As long as you take advantage of the 100 day buyout, no interest will incur
All I can say is the Kicker Solo X has a rock solid voice coil but the need to start using more glue on the spider landing and coil to spider connection.
It seems that Bobby would’ve explained why he dislikes the threaded inserts. Especially since he was so passionate about it. I use them all the time and I love using them. I’ve never had anything go wrong by using them. Kicker also uses a type of threaded insert in their quad box.
You can infer from the short clip that threaded inserts are difficult to align based on a pen marking then drilling. Far too easy to install slightly cocked and not get good, flat contact with the screw to basket interface. It will lead to uneven contact between the basket and enclosure, causing air leaks.
Threaded inserts are fine if you mount the insert on the opposite side like a nut, use adhesive when you put them in, tighten them up prior to actually installing the sub - in and out over and over again, no issue.
The problem with wood screws is that fluted head design that doesn’t seat correctly against the flush rim of the driver. Sometimes it will actually dent in the rim of the driver
The L7s have a sound of their own. A tight punch tone to them. I had a set of 12s when they first released them way back in the day. It was a sealed enclosure being powered by the ZR1000 in a 94 cutlass supreme and it turned heads all the time. Good times.
I think the main problem is how small kicker had to make the spiders to make that insert work. Its like having the drawback of a 4” coil being a limited spider area but you still only have a 3” coil. I didnt like the look of the small spider as soon as i had it in hand. Severely limits performance and is obviously a weak point. There must be a lot of stress and tensions on that small spider. Ya 11,000 watts over and over i can see damaging the first spider. 5,000 watts shouldn’t separate the cone from the coil though. I see reliability issues in the new solo x’s future. Definitely don’t run over rated power.
@@CVLova a large box is totally fine as long as it's in spec for that sub. I run a 3.25cu ft box with my 12" comp Q for over a year now and it's worked like a champ
@@sissymarylen15741a not all the time. What their talking about is bass "burps" it a temporary bass note at high power to try and get a high SPL number. Run it at 5000w on music and it'll burn up real quick
@@sissymarylen15741a no 5k is definitely overrated power and more than I would put to that subwoofer. I think that people thought this was going to be a woofer you could throw twice rated power at. It’s obviously not. I think if you want it to be reliable you need to stay around 2 to 3k. I still don’t understand why they took a basket big enough for a decent size spider and put probably the smallest spider into it in its class just for the capability of the the drop in recone. I would have rather had a decent size spider for a 3” coil. It’s one of the main benefits of 3” compared to 4” and they took it off the table.
yeah, at that price it should. Unless this guy invented wood itself, I don't care what he built his boxes from, his level of craftmanship or hours spent on a box, if you constantly screw into wood, it will eventually strip and you'd get air leaks from the holes. And if you angle the ports to blow over the subwoofer, you'd never be able to test if the woofer mount holes are leaking, but it doesn't change the fact that it would be.
I’m a big fan of the threaded inserts with machine screws. Yeah it might be overkill for most applications, but I always use them because they’re cool and look professional. Great job Big D.
I remember the early days of the solobarics, they were well known for the voice coil former shrinking and grabbing hold of the pole piece. A guy here in Perth (Western australia) that went through a stack of them ended up swapping to JL subs in his chase for 160dB in his toyota starlet. This was 20 years ago.
@WSKRBSCT I have a W6 that cost me just as much as this SoloX 12 that ill be picking up today so I am more than curious about cost over performance with this one. I also have a HCCA 10 and have compared the two, the JL and the Orion, built boxes to the exact spec for each woofer and that Orion 10 seems to be a much louder woofer, being smaller and costing half the price is why I am commenting. Don't get me wrong that W6 is a nice woofer and sounds good but as far as competition goes, I can assure they are not match for the Orion's in priceable sound and air movement and this is comparing a 10 Orion to a 12" JL. Maybe on a DB meter it might show something different, but I doubt it. I'm curious about this SoloX so once I build a box for it I am going to compare the three. Im comparing dollar for dollar and so far Orion has the win.
And this is why I'm a from day one kicker fan! Especially the solo brick line. Ever since I seen them in a magazine I middle school. I had 2 15 dual 4ohm vc solo berics on a 4500 mono block d class. Still favorite system I've owned.
Yeah, you could hack that back together (both times) and take it easy on it. The sub can handle the power, it just needs to be held back from over excursion.
I'm not impressed. It has a 3.75" coil, and should handle power better. You shouldn't look forward to buying recone because the sub is supposed to last at least 2 years on rated power. It looks like this one isn't going to last on rated long-term.
I took 2-RF 15" P3's in a 8.0cuft 38hz tuned box full electrical and a JP33, I sent over 6k to 2- 600w rms 2.5" voice coils with a max of 30mm XmaX both ways, and they've yet to smoke or rip the spiders. Now not full blast for hours, but you get the picture. I want some RF Power subs but I'm not paying $1500 a sub. RF has lost their mind on prices and still made in China, unlike the beginning when they were made in Tempe,AZ.
@The BoofGod I've been a RF fan for many years. Once they shipped all their products to China, I hesitated but still bought. There is no way I'm buying any Power series subs. They are on meth if they think I'm giving $1500 for a 16" sub. I could buy 6 NVX 2K rms 46 total XmaX for that price, and $1500 for a Power 2500? Uh, no. Can get a Korean made JP 83 for almost the same price with 4-5 times the power. They have lost this once die hard Fosgate fan.
It was obvious it wasn't the voice coil from the last video. I made a comment on it that you could see the cone had buckled in one of the corners. Although I didn't expect the spider to be as severely damaged as it turned out to be.
Definitely took some massive burps in a box not designed for it. A 148, im sure it can do a 150. Man this is just a single 12, i can only imagine what the 15s and 18s will do. Ive been blown away with my Solox and im glad i bought it. Great video💯👍
I like that enclosure design with the sideways ports. I just wonder if it affects the efficiency at all or causes any cancellation since the ports are loading against one another firing directly toward one another and perpendicular straight across the cone area of the woofer. Not saying it does it's just something I've never seen before who knows maybe it enhances the output. Would be nice to see some testing on that box versus an equivalent volume one with ports forward or rear.

I have a question about some amplifiers. Have you heard of slapz amplifiers? Are they any good? Which amplifier would you recommend Orion XTR1500.1Dz or jp13 or any other around the same price point and power output
Why the threaded insert though? Whats wrong with them? I have used screws since the dawn of time and after I've taken a sub one too many times in and out I've destroyed the mounting surface, so I want to move to threaded inserts + bolts. Whats wrong with them.
Too much powa baby boi! One thing to remember. If you’re going to use straight up screws you gotta use pan head screws. Bugle tip screws bend the basket and can compromise the seal between the box and sub. I’m surprised Bobby Gately didn’t mention that. Also, damaging the basket should void the warranty of the sub.
I bought a Gately enclosure, and I installed inserts. No issues so far. It would help a lot if he explained why not, but if he says don't use them because he simply doesn't like them, then he really shouldn't make comments like that.
That smoke machine reminded me when I had my home system. 17 hooked a bunch of flashlights up to the speaker wires so they would go to the beat then I'd hot box a couple cigarettes. Get the light beam through the smoke effect lol
Watching the thermals confirmed to me that I would not want a square woofer. It showed extra heat in the corners, which makes sense considering each point along the short curves will have a different radius and flex length and not have a smooth motion. M&M Godfather 15’s for life!! If I could ever find them again!! Lol
how is it brother can you help me? I have a question ! I have a couple of buffers, the puch classic PCH-410 10'! i can get them to work with an alpine 3543 2 channel amp !
Well, I would say that was a good test there Big D. Now they know how much they can take and make the necessary changes if they can to their subs to make them better.
The issue is you stop the speaker completely stopping the air flow and allowing the coil to over heat .instead on turn the the volume down and let the speaker cool down then stopping the sound .
Yeah for $699 im just gonna grab something sundown or DB that can handle 5 6 or 8k. I got 4 x12 v3s when they were on introductory for $ 541 only 649 now i think id go that route imho. threaded inserts with triple baffels all the way. 😂 😂😂
All glue! Dayum that motor structure got POWA! Kicker could use some more adhesive if they can, the coil shouldn't be held back. Or that's reserved for the 15". HifiVega on the backstage pass, probably whispering "turn it up"
@@busterbarlow9094 Yeah because people need to replace a whole unit in the field because it can handle the wattage. OR Does Kicker know people just like to put way too much wattage and abuse to their product? Ha AH!!! Either way they seem to win.
Really not sure what your point is? A subwoofer is the sum of the parts. Who cares what fails first, provided it doesn't fail within the manufacturer's rated limits. If I redline a motor for 10mins and the motors blows, do I blame one specific part as faulty? Dem Hondas and their terrible rings..... See? Doesn't make sense.
@@firebirdude2 " it doesn't fail within the manufacturer's rated limits." So the whole replacement thing was designed because of limits? HA AH!! You just don't get it do you? Maybe you need to read my comment and yours a few more times then it will dawn on you where you messed up. hint hint. You don't worry about replacements if everything is within the limits sir. Clearly it is about failure and they expect it to happen often so they designed the replacement to be drop dead easy. How easy is it to just buy a whole new sub and drop one in? Oh you want it cheap - here ya go just drop the replacement core into the spot you just BLEW because you can't obey the limits. HA HA WE GOT YOU!! I can't make this stuff up.
Gately boxes are made with professional grade birch, much denser than MDF. A normal wood screw will rarely fail, then if they do then you use an insert. Square subs cannot be rotated like a round sub, so if the insert spins out you are screwed. Too many people using power tools on the install screws. I assure you Bobby Gately has seen this many times, hence his objection.
You have nothing much to worry about besides the rear window trim will come off. I have an 05 4runner with 2 avatar 15s ran on a tramps md12000.1. I also was worried about the rear window mechanism tearing up so I added as much sound deadening on the inside and out side of the tailgate.
Hey buddy great video as always. Quick question, when a subs says 1000rms continuous, I have an amp that the dyno read 1015 on a 40hz but when playing music we get like half the power. So should we get an amp that is 2x the rms of the the sub ?
yes... when the driver cone is moving back and forth, the impedence rises and falls.. sometimes, you could have a spread from 1 to 4 ohms.. if an amp is doing 1000 watts at 1 ohm, at 4 ohms its probably doing like 300 at best.. so you want to have an amp that can do your drivers rms at 4ohms...
just get a taramps smart3bass... its 300 bucks brand new.. dynos at 3000+ watts from .5 ohm - 2ohms.. does about 1700 at 4ohms... best bang for the buck

I'm late but have a question about the Gately enclosure........the port design doesn't allow for a loading wall ...what are the pros and cons of this?
What's the purpose of having those ports wrap around the front of the box like that?
Very impressive love Kicker
I have a question about some amplifiers. Have you heard of slapz amplifiers? Are they any good? Which amplifier would you recommend Orion XTR1500.1Dz or jp13 or any other around the same price point and power output
Why the threaded insert though? Whats wrong with them? I have used screws since the dawn of time and after I've taken a sub one too many times in and out I've destroyed the mounting surface, so I want to move to threaded inserts + bolts. Whats wrong with them.
I’ve got two evl 12’s in a 2 12 armor box all skar on a 4500.1rp skar amp up against my trailblazer hatch and it hasn’t broke the window yet
Should i go 2-10 kicker L7s or 2-10 ct sounds messo's??
Mans literally BLEW this sun apart!! Was not expecting that!
What screws do you recommend?
Its in his comment. Pan head screws.
This is the way I look at it .. if I buy something .. it belongs to me.. i do as I please with it
I bought a Gately enclosure, and I installed inserts.
Would I be good with a 3500 rms deaf bonce amp? For 1 12 inch
Makes sense to at least install the sub with screws once before installing the inserts to ensure they find a home in the proper orientation
Honestly, looks like you could have shoved that spider back into place/forced the spider cap back into place, maybe a little epoxy, and re-installed!
Watching the thermals confirmed to me that I would not want a square woofer. It showed extra heat in the corners, which makes sense considering each point along the short curves will have a different radius and flex length and not have a smooth motion. M&M Godfather 15’s for life!! If I could ever find them again!! Lol
Awesome video Big D 👏. Can't wait for the next one keep up the good work 👍

Was that "3 kinds of Bass" by Bass Outlaws?
Wha song was you playing when you added the fog machine?
Great vid man. Lots of things were learned here. 😎👍👍
I have used T nuts and see them on most Pa speaker and Instrument cabs and amps. Surprised he doesn't like them. I wonder what the reasoning is.
He was just butt hurt someone pointed out his insanely expensive box should have come with inserts to begin with. 😆👍
@@brian6029 lololol
That 808 dream hits really hard
Can you do a Stetsom Bravo Flex 3k? Maybe even a derby vs Taramps Smart Bass 3k. A pretty even battle of Brazilian at price and specs.
Can that box be face Down? Does it clear the floor you should do that and see what numbers yoj get
You might be able to reglue the detached spider... it wont be easy but i bet you could force it back in place and glue it with epoxy or E6000
It’s going back to KICKER for analysis
The only kicker I have ever blown with a refurbished S12L7 with a JL 1000/1.
how is it brother can you help me? I have a question ! I have a couple of buffers, the puch classic PCH-410 10'! i can get them to work with an alpine 3543 2 channel amp !
Do you have a prefered spl woofer?
How accurate is that SPL meter app on your phone? Do you recommend it to others?
The phone and app are not measuring the spl. The device you see is relaying the information to the phone.
Well, I would say that was a good test there Big D. Now they know how much they can take and make the necessary changes if they can to their subs to make them better.
he did have fun with this demo 😄
I prefer the term letting the genie out the speaker when I have smoked one! Or two maybe over the years. 😂
Insane power, like to see more from this
Thays crazy 11k and all it did was eat the spider awsome
Couldn't you just tuck that voice coil back in and reuse it, or did it rip?
DANG! That speaker is a BEAST!!!! I'd love to have one, but can't really afford it. 😢
Hcca’s use that same type of recone feature and honestly it’s amazing
Could you please test some under seat all in one subwoofer systems?
Thanks for the suggestion
The issue is you stop the speaker completely stopping the air flow and allowing the coil to over heat .instead on turn the the volume down and let the speaker cool down then stopping the sound .
Would love to see what it does with the KXA2400 at 1ohm
more dB when you let it downfire?
Yeah for $699 im just gonna grab something sundown or DB that can handle 5 6 or 8k. I got 4 x12 v3s when they were on introductory for $ 541 only 649 now i think id go that route imho. threaded inserts with triple baffels all the way. 😂 😂😂
Hey, can you see if you can repair it and reinforce it or maybe someone else could.
Now I know to attach some paper to my port to get louder 😅 talk about more sound lol, excellent video brotha!
That drop in recone is just like my Orion spl15 hcca
What head unit is that in the sequoia
Was that techmaster?
I have a gately box that came with thread serts tho?
All glue! Dayum that motor structure got POWA! Kicker could use some more adhesive if they can, the coil shouldn't be held back. Or that's reserved for the 15". HifiVega on the backstage pass, probably whispering "turn it up"
How much can the coil handle? Seems the parts not ready for the wattage.
Its rated for 2k the parts are more than ready for the Watts. What are you talkng about? Should all subs take 10k over rated? Lmao
@@busterbarlow9094 Yeah because people need to replace a whole unit in the field because it can handle the wattage.
OR
Does Kicker know people just like to put way too much wattage and abuse to their product?
@@firebirdude2 " it doesn't fail within the manufacturer's rated limits."
So the whole replacement thing was designed because of limits?
Interesting video. I like what you're doing.
So what i hear on my phone is actually the distortion?
Did Gately say why he doesn’t like the threaded inserts?
That's what I heard.
@@jonanderson4474 yeah but *why*
Gately boxes are made with professional grade birch, much denser than MDF. A normal wood screw will rarely fail, then if they do then you use an insert. Square subs cannot be rotated like a round sub, so if the insert spins out you are screwed. Too many people using power tools on the install screws. I assure you Bobby Gately has seen this many times, hence his objection.
Kicker solo x vs sundown v3 which one is the better choice
V3 of what series? Your question is too broad.
There is no best, only what works best for you.
You probably mean xv3 right? That would be a fun couple videos.
@@dextermorgan1 yes xv3
How much is the recone components compared to the original cost of a new unit?
$249 vs $699
How is the rear hatch handling the bass . Gonna do the same sub and enclosure in my 03 4runner
You have nothing much to worry about besides the rear window trim will come off. I have an 05 4runner with 2 avatar 15s ran on a tramps md12000.1. I also was worried about the rear window mechanism tearing up so I added as much sound deadening on the inside and out side of the tailgate.
Damn I'd love to see that thanks for the info 👍 🙏
@@marioHernandez-ew6vd I would show you pictures but I don't know how to on TH-cam
Me either bro I was trying to figure it out but couldn't
Got some older kicker stuff been bumping for 10 years on the same stuff
Awesome content 👏
That guy was mad because you made his box better. lol😂😂
That sub is no joke. I want one now.
I was waiting to see this. I seen this woofer at a sound shop....got some weight on it for sure...
Hey bud, I hate to assume but, are you running off the bench and just putting the box into the vehicle?
Nice durability testing👍🆙️😉
Thanks for the video!!!!!!!!
When is Kicker going to make a round Solo X?
WHERE CAN I BUY ONLY THE BOX THANKS

How much is that box??

@@bdc211 thanks man
