The Kindle Colorsoft and any color e-reader, including Kobo e-readers, use an RGB filter to display colors. This filter has the downside of giving even regular text a soft look and causing graininess in the display. E-Ink displays are natively black and white. So, to create color, they have to use a special filter and then light the display in a certain way to get it to display color evenly. The filter also causes color e-readers to have less deep blacks, resulting in a lower contrast ratio. So, regarding raw image quality, the regular Kindles will have sharper and brighter images with a white background closer to actual paper. Creating color also does chew into battery life a bit due to the slight bump of extra power needed to manipulate the ink capsules and RGB filter. The Kindle Paperwhite series has better battery life than the Colorsoft. So, the new 12th Gen Kindle Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition will have more advantages than Colorsoft regarding "display quality." The only exception is that they don't have color. The new 12th-gen Kindle Paperwhite models run the newest E-Ink-E-Carta display, and the Colorsoft runs the newest E-Ink-Kaleido display. A Kaleido is similar to the E-Carta display, only that it's built with a CFA. (Color Filter Array) This filter only allows specific corresponding light colors (red, green, or blue) to pass through to render color. So the TLDR is that Colorsoft and colored Kobos, for example, have to pass all visual elements through an RGB filter that will degrade sharpness, contrast, and brightness. But the one excellent result is color. Colored e-readers will improve over time. But right now, the tech is just an E-Carta display with an extra RGB filter array called Kaleido. Also, regarding a dark mode, Amazon said they may introduce a proper dark mode in a future software update. It's important to note that the Colorsoft may not achieve the same deep black levels as other Kindle models due to its contrast ratio. Consequently, blacks may appear slightly lighter and more grayish compared to the Kindle Basic or Paperwhite when dealing with a new Colorsoft dark mode in a future update.
I did the same. I pre-ordered the colorsoft, but was really disappointed. I hated the grainy screen, the screen was really dark so I had to crank the brightness up - but that drained the battery really quick. Also I felt like I was getting headaches/eye strain from it. And also had the yellow tinge at the bottom as well - definitely not worth the money 💸 Sent it back and got the paperwhite raspberry - and I’m so happy with it ☺️
My Colorsoft is being delivered in a few days. I'm realistic about it because I've been reading on a Kobo Libra Colour. That's the fair comparison because it's using the same colour technology. I got my Colorsoft for £170 because I'm trading in my old 2016 Kindle, so there are ways to make it more affordable.
I have a 2018 kindle paperwhite (the battery life is going) and I’m hoping the new one goes on sale for Christmas 🤞🏾 even if not I might still buy it as a gift to myself lol
I knew what to expect when buying an eink color screen, but experiencing it is so different. I was not prepared for the major headache I would endure reading on a grainy screen on top of the very visible (at least on mine) diagonal lines. I plan to try another one once they've fixed the issue as I've heard others refer to the grain as like reading a newspaper, so I suspect mine might have been defected, but we'll see.
I do miss the Kindle experience. But I switched over to a BOOX device because I wanted the physical buttons. I have an Oasis, but the battery was absolutely terrible. I used my oasis for about three years before I made up my mind to try something different. Overall, I enjoy having the freedom to use multiple reading platforms. But sometimes the apps just behave badly
I bet if they cut the price the star rating would be better. People don’t like the price for something that took away features that the paperwhite has. They need to lower the price and accept that it’s not worth what they valued it at. Lol
My current kindle is the 2018 version, and after watching Jess’s video I purchased this new kindle paper white! Watching your video has made me even more excited!!! 🩷
It’s such a bummer that the color soft has so many issues, but if they can make it right and then lower the cost, I think they will come back from the problems. I want the new paper white in pink !
I just ordered the mattalic paperwhite I have had my kindle less than a year but with the lag time and how long it takes to load almost everything I wanted to upgrade and get the faster version.
The signature paper white also have automatic light thingy, which isn’t on this one and there are paper turning options which also isn’t on this one. So it isn’t just a storage and charging difference…I thought it was worth pointing that out as I didn’t actually know this until looking at the full spec and comparison chart. The wireless charging isn’t worth it for me as…I mean I still have to put a plug into the wall and into a device, it just means the wire doesn’t go into the kindle, but into the device that the kindle docks on… The one thing I can’t decide on is between this pink or the metallic pink of the signature….i can’t seem to find anyone that shows a difference or has the metallic back.
I definitely won't buy this. In South Africa, the price for it is over 8K. This is because it has to be imported and that price is inclusive of import tariffs, taxes, etc. Also, the issues with it, no thanks.
Unfortunately all Kindle owners compare the Colorsoft to the Paperwhite or other versions without a Kaleido 3 display, when in fact they should be comparing it to another similar device such as the Kobo Libra Color. You can’t really blame the average consumers though, Amazon did a poor job making it more apparent for non-color e-reader owners about the effects/limitations from current e-ink display technology. I still believe the Colorsoft is one of the best color e-readers, but the price is too damn high for technology that isn’t actually new or revolutionary. If they were to create/use a new display with less “graininess” then the price would be accepted.
I’m going to upgrade to the newest KPW. I will not be getting the Colorsoft. This thing is turning into a marketing disaster for Amazon. And it’s not just an issue with the color filter technology. It’s the yellow band problem caused by the adhesives used in laminating the glass. No thank you.
💕🩷💕 I actually bought the colorsoft, and the jade paperwhite signature edition. When I first got them I immediately preferred the paperwhite. I do like the color, I also do have the yellow line issue. I’m thinking about returning the colorsoft. The yellow line doesn’t bother me much but ….. just think I prefer the jade paperwhite signature edition.
🩷 I got the color soft and ended up returning it. It wasn’t loading my library. So now I’m a kindleless reader. Now you have me wondering if I should get the Paperwhite.

I have no desire to get the color soft after everything I’ve been hearing.
Agreed. Makes me glad it wasn't available to Canadian buyers as well
Mine is coming tomorrow and I'm so excited for it! 💕

So glad I've watched this video before I bought the soft color kindle
I got the Raspberry Kindle paperwhite for over a week ago and I love it 🩷

The colour soft, I mean.
Color e-ink is always going to be grainy compared to a black and white ereader. It’s the limitation of the technology

Hey Tori what was wrong with the Kindle colors soft😊
You should watch her last video, it goes into a lot of details about why she didn’t like it & was so helpful 🫶🏼
Also many youtubers has also done videos. Including PeaceLoveBooks.
