NJ Manager Argues Call with MLB Umpire Alan Porter During Little League World Series

  • As part of MLB's annual Little League Classic in Williamsport, a big league umpire works a Little League World Series game earlier in the day. www.closecalls...
    Alan Porter officiated a few innings of Sunday afternoon's New Jersey-Hawaii game, following in the footsteps of Gerry Davis and Chris Guccione, who worked the LLWS in previous years.
    Porter had an eventful second inning, including a safe (pulled foot) call and a brief visit from New Jersey manager Jairo Labrador, whose questioning of a runner's position on second base may very well have been less of an argument and more of a chance to converse (or get some camera time with) a major leaguer.

    Don’t know that I’d call that an “argument”. He asked a question.

      It was argumentative the major league umpire knows where every one should be

    Why is he at second base? Because your team threw the ball all over the place...

    I think this is one of the better events MLB has come up with. If you watch all the coverage from when the players arrive in Williamsport and the interactions with the the kids and the mlb players thru the day and into the game at night you almost forget who the kids are and who the mlb players are. It awesome that the umpires are getting involved and jumping on a game as well. It’s a thrill for the kids and the other umpires to have an mlb umpire on the field. I can bet they didn’t have to ask Allan Porter twice if he wanted to do this!

    Giving back to the kids, love it. Love to see it. He’s out there working as hard for them as he is for the big leaguers. I will say, that speed must be glacial slow for them and calls should come clearer and slower at this level. If it was MLB, the defensive coach would have been out arguing for interference since the kid did reach out and touch/grab the fielder lol. You can tell he’s having fun cuz putting the hand on a shoulder is a major no no really starting at the HS varsity level. Glad to see them giving back and I’m sure the coaches were maybe more in awe then the players lol. Great stuff.

    Imagine if Joe West had been umpiring the game & that coach had gone belly-to-belly with him. They'd still be so far from each other they'd have to shout to be heard.

    I love it when the runner on second took his helmet off after Porter squished his head around.
    That's just like my dog! You give him a pat pat on the head and then he does complete shake out like "why the heck did you even touch me human?"

    He did not argue a call. Just asked for clarification. Being a coach, you do not see everything, and being he was out there anyway, why not ask. Otherwise coaches often ask between innings.

    Why in the world would they disgrace the level of a major league umpire by having him officiate little league?!

    • @nateward9592
      @nateward9592 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Denzell Lewis if you read the description, it’s part of the little
      League week festivities. This is the third game they’ve done it. Part of the fun is a MLB umpire going out and umpiring for the kids. They give back. Veterans Gerry Davis and Chris Guccione did it the last two years.

    • @URAWESOME94
      @URAWESOME94 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nateward9592 I'm aware Chris and Gerry did it, but it is a disgrace. If MLB wants to do that, send more than just the umpire. Send a manager down. In fact, send a manager and make him umpire. Send a player and make him umpire. Dont send the actual umpire down alone to officiate little league. That's an insult.

    • @emberlily7
      @emberlily7 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@URAWESOME94 strongly disagree. As an umpire who holds MLB umps in very high regard I find it very inspiring to see the big dogs volunteer their time for the occasional LL event. But I agree it'd be cool to see a majors manager thrown into the mix too, but not as an official.

    • @Caderic
      @Caderic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@URAWESOME94 How is that a disgrace? He looked like he was having a lot of fun, and most guy at the Pro level (coaches, player and umps the same) LOVE the opportunity to do things like this. It reminds them of why they do what they do, and where they got the passion for the sport.
      I think you need a dictionary so maybe next time you won't use the wrong word.

    • @URAWESOME94
      @URAWESOME94 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Erikk Friberg the word hasn’t been used incorrectly. You’ve just inserted your opinion, that doesn’t nullify what I’ve said. You assert that most would love to do something like this, where are they? They’re all getting millions to play the sport that yes, starts right here as a youngling. It is a disgrace because MLB sends an umpire who’s worked years to get even the slightest chance to be at that level down to a level of play any amateur ump making $15 a game sees. That’s the disgrace. Want to make it fun? Trying to help the kids? There’s already umps care and blue tickets for that. If you’re really trying to make it a fun experience as I said, force a manager or player down there to umpire. Let them see how actually difficult it is. Don’t send someone who’s worked forever to be with the pros to seriously babysit and officiate a game with a bunch of kids.
