This video guitar lesson is designed to teach you all of the beautiful guitar parts for "Dust In The Wind" by Kansas. This song is one of the most popular fingerstyle guitar guitar pieces ever written. As incredible as this song sounds it is actually only one fingerpicking pattern throughout, making it a great piece to learn.
The fingerpicking style that we are working with in "Dust In the Wind" is called Travis picking. Travis picking is the technique of using the thump to pick two repetitive bass notes to create a rhythmic and harmonic foundation for the song. It is used by not only Kansas, but by such players as Lindsay Buckingham and Chet Atkins as well.
Within these video lessons you will learn all of the intricacies of this gorgeous piece of music from the acoustic guitar parts to the viola/violin solo. That's right, in this video guitar lesson series I have also arranged the classic viola and violin solo section for guitar to give you a complete study of this classic rock masterpiece.
There are actually two guitars playing during the original recording of "Dust In The Wind". One guitar is in standard tuning and the other is using Nashville tuning. Nashville tuning is the process of tuning the EADG (6543) strings an octave higher than standard. This almost gives a 12 string guitar effect to the song. Within this video guitar lesson I will be using a standard tuned guitar throughout. Good luck!!

Thanks for this video. Here is a word of advice to all players. Please do not be intimidated by others. We all learn at a different pace. The objective is to enjoy the process. If you are slow at learning it will just require more patience and a lot of faith. If he can do it, you can do it. It isn't about showing off . Beauty and grace are not quantifiable qualities. Never give up. Good luck.

@@mikkelhoelgaard149 if you're referring to the 1-0-3-1 thing he's talking about what fret should be pressed on the B string for each iteration of the chord. So if you're on the C chord playing the first iteration of it you'd pick these notes:
      -X-
      -3-
      -2-
      -0-
-1- (this is the fretted note that changes)
      -0-
That C (1) note on the B string will be open (0) on the next iteration, then it will be on the 3rd fret, then back to the 1st before changing to the A minor chord. (1-0-3-1)
Hope this helps, cuz I was confused for a moment too

I have been dragging my learning for years, fifty to be exact! Retired now and hardcore committed. I have picked up songs over the years, by ear mostly, a little theory here and there and some really bad habits LOL. So, for the last six months, four hours a day, most days, theory for two hours, two practice on TH-cam. You have the best explanation of song tabulation so far that I’ve found. It’s funny how many guitar players are out there and their styles and even there ways of playing songs. Let me ask one thing of you. I am old school, I guess, I can follow tabs, and it’s an easy way to learn a song. Doesn’t do much for learning music though I was taught notes in school, back before computers, LOL and I have been looking at the circle of fifths and fret board navigation and theory. And believe it or not it’s sinking in, and how it all relates to guitar. When you show a cord, please explain, briefly the notes you holding, example Dust in the Wind, a C7 cord is comprised of the root C, E, G, (Bb or C). I intend to expand to reading music, I hope, but it help me locate the notes on the board and memorize positions. Hey keep up the great lessons. Dick Winn Pine Grove PA

Excellent tutorial. I really like the 3-1-0 explanation for the melody notes. It is an excellent way to keep track of what comes next. Thanks!!!!!

You teach real well. Its usually seen played so fast it's hard to keep up and know the routines. The finger on,off, pinky on,off. Thank you for your instructions. I feel after getting the picking pattern clean, I'll have it.

Really, really good lesson. I think it's the first lesson on youtube that mentions the 3-1-0 pattern.... that makes the intro so much easier to learn. Also, you teach more than just the intro (unlike others) Thanks a lot!!

Still practising, but this was one of the better tutorials out there. For some reason i didn't learn from the others as well as your 3-1-0-3 pattern

Been off work sick and put alot into learning the pattern. Ive been playing 30 years and never even tried picking. But ive nailed it in a couple of weeks. Not the song. Just the picking. I can hold a conversation and just pop it out.

THank you SOOO much for this awesome tutorial! I decided new year's eve (musical objective for 2015) to learn to play & sing this, looked at many versions online and keep coming back to yours as the most helpful for me. I'm getting there! I always imagined this to be beyond my guitar playing capabilities but it's now within reach and I'm already adding in the singing (a whole other challenge to keep the picking pattern going while thinking about lyrics!) :) Really liked the comment about 1-0-3-1...pattern. Helped it sink in more quickly. :)

I've loved this song for a while now. At first when I was just trying to practice the picking pattern, it was pretty boring. Then I moved on to how the melody notes were changing in the intro, played it for the first time and now I just can't stop :D It just sounds so PERFECT.
I haven't played the guitar in months and it just feels so good to play the intro :) Thanks for this awesome tutorial.
