Free-flowing with an "akau tau" or Tongan war club by Vulpes Training. I have not trained in nor do I claim knowledge of Tongan or other Polynesian martial arts and culture.
Check out www.etsy.com/s... for this and other polymer training weapons.
Music: "Tonga warrior" by Yu Namikoshi. I do not own this music. All copyrights belong to their respective owners.

0:16 bro casually shaking the earth with 4% of his power
Nice bro Im Maori train in Taiaha /mere love seeing other Polynesian weapons and their movements love the flow of the Akau tau looks like it can do some damage. respect
Loved this video, good techniques and great weapon. I live in Hawaii so I have a deep appreciation for Polynesian clubs. Salamat. Mahalo and Aloha.
Thank you for the kind words brotha! Stay safe!
Greetings from the Bataireacht community of Ireland. Brothers in arms.
Greetings!
0:16 i like how the camera shakes when you hit the ground.
Absolutely wicked club, man. And for the record don't let anyone tell you that you need to use it the traditional way in order to use it well. Use your own training and what works for you--it's not magic, it's a club. Nice work.
I'm not an expert to any extent, but that looked like a combinaton of sword, staff and club work. Magnificent to watch and terrifing to imagine someone using that with determined purpose.
No ones going to bring up the tactical kilt????
It's a nice kilt.
Kilts are nice
@jenn8921You clearly haven’t been to Glasgow on a weekend night..
And he absolutely ROCKS that Utilikilt!
Good exercise. Not bad for a big fella, be a nasty shock for anyone who thought "I'll just run around him, wear him out some".
🤣
It's about time we see more about other early fighting styles, It shows you want you can do with a long piece of wood, and for that person who made a comment on the kilt, I wouldn't say that to a Irishman or a Scotsman wearing one...
Brother you are awesome greetings and respects from a Cretan warrior
γεια brother!
It wouldn't be easy to penetrate that defense for sure .. New and improved Walking Tall !
your movements are awesome, scary weapon, respect from Indonesia
Awesome , Man 👌
Thanks ✌️
Frequent direction changes
Large sweeping clearing movements

I come from a background of self-trained sword...
Started creating a sword system based on French stick fighting in the early 90s and then around 2000 started delving into European manuals from the Middle ages. But I've also watched a lot of videos of different sword styles from around the world not to try to learn more so out of interest.
But the techniques displayed here are not very dissimilar from what you'd see with European longsword or Japanese katana. Not overly surprising given it's a primarily two-handed weapon with a flattened section that essentially is like a blade.
He certainly has an intensity to him when he practices I can see a passion in his eyes and fire in his movements!
Thanks! Yeah, I'm not formally trained in Polynesian martial weapons so I'm drawing mostly from body mechanics from our combat system's two handed sword and staff/spear material. The club is heavy and challenging to control. I would imagine for fighting, one will need to use more conservative movements with focus on precision, timing and power, and not the movement shown here... unless one has great endurance. ^_^
Definitely do not want to upset this man. This is the first time of finding out about this weapon & how it is used. I hope to spend some time now to look into the history of the weapon & the people who used it.
Information on Tongan warrior arts are scant. I looked for video examples and couldn't find any. I'm basically using movements from the combat system I currently train in.
Tongans forgot most of their murder history after they had joined the church
I know I'm a couple years late, but this war club was used by a Pacific island people who conquered Pacific Islands. They had a great navy with their boats, canoes, and navigation skills and their clubs were simplistic in design, making it flow very well in the hands dealing great damage.
Nice sword and film :) gretings from Poland and capital of polish saber..... szablotłuk polski
Greetings! Hey, me and my guys are exploring Polish sabre too! You should check out our sparring videos! ^_^
Me whenever I picked up a random stick on my way to school
So graceful.
Great video, i like the music, too!
Thanks!
Man, clubs are so cool
Nice weapon ,very good movement.Go well.
Is this jury or flow style of training? I like smoothnes and balanced foot working.
Greetings from Finland - land of darkness and snow (at least in winter time)
This is just a flow to get used to the weight and ergonomics of the war club, which is different than a staff or spear.
Malo e ngaue toko that was awesome
Thank you! Will post more videos on this weapon soon!
The v-shaped of the end of the weapon looks similar to the Dao machetes used by many of the indigenous nations in Northeast India,
Good form brother your style of fighting is almost exactly the same as to the way i do
Birds of a feather. ^_^
Damn you can move pretty quick for a big dude
Polynesians are incredibly strong and fast people.
True, (big) Polynesian dudes are pretty fast for their size. I'm actually Filipino though, ^_^.
@@1stSpear Filipinos are part of the ancestors of Polynesians that originated in Taiwan. Tagalog and Polynesian languages share quite a few words, and both are Austronesian peoples!
Saw many long sword moves right there..
They're actually spear moves but yeah, if you've trained with longsword then that's what you'll identify them as.
@@1stSpear when you say spear do u mean what I'd call like a polearm, basically a glaive? I don't mean to nitpick I'm genuinely interested in the techniques. Like a spear for swinging and swiping?
So did I , I suppose when it comes down to it there are certain universal moves with similar weapons that are used when using it to its full potential
Definitely good for multiple attackers
Astig! Ang galing,
Salamat!
Well done! Best wishes from Austria!
Thank you for watching!
Awesome and very similar to the Okinawan oar weapon Eiku.
The Tongan barbarian 🔥😎💯🇹🇴
That's racist, hahaha! ^_^
@@1stSpear my bad toko 😆😆
Respect, bruv.
Any hand held weapon you a + an x and a figure 8.

Nice moves. Sick weapon.
Thank you sir!
You looks badass in that kilt with that club man
Thank you!
Do you know if it's related to the Maori Taiaha? It is definitely similar.
Nice video!
They are similar in a sense that they're both clubs; think of the taiaha as a more slender (and lighter?) club with a "spear tip" at the pommel end. I've never held a taiaha to compare, but this club is definitely heavy and I don't imagine I'll use the same movements/intensity in a "battle" 'cause unless you're extremely fit and have great stamina, controlling the weight and momentum of the Tongan war club is not easy and will tire you out quickly. I'm just flowing and showing off, which is why the movements are as you see. If anything, it's a great strength training weapon for sure and has actually improved my core and joint strength/flexibility on my arm and shoulder joints. I highly recommend it! ^_^
@@1stSpear Interesting! I definitely wouldn't have guessed it was as heavy as you described...it looks like it would be light & you definitely move with it!
@@1stSpear I hope you make some more videos man.
@@kirkcavenaugh758 Spring is here and weather is improving, so keep an eye out. I'll be doing a new one soon.
taiaha is more of a staff in how its used these are clubs. maori also had various similar long heavy clubs too the reason why the taiaha has survived so well compared to other maori weapons is that it also was a weapon of status so even when guns and axes became common it remained just as the patu (people for example fought duels with taiaha or patu.. they decorated them in grat detail but hardly did so with tewhatweha for example).. but other clubs vanished from common use.
Could those clubs kill or would you finish off enemy with spear
It has enough weight to split a skull, so yes. But one has to have impeccable timing, distance management and endurance to wield a Tongan war club because it is heavy. Scary thing is despite its size and weight, it can be thrown at an enemy and you better kill him 'cause unless you have a back-up weapon you're pretty much screwed, lol.
@@1stSpear any information and stories about ancient Tongan raids and warfare?
Excellent......soon to feature in a video game 😂
Mofos better call to put me in that game, that's all I'm sayin'. ^_^
Move like kungfu, hit like Tongan😂
Tong-fu! ^_^
That's pretty cool.
Aztig moves!
It's a unique design, I wonder why it has a v indentation carved at the tip? Like the tongue of a snake!
There were 2; one with the typical convex tip and this variant.
@@1stSpear Interesting, I'm wondering if that snake tongue-shaped tip was used to block and parry an opponent's weapon? By locking and enemies stick between the fork end!
Hi there what can you advise me guru with training with the kali system as a beginner
Thank you
Can you recommend me any books to read pls
Hello. Best thing to do is research the styles/systems that interest you. Ask yourself what is it about that style you like and why you want to train it. Next is to find out if there are instructors, schools, training groups, etc. near you. If there are none where you live, search online for those with online courses and/or are teaching zoom classes.
@@1stSpear thank you guro
Did the Tongans ever actually use Kata like that, or was he just borrowing from Other martial Arts?
I wouldn't know personally. I'm just using my own experience in FMA to free-flow with a Tongan war club. I do the same with other non-FMA weapons.
@@1stSpear Thank you for answering.
I have seen Maori in action with the Mere, and their leaner lighter version of the war staff in traditional form, and It's quite impressive (and intimidating).
The Tongan weapon is heavier, and blunt ended, so I assume the techniques would follow shape, after all one does not use the same form for a sabre that one would use for a foil.
nice
Thanks!
Nice 🙂
Where can I buy an Akau? Thanks 🙏🏽

I've been requesting them and denied.
Bad ass. 👍
looks legit to me.
Tongan wearing a kilt 🤣 I've seen it all
TOKO!
Looks a bit like a Maori taiaha.
That's what I've been told, yeah. I've been trying to get a hold of an actual taiaha but it's mad difficult and this maker doesn't have enough polymer to make one in its proper length.
Looks like a Taiaha..
Yeah, only taiahas are longer and slimmer and has a stabby "tongue." Samoan war clubs have something very similar.
Hell yea- I am a Kenpo guy- I believe Polynesian martial arts are a part of KENPO
NICE!
Your a fit man , I bet you can chop some wood !!.
