Pioneering My Alaska | A Homestead Documentary | Part 1

  • My name,
    Ty
At 29 years old I have realized my purpose in this world. My desire for Adventure, Independence, and Freedom. To rely on my own skills and determination, to grow, provide and hunt for the sustenance I need to survive.
I have spent my life in the Phoenix Metropolitan area where summer temperatures can reach 115°F. With a background in the trades and a good work ethic, I'm trading in the extreme heat for extreme cold, and a life surrounded by modern technology to a life more connected with the natural world.
This documentary is the prologue of this new life I am building for myself.
“There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep Sea, and music in its roar:
I love not Man the less, but Nature more,
From these our interviews, in which I steal
From all I may be, or have been before,
To mingle with the Universe, and feel
What I can ne’er express, yet cannot all conceal”
    -Lord Byron
    (Edit):
Because many have asked for more information.
    History-
This is my land, 7 acres on a salmon creek. I found an online listing in December of 2022. Purchased in January 2023. I had never even set foot in Alaska before. I had been to Northern Montana earlier that summer of 2022 and I knew I had to move north. Where? I didn't quite know yet. I spent many many hours searching for land in northern Montana, Idaho, and Alaska. When I found this land for sale, something inside me knew it was gold. I wasn't able to step foot on the property until July 2023, a very wet year, and the mosquitos were at their worst. Spent the day walking around with my rain gear on and net over my head, in complete awe of the wildness and beauty. I was pleased to find that the majority of the land was 10 feet above the creek and I couldn't find anywhere that wasn't draining water. I spent some time walking in the creek and had a king salmon swim between my legs. I knew at that moment I had made a great choice following my intuition. I have no experience in homesteading or living off grid, but thanks to my amazing family who have taught me how to think through problems, learn quickly, and work hard; I know I can accomplish my goals and live the life I dream of living.
    Future Plans-
I am currently back in the desert of Arizona. I have some things I need to attend to here, such as finishing the remodel on my house. I may not be a very frequent poster of videos until I can be up there full time.
I am planning on my next trip which will be a form of cutting in a snow machine trail(for hauling in building material over winter), building a bridge over the creek, and pulling stumps and compacting the dirt in the area I plan to build my cabin.
The trip after that will be a mid-winter material hauling trip.
And then finally I plan to sell my house in Arizona and make the final move to Alaska to build and stay for good.
I hope to have all this done and start building by spring/summer of 2026.

    Hello from Maine.
I've been dropping trees for over 40 years. You did great, but I have one piece of advice. Before cutting the tree, spend one minute cutting all the brush and foot-tangle around the tree. Watching you hammer your wedges and at the same time you're fighting that brush having to swing your axe through it. It just makes life a little easier on you as well as safer in the long run.
Hell, if I were you, I'd take your weed wacker/brush cutter and just trim around every tree you plan to drop.
Good luck up there, be safe.

I call this good advice. Certainly while alone. With an unstable tree and a running chainsaw you need scramble-away room! Trees are much bigger here way down south, but they can do weird and unexpected things while falling.

More importantly, you need to clear a retreat path incase shit goes sideways. Always clear a path for safeties sake when felling all trees 🎄

Really enjoyed your video. As soon as I thought “I’d do this or that” you would soon do that exact thing. Cleaning up the area not only looks neat it is a type of forest fire safety. Plus with lots of bears in the area it gives you clear sight. Great job. Waiting patiently for your next video.

My friend, the next time you buy a couple new loops of chain for that Husqvarna, buy a couple loops of 3/8, semi skip, full chisel chain. I'm coming from an old man who made his living cutting timber in Washington State, the best advice I could give you, would be to watch "buckin Billy Ray Smith's"how to sharpen chain. Pay close attention to the rakers and the gullet. Your life will be much easier my friend. You are living my dream. Good luck to you.

When making fire here in Alaska always remember the fire can get into the root system and travel through it.. signs of smoke coming up from locations away from burn area are a indicator...great to see your dousing and shoveling burn pit. save as much wood as you can for winter, reminds me of when i came here almost 40 years ago, grew up in Tucson , enjoy your journey..

I think what you are doing is great. Just a word about the creek line. If you cut back to many trees on the side of the creek you will make it weak. The roots of those trees hold up your land. I am not trying you tell you what to do. Make a homestead without changing to much of the landscape is all. Don't change how the creek runs. For your fishin sakes lol

Dude! Oh yes follow your dream 4sure! Play safe, no long winter stays until you are dried in tight with a good stove and a lot of wood, like more than u think. I've seen everyone even harvest trees way further away so you will have more emergency ones closer to you each winter. Determination and grit is awesome; water, shelter, heat, food. Maybe put in large stone stairs to go out to middle of the river, in winter, to get your water. Who knows you may find a natural spring to connect to your house. 😊 hope to see you soon, thanks!!

I would separate the brush and twigs from logs, roughly anything thicker 3 to 4 cut to a length about 30 inches, stack them at the edge of where you clearing in between two trees. Stack up around 3.5 feet. It would make a good fence and be storage for fire wood.

Good luck to you! Looks like its going to be quite the adventure. Just a tip for your packraft -- the "pointy" end is your bow, the broad end your stern. you'll find it to be much easier to paddle, less resistance. Also, flip your paddle around. You have the wider side of the asymmetrical blade entering the water first- this is incorrect. the shorter side of the paddle should enter the water first-better displacement. Trust me, You'll notice a difference. ..was wondering why you didn't just buck up the logs in your burn pile and season them for future use when you return? were they punky/ rotten? anyway, very jealous- great courage and love the work ethic! you're doing what so many of us only dream of

    • @FishinFishCreek
      @FishinFishCreek  วันที่ผ่านมา

Thanks for your tip on the paddle orientation. The packraft on the other hand is designed to be paddled this way. It's a two person raft and I removed the rear seat which can only be placed right up against the pointy end (where the storage zipper is) making that end the stern. Seems weird I know. It's made by alpacka if you want to look it up.

I promise I will not be a jerk towards your videos. I taught living in the woods probably around the time you were born. My comment is simple. If you have a natural food source on your property, why destroy it ? Fruit , of all kind should be used and transplanted on the property.

    • @FishinFishCreek
      @FishinFishCreek  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +59

Well, that's a very good question. My answer to your question is that all this area I was clearing is the area I plan to have my immediate "yard" give or take about 1 of the 7 acres I have available. That is reason number 1. Reason 2 is that the 2+ mile trail from the river to the creek has an absurd, nearly endless supply of berry bushes. If I'm not mistaken there are 6 different kinds. And my final reasoning for destroying the natural food supply in this specific area is that there are many more patches of these berries all over the place. There is virtually nobody else out there. So all I have to do is find the next patch.
I really do appreciate your question, I hope you find my reasonings worthy. And of course, I appreciate your support.
In my next video I will attempt to be better at explaining the things I'm doing and why I'm doing them. I'm still trying to be comfortable in front of the camera.

What a great spot you have there, love the commitment and the energy to take on the project. Great first 12days of work and your archived a lot in the short time, are you planing a cabin of a tent? Get a good base set you early makes it a lot more comfortable to tackle the whole project

Really a nice adventure and a great video. I liked your A-frame shed except for one thing. I think you should have scrapped a shallow trench and filled it with creek stone beneath the bottom logs to kep them from rotting.

    • @FishinFishCreek
      @FishinFishCreek  วันที่ผ่านมา +2

I was thinking about burning the logs that touch the ground (Shou Sugi Ban) but with the little amount of time I had and knowing that a proper tool shed will be built before they rot I just decided to get them up and not spend the time on this trip making sure everything was perfect. For more permanent structures in the future, I will most definitely take time to make sure everything is designed for the 'long haul'.
Thanks for the comment and the time you spent watching.
      Best regards.

Wow! What a change in scenery from Arizona to Alaska!! Can't wait to see how your homestead develops over the coming months and years. Are you planning on buying more property (beyond the 7 acres) after the sale of your home in Phoenix? Stay safe, stay warm and post when you can. All the best!! (from Ontario Canada!!) 👍😎👍

Money from selling the home in Phoenix will go towards buying building materials, snow machine, Argo, and a boat. Hope to have a little extra leftover after all that.

Thanks for the reply. Looking forward to more of your adventure. When making a face look at which that tree is leaning. Even if ever so slightly. Make your face aiming it in that direction. Then your back cut. As you get better with this you can take that piece you cut out and wedge it in a way to make the tree move to the left or right. I have confidence that you will get better in the felling of trees. I did subscribe. Have fun, be safe.

Just seeing creek you're on makes me think of a couple of opportunities you have. First, power generation by a water wheel. Secondly, creating a deeper pool for a more consistent water source.

So watching you burn through gas. Got me thinking you could consider a battery powered chainsaw and solar charging system. You could use the gas powered saw on big logs and battery powered for limbing/notching, etc. I watched another TH-camr do just that.

Those 3 point brush cutting blades work a lot better if you use a chainsaw file to add serrations to the cutting edge that wrap around the points. Just make sure to remove an equal amount of metal from each blade so it stays balanced.
