- I've compared axes and blunt historical weapons to swords before, but this is a more in-depth discussion of various types of bludgeon, and my updated opinion on a few aspects. It covers the broad category but includes references to specific examples as well, like flanged or spiked maces, indigenous club designs (Polynesian, Native American, African, etc), hammers, some types of polearm, and so forth.
It should be obvious from the way I talk about these things, but here is a disclaimer just in case: This and similar content is meant for entertainment and educational purpose only. I strongly advocate safe, responsible behavior around weapons of any kind.

Maces do not need an edge, just specifically because a blunt weapon unless you get a kill shot with your axe every single time, a blunt weapon is a lot better because 99.9% of the time you are going for a head shot kill shot

Well one is a collection of fetch quests not even related to bards and the other is one of, if not the most developed quest line in the game.
You’re missing an “i” in that last word
Concerning hand shock, one method to reduce (not eliminate) the vibrations is to allow your wrist and grip to slacken upon impact, then taking back control during the tools rebound. Whip the weight forward then snatch it back after impact. The worst pain comes from trying to control the force during impact. This is a necessary technique learned by people in trades that swing repetitively all day.
Funny enough, there's a book in The Elder Scrolls games that gives this exact advice.
Reading it boosts your Blunt skill in Oblivion and One-Handed skill in Skyrim/Online.
@@LendriMujina Oh man I didn't catch that in my play throughs. Embarrased to say but I've rarely read the books in game. I wonder where the game devs learned it from. I had to learn technique to conserve energy in a brush clearing job where I used a machete all day every day.

@@submari1129drummers do it more to have the sticks bounce back up for them, when I chip ice I use a solid steel chipper and basically throw it at the ground because if I keep hold on it it feels like the bones in my hands start to lock up

I've completed nearly every game I've ever played with a pet , a lightning bolt and a mace 😆
In Poland although you were born with the saber the actual weapon for doing someone dirty on the daily was called a nadziak. It was cross between a horsemen's pick and a walking stick.
It was so efficient when it comes to lethality that it was actually banned outside of war time. Back when saber duels were considered an entertaining pass time.
The extra leverage from the walking stick length, combined with a long spike (doubling as a handle in its walking stick configuration) meant that a single connecting blow often ended both the quarrel and the recipient in one strike.
In sabre duels you got some slashes, maybe lost some fingers or an ear. A swing with the nadziak was usually deadly unless it hit the extremities. The swinging motion meant that if you hit the soft belly you ripped the insides to shreds. A hit to the rib cage punctured lungs because of the length of the back spike. And the skull was either punctured or fractured or both.
While it was less good for defense or parrying, there wasn't much need for that after you landed the first blow. It's a scary weapon. Similar to your warhammer, only a longer haft, no top and side spikes, and the back spike is a lot longer leaving room to grip it as a handle or al least half handle in the walking stick configuration.
These alongside with koncerz (a type of estoc) were the preferred anti armor options used by the hussars on military campaigns.
I wish Cold Steel made a longer handle than the one they offer with their warhammer, so it could double as a walking stick. Have you heard of a fokos/fokosh? I believe also called a shepherds axe.
@@puddintame6310 Oh you can buy them easy in Polish highlands. Here they call them "ciupaga". Most are just ornamental tourist attractions (often with a wooden head just for show) but you can find fully functional ones as well if you step off the main tourist paths.
It's one of the main icons of polish highlanders called "góral".
As for nadziak Richard Marsden has a good video, he got one custom built.

Who builds the ciupaga? Are they custom made or commercially manufactured?
@@puddintame6310 Both. On the tourist tracks you will get mass produced ones, often with a wooden head - they are purely decorative or great toys for kids. (i had one long long time ago)
In some shops you will find some that are of higher quality and ornamentation but not fit to chop wood, more of cool and expensive walking sticks. I'd probably suggest these unless you plan to do some reenactments, and even if you do you can find ones that will withstand some wear.
There are some shops that will sell you the real deal - mostly next to traditional blacksmith workshops, but the ones really fit for chopping wood and fighting will probably have to be custom made i think.
The custom made you'll be able to get from most blacksmiths in Poland but they will cost you a little bit, the rest will be available mostly in Tatry that's the southern mountains near Zakopane city.
The good custom made ones will start around 200PLN+ thats not much, 50+$. But they can go up to 1000 PLN thats 250$.
The semi good walking sticks will be around 100-200 PLN. The tourist stuff will be below 100 PLN (around 25$)
The expensive ones can have really intricate wood carving and metal head ornamentation. But i would go for smooth and sturdy.
Blunts, especially maces, are my favorite type of RPG weapons. I just think they look really badass.
They dont just looks awesome there also pretty effective, swords and spears get way to much attention

When I found the dwarven hammer in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt I fell in love and basically didn’t use anything else the rest of the game. I love them in most games just due to the sheer force they produce at the point of impact. Who cares if they eat a third of your stamina with every swing. 🤷🏻♂️

@@arx3516 I used axes for humans and swords for monsters. Humans wear armour and weapons with which to attempt to parry, monsters don't and are usually larger with deeper vitals. Thus the logic.

Training with polehammers and poleaxes with my friend at my local HEMA-club. Yes, we have to be careful, even if the weapon's parts are made of rubber on a wooden pole.

That OG Warhammer is beautiful. Not obnoxiously big, and not small either. Great craftsmanship on it as well. I’d love to learn how to use that.
I've always had a preference for staves and long polearms, particularly for practical / actual use, particularly as a hiker it can be worthwhile to invest in a nice walking stick/battle stave.
I use the base an old broken US Army issue FM antenna. Hold with the base down, you have a nimble longsword size stave, hold at the cut end, you have a 2 hand mace. Great walking stick too...
Would it be better to get a staff made by a Carpenter rather than an Arms Smith?
I prefer axes and blunt weapons (especially warhammers) because in the case of axes they don't need to be really sharp, some can be used as tools and they can do pretty nasty damage to a person

@@dvmpld9103 Commo soldier. The old FM antenna set was never sold as single parts so when the top male screw snapped off in the bottom, it was discard and get a new one.
Be aware that TSA has a hissy fit because it has a coax cable down the middle so they think it is some kind of sword cane. Funny as all get out to watch them try to figure out how to pull the nonexistant blade out.

I mainly use a mace and shield in Kingdom Come: Deliverance because there are no drawbacks besides reach and speed. But one good bonk is all I need.
They made maces way too op. I absolutely love KCD but I think that it's a real shame that swords become obsolete almost immediately. Literally every other melee weapon type trumps swords, whether it's axes, maces, the limited pole arms, I think even shields to an extent.
@@randomfactsthatdontmatter3466 and this is pretty realistic. Most people were using spears, maces, clubs. More effective, cheaper and requires much less training. Swords were more like secondary weapon and reserved for the better off citizens or guard, anyway. You don't see spears or clubs, maces glorified in medieval art because it was considered not noble weapons that were considered brutish and more associated with poorer classes of people

@@jurgisvalancauskas4006 simply not true...particularly in the mid to late middle ages... Then most people could afford swords. Maces, war hammers and clubs are not "more effective" than swords. It depends on context. You see all of those weapons fairly often in medieval art...
I always loved the hammer fight between Willem Dafoe and Michael Pare at the end of Streets of Fire-particularly the way they use the heads of the hammer to defend from each other’s blows or to pull their opponent off balance.

Relatively soft metal like lead or gold. Imagine trying to assassinate a king and getting your head smashed in by his symbolic sceptre.
To add insult to injury, imagine remaining conscious just long enough to see him move into cave your face in with one of those fancy overwrought spheres that often went with the scepter.

It symbolizes the world (the orb) and the power of church and god (a cross, soldered on top of it) while the sceptre symbolizes the power of king/emperor. Earthly ruling power and heavenly ruling power as symbols united within the hands of one - that's basically the idea. sorry for smartassing xD but getting bludgeoned to death by the ultimate symbols of power ... if i have to die, that would be my way of leaving for sure ;D
@@rumpelpumpel7687 it might symbolise the world but was chosen because a mace could penetrate armour. Kings and their bodyguards carried maces to take down plate armoured assassins. Which led to it becoming the symbol of monarchy from the Turks to the English.

The scepter as a sign of power is much older than plate armour, and much older than 'the turks' or 'the brits' as a more or less homogeneous nation. Scepters are already mentioned in the bible and depicted in egyptian culture as well as with some roman dieties. And while you are absolutely right about the fact, that noble men, archdukes and rulers, kings and emperors used to have maces with incredibly detailed ornamentation in high and late medieval times and further on (which originated from the east, probably from the turks), the actual source of idea for the scepter was not to make a bludgeon look pretty and less intimidating. It had become a pure symbole of power. The material used for ruling scepters (mostly precious metal and rich embellishment with gems) made the ruling scepters (like the one that the emperor of holy roman empire would have had, for example) not dangerous to armoured, let alone plate-amoured, attackers at all. But yes, there where very rich ornamented maces that could have done the job quite well. And those did develope wven further with the attacks of a united turkish ppl from the east and became symbols of power for lesser rulers like bailiffs, reeves, heralds, marshalls and other military or civil leaders.

Mauls(two hand club/hammers) where one of the historical great equalizers, along side pikes and crossbows, any reasonably fit shlup can use a maul and most could get one, and as demonstrated no matter how great a high borns armor a hefty maul and a strong swing can still kill and/or maim them

I always found blunt weapons like maces and hammers to be more fascinating than swords. While not as graceful or elegant, they always struck me as being far more versatile, and even terrifying to a degree.
The modern Warhammer will be robots that don’t feel pain and can club you with their arm then rip your limbs off

hammer injuries: fucked up limbs that hurt like hell because all the tissue has gained the consistency of a sausage, bones became splinters and the limb will need to be removed later without anesthetic because medieval times, internal hemorrhage, internal organs ruptured. (brutal af)

The hand shock is a very real issue. I've got some time with maces and staves, and I got so sick of it that I set up a blocking dummy and started wailing on it, trying to build up a tolerance for it. I mostly just got sore hands and wrists.

Historically an advantage of impact weapons is that non-warriors often already had the muscle memory to use them well from manual labor. Meanwhile there is hacking through brush with a blade and whatnot but swords are really more about specialized, developed skill in swinging properly.
For this discussion I’m kind of counting the axe as an impact weapon despite it having a blade... same mass distribution that Skall talked about as with a war hammer, etc.
You need blade alignment for axes, too. The same for machetes and billhooks, sickles and scythes, hoes and pickaxes, etc.pp. The common people being predominently farmers and often forced to do all kinds of handywork either at their lord's lands or their own can be assumed to have plenty of experience of swinging properly. Also, even foot soldiers were often equipped with swords as can be seen for examples on the Saxonians, a germanic tribe named after their short swords.
@@SantaMuerte1813 An axe does need the alignment as well, good point. But I think the way you swing a sword in a fight is very different from pruning with farming tools like billhooks, etc. (back to muscle memory).
I just finished typing up a long-ish comment from a carpenter's perspective, then stumbled on this relevant content.
Object History isn't wrong. The fact that the target is animate, mobile, and trying not to get killed does really change things a lot, but I know just enough about swords to be certain that they have fundamentally different body mechanics that I don't know well. If I'm handed a billhook or a war hammer and told to kill, my first problem is how to deal with the enemy's guard. If I'm handed a sword, my first problem is how to actually cut things with it in one swing.
@@SantaMuerte1813 Axes don't necessarily need a blade alignment to be effective. Primo, you can use the butt of the axe. Microanalysis of the axes found in my country (from the early Middle Ages) showed that butts were made from better material and received better heat treatment than blades suggesting that at least in this region the blunt striking face of an axe was thought to be more important.
Secundo, even if you are trying to use the blade of the axe and mess up the blade alignment, it still can make some serious damage thanks to its mass distribution.

The late Medieval period is a different story. Plenty of written sources, including payrolls that often specified the armament of employed men-at-arms.
@@kamilszadkowski8864 Since my point was to provide arguments that the ordinary levied soldier can be assumed to be able to swing a bladed weapon properly by giving examples of common tools that need edge or point alignment to be used effectively, it follows, that I was talking about axes needing the alignment if you want to actually cut wood with them. And even if those wouldn't need edge alignment to work effectively, the other tools I mentioned do. Heck, even hammers need face alignment, if you dont want to bend or break the nail/rivet/dowel. And couldn't the better heat treatment for the axe butts also simply mean, that they were used as hammers, too? The combo of axe and hammer was very common from Frisia to the Baltics and further south to modern day Poland.
I feel like I recall seeing a manuscript for blunt weapons in which you’d strike an opponents wrist, breaking in it before swinging your weapon around and striking their head. Since then I’ve found blunt weapons simple fascinating

I remember reading about how during a roman civil war a general lured the roman heavy cavalry into a a trap.
They then surounded them and proceeded to beat them with clubs and maces to get around their armour
One reason for a thrust with a stave or other blunt weapon is to knock them off balance, gain some distance (especially staves),etc. Sure you can not really thrust for maximum damage, but tactical advantages can be gained.
Yes, by pointing your weapon strategically (especially with longer reach) you can limit enemy attacking choice/angle.

@@paddlesaddlelad1881 if you hit them just right it can basically end the fight, especially of it's a thrust to the neck. They can be effectively incapacitated for a second or two just catching there breath. During those couple of seconds you can cave therw skull in. Does obviously depend on them not wearing armour where you want to be hitting them, but it's a thing.

As much as I like and favour axes, maces are severely underrated in popular media and they deserve more badass representation in movies and games.

And he's right. Hammer a few nails in and nip them off as spikes and you have a cheap and fearsome weapon.

@@Wastelandman7000 Those nails do come with the risk of splitting the wood, although that risk can be lessened if you use hand forged or cut nails instead of modern round ones.

CON: More exhausting, I know it was brought up that one should always keep the momentum going, but in a stressful situation like combat(or even just sparing), there are so many things going on at once that even if you do remember to do so, it's still likely to not be as efficient as it could be and this will drain you of energy faster.
Also, to the point of impact and shock, that'll also drain you faster. Taking consistent shocks of that level again and again will tire and/or hurt the fingers, wrist, elbow, and even shoulder depending on how the strike connects(if it connects at all), your stance, rigidity of the target, and weight of your weapon. Although, there are mitigating measures that can be taken, like gloves, better handles, stances, certain techniques, etc...
Note: I am not a fighter, nor a martial artist, nor am I as experienced in Skall is. Not even a novice. I have, however, swung a hell of a lot of hammers, sledges, pickaxes, mauls, axes, mallets, etc... I am *more* than aware of the pain of shock from badly designed or cheap handles, and have been(and am at the time of writing) exhausted by the impact of the tools more than the swinging of them. Shock can severely hurt you, and can do permanent damage to joints, tendons, and ligaments.
Note-Part-Two: This is from experience and from what Skall has taught me about his craft. I could have(and probably did) got something wrong, or misjudged something from what Skall has taught me. The only thing I am certain of is the effects and importance of impact shock and its mitigation, which is where my real-world experience lies.
PRO: Get to feel like a Caveman. This is a nonnegotiable pro and I will not accept nor tolerate criticism towards my Unga-Bunga.
It's a great stress reliever to go caveman on something. Especially when that something has been pissing you off.

That Bec de Corbin was really beautiful. It's a true knight's weapon. If you don't know, the French name translates to Crow's Beak and is named so for the curved spike that resembles a beak. That's really the perfected weapon against heavily armoured warriors. In the beginning those hammers would get stuck but over time the angle of the spike was perfected to prevent this and thus was the Bec de Corbin born.

It’s interesting to think of cavemen practicing and training with their wooden clubs, they had the same brains we have now so it’s very likely that they at least formed some simple martial art systems.
We see neolithic cultures in modern times trained with their clubs and spears, and had "systems", so it only makes sense paleolithic cultures did too. And it is cool to think about.
That depends on your definition of caveman though. Are we talking about early humans like Neandertals & Cro Magnon? Or are we talking really early man, like proto-humans like Homo habilis or earlier?

The thing is, before the Neolithic revolution,there wasn't that much fighting between humans to develop a full fetched martial art. Sure there was some fighting and killing,but very few. Because basically there was enough of everything (except food sometimes). But wood,some e and bone was basically all they used,and that's readily available.
So i guess they probably practiced fighting against animals,and used that in the rare case of actual fighting.

@@Wastelandman7000 Basically, either way, you're not using the arm again if you're hit with a blunt mace/hammer unless you have plate, and even then you might still be fucked.
No matter what my preferred weapons if I was thrust into a war situation would be a Handaxe or Bow or Flanged Mace. Because Swords, Daggers, Staffs, and Flails all require too much technical skill.
Staves require too much skill but bows don't? Honestly, staves are pretty easy and simple to use very effectively. You can get fancy, and benefit from the effort, but there's no actual need.
@@zehkiel8018 Staves/Staffs if your fast enough and the enemy isn't wearing any serious head protection. Then yes you don't need much skill and can just brute force it to defeat them. But if they are wearing protective equipment then you need the skill/training to be effective with them. While a Bow yes you need some skill/training but that's mainly for longer range/wind issues. But if the enemy is within 200 feet and there isn't a lot of wind you can at least injure the enemy no matter where you hit even if they are wearing protective equipment depending on type of protection and Arrowhead.

Crossbow would be the easiest ranged option. Funnily enough your regular bowmen were the strongest men on the battlefield due to how powerful the bows were then.
idea for a video Skall: discuss the evolution of Greek swords (kopis, falcata, xiphos). It would be interesting to know how they are related and changed over time. I know you have talked about bronze swords, but the focus of this video would be the temporal evolution of various greek sword styles. I love your historic/archaeology videos, so it's just a thought!

That's quite likely the reason flails ever existed, they lose the ease of use and much of the power of a strike with proper follow through, in exchange for not destroying your own joints.
Gloves seem to do a decent job of reducing the shock, at least in my experience.

I would love to see a video that discusses hand shock in-depth. I think hearing Skall's thoughts on which weapons may have more or less hand shock than others and his expertise on any possible training or technique that may correct or lessen hand shock, etc. If this has already been done I apologize in advance.
Absolutely, it would be interesting to see more discussion of vibrational nodes in swords and other weapons. For example, some thrusting swords are apparently poorly set up for hard cuts due to the distribution of mass and subsequent placement of areas of maximal stiffness, which leads to a lot of hand shock and vibration in the blade (as well as inferior cuts or even damage to the sword, depending on how it's made). I'm sure that there's a lot ot say about non-swords as well.

The point about blunt weapons is.... everything with a weight is a blunt weapon,some more apt than others. That means that we can have many different ways to hit and fight with these weapons. Look at a tonfa,a mace,a sjambok whip,a sap,a nunchaku,a mere,a rattan stick,a weight on a chain. They are all blunts.

@@junichiroyamashita i mean, you say it's a myth, but it's really not. Nunchucks, using the common name because i am, in fact, a commoner, aren't technically a weapon. Looking into the history of them, they are literally just a tool used for threshing. The reason they were used for weapons was because they were avaliable, not because they can do anything particularly good. Much like a hoe, and despiteveing a pretty common weapon, those don't have a particular martial art. Now, They can certainly hit stuff. But, theres a reason so many of the techniques for fighting with nunchucks are centered around making them not hit you. It's because they can hit you. And no matter which way you swing it (well, there are some ways, but not any you would be doing in any circumstance) your not hitting yourself with a stick. Unless the stick breaks and one end bounces off and hits you. Then again, if your hit breaks the stick, I'm willing to bet your opponent isn't in a position to be hitting you. And you've broken your weapon, so getting whacked is the least of your concerns.
Still, that's the basic argument. You can't hit yourself with a stick, you can hit yourself with nunchucks, and to not hit yourself with nunchucks your loosing out on a lot of power from your strikes.

The big thing when training to use blunt weapons is that you have to train yourself to do follow-through differently.
Basically you have to train to not maintain edge alignment thru the target. As you impact, you want edge alignment, but soon as you hit, loosen the wrist to minimize the wrist shock. It takes a while to get muscle memory down for it, but otherwise it's pretty easy to pick up if you have skill with any hafted weapon.

Great summary of the advantages/disadvantages of this type of weapon. Relatively simple in construction but devastating in application. I admit bludgeon type weapons fascinate me. They have a long history stretching back to our pre-history forebears and even in the Great War (1914-1918) soldiers were constructing crude battering clubs for trench raids. I don't own a real Mace, or one of those rubber head SCA/HEMA trainer ones. But I do own a LARP mace that I love. I hate that the guards are useless and you're not allowed to thrust with LARP swords. So I switched to mace and shield.
Depends where is LARP organised, and style of LARP. Here in middle a and eastern europe we have big tradition in HEMA and lot of difgerent kinds of LARPs. I was on battle LARPs in Czech republic where we have steel pommels on swords and sabres and blades was laminated composite with rubber outside. And if you go on living history reconstruction or LARP, there are legit fighting, with blunt swords, axes, maces and spears. Everyone is inspected if he has proper armor and on hardest battles you sign testament in which it is stated that you take responsibility for your eventual death. Hardcore LARPs like this is mainly in Poland, Ukraine, Russia and Bellarusia, but if you want go to some of best LARPs and living history reconstruction battles Czech republic, Slovakia(there I live), Poland and Serbia have best 😎

I'll stick with HEMA for that. Pretty sure armoured fighting with blunt steel isn't LARP anyway. There probably no roleplay for one thing. That's more Armoured Combat League kind of stuff. Rather than a game with elves, demons, orcs and magic.

My main thing with blunt weapons is lack of agility which you mentioned. Also I’m a big fan of archery so my first tactic against someone with a blunt weapon would be to disarm or drop them from a distance but keep some sort of blade or axe handy incase they get close

The war hammer used for most of this video is like a Swiss Army knife. It has a hammer on one side of the hook / pike on the other, a spike on the top, and a mace on the sides.

Off the bat (ha), I can think of at least four advantages bludgeoning weapons have: They're theoretically cheaper, they're easier to obtain, the learning curve is low, and they're theoretically better against higher end armor.
