- When HP Umpire Jaylen Goodman ejected Jersey Shore BlueClaws manager Greg Brodzinski for arguing a fair ball call vs Wilmington, he exemplified patience by allowing the aggrieved skipper time to make his point, then firmly warned, and ejected, when it was time to move on. The ordinarily-calling umpire on the fair/foul call down the right field line, 1B Umpire Warren Eubanks did not see where a line drive hit over his head landed. After making no call, he pivoted toward second base to take the batter-runner (it's a two-person crew in this High-A game), while HP Umpire Goodman reportedly signaled fair so that someone from the crew had a call on that play.
Brodzinski argued afterward and, after a lengthy discussion, was warned and ultimately ejected by Goodman. As the non-ejecting umpire, Eubanks stood to the side until the ejection occurred and it was time to escort Brodzinski off the field, but did so in a way where he allowed Brodzinski to speak while making his way back to the dugout.

I don’t understand how anyone thought that was a foul ball. It didn’t have the sound effect.
Here's a tip I hear from Little League coaches that the defensive team should learn from: always treat fair/foul as fair until an umpire calls foul.

If the ball was fair, the runner was going to get two bases regardless of how the right fielder played the ball. My problem is with the umpire down the line. He was in no position to make a call on the line. Umpire needs to have an angle to make the call. Umpire should have moved to the foul territory prior to the pitch.

@@billbuffington3037 it's a 2 umpire system, they did all they could, because he has to take BR to 2B on the trouble ball. This is just a tough call in a 2 umpire system. Right foot beside the line is the proper positioning for P2 though.

Again great umpiring. They didn't yell back stare down. The ejection umpire walked away respectfully and the field umpire blocked properly. Great work!!

0:32 This is how I wound up ringing a kid up on strike one. The batter before him had two quick strikes, then proceeded to foul off a bunch and work to a 3-2 count. The at bat was at least 15 pitches, the vast majority of which I was calling out so-and-so balls and "...two strikes!" So by the time the kid worked a walk, I had been saying "two strikes!" for so long that it just got in my head. Next kid comes up, pitcher puts one right down the middle on the first pitch, and still thinking there are two strikes I start to ring him up. It was like this:
"STRIIIIIIKE! ... uh... one..."
For the rest of the day on any called strike one that dugout would yell out "STRIIIIIKE one." I couldn't help but to laugh at it. Good kids.
I have rung up batters on strike two more than once. It's embarrassing, but it happens.
Yep. The majority of times I've mistakenly rung up a batter on fewer than three strikes has been when the previous batter had a considerable number of pitches in his at-bat. While "strike three" is coming out of my mouth I'm already thinking "Oh, no! This is not strike three."
I like the foul ball sound effects. On a side note from the Cora clip: it was nice hearing Vinny's voice a little bit. I've been a Dodgers fan since I was a young boy in 1970. I sure do miss the days when I'd listen to him on my transistor radio on school nights under my pillow. Mom never knew. LOL
That was actually a great call. The ball was clearly fair and hit a good two inches inside the line.

Assuming the line was properly drawn, the ball was fair if it made the chalk fly up.

It may be a "good" or "proper" ejection but, it still doesn't explain WHY a coach comes out on this. So, from the dugout, you think you had a better look on that ball than an umpire looking right down the line? Coach, if yours is the best angle and general view, why aren't the umpires stationed there? Further, does he seriously expect the umpire to reverse this call? When have we EVER seen that happen? The bottom line is...the call went against him, he didn't like that and wanted to complain. He should be ejected just for stepping on the field and delaying the game in a situation where it's umpire judgement and the call will not be reversed.

I umpired Little League games for 12 years. One manager was busting a gut tearing down my strike zone on offense and defense. In the third inning with his team pitching I called time out and went into the dugout then put the ball back in play. His pitcher threw 2 pitches which I called balls cuz you have to see a strike. These could have been in the strike zone (no batter swings). When I told the manager he was right, he could see the strike zone better from his dugout than I couls behind the plate he pleaded with me to get behind the plate and shut up the entire game.

Umps did a good job here all around. Keep it up. Manager is dumb if he thinks a 1st base ump can turn and get a correct call on that ball.
@Don Keylips Had he chased the ball to the bullpen, he'd be way out of position for his responsibility at second base, which would be much likelier to cost him a chance at promotions than what you posed. Rocket liners happen at every pro level, expected to happen like this. Get real.
@Don Keylips Hard liners will always be tough calls and the plate umpire has a better read on that ball than the field umpire given the circumstances of that ball. The plate umpire will know that the ball was fair across the bag and has position on the call whether it is fair or foul. Given the field umpire's need to be at second this was the best way to resolve the fair/foul AND be in proper position to make a call at second. Plate umpires ARE responsible for fair/foul down 1st and 3rd lines when the field umpire is in B or C, so calling a fair ball that the field umpire couldn't see while in A isn't a stretch of the imagination. The ONLY time a field umpire should turn and see a ball along the line is when there's enough time to do so. Meaning it's not screaming past him at 150 mph. And ONLY IN THAT SITUATION does the Plate umpire need to be at second for a call. This ball got to the line so quickly, there was no time for him to turn.

Davey Martinez had a game at Wrigley Field (as an Expo) where he led off the first inning with a homer on the 10th or 11th pitch. He hit 3 HR on the season; 2 in that game.
The only thing that coach should be arguing over is their uniforms. Who in the World thought that combo was good??

Back when I was active in this, fair/foul was ALWAYS the plate ump's call in the two umpire system. The plate ump is facing the call anyway and any hesitation makes it tough for the base ump to get into position for a play on the batter-runner, wherever he wins up.

Thank you for acknowledging this. It got to a point for me back in 2010 where it seemed too many umpires were overly aggressive in their ejections. That example you showed of the umpire walking into fair territory to eject a player walking away from him was a perfect one. They either didn't understand (unlikely) or didn't care (more likely) how their dictatorial approach was affecting the outcome of games. It reminds me of the Tim Donaghy scandal in the NBA, but something like that would never happen in Major League Baseball (pause for eye roll).

2 man crew - tough call for the umpires. Either way they go with that call, a coach is coming out yelling at them. I do want to mention that the first base umpire needs to react better and pivot around his left foot and follow the ball.
I was at the last Tuesday game there. In the top of the 4th they gave the runner 1st on a 2-2 count. Also Wilmington did a mid inning pitching change and the pitcher got a good 4 minutes to warm up.
Young umpires make mistakes. Mistakes are a good phenomenon because you learn from mistakes. You also learn from success, but until you learn from mistakes you don’t have a lot of success. The coach has no evidence of a miscall for him to argue this so long, in my opinion. The ball is not clearly foul. So play like it wasn't.

2ump mechanics. Plate has foul call up to 1st, ump in “A” position calls post base. We don’t have to call fair only foul, but often point fair. Yet this field ump did not turn around and see and make call. He did mess up the mechanics.

If you're tipping your hat for the foul call you might want to put it back on. You can see the chalk kick up from the foul line. Not only that where the 1B ump is positioned you can see the ball go behind his leg that is aligned with the foul line before it hits foul.

Tenth inning of the Phillies and Diamondbacks game on 5/24/2023 had a pitch clock violation by the Arizona batter that did not earn a penalty, immediately followed by a pitch clock violation by Kimbrel (the Phillies pitcher) that earned a one ball penalty. Please review and put in a video if you think it is worthy.

I was listening to the Phillies and Diamondbacks on the radio and there was some brouhaha in the top of the 10th. Apparently it was to do with the pitch clock but hard to tell on radio. Might be worth breaking down?
I made a similar comment. Batter had two strikes, committed what looked like a pitch clock violation but wasn’t given strike three ; then the pitcher was called for a pitch clock violation and a ball was added to the count.

I don't even get arguing that much over a call in the top of the 5th inning of a tie game. Even if it was foul, there's 2 outs. Get the next guy. It's not like the game's over and you lost.
Yup, one of the better ejections so far this year. Lakewood err... Jersey Shore does have a nice ballpark.
it's plays like that where a little empathy goes a long way. yes, the first base umpire should have made the call. but that would have required a faster-than-humanly-possible duck-and-turn-and-refocus-the-line-of-sight to make the call, and he probably would have gotten grief for that. his choice to freeze and let the plate umpire make the call was, in my opinion, a micro- (if not nano-) second perfect choice. i challenge any manager or player to do better in that circumstance. and yes, as others are saying, the two umpires handled the discussion/ejection masterfully.

That is true if it's a bounding ball, if it's a fly ball or line drive, it is fair or foul depending on where the ball first lands beyond the base.
umpires NEVER yell or say "fair".... point and get in position. That is the PU's call all day, every day.
Here is a question...I know Players aren't allowed to touch umpires. Is it the same for Umpires, can they touch Players (coaches)? I ask because I notice the Umpire does touch the coach...I know very slight, but in the Majors, even so much as the brim of a hat touches an Umpire you can be tossed, even unintentional! So, can umpires touch Players and Coaches...?

This was one of those where the coach/manager was not going to stop until he got ejected. It's silly but some of these coaches just don't have any more maturity than that.
Actually, in a 2 man crew, the HP umpire has responsibility for fair/foul calls, not the base umpire. As you correctly stated, the base umpire has responsibility for the batter-runner. The base umpire does have the option to go out on outfield plays, but needs to tell his partner, so that the HP umpire can then take batter-runner responsibility. On this play, the umpires did it absolutely correctly, the base umpire stayed with the batter-runner and the HP umpire made the fair/foul call. And just from what I saw on the one angle, it was indeed a fair ball.
negative. first base was open/unoccupied, therefore the field/base umpire is in the "A" position. in the "A" position, he has fair/foul responsibility BEYOND FIRST BASE: ground balls, line drives, and fly balls. so on a routine play, he SHOULD have made a fair/foul call. however, as i have so expertly pointed out above, this play was anything but routine and his judgment to defer to the plate umpire was not only correct but wise.

@@granthampubunderground so if the base umpire is in "a" position, and a fly ball or line drive goes over the first baseman's head close to the foul line, and lands about 40 or 50 feet beyond the base, you're saying that's the home plate umpire's call? respectfully, i think not. at that point, he's at least (90+40) 130 feet away, with a batter/runner, probably the first baseman, and the "a" position umpire between him and where the ball lands. the "a" position umpire is already standing on the line, tracking the ball (turning his back to the plate and heading down the foul line). he's now less than 20 or so feet away and has an unobstructed line of sight to where the ball lands. and the second his back is turned, the plate umpire assumes responsibility for the batter/runner. please feel free to check any level of umpire's manual for 2-man crew assignments.
1:22 more recently than Alex, Rizzo did it with the cubs in his last year with them. It was like 16-18 pitches and ended with a homer
It always cracks me up when I see baseball managers dressed in the team uniform. Like there’s a chance that they might be called upon at any time to step in. They look like clowns, especially this guy with the red, yellow, and light blue uniforms.

The whole concept of managers being allowed to run out on the field in the middle of play has always been stupid to begin with. Make it an automatic ejection and be done with this nonsense. No other sport allows this. Every sport should also update their rules regarding ejections. If a player/coach doesn't immediately leave the field after being ejected then the team gets an official warning. If the team doesn't respond to the warning by insuring that the player/coach leaves then they will forfeit the game.
Baseball's designed with the intention that sometimes rule interpretations can in fact be adjusted if one side presents good evidence. The best example of this stuff actually happening are HBP calls. There was a famous instance in the 1969 world series where the Mets were able to get a batter awarded 1st base on a HBP that was not originally called by showing the umpires during argument the shoe polish which had rubbed off onto the ball when it hit the batter's foot. Such things have happened even in modern baseball - I believe it was last year that a guy was able to get a HBP call by showing the umpire the welt on his skin from the ball when the HBP was missed.
Similarly, some rules are really obscure and even umpires won't catch them immediately and they have to be pointed out. You see this with weird substitution and batting out of order type scenarios in some instances - in fact, batting out of order and similar concerns *require* action by the opposing team to enforce them - the umpire may observe that the batting team is hitting out of order, but they do not do anything unless the opposing team notices and objects, and they're not supposed to.
This scenario, of course, is none of those things, and a lot of arguments don't have anything to do with the umpire - for instance, a majority of MLB ejections fall into the category of 'manager has an upset player, intervenes and takes over the argument and gets tossed so his player doesn't get himself tossed'. Everyone involved knows what's happening, and in many cases I imagine the umpires and managers know (or even say, if they're not yelling loudly enough for the player to hear them) that that's what's really going on. Plenty of anecdotes of MLB managers actually saying to umpires during argument "I'm gonna get tossed here, so you might as well get it over with".
you're right that it doesn't happen in other sports, but in basketball, hockey and football, referees are often close enough to bench or sideline throughout the game for a coach to plead a case or at worst, yell at the referee. So, I don't mind managers being able to go out and argue a rule or debate a section of the rulebook or get clarification on a call. And if they get tossed, well, that was the risk. The managers today are nowhere near as verbose as the managers I grew up with in the 60s and 70s, so it's pretty tame in today's game. It's also not stupid to go out there. If you plead your case properly, if you truly think you were wronged, you can at least keep the umpire crew focused.

Still different than that one with Arenado. Arenado was walking away, had already been warned by the umpire, and when he continued the umpire took the step towards him to give him one more warning. In this one, the manager walks towards the umpire after the warning.

While I love the patience of the ump here. The first base umpire was not in good position so the manager had every right to be upset. Although the call was correct.
Why should he be upset with the plate umpire? Dude had to make a call with the 1st base umpire in the way. All he had to do was turn, make a call, then button hook in to take the runner to 2nd. I realize this is Single A ball so kudos to both for getting the call right and handling the moronic manager. BTW, what was he arguing about lol?!?

It’s crazy how much better the lower level umpires are than the MLB umpires. The MLB umpires have been mediocre to bad for years. These guys were great.

There is NO “fair call”… the plate umpire has the ball to the base, the base umpire has the ball from the bag to the fair pole. Yes, the pole is in “fair ground”.
On a fair batted ball the umpire points to fair territory and does NOT make a verbal call. If the ball is determined to be “foul”, a verbal “Foul” call is made with the “dead ball” arms extended overhead signal, then extend the arm and point into foul territory. Your welcome.

If umps shouldnt walk towards players walking away, players walking away shouldn't continue to talk trash as they walk away. It wouldn't happen if players didn't bring it on themselves by being wussies and talking trash with their back turned to the guy. Look him or her in their eyes and tell them(the umpire) what's on your mind, Player. Don't be a wuss.

Ejection was good, but other umpire shouldn’t jojn in and put hands on the manager. When they’re finished venting and having their say, they’ll storm off on their own. If not then someone will come off the bench and grab them.
Uhhhhh no. Once an individual is ejected, he MUST leave. Not should, must. The other umpire needs to step in and facilitate this. Coach has already wasted everyone’s time arguing a judgement call (a judgement call cannot be argued, by definition). He needs to go immediately.

Two man crews are ridiculous in professional baseball. Especially with no reviews. The play by play says it’s tough to tell. Not on replay. It’s easy to see it’s fair.
