Gotta agree with Zeus on Hollow Knight. I think people get fooled by the high skill ceiling and Gothic, grey, feudal setting - but Castlevania has all these things and is a much more appropriate comparison.
Even though I enjoyed the small amount of Hollow Knight I did play, I can say that it is nothing like Dark Souls or Bloodborne. The closest thing are the boss fights; but even then almost every video game has a boss fight.
I love HK but it is way more a metroidvania obviously. Only comparison for me is the chance to recover Geo/Souls upon death and that there are boss fights, which metroidvanias already had before Souls. I love Hollow Knight, but like Soulsborne the fan community can be relentless in trying to convince others it’s the best game ever.
I feel like the comparison between Hollow Knight and Dark Souls is drawn from how both present their stories as well as their perceived difficulty (i.e. the death system). They are, however, very different games in terms of mechanics, completely different genres even. Salt and Sactuary is much more akin to a “2D Soulslike” than HK. That being said, Hollow Knight is a better game than SnS by a long shot, and I don’t even mean to take any merit away from the latter, Hollow Knight’s really just that good. Might not be for everyone, but its success speaks to how great and well made it is.

Gonna watch this later today! It will probably motivate me to go back to bloodborne after about a year of not playing. Love your AGDQ runs bro! Good luck out there.
Hollowknight is similar in 3 aspects that's about it. 1. The world building/story telling both focus on forgotten kingdoms stuck in a cyclic conflict between the gods of the land fighting against the very nature of existence, with the story being told through cryptic lines of dialogue and item descriptions. 2.a combat system focused on learning an enemies move set and using evasive tactics to dodge any incoming attacks until the next attack opportunity occurs. 3.the death mechanics are fairly similar in which both you die and leave a stain upon the world which you later go back to and acquire you lost currency through a revitalized level. Also to note both series have vertically inclined world exploration opposed to horizontal, for hollowknight although this could be simply explained as it being a metroidvania. Personally I think hollowknight is in some aspects heavily souls inspired but in others it is no where near soulslike, although for me I started off with the souls series (bloodborne being my first and favorite by far) with little to no 2d experience let alone metroidvania experience yet I thoroughly enjoyed hollowknight and believe it to be one of the best games ever. This is a late comment, but I'm just a newcomer to your channel and just personally resonated with your rant.
1. The lore isn’t part of the gameplay, 2. you could say that about the majority of games, where you control a player from a third person perspective 3. that’s the only thing gameplay thing that is probably explicitly taken from, or that hollow knight was influenced by that was made popular by souls. Otherwise, yes, most people probably understand the vague, superficial elements that you’re referring to when you call it a souls like, but if you’re actually recommending someone a game because they like souls, then that’s not a good recommendation
Wow, I haven't seen you in a while Zeus and that is a stunning improvement from the first time I say you and your glorious mane at AGDQ, congratulations on the progress!
It's a definite metroidvania, what exactly makes it souls like? It's only souls like in a senses of its themes and lore, gameplay wise its a complete metroidvania. Another similar game would be bloodstained ritual of the night, an igavania
@@justrcd The enemies drop currency that is used to upgrade and you drop it on death. It's fair to say it takes inspiration from Souls in it's themes and certain gimmicks of game play. I'd say Souls Lite is probably the perfect way to describe it.
To me, I think a game can be a Souls-game when you can play any way you can think of, explore lore and land, kill boss by any strat, beat the game pure skill even with a naked lv1 character with a wooden club. A bit of roguelike, a bit of rpg, but only for more taste. Now that's a Souls-game.

Zeus, I don't know if you check youtube comments, but I couldn't breath I was laughing so hard at all the eye rolling at Hollow Knight and God of War talk.
Man all that nonsense at the beginning saying a metroidvania style game is fundamentally the same as a souls game because you learn new abilities as you progress that are needed to unlock new things in places you've already been. Spyro the Dragon does that lol not a souls game. I'm not a souls snob by any means. I consider myself a casual soulsborne player but even with that it's obvious there's way more to soulsborne than just challenging gameplay with RPG elements.
Sadly it's just sheepish mentality, since souls became a synonimous of difficulty, that's all they need to go on. I love hk to death and ofc there are elements that end up being alike , but at this point of time, is there any game without influence or likeness to another game?
Even Zelda games have more in common with Bloodborne than Hollow Knight. The main similarity between Hollow Knight and Bloodborne is the manner of storytelling, nothing more nothing less. Difficulty \= genre.
Soulslike games generally have common elements like high difficulty, high-risk combat with hard-hitting enemies, sparse checkpoints, and enemies dropping souls (or some other resource used for upgrading stats and/or weapons that is lost upon death), but the player has one chance to regain the dropped souls if they can reach the place of their death without dying again. That's why Hollow Knight is listed as a "Souls-like" on Steam.
tbh i thing god of war's combat is better because it visually looks better. in bloodborne the combat does feel more efficient, risky and rewarding, but god of war makes you feel like a total badass
Hollow Knight has some souls-like aesthetics, and I think that makes a lot of people think it's a souls-like even though it's one of the best Metroidvanias around. If you don't like metroidvanias, you won't like it. I think the confusion is that the boss fights being hard and the normal enemies being hard is what people think it means to call something a "Soulslike", not the relatively free-roaming exploration, the lore being about 90% hidden, the lack of any pretext of you being the "good guy", or the way different weapon types can completely change how you play the game. Or that fashion is mandatory.
Since it was a huge talking point. I think the reason Hollow Knight reads very Souls is due to the themes and tone. A heavily corrupted world with an enigmatic protagonist whom wakes up with vitually no knowledge or preamble is a very Souls thing to do. That and with the orange curse that posesses creatures I can see how people could say it is souls-like, but moreso in form and not at all in function.
People should seriously lay off asking the same fu king questions and take the hint when he says cut it out. Like being so childish as to threaten to unsubscribe. Like he would care.
end thy existence nice, well I’ll call you out for doing exactly what Zeus mentions in the video, which is just saying “it’s a soulslike” and providing literally no evidence or argument whatsoever :)
@@petekrumb4936 Like yourself you mean? -Practically no introduction to the world -Unclear what or who the protagonist is of what his purpose is -Mysterious, foreign land explored on your own -environmental storytelling -No directions or tasks given by the NPC's -Lore is cryptic and mostly hidden -Level design is interconnected -Open world -literally leaving your currency on the spot you died -starting from the bonfire and going through a shortcut to the boss -giant, entire areas that are missable -focus on combat And so and so on. It's idiotic and superficial to characterize soulslike just in regards to the game mechanics. That is one element among many others that work together that define the soulsborne series.
@@basedneet_n3w0rd3r Currently playing Hollow Knight. I may not call it soulslike but definitely very much inspired by it. What I find hilarious is that the developers (I think?) said that they never played a souls game or weren't inspired by it when it shares so many worldbuilding and story aspects (as you have shown) that I find it very unlikely to be a coincidence.
It’s fun and can be frustrating/tough to learn and navigate. However, it’s got very fleshed out rpg and more specifically Souls elements. I.E co-op or couch co op, tons of weapons, builds, tons of armor sets, npcs, secret areas, vague lore, boss fights. It can feel a little janky and some bosses have crazy hit boxes. But if you like metroidvanias/dark souls SandS is very fun. I personally like hollow knight and souls better, but salt and sanctuary is good.
@@TheInfamousIceman I enjoyed it and yes it has the same gothic setting, same nihilistic view of life, same interconnected level design, same idea that weapons scale with strength/dex etc, same variety of weapons and armour, same quest idea, same vague/opaque story, same fear of losing souls that you've acquired. Where it misses the mark for me is the bosses, they aren't good and arent as hard as metroidvania bosses that dont claim to be soulslike. There's maybe 2 with a mechanic other than 'equip relevant debuff and be ultra aggressive' . I'm not an amazing souls player but there were only 2 or three bosses that caused me to die more than twice. The second half devolves into bad platforming at times that just pissed me off as I don't play platformers. It felt like a 2D souls, in that it was scratching the same itch, and with few games that do that I would recommend it.
I've played a couple souls games through, and Hollow Knight about halfway through. My expectations were very much like yours. It turned out I was right.

I have only ever fought orphan of kos one time, because I killed him first ever try. And I like bragging about it. Ludwig took me 30+ tries though... Currently on my second ever bloodborne playthrough, I love this game
both hollow knight and blasphemous ran into the same issue where they're clearly just particularly challenging and artfully executed 'Vanias, but since everybody's frame of reference for difficulty and "deep lore" these days is Souls they get thrown in the box with anything even remotely souls flavored.
i know no one probly read this but o well, i think bloodborne and god of war are both great games, but in there own right, i dont think you can compare them because they are both different
I can see where people come from when they compare hollow knight to soulslike games, they use very similar worldbuilding and lore tropes, tying most of their lore to items found in game. And both have a "fallen" world long gone atmosphere that put the player in a very similar mindset when played casually.
People compare HK to Souls because it takes things from them like Souls takes from Metroid. They're distant cousins. They're heavy in adventure, high skillcap and obviously the boss fights are the highlights, but that doesn't mean they are even close to the same genre
I could see how people mistake Hollow Knight for a souls-like. The atmosphere and tone are very souls-like, and the methods in which you discover the lore is very souls inspired. However the core gameplay loop is what puts it in the metroidvania category. Kind of like if souls and Castlevania had a child, but the child got 75% of its genes from the Castlevania side
So i just starting viewing your channel this being the first video i have watched. Mixed emotions for god of war obviously, i dont play souls like games because i dont have patients lmao. But i wanna start. My question is how do you feel about god of war, as a god of war game. Not from a souls like point of view

A bit of a shame that this run was a little bit sullied in places by some bitter commentary. Just isn't as nice to hear someone sounding so heated and fed up. I wish people in the comments would realize that he's a human being with emotions and opinions just like anyone else and stop ragging on him though.
Only uses souls elements; drop currency when you die and you spawn at a save place when you die.... So yeah I agree
Yup! And they’re two of my favorite games/series. Played those more than any other games.
Might not be for everyone, but its success speaks to how great and well made it is.
thank you 2 games can be different with style or looks but can share the same concept how story is presented and the damn souls or shade or blood echoes u have to pickup where u die .

To be fair for number 2, in most games you need to learn a bosses attack pattern.

@@justrcd The enemies drop currency that is used to upgrade and you drop it on death.

I'm not a souls snob by any means. I consider myself a casual soulsborne player but even with that it's obvious there's way more to soulsborne than just challenging gameplay with RPG elements.
Seems as though chat was being dicks
Sadly it's just sheepish mentality, since souls became a synonimous of difficulty, that's all they need to go on.
I love hk to death and ofc there are elements that end up being alike , but at this point of time, is there any game without influence or likeness to another game?
Even Zelda games have more in common with Bloodborne than Hollow Knight. The main similarity between Hollow Knight and Bloodborne is the manner of storytelling, nothing more nothing less. Difficulty \= genre.
a lot of people seem to think that because a game has a timing dodge mechanic that's hard to master, its a souls game
Bloodtinge was my first play through, arcane was my second and skill was my third. Lmao.
tbh i thing god of war's combat is better because it visually looks better.
in bloodborne the combat does feel more efficient, risky and rewarding, but god of war makes you feel like a total badass

The technique and fluency.. Well done man
this guy is so awesome hes just happy to be here
never wondered about zeus's nickname... but now I gotta say, it's pretty smart
When you kill dudes in hollow knight you obtain Soul which is probs 80% of the reason people compare them
Lol nope

It's idiotic and superficial to characterize soulslike just in regards to the game mechanics. That is one element among many others that work together that define the soulsborne series.
@@basedneet_n3w0rd3r Currently playing Hollow Knight. I may not call it soulslike but definitely very much inspired by it. What I find hilarious is that the developers (I think?) said that they never played a souls game or weren't inspired by it when it shares so many worldbuilding and story aspects (as you have shown) that I find it very unlikely to be a coincidence.
Hollowknight has currency dropped by enemies, this currency is dropped on death and is used for upgrades. Other than that there is no other crossover.

A virtual driver's Education game would be extremely difficult for Helen Keller,

I can see where people come from when they compare hollow knight to soulslike games, they use very similar worldbuilding and lore tropes, tying most of their lore to items found in game. And both have a "fallen" world long gone atmosphere that put the player in a very similar mindset when played casually.
Fun Run! Thanks for uploading :D
