So true. Can't quit current heavy labor job but I am finding ways to accommodate current pain along with doing many of your exercises. I have slowed down and focus more on how my muscles are working with the weights I'm pushing and pulling. Left work the first time in weeks last week without crying my way home from the pain. I was doing it to myself. Thank you so much.

Perfect timing on this. My mom has a "sharp pain in her hip". A friend who had a hip replacement has convinced her that's what it is. To me it's all the symptoms of a tight psoas from inactivity. But it's too easy to not blame yourself.
Personally, I just want to play and not prepare. Running, swimming, golf, disc golf, soccer, basketball, lifting. At any given point I'll have pain with my ankle, knees, hips, back, or elbow. I just wait for one to break down then focus on the conditioning/recovery until it's better. Then a month later one of the other ones pops up. There are just so many things to take care of.

I was an active opera singer (tons of travel and schleppjng heavy suitcases with music scores shoes etc) and vocal instructor for 40 years. I started having serious issues with my hips at least 12 years ago but the pain then, like now, comes and goes... Only now, I have serious mobility restrictions. Covid put me out of business, so since I was retirement age, I decided to retire. That seems to have exasperated my situation (Osteonecrosis in my hips which may have begun in my jaw 20 plus years in the making and spread there -NICO that 11 dentists ignored). In any case, your call to ATM has changed my life for the better combined with dietary changes and targeted exercises, which I don't always have the motivation to do...until I'm forced to get back on the stick. 'Am trying to avoid hip replacement surgeries (one side worse than the other). 'Have a tooth with a cyst at the root (only recently discovered after persistence at all costs) exstraction in about 10 days. After healing, I will have a clearer picture about my hips. In the meantime, ATM to the rescue.
    Thank you!

Thank you for speaking the harsh truth Matt. Classical Pilates was my passion. Doing it. Teaching it. Learning all about it. All Pilates all the time. I had warning shots - namely back pain, but I told myself that meant I needed to do it MORE. Until my body finally screamed at me to stop and I had to quit entirely and go into pelvic floor PT for 6 months followed by another 4 months of Neurokinetic therapy to try to retrain my body so I could resume my Pilates practice. It was not to be. In order to be healthy I had to STOP. I took up Nia, a fusion fitness cardio form that my body loves, and which taught me that I can stay fit doing movement that feels *good*. But I only do it a couple of times a week. I do traditional resistance training a couple of times a week. I go for walks a couple of times a week. The only thing I do every day is Hanna Somatics which is not at all exercise but which is nourishing movement. No matter how great an exercise form or sport is, I don’t believe any one can give our bodies all it needs.

@@KimSheward we’re not alone. If you read what JP wrote he quite clearly states his opinion that our spines should have no curves. And he designed his work to accomplish just that - also what he wrote and not just my personal opinion. The classical work puts the spine in positions that removes our pesky curves then fires up muscles to hold it there. The same principle is why the Scroth Method works to correct scoliosis. When I saw the Teaser (and all other exercises of that same shape like Spine Stretch Forward, The Elephant, Horseback, et al) as a way to take away my lumbar curve, that was the lightbulb that made me walk away. Best of luck to you in your healing journey.

@@tracyvision You as well Tracey. I've never heard any of that about pilates before but now that you mention it...? Hmmmm, I can see what your saying. I get amazing results for my clients, take them out of pain, fix hip issues, balance and posture issues, leaning them out/weight loss, is just a side benefit albeit a great one. And I love pilates so much, I have been teaching this for 30 yrs! However, it's been a hellish few months for me. C4 Retrolisthesis with pain in my neck so bad I had to hold my head up to get out of bed. I'm not talking a day or two but, 3 wks with a neck support! Prior to that, a very bad chiropractor over rotated my sacrum to the right so badly I couldn't walk. The pain was excruciating. Again in bed for a month! Can you imagine? I'm now out of pain but one wrong move and I'm back in bed on ice packs/moist heat all day. I've practically stopped doing pilates bc I can't hardly roll up anymore my low back is so tight. but, I blame a bad chiropractor for this injury, not the pilates but I definately see what your saying. Wishes for your rapid healing as well. I need to check out Nia and Hanna Somatics? Always interested in different methodologies. Thanks Tracy And thanks to Matt for your video's they have helped me so much.

Wow. Straight talk from Matt. My passion: Rowing and racing my single rowing shell. I did it for 20 years, only one injury from hitting a buoy. I did my best to counter the repetitive motion with weight training, stretching, cycling BUT did not have the information like you share in your videos to address my particular physical compensations ~ although I sure tried my best. Your information is priceless, so now I am working with your info to correct some pretty severe pain in my hips ~ Not convinced it's from rowing particularly, but more from the way I've functioned since birth and from bringing that way of moving to whatever sport I do. I appreciate your videos and will sign up for your DYI hip program soon.

I love the Radiohead reference, I also think that sometimes, though probably in reference to different things.
I recently had to stop doing yoga, and a long time ago I had to stop dance (mostly ballet). I have a lot of joint hypermobility and yoga was just exacerbating the issue without providing the strength necessary to support my joints. I’m still trying to find an all over strengthening routine that works for me, as I’ve been to PT for an ankle, my SI joint, my neck/headaches, and a shoulder in the last two years, not to mention all the other times I’ve done PT. Right now I’m trying Pilates.

You're both adults and if this is explicit, then at least you're on the same page. It also helps absolve me of that guilty feeling i get if a client is visiting "too often".

I thought I could overcome these pains by sheer tenacity which only made things worse. Six years later I'm still trying to figure out how to eliminate my back pain, neck pain, leg pain, arm pain hand pain etc I had to give up jogging and I can only lift light weights. So true! Mine was running and I developed intense pain as my knee cap was being pulled to the side because of my tight IT band. I went to the doctor and he said I just needed to run less and wear a knee band. I didn't like it, but a took a short break and wore my knee band religiously. Bottom line I was still in pain and it was through watching runner stretching videos on TH-cam that I got my answer, that I need to stretch. Once I did that regularly stretched the pain disappeared. Now, when I start to feel tight and get a twinge of pain I immediately start stretching. Same is true when I pulled my achilles. Doc prescribed muscle building exercises for my calf an voila. It worked.

If your ride a bike a lot, but do not run, your knees would stay weak. If you pedal with your knees pointing outward, it would cause alignment problems later. I was riding a bike a lot, but did not run. I developed knee pain after I started running. Now, I regularly run, bike, weightlifting. My knees are stronger even though I aged.

I think it also says a lot about the world we're living in that so many people will keep doing a hobby that's causing them pain bc they can't do without the joy it gives them. It says a lot that we're that desperate for joy or pleasure. We're spending an awful lot of our lives doing things that we really don't like doing. Joy is a need just like food, water, and shelter, and I think it's messed up that we kind of see ourselves as weak if we admit that.

The adrenaline pump kills the pain, but when you're done, you're hobbling home to jump into the epsom salts bath. I think sports are similar. The thing I've learned is to handle what ever imbalance is happening and address it,. And, yes, it's often through building strength, and doing various kinesthetic exercises..I did many of these exercises for my entire career. Discipline is key!

This last year or two, I've been concentrating on strengthening my knees (along with other challenges) so I could walk. The first day involved two airports. The second day a lot of walking around their neighborhood along with more walking. The third day, we took the train to San Francisco for the Pride Parade. On those three days, I logged 8.400, 11,222, and 12,554 steps on my fitbit. In San Fran, my knees finally gave out. However, it only took about three days to recover. So, I am quite pleased. The thing about cycling is that (on the road at least) minor flaws in pedalling (e.g. Pushing a big gear, misaligned cleats, seat too low/too high) can cause a lot of problems and make it very hard to see the one underlying issue, the issue with the cyclist, not the bike setup. 100k is 3-4 hours of cycling, so there must be lots of opportunities to figure out when fatigue degrades form, etc, I would find some folks who specialize in fitting the bike to the cyclist (easier than it sounds) and I might begin by riding 10 to 20K rides without cleats. Maybe more revs while riding much smaller gears feels better. Getting out our the saddle on climbs, lots of stretching targeted directly at hip dysplasia. The thing is too take your time, adjust one thing a time, and definitely reduce the hours in the saddle.

I'm noticing a lot of tightness in my right soleus/calcaneal tendon, and I'm trying to figure out how to relieve it.

My passion is canoe camping. And to a lesser extent backpacking. At various times I’ve had knee or low back pain, and less often shoulder, hip, or ankle pain. The things I’ve learned have been: a very little exercise and stretching prevents the problem on trips, and the pain usually happens not where the problem is. For example, the low back pain seems to be caused by tight hamstrings. If I do yoga regularly and do deadlifts, squats, and lunges I don’t have the problems with my back.

The more I think about it it’s miraculous I’m not more sore when I camp. Paddling for hours interspersed with carrying a 40 pound food pack and my 55 pound canoe (at the same time) over steep uneven rugged trails and then sleeping on hard ground for 9-12 days once or twice a year is asking a lot of one’s body. I’m pretty proud I’m still at it in my fifties, and have a goal to continue into my seventies at least!

    I have that T Shirt. :)
I also have a screwed up hip that stops me cycling (which I moved to because I kept getting injured playing soccer and American Football). Bike fit can mitigate or exacerbate existing issues, but ultimately, the perfect fit can't hide the underlying issues forever. :(

Skate skiing and whitewater kayaking has contributed to bow leggedness and outward hip rotation. I do a lot of hip exercises, because I have learned about the imbalances these sports have caused. Now if I can just take care of the Morton's neuroma.

Yeah I've only just learnt the really hard way that the reason I need total knee replacements is because I'm very quad and hamstring dominant. Running gone, cycling gone, walking nearly gone. I wish they taught this in schools seriously. Knowledge is power and health people.

I loved to play squash....previously my hips hurt (had hip impingment and short hip flexors, getting older) ....played squash with pain...if I played once a week it got worse....if played 3 times a week, could hardly walk for a while, then everything got better and no pain....if I stopped pain came back....unfortunately now where I am, there are no squash courts,so can't play anymore (pain is back).....you say ATM,I always say, use or lose it.

For the last 12 years, my passion has been hiking and in the last few years, thru hiking, which is really awful for you physically, to be honest. When I am home, I stretch my legs as often as I can remember, do foot strengthening exercises, and try to eat as healthy as possible. On trail, I stretch every night, and soak my legs and feet in a stream when I can. Once a year, I take about six weeks off from hiking altogether.

Hi, maybe I missed something. But he seem to be asking on extra information to avoid pain after cycling. And he seem to have done the program before as well.
What is your suggestion then? just stop cycling that much? That’s not some thing he seems to want to stop. He is asking for tips to continue doing what he loves as much as he wants.
So, what would you suggest then? Stop cycling as much? Ok and then… he obviously isn’t looking to do that.
I found myself angry listening to this one. Because I also would love to continue competing at the highest level and I have stopped due to pain. But that isn’t the outcome I’m ultimately looking for.

pun intended, the "think muscles" thing finally CLICKED with me recently while working on my FAI and realizing that it's never been an issue with the hip bones, it's the tight muscles that are pulling the hip into unnatural positions and literally pulling the hip bones against or away from each other.
