I've watched this review several times and whilst I can't disagree with much of what you say, you admit you are a little unfair on the dear thing! I recently got a 2015 model after owning a Sprint ST for 7 years and I am absolutely delighted with it! The engine was my main motivation for sticking with Triumph, and with a few mods (MRA screen, Scotoiler) it is a superbly comfortable, sporty, responsive and nimble Sports/Tourer. Knocks the spots of a GS for fun and handling, and leaves most Japanese bikes in the shade when it comes to character (very subjective, I'll admit!) I will be getting some louder pipes next year when the wife has got over the shock of me buying it in the first place! Keep up the good work!
Thank you Nigel... Yes, I was unfair on it. Having ridden the newer model, I think it is my favourite Tiger now, especially after having had the 800 XRT with the pretensions of taking it off road and only doing so once, and that was just for a video, the Tiger Sport makes much more sense... Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Enjoy the ride sir!
Well I have the 2009/2010 model. I will be custom painting it soon. I've changed the exhaust to a blue flame slip on can. Better sound and alot lot lot lighter. Headlight converted to the hid system so actually lights up the road. Done around 37,000 miles on it. Have the tell seat and the giving taller screen. Great commuter and even touring( one person two is a bit tight with original luggage system). The new one is nice but it does not do any thing for me. I do like the bar risers though so may buy them at some point. Oh and upgraded my horn to a denelli sound bomb they call it. I do have a few videos on you tube if you do wish to listen. Its loud 120+DB. It worlKs well.
Good to have you back Sir! Clearly you found the Tiger somewhat mundane which surprised me a little as I found my ("non-"sport") Tiger 1050 a great bike - fast, comfy, stable, practical - a great tourer (hence my vids) but I guess it's down to what you want the bike for - it served my "everyday long distance riding and carrying stuff" purposes. I still miss the ol thing today although there's no doubt my current "everyday long distance riding and carrying stuff" bike is a far superior machine. Any trouble with the gearbox on the Sport? I did find mine very clunky, plus she was tall and heavy - though I know they dropped the height on the "sport" model. Enjoyed your vid as ever, and spotting some familiar local roads...Happy New Year from The Missenden Flyer!
Thank you! It was a very good machine, it just didn't have anything that got me hooked! If I had more than one bike, then it's a very good do all bike. But I'd probably have the 800XC instead as it would be cheaper to live with in the long run. Found the gearbox fine, except that I thought the rear brake lever and gear lever were a bit too close to the bike and had to go all pigeon toed to use them... Odd... Lovely bike, just a bit bland... As because it was tall and semi faired, it didn't feel fast which was a bit boring...
Any Triumph is good with me. Cracking real life review mate. I'm a massive fan of the original Speed Triple, with the proper round headlights. I've had two and loved every second! Cheers mate.
Rob Ash It was awesome! I just don't particularly like the rear end on the original Speed Triples. Will have to see how this year goes with money etc, but hopes are for something else this year!
Rob Ash Maybe... I love her and have used her for all sorts of things, but I miss the power. The Speed or Thunderbird Storm would remedy that, but will see! :-) I probably couldn't bear to leave her.
I had a Speed Triple but changed to the Tiger because Mrs TriumfAnt wanted more comfort as a pillion (fair enough). Loved them both but the Tiger clocks haven't been updated since day one, and it's really starting to show it's age. Now on a 800 XC and it's the best all rounder. No experience with their classic range though, except for a couple of hours on a Bonnie (loved it as well).
+John R I think that I just felt that it was a bit tame. Although I now feel that I was unduly negative as I had just ridden my Thruxton, then the Speed Triple, so that my mind was elsewhere in terms of fun and performance. Also, the roads were greasy so I couldn't fully explore its talent. Therefore I aim to try it again soon, especially after having owned my own Tiger for 4 months now... I feel that I would do it more justice. Thanks for watching!...
That black Thunderbird Storm's the one. Crap, I'm torn between the Thruxton and the Street Triple and now there's a third to consider. Quite a lot of pennies though...
Not a big fan of adventure bikes but I have to say I do like the look and the sound of this one. I can see it would be more suited to a euro tour or something. Have a great new year old boy.
I think you summed it up when you said "Its a unassuming commuter bike". I think as an everyday bike its fairly well rounded. I think as a part of a collection, I could quite happily have one. It has about as much power as my Pan but i reckon its substantially lighter.
It is an excellent bike for getting easily from A to B in comfort and quickly. It just doesn't excite me! If I could have 2 or 3 bikes, a tiger would be one, but probably the 800XC. Maybe the 800 XRx if I could justify the cost when it comes out! But I'm nowhere being able to afford this at the moment! :-)
Not all bikes are for everyone but I do really like the sound of the triples. I do think the Triumph top box looks hideous, same or similar on the Trophy and GT SE (which I'm sorely tempted by, lot of bike for £10k). But it's huge, and that's good for me. Only thing these touring commuters need is a shaft drive (maybe a belt) for lower maintenance. Trophy is a shaftie, but it's also £4.5k more than the Sprint... Enjoyed the review, cheers! Happy New Year sah!!!
All good points! I like the idea of the Sprint GT but I think that I'd get bored with that too as it's lacking a bit of character and is now an older platform... The handling could be improved somewhat... Anyway, Happy New Year! :-)

Thanks for all that excellent info darren phillips ! :-) For some reason I couldn't reply to your comment directly? Thanks for watching and contributing! :-)
Thank You Cap'n My Cap'n! You seemed to be be really trying to like the Tiger Sport, but in the end, we could all tell you just wouldn't be you on it ;-) Can you tell me a bit about the ABS? Your overlay text stated it was "switchable"...what's that all about, eh? Your thoughts on ABS in general? Cheerio! P.S.: I spotted the ignition switch re-locate gauge mount on the Thruxton at the very end...but no ignition switch. Is this something we'll be seeing shortly?
Good evening! Having just read the manual, the way I understand the switchable ABS is that you can turn it off. However, it will reset to on again when you turn the ignition off and back to on. My feelings on ABS as I don't do much off roading is that you shouldn't need it, but it's there when you do, such as locking up the front wheel... I don't think it would be noticeable or intrude on my day to day riding but it *could* save me in dodgy situations, maybe where there is diesel or ice... So if you don't have ABS, don't go out to get it, but if you have it, cool! With regards to the gauge bracket I have, I got it as it lowers the angle of the gauge bracket and neatens the profile. However, when it came to trying to feed the ignition barrel there, it was too right behind with wires to I gave up and also came to the conclusion that people might struggle to find my ignition barrel if it stayed on the forks...
Ooeer! That Thunderbird sounded nice :) And I'm not into cruisers but I would choose that over a black speed triple :O I get the same wind noise on my 125! But that only has a piddly small screen! Do you use normal ear plugs or the one's moulded to your ears? Happy New Year :D
I really like the Tigers but i would take off the topbox and put on panniers as I think it looks better IMO. I would choose the thunderbird as it doesn't look like a hooligan bike but its crazy side is just under the skin of the bike which really appeals to me. RS
Hmmm well we came to very similar conclusions I think on this bike sir. It didn't feel quick to me (800 seemed to accelerate faster) but when you looked at the clock the speed was up there. The wind from the screen - yes I also would prefer a naked bike. I tried a taller screen on the 500X and it just put all the turbulence on my head. And yes, it just has no ... rambunction? rambunctiousness? I had a few people who actually own one comment on my test ride in strong support of the bike so, as always, it's a lot to do with personal taste etc. and that is the way you conducted the review, well done sir!! RSM8.
Thank you Captain. Yes, it is all down to personal preference. It's not for me but it is still an excellent bike. Although I am rather biased towards Triumph although I probably shouldn't be! You could put an arrow on it which might lean towards rambunctiousness, but it is too easy to ride... I like to put in some effort! :-) If I got the Thunderbird Storm, I'd be relishing the chance to try to keep up with my mates on their Street Triples with me hanging off the side like a gibbon! :-)
Great review Captain! Seems like it's a bike to get you to the destination no problem, but does not offer the enjoyment of getting there. I'll take the Thunderbird!
I'm afraid I have to agree with you on the Tiger Sport 1050 Captain, a bit boring, now the Triumph Thunderbird Storm with the short pipes, oh yes please! I mean that bikes worth buying for the name alone, lol, Good video buddy, RSM8.
I’m afraid it was too long ago now for me to remember… I’ve had a good look at the video but it’s blurry where one would normally be on a Triumph… I’ll look up some photos…
@@CaptainRambunctious Ok mate cheers, I think it was the rev counter which was at 3 when you were pulling in. Im easily confused lol. Thanks for the reply
It's funny actually, that one says "let's SEE what it SOUNDS like!" And I agree, it's a well built bike, Works fine, wonderful engine...but...so discrete! And we don't like that, now do we! We want something that matches our own personality, reflects who we are, making the Picture complete. I like the sound of that! God, I miss riding the bike!
Hi can I ask please what is that top box you’ve got on your bike as I’m buying a tiger 1050 2009 and it comes with 2 side panniers but no top box. I’ve done loads of searches and I have no idea what to type in that bolts on. Now my old 955i it was easy to look up and purchase
That would be the original triumph top box. I believe that you need to purchase a top box slider to bolt on to the bike and the top box goes on that. The later Tigers had top boxes that were givi top boxes with Triumph branding. I’m not sure if this is the case with these though. Your best bet is to ask your local triumph dealer…
I've said in later videos and reviews that this wasn't my best review at all. I was unfair in my criticism of the bike and as it was winter on greasy roads I didn't feel comfortable or confident enough to probe it's performance capabilities. I mention this in the later review of the newer Tiger Sport. So much so I am thinking of pulling this review as I now believe it to be misleading to the viewers... Thanks for your frank assessments, watching the video and taking the time to comment. TBH!.
Thanks Captain for your reply. I think people rate this bike unfairly.. I have the standard (non sport, it's the SE with antilock brakes) and people don't know how good it is. So when I see reviews and they don't give it "the beans" (as you Brits are fond of saying) or throw it into turns and experience how flickable a bike that you can tour on is.. it pisses me off. On one pro review for ADV bikes they always do a dirt review part and say this bike sucks (which it does, not made for the dirt) then made a comment this bike is the fastest and most fun on the street, then they don't bother to mention that's where these bikes spend 95% of their time. I recently remapped the bike with free software and it's now crazy fast and purrs like, well, a kitten (tiger, get it? nevermind). The bike comes a little lean from the factory and is only exacerbated by adding free flowing exhaust - It's now running perfect, really smooth throttle response. It's got so much useable low end power I have to be careful with traction. I can see why they are putting traction control on bikes these days, it's one electronic aid I think is really necessary. I really like the Tiger Sport. If I didn't already have a Tiger, I would get one, put on a pipe, open up the airbox and remap the ECU and you'd have a really badass machine. Loving that single sided swingarm.
yes, they are great. I rode this actual model again in the summer and loved it. I love the newer one even more! Thanks again, and not to worry! You are right to be biased about your pride and joy... It's what matters! :-)
what bike bike do you prefer? Please dont say the StORM. My Lord there is no comparison. The only negative I cane think of is the small front 17 inch wheel and no cruise control. You mentioned no torque? are you kidding me., wheelies in both second and first with no clutch, NO COMPARISON The Tiger is the best value out there. Yeah the Mulitistrada is bt far rhe superior bike for 10k more dollars too!
This is one bike I am keen to ride again and review again as I feel that I wasn't fair to it. For some reason I felt that it was bland. I have since spent a lot more time on Speed Triple and my Tiger 800 so I should definitely be able to tell big differences. Now, power wise, I didn't seem to get it to wheelie at all? Maybe it was the road conditions which were damp and slippery in January which stopped me from fully exploring the power? I realise that on paper this should be a brilliant bike. I just felt it didn't have any character. I'm willing to give it another go! The thing is that it's all down to personal pretences. At the time I still had my Thruxton and so compared all bikes to that. Now I have a Tiger myself, so I should really be able to feel the bigger 1050 engine... Anyway, watch this space...
blackhat400 You misunderstand my reasoning. Of course the Tiger has better performance and handling that the Thruxton, but for me, it's about how much effort you need to put in to get the bike to do what you do. I find the better Tiger too easy and therefore don't feel much reward, therefore it didn't feel like much of an event for me, as it was so easy. That just means it's a good bike but not for me... Does that make sense?
blackhat400 None taken! :-) Because I vlog as well, it is easy for me to forget that people watch these videos as standalone vids and so don't necessarily understand where I am coming from when I am reviewing... Thanks for watching...
This guy should change his name to Captain Clueless. I've had twins, fours, KTM's, Honda's, a BMW, and the triple is the best motor. Pulls from 2K and revs to 10K. No torque? What?
Ur crazy. that motor is better than any v. twin made. vstrom is garbage. ducati is garbage. bmw is garbage. admit the triple is the best motor made. easy to work on too. I also have a streetglide. it's a legal minibike 80 hp. woooooo

+Captain Rambunctious no the 800 is a dog. forget wheelies. get a 1050. better than the 1200 shaft garbage. U see race bikes with shafts? uh no
Isn"t much of an event you say . and you ride a thruxton, tiger is 3x quicker,
I"v ridden both,
blackhat400 You misunderstand my reasoning.
Captain Rambunctious I see what you mean , its just some of your comments can put people off the tiger, and there a great bike, no offence meant,
blackhat400 None taken!
No torque? What?
Please see my reply to your other comment.
Thank you for watching and for your frankness.
Captain, I'm sorry for my comment, I was a bit hasty and I retract it.
holden caulfied no need to retract it! We are all allowed opinions! My channel isn't a nanny state you know.... 😉
the boxer sounds like it's gonna explode at 5k rpm. Wtf to people see in bmw besides motor longevity? everything else is plastic junk on their bikes
Ur crazy. that motor is better than any v. twin made. vstrom is garbage. ducati is garbage. bmw is garbage. admit the triple is the best motor made. easy to work on too. I also have a streetglide. it's a legal minibike 80 hp. woooooo
