      I disagree. I understand why people can't afford luxury watches and buy homages but there is more to it than that. Sometimes watches have stories and history. Does the conversation you have with the guy gonna be how omega had a good design so pagani made a cheap copy of it so thats why you got it or is it gonna be about how Omega partnered with swatch to make an affordable alternative with fun swatch colors and how there was a huge craze in the watch industry over it. Lets be honest, you didn't buy the pagani design for the "excellent" quality anyways.

      @@wallytuber I would agree about the swatch omega moon swatch if it was offered more locations. The problem is everywhere I am close to is not an authorized dealer, so I have to buy it secondhand, and the secondhand Moonswatch right now is almost triple what it retails. So I’m gonna wait, and I’ll buy it at a premium but it ain’t worth that much. So that argument, I still think the Pagani design is better

      @@wallytuber Hi, Wallytuber. I certainly understand your points regarding the cool collaboration between Omega and Swatch and the inherent history on the Omega side regarding the Speedmaster. However, objectively speaking, the MoonSwatch is literally the cheap copy of the Speedmaster: cheap Ronda chrono movement, cheap plastic case/caseback, cheap plastic crystal, cheap Velcro strap vs Pagani Design’s Seiko mechaquartz chrono movement, stainless steel case/crown/caseback, sapphire crystal, and stainless steel bracelet/clasp with solid links/end links. The only objectively cheap aspect of the Pagani Design is the price ($80) vs the MoonSwatch ($280). All that said, I still wouldn’t mind owning the MoonSwatch as well 👍😁

    With the Omega you’re paying for the branding, history, and bragging rights. The Pagani overall is a much better watch, it’s more durable and reliable while having similar look and feel for a price most people can afford.

      Another commenter already said it and I agree with him too. Ironically the real Speedmaster will live way longer if maintained properly. And I am not even a big Omega fan, actually I think their Speedmaster is the only modern model that is worth owning. But let's not get... you know, over our heads. The Speedmaster has a reputation and a name for a reason. And if this was not the case you wouldn't be here praising the copy. Let that sink in.

    Always makes me laugh when I hear people say “ it’s the watch that went to the moon “ 😂 your watch never went to the moon it’s a close copy of the ones that went to the moon, 99.9% of the people would never be able to afford one if they were put on sale by NASA. The Original Bulova moon watch sold at auction for 1.3 million US dollars. So technically your Omega Speedmaster is a Homage, Reissue, Copy or whatever you want to call it of the originals.
    As for the new MoonSwatch you’re better off buying a Pagani Speedmaster homage with stainless steel case, sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, stainless steel bracelet, solid end links, milled clasp, and a Seiko VK63 MeccaQuartz movement that will last you decades rather then that disposable sealed plastic watch that cost’s 3 times the price of the Pagani Design. Example if you put a deep enough scratch on the acrylic crystal “ which is very easy to do “ you won’t be able to buff it out, and since the crystal is fused to the case you won’t be able to swap it out either, good thinking Swatch !! 😂 feel sorry for the Omega brand who most probably had no say in the decision.

    Re homage vs fake, the homage may not say Rolex (or whatever) on it, but from 5' away you can't read that.
    And because it looks like a Sub/Speedy/Daytona whatever is why you bought it.

    So, you may feel better, but in the words of Nico Leonard bullshit, there is no homage, it's a fake.
    You may as well buy the fake, everything about it is the same, lets say it turns out you don't like the faux rivits and the 15mm height of a Tudor, but unknown to you the San Martin homage has real rivits and is 12.6mm high.

    The Pagani has better water resistance because of the screw down crown. The Omega doesn’t have a screw down crown. Which Omega has a good reason for not including it. Being a manual wind watch, it would be a pain to unscrew it every day or so to wind the watch. Plus the speedmaster was designed for auto racing then space. Never intended to be in water. They have the seamaster for that. Great video Mate!

    • @allthingsrandom8137
      @allthingsrandom8137  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, that’s a good point with the crown being unscrewed just to wind it. I can see major wear problems in the future if it were. Thanks!

    • @williamthomas6106
      @williamthomas6106 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A screw down crown offers almost no water resistance. A screw down crown is used for a dive watch primarily is to keep the crown from being extended accidentally while diving. Having the crown extend during a dive was potentially lethal as the watch hands could be adjusted, thus causing your dive time to be incorrect, leading to possible decompression sickness (remember dive watches were designed prior to computers, so you relied on the watch to show when you needed to begin your ascent.
      My Seiko 5 GMT and PRX Powermatic 80 both have hand winding capability and both are rated for 100m and have no screw down crown.
      If you believe a screw down crown offers leak protection, try to connect your toilet piping without any o-ring and rely simply on the threads to keep the water from leaking over the floor. It doesn't work. Be sure to have plenty of towels.
      In fact in every joint secured by an o-ring, water pressure is usually used to help seal the joint. This includes watch crowns where pressure is allowed to seep by the crown stem to provide sealing pressure to the o-ring. It is the outside sea pressure that actually helps seal the watch.
      On the moon, there is no standing water, and NASA only expected their astronauts to be in the water briefly if at all after splashdown. 50m was more than sufficient for an astronaut that might be in a life jacket on the surface of the ocean awaiting pickup by the retrieval team.
      50m of water resistance was all that was necessary by NASA, so it's all that is provided by Omega.

    • @driller7714
      @driller7714 ปีที่แล้ว

      Omega rates their water resistance to functional depths. If the watch says fifty meters it will actually be usable to a depth of fifty meters. Omega recommends having all gaskets inspected once a year if you’re going to use it in water. The water resistance of the Omega is actually probably better than the Pagani in real world application.

    I just subscribed to your channel. The point you brought up is one rarely talked about; buying a homage to see if you like it before investing in the real thing. I bought a Pagani homage to a Rolex Daytona, which I really like but is SO difficult to get. I'm glad I did, I didn't like it! The white dial has little contrast with the thin silver hands. I did the same thing with a Pagani "Speedmaster" and I really loved it. I bought an Omega. That being said, while I like the metal bracelet, I put a black fabric strap on the Pagani, which was added to the package from them. I cannot see replacing the expensive metal bracelet on the Omega with anything else, so to change things up, I we are the Pagani at different times, more like a fashion watch, or in certain areas. All of this just makes sense to me, kind of a "try before you buy" mentality. (I do wish Omega would put a discrete date window on like Pagani does.)

    I just wanted to say thanks for this review. This review was the first one that I recall seeing and coming back to it has been very revealing. Because this actually compares the Pagani to the Omega (*unlike so many other videos) its been very helpful in getting my head around the complexity of comparing the two watch. I've had the Pagani now for about 4 months (and have also bought another Homage by Phylida). Not having an Omega I can't do the comparison directly, so I've been referring to Omega's website. I've come back here once or twice before buying it, but tonight wanted to see a few things again which are best seen here.
    You've done the best comparison between the two watches on the internet (that I've found). Its been very helpful and you cover points and present angles that literally nobody else has done.
    So many reviews of the Pagani are by people who seem to have no observational skill in watches, no capacity to examine and just seem to want to entertain and amuse.

Some shots with a still camera (with a standard or slightly telephoto lens, so not a phone) taken using a tripod and then oriented in photoshop to be "spot on" can be used to create two images for a blend and merge to explore specific aspects of the watches. For example: th-cam.com/video/YckRlrs35DE/w-d-xo.html
      I'm very glad that I bought the Pagani because its such a close copy (in dimensions and weight) that its enabled me to see how well the actual Omega would work for me, I better understand the differences in how the various crystals look (and the effect of various levels of AR th-cam.com/video/aN_C0-cn3jA/w-d-xo.html) and that alone is worth the purchase price.
      However I'm probably not going to buy the Omega as I now know that I can't wear this watch as a daily driver because its just too tiring on me (due to size, weight and my wrist size of 6.5").

    The watch itself looks fine but the 20mm strap looks small on my wrist. Like wearing a live strong rubber band.
    If there was a tapered strap option the starts off at 20mm and then tapers off to 22mm, that would be awesome

      It’s not necessarily that any watch can survive in space. If I were to place a watch in a vacuum on my table, that’s not the same as traveling at 30 Gs into the atmosphere, vibrating like the largest coin operated bed in the cheapest motel, then still needing some level of sealability even in space.

    An honest question : What in Pete sakes name is the freaking deal with the “24 hr dial???. I think Seiko makes a VK-?? that calms an old pilot down. It has a proper (AND USEFUL) 12 hour totalizer. Do ANY of you guys need a dial that tells you “Hey, it is sunny outside! Ot Hey, it is night time”??? Help an old man out please. Humm, is a cheap watch that offers good value for money, but side by side it doesn’t look as the Speedy.
    I have both as you do, and Pagani have an excessive brightness and reflectivity, and text in tachymeter is quite thick.
    Pagani’s 1701 model has distance between the small spheres wider than the Omega, witch is typical from modern chronographs (is a Seiko movement, so the metric is fixed by them) but this small detail lets the hours marks less clear and regular (3, 6 and 9 are shorter).
    Also hands are thicker enough to break the visual balance with the rest of the sphere.
    Little details but IMHO is where the great brands make the difference…
    But I agree that is a good homage, the movement is reasonably good and I had no issues with springs when using the chronograph.
    I think the reason to not do a true waterproof watch when constructing Speedmaster is the winding mechanism.
    Normally is really difficult to isolate axis when winding, so for truly water sports you should build a screwed corwn or not certify the watch for them.
    Surely you can submerge the Speedy for s quick dive, but who knows… 😅

    I got the V3 just this week. I'd happily pay an extra 50$ if they made it with a good crystal. The V3 crystal is not domed it is actually rounded like a lense. Normally watch crystals have a flat area in the middle but this does not have that. It means the dial distorts no matter which angle you look at it from. It is subtle but unfortunately with the strong reflections from any angle of light, it manages to really reduce the overall quality of the piece.

  • @owenlaprath4135
    @owenlaprath4135 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Pagani made the better "Moon Watch", period, point blank!
    Who actually needs an old style chronograph for timing anything lasting 12 hours?
    Never mind Omega's 12hr chronograph function, as for timing rocket burns, a few minutes is all you need in a back-up watch, if your board systems are down, like for the 14 second burn for Apollo 13!
    More important: The first watch exposed to real space during a Western flight was the Glycine Airman with a 24hr dial during Gemini 11.
    There is a simple and good reason, why various GMT 24hr watches (mainly Rolex GMT "Pepsi" and digital G-Shock) were and are still so popular with astronauts, and many carried the Rolex as a backup and wore it and still wear it INSTEAD of the Omega inside a ship.
    NASA should have been flogged for not requiring a 24hr dial in the space-watch competition! In space, there is no daylight, so nothing to tell you, whether it is AM or PM!
    Personally, while I can use AM/PM, I find it useless and often confusing in many situations. Don't even get me started on that tiny PM dot in alarm clocks! I grew up with 24hr schedules and clocks in Europe, which are ALWAYS reliably unambiguous!
    Omega Speedmaster has no 24hr dial.
    Pagani PD-1701 has a 24hr sub-dial, maybe not ideal, but better than none!
    For "Earth" use, Pagani has better water resistance, a watch geek can probably "upgrade" to a plastic crystal if wanted, and my own Seiko/TMI VK63 in the "Paul Newman" PD-1676 (practically the same watch) is so far ridiculously accurate at gaining less than a second a month (try that with that 7-thousand Dollar mechanical Omega).
    AliExpress has the Pagani for well under 90, typically 70 to 80 bucks with free shipping.
    I always wanted a Speedmaster, but when a watch costs as much as I spent on a new car not that long ago, something is whacko!
    For TEOTWAWKI without batteries, I have my NH35 automatics for under 100 bucks, that hold time as well as the Omega, and as long as we have batteries, the Pagani and its VK63 is the superior time-keeper.
    Three thousand for a used watch? NO WAY!
    Seven thousand for a new watch, with outdated mechanical tech bettered by any cheap 10 dollar quartz watch? NUTS!

      The maximum differential pressure between space and the capsule is 1 atm. A 50m water resistant watch is rated to withstand a 5 atm differential. So the 50m water resistance was actually 5x the expected differential pressure that was expected. So as long as the watch survived the astronauts splashing in the water in case they had to exit the capsule and float in the ocean awaiting helicopter pickup, they were good.

    Hi. Your watch arguments regarding a trail run are weak. By your logic a man who wants to go into horse riding should first ride a donkey to get a feel for it, or a man who wants to try sky diving should jump off of his roof to see if he can stomach it. Analogue watches are never about functionality. Cast that notion off your mind. They’re all about look and feel and that only. They’re like jewellery that one wears, and one doesn’t wear a diamond necklace because it can be functional should you ever need to cut glass, for example. Stop being so American in your approach and attaching functions to objects and instruments. Some people buy dogs, some buy Gucci or pagani, and some buy both. That’s it. Full stop.

    I think most people that are into watches, care a lot about the looks, the materials and the movement. So if you can buy a watch for 120€/120$, that feels and looks a lot like "the real thing", then I think that's a pretty good deal tbh. An Omega (of course) offers you a little bit more, but it comes with a very high price. Personally I don't think it's worth the few thousand 💶💵 extra. Unless you'll see it as some kind of investment.
