spain in qualifers. Strong organized defence then a quick counter.
Of course they had a system
I think the coach got the team selection wrong
Mactominay usually plays further forward but against Germany he was too deep and Scotland got their pressing wrong or rather they lacked intensity and weren't as organised as needed.
Exactly. There was no system for anything. Defence was 90+% of the equation. Without the ball they stood and admired Toni Kroos.
As a Scotland fan, I hated the result, but this video is outstanding to explain what went wrong... Well done
Granit Xhaka says, "Challenge accepted."
The Scottish Midfield pushed forward. The Scottish Defence stood still.
So the Germans just filled the gap. Game Over.
6:56 „Its f** Toni Kroos..“
Toni: falls on his nose while playing the ball
Ball ends up perfectly on Kimmichs foot.
The only good thing about Scotland is that retro 88 top you're rocking Adam 👌
Great upload, do the England game. Also can you ring up Southgate and explain his job to him.
But they don't have wusiala to move scotland from side to side. Will be a game with much less offensive actions at least
@@jackjones1249 Clarke has to go after this tournament. He can't take them any further and he must have lost a lot of respect by now for his tournament management
@@ajsctech8249 Agreed even if by some miracle we got through to the next round i still think a change of manager and change of system is the best way forward for the world cup.
@@jackjones1249 Yep we need to risk something new even if that risks going backwards. I guess Moyes, Lambert , Alex Neil maybe McIness will be the front-runners.
@@ajsctech8249 Are they any different than Clarke tbh?. We need a forward thinking manager that offers something different. Although its hard to get one that wants to manage at international level and not club level.
Scotland played well , but Germans, Frenchs, Spanishs and Italians drop a golden generation every 20years +\- and become unbeatable for some years - remind Brazil 2014, 4 goals in 6 minutes vs Brazil
Brighton fan here
Really missed Billy boy ❤❤
Really missed Hickey. Gilmour should be in next game. Hopefully in place of McGregor
has Steve Clarke never watched Real Madrid? Tony Kroos sits in the same spot every game dictating play. Why was no one stepping on his toes all game?
Because there are many other players to be careful of. When they pressed Kroos space would open up for Wirtz or Musiala on the sides and an unsuccessful press could lead into a massive opposition chance
@@janekmundt579 this. it did look like they'd been told not to press Kroos too closely in order to give themselves the chance to press other players. the basic problem is that Germany have way better players than Scotland so if you stop one of them, they still have others who can hurt you. For example Rüdiger and Tah both are capable of playing those sorts of balls into the forwards, and they did. They might have a similar problem in the next game, trying to stop Xhaka but Akanji ends up hurting them
And how about much needed love for Naggs as he has done an amazing job for the short time he has been the manager.
As a german, that was painful to watch. I mean, I wanted them to win, but that was brutal.
In all actuality, I love it. I'm not German, but I am a fan of the national team since I were a kid.
Agreed, watching the Scottish fans in Munich has me wanting to visit some time in my life.
First class Fans , unlike the Hooligans from England.
Switzerland looked pretty good today and certainly have the incisive attacking threats to make that ponderousous Scotland defence look the League 1 standard it is overall.
Great analysis! I wish you all the best with the new software launch 🚀
Love the new studio
ngl i do love your content and my analysis will never be as good as yours but even I knew that saying teams should be scared of Scotland was fever dream mode
Good assessment. Tragic. Hope Clarke sees this because clearly he has no clue.
From his interviews since he thinks he's the smartest guy in the room and it was all the players fault. Insane.
no podés no presionarlo a Tony
Good analysis. Really tough game to watch for us Scotland fans. We haven’t been in good form leading into the tournament, losing so many goals due to choosing to play mostly top end teams in friendlies.
like Gibraltar?
@@GuyJames France, Netherlands, England.
Sack the Irn Bru - You'll be reaching for the Buckfast after Switzerland 😅
Sometimes you have to press the man with the ball and mark the player, not the space.
The system and formation were shocking, set the lads up for a doing and got one.
1000% this.
Hindsight is always 20/20! After the game is before the game in a major tournament. Scotland now have to do better in their last two games.
HAHA there's not a chance of that Jock.
Love the content!
Could you cover Hungary's games as well (like against Switzerland)? Would be interesting to see.
I started watching and realised I'ml too depressed to watch this 😂
It's also hard for Scotland to make any plays when Germany has a 70% possession of the Ball.
Too many players were sticking rigidly to the system. Robertson was too worried about marking space to close Kimmich down.
yes I think the people who are saying 'what system?' are wrong - in fact Scotland stuck too hard to their system and didn't play what was in front of them. which was, admittedly, a set of players who are much better than them (with the exception of Robbo of course)
Now that you are a Germany fan, will you also analyze the following games?
You have good approaches, I like it. Greetings from good old Germany
Mate. I like your tactical analysis but lasted less than 3 mins into this video because of the awful background musak. WHY? For what? It literally adds nothing, and is just an irritating noise that you are competing with. Please, please stop using pointless background musak.
I didn't notice it in this video but agree that too many videos on here have distracting and too-loud bg music
13:53 Adan Nàgy and Granit Xhaka ask someone to hold their beer
honestly if you don't take out Kroos by applying pressure, it's like not guarding Kyrie or Luka tightly, you are gonna get ripped apart. Toni is old, if you get up in his face and physical he will not be able to do his thing and his accuracy suffers at least a little. I mean the others had a good day too, but that is really the only thing Scotland did badly wrong. They could have real hurt them, but no hustle no chance
You know we need that England vs Serbia analysis
They said the pressure was all on Germany, but I think the massive Scotland support put the pressure on Scotland. Good analysis on Scotland being pulled apart, I still don't really understand what happened.
The team was obviously told not to press Kroos and let him play long balls. You really question if Clarke actually knows how to setup a football team.
@@jackjones1249 they're better than the players in those roles on the pitch. Not sure what's hard about that?
Tell you what else didn't help. Having your primary goal threat and set piece monster Scott mctominay *taking* long free kicks.
We where beaten on the tactic board as much as on the field.
We beat ourselves. Clarke deserves criticism, but for some reason he's not getting it.
I'm still depressed, but at least I now know why. Thanks Adam...
Depressed? Did you honestly expect any different? Scotland and the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Its 1 game. , Scotland is not out of it yet. After all They did qualify .
There wasn't a system to break.
yes their was, they demonstrated it great against Spain in qualifers. Strong organized defence then a quick counter.
I just realized, if the tumbnail is in red frame, it's Adam Clery.
Did I just see the Nigerian flag at the top left corner?... Shouldn't it be only European countries'flags that should be there?
Your 👀 sharp sha
Because 1 out of every 4 blacks in europe are Nigerians
None of the colors or patterns around that "nigerian flag" add up to any european flag. So its probably just a pattern of green and white.
You just can't allow a player like Kroos that much time and space.
"whatever you think about that sending off"?! that has to be a joke. is there anyone who genuinely thinks porteous' brutal tackle against gündogan did NOT deserve a straight red?!
How did NOBODY even attempt to stop that pass at 10:10? - absolutely piss poor defending and ball watching that is.
What's up with that frame rate?
I don't know who Tony Cruise is but he sounds like a great player. Probably got a future at a big club
I'm curious what the potential outcome would have been if Scotland focused on remaining compact and simply forfeited the wide spaces?
5:1
Germany did destroy Brazil 7-1 in the World Cup in 2014, so Scotland can take some consolation in being in good company. Kroos featured then too.
the guy's name isn't CRUISE, it's Kroos with a long thick O sound ... and the other one that you constantly butcher ist WIRTS with "i" ... the i that sounds like "e" ... pls stop calling him "Wörts"
Like Kr-oh-ss?
It was the worse performance in an opening game by any team at any Euros ever!
You were never going to have a good day playing the hosts in the first game and it's Germany as well, you're never going to win......
Kroos pass completion rate: 99% with 102 of 103 complete passes...
First, divide 102 by 103:
