    Just wanted to make one correction: the local dialect is still Cantonese and the signs are in Chinese (since the dialects only refer to the spoken language)

      @StamfordBridge 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thank you. She said that the locals are from Hong Kong and environs, and then said the “signs are in Mandarin, the local dialect.” It confused me on two levels.

    Great video! Most chinatown tour videos on yt are poorly made, this was straight to the point and professional! In my opinion the best soup dumplings in nyc are in Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao in the Queens chinatown which is now the biggest chinatown in nyc followed by Sunset Park.

    That’s a lotus root. Peel it and slice it in rounds( thin). We call them wagon wheels. Stir fry them in sesame oil and then add a few Tbl spoons soy sauce & a sprinkle of sugar. Then sprinkle with sesame seeds. That’s how I ate them in Japan. I love the crunchy texture.

    Great video, loved the comprehensive tour of my old neighborhood! Just only one hangup...
    2:44 the street signs are written in traditional Chinese script, not Mandarin. You can read and dicate those same characters in Mandarin, Cantonese and other dialects in their unique pronunciations, and while each dialect has its own unique words/phrases/syntax, the characters you see in the video are not exclusive to any particular variety of Chinese. Hope this helps!

    • @d.g.4499
      @d.g.4499 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a question, let's say the sign is for a shoe store. Wouldn't the characters be different depending on the dialect? So is it possible that that the characters are corresponding to the Mandarin dialect or does it just depend on the dialect of the business owner, etc.

    • @Tokai134
      @Tokai134 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@d.g.4499 All Chinese dialects utilize the same pool of Chinese characters, but some characters are only used by certain dialects. While dialects may be transcribed into written Chinese, in modern age there is only one form of official written Chinese (written vernacular Chinese). In sum: Some dialects/spoken Chinese (e.g. Cantonese) use particular Chinese characters if they were to be transcribed into writing. But written Cantonese is not considered official written Chinese - even in movies the captions would be written vernacular Chinese. Mandarin is considered to be the official spoken Chinese and happens to be able to be rendered with written Chinese, but written Chinese does not derive from Mandarin. The spoken Chinese back in, for example, Ming Dynasty used the same form of written Chinese, but sounded very differently than Mandarin.
