Hi from Dave S in North Pole, Alaska. I carefully watched your video and would like to congratulate you on your hard work. I am guessing you are in your mid twenties, about the age I was when I moved to northern Alaska 51 years ago. I lived near the Brooks Range above the Arctic Circle for many years and built a couple of log cabins on my trapline. I think I am familiar with building a place from scratch and I know the joy of the wilderness because I guided river and backpack trips in what is now Gates of the Arctic National Park. I have lived your dream and can assure you it is worth it. Unfortunately, I can also assure you that bears, especially grizzlies will have no problem tearing into your shelter and spreading your gear across the countryside. I wish it were not so, but except for a miracle of God it will surely happen. I have had them tear the wall off a trapline cabin just to see what is inside. That being said, yours is a worthwhile quest though with many challenges, especially if you plan on wintering there. I wish you well and hope you continue to keep an accurate journal as I have for over 50 years. I am using them to help me as I write a book about my half century in Northern Alaska and plan to have it published this fall. Be safe and enjoy the ride!
@@alaskatrac Thank you Dave, I'm envious of your life, I too wish one day I could live in or around the gates of the artic. I'm certain a bear has already torn my stuff to shreds, but that's okay. I halfway expected that to happen. Thank you for your time, and I would absolutely buy a copy of your book when you release it. I won't be wintering until I can get a proper cabin built. In the description of the video I give more information as I kind of suck at remembering to talk on camera. But again, thank you for watching and commenting, I'm very excited to read your book!
So happy to have found your channel. Lived and worked in Alaska and miss it everyday. You’re living the dream and looking forward to following along. Hold on because your channel is going to BLOW up!!
Just watched this and I’m really impressed with what you’ve started out there! That A-frame is badass man, inspired me to do something similar on my property. Thanks for watching my first video, you have a new subscriber with me! Good luck, brother
When making fire here in Alaska always remember the fire can get into the root system and travel through it.. signs of smoke coming up from locations away from burn area are a indicator...great to see your dousing and shoveling burn pit. save as much wood as you can for winter, reminds me of when i came here almost 40 years ago, grew up in Tucson , enjoy your journey..
The music and videography got me mate. You have a unique style that stands out amongst a somewhat saturated genre. Keep being you. Best of luck from Aotearoa New Zealand
What an adventure you have started here, Boyo. Can't wait to see where it takes you. Never been happier to subscribe before. The music, the editing and the wise words shared. Just well done.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, poems, music. And all the hard work! Such a delight watching this video! It is my dream to live in nature like this. Might not make it this lifetime, I'm 78, but who knows? Dreams are good for the soul! As is the hard work to achieve them! So satisfying!
My friend, the next time you buy a couple new loops of chain for that Husqvarna, buy a couple loops of 3/8, semi skip, full chisel chain. I'm coming from an old man who made his living cutting timber in Washington State, the best advice I could give you, would be to watch "buckin Billy Ray Smith's"how to sharpen chain. Pay close attention to the rakers and the gullet. Your life will be much easier my friend. You are living my dream. Good luck to you.
I’ve watched probably hundreds of off grid channels and this is the first one that I’ve immediately fallen in love with. I found myself a little choked up when you had to leave. I’m looking forward to many, many more videos. It was fun to see you come out of your shell a little bit! Best of luck to you! 🍀
Thank you Sarah, you can definitely see from day to day I was getting more comfortable in front of the camera. I still have a long way to go, but I'm enjoying all of it. Especially the moments when all the cameras are put away, it's a magical place to experience and you're right at the end, I was very sad to leave.
Hello from Maine. I've been dropping trees for over 40 years. You did great, but I have one piece of advice. Before cutting the tree, spend one minute cutting all the brush and foot-tangle around the tree. Watching you hammer your wedges and at the same time you're fighting that brush having to swing your axe through it. It just makes life a little easier on you as well as safer in the long run. Hell, if I were you, I'd take your weed wacker/brush cutter and just trim around every tree you plan to drop. Good luck up there, be safe.
I call this good advice. Certainly while alone. With an unstable tree and a running chainsaw you need scramble-away room! Trees are much bigger here way down south, but they can do weird and unexpected things while falling.
Your documentary was so well done! Really shows the process and love the music and poetry. Thank you for sharing! Looking forward to more and good luck with your adventures ❤❤❤
Ty, I am so glad you made it to my feed. Just finished the whole video, and I want more. Absolutely loved everything about it, music, cinematic beautiful. Thank you for taking me with you, can't wait to see what happens next!!

This is one of the best videos I have seen. Great work, Dave. I went yo Alaska when I was 23 and left 10 year's later. I was in a bad situation and decided to leave. To this day i regret leaving. I still have the desire and need for solitude. Follow😮 your desires, Dave. Even when accomplishments are small the rewards are great.
Really enjoyed your video. As soon as I thought “I’d do this or that” you would soon do that exact thing. Cleaning up the area not only looks neat it is a type of forest fire safety. Plus with lots of bears in the area it gives you clear sight. Great job. Waiting patiently for your next video.

I would separate the brush and twigs from logs, roughly anything thicker 3 to 4 cut to a length about 30 inches, stack them at the edge of where you clearing in between two trees. Stack up around 3.5 feet. It would make a good fence and be storage for fire wood.

Good job young man ! Quick easy shelter so you can focus on the bigger projects at hand :) Great drone shots Alaska is beautiful, Wish i had a nice creek out my front door like that :) Pioneering off grid I do it here in Alberta too :)
I can not believe what u have accomplished in such as short time Its amazing I like your structure I know u want it foe tool shed but its good for a temporary shelter. Enjoyed your video very much Keep u p the good work all the best take care
Absolutely amazing Ty! Looking forward to part 2. Alaska is one of the most beautiful places there is. What an incredible experience that must've been!
Good luck to you! Looks like its going to be quite the adventure. Just a tip for your packraft -- the "pointy" end is your bow, the broad end your stern. you'll find it to be much easier to paddle, less resistance. Also, flip your paddle around. You have the wider side of the asymmetrical blade entering the water first- this is incorrect. the shorter side of the paddle should enter the water first-better displacement. Trust me, You'll notice a difference. ..was wondering why you didn't just buck up the logs in your burn pile and season them for future use when you return? were they punky/ rotten? anyway, very jealous- great courage and love the work ethic! you're doing what so many of us only dream of
Thanks for your tip on the paddle orientation. The packraft on the other hand is designed to be paddled this way. It's a two person raft and I removed the rear seat which can only be placed right up against the pointy end (where the storage zipper is) making that end the stern. Seems weird I know. It's made by alpacka if you want to look it up.
Just seeing creek you're on makes me think of a couple of opportunities you have. First, power generation by a water wheel. Secondly, creating a deeper pool for a more consistent water source.
I'd keep all the wood that is cut. Your gonna need fire wood. If ur gonna stay during winter. Might want to get building a more stable shelter than the tent. Worry bout cleaning trails till ya get a small structure. Anywhoo! I wish u luck. Be safe.
Glad i stumbled into your channel, how often will you be uploading. I love watching your progress so far. Just want to know when to keep an eye out for the next one.
I think what you are doing is great. Just a word about the creek line. If you cut back to many trees on the side of the creek you will make it weak. The roots of those trees hold up your land. I am not trying you tell you what to do. Make a homestead without changing to much of the landscape is all. Don't change how the creek runs. For your fishin sakes lol
Dude! Oh yes follow your dream 4sure! Play safe, no long winter stays until you are dried in tight with a good stove and a lot of wood, like more than u think. I've seen everyone even harvest trees way further away so you will have more emergency ones closer to you each winter. Determination and grit is awesome; water, shelter, heat, food. Maybe put in large stone stairs to go out to middle of the river, in winter, to get your water. Who knows you may find a natural spring to connect to your house. 😊 hope to see you soon, thanks!!
Love watching this type of content it's inspiring to see that there's more to life than just living in the normal lane so live it you're way. From surviving to thriving is it's own reward 💪🔧🍀🙏👌

Hiya Ty, I loved the video, less talk, and more action is quite intriguing. Your work ethic is definitely to be admired....by myself...while snuggled all nice and cosy in my chair... watching you grafting away like a goodun(England slang). Absolutely amazing Ty! Looking forward to part 2. Alaska is one of the most beautiful places there is. What an incredible experience that must've been!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Cheers for this from england lookin forward to the next one good luck bro
Love it, thx for sharing, can't wait for more ✌️
Subbed and can’t wait to see more videos! 🤙🏻🇨🇦
awesome video bro i definetly sub ,,cant wait to see what ur plans are ,, enjoy the wilderness, such a beautiful place
Really enjoyed watching! Thanks for sharing.
Nice video mate can’t wait to watch your videos
Will it be a new video every week of what’s your schedule?
Can’t wait for part2 🙌🏽
Just seeing creek you're on makes me think of a couple of opportunities you have. First, power generation by a water wheel. Secondly, creating a deeper pool for a more consistent water source.
Watching this on your Day 36... Cannot wait to see where you have taken it to this day!
For the next year or two, uploads will not be very often. Once I'm living up there, I will upload on a more regular basis.
@@LifeonFishCreek I figured it wasn't going to be super often...probably a video for each trip up. Will be fun to watch.
I appreciate it man, thank you!
Just found your channel brother and looking forward to seeing more, can't wait to see what you are going to do with the property

I like your Buck knife. I have the same knife and I’ve had it all my life. One time the locking mechanism broke and Buck sent me a brand new knife. I’ve had that knife for over 40 years.
Awesome video, thank YT for the algorithms:) Looking forward to the next video 💯
I appreciate you don't use harsh profanity! I share vids like this with my little grandsons. Always teaching them about this lifestyle.
0:17 Subscribed.. Man with your music choice, I had to subscribe😊. "Monsters and Men" how cool to use their music please more of them in your future videos. You really did a lot of hard work in such a short time. 💪 Your footage and editing is already awesome. Grtz from Thailand
Great first episode, looking forward to following your time at Fish Creek from the UK.
Hiya Ty, I loved the video, less talk, and more action is quite intriguing. Your work ethic is definitely to be admired....by myself...while snuggled all nice and cosy in my chair... watching you grafting away like a goodun(England slang).
That moose head should take pride of place above your cabin door.
Anyways you've now got another subscriber all the way from the UK.
