Unfortunately, a lot of authors have had experiences similar to mine. I was "wide" on all the platforms (Amazon, Kobo, BN, Smash, etc.) for a while, but the problem was, my READERS were on Amazon using KU. I did a survey and found that 97% of my readers used Kindle in some form. That's a LOT. So... I went back to being Amazon exclusive because it pays the bills. That said, many authors are pushing for "going wide" again, and are doing their part. Kobo has a subscription model now. And with things like Everand etc... it's doable. So... I'm planning on a series that I'll test out again and see. Not sure when, but it really is a problem.
A happy Kobo user here...the one I have is my second one, it's a Kobo Nia. My old one was still okay when I bought the new one so I formatted it and updated the software and put books on it for my teenager who is happily using it sometimes. I use my Nia daily for in bed reading, and when I commute and carry lots of stuff the Kobo will always fit in my bag while a book sometimes is too big. I use the Calibre software to catalog my e-books and send my books to my Kobo via Calibre. For library books (I'min The Netherlands) and NetGalley books I use Adobe Digital Editions to transfer the books to my Kobo.
I’ve been a Kindle user since my wife bought me one for our anniversary last year. I’m in my 50’s so after a lifetime of computer screens, my eyes aren’t great. I used to drive to the library and get large print books weekly but they are heavy and not as much selection. Plus with gas prices and time I was going less to get books. Cue in my lovely spouse and she bought a kindle on sale and my life changed! She showed me how to do three things on the kindle. 1. Make the font bigger 2. How to download books either on KU or buy them. 3. Adjust the lighting. Which I rarely do. I’m in heaven! A device I don’t need to know everything about to make it do what I want. Now I can find a ton of books and have a big font size. Great video comparison! I live in the US so if I can figure out the library card thing on kindle, maybe I’ll try it. I don’t mind giving Amazon money for the convenance. I’ll have to check out your previous bookmas videos. Do you make KU recommendations?
I haven't been interested in an eReader, but the more physical books I buy the less space I have... because of this, I bought the kobo clara colour and I've actually been enjoying it. It is extremely light and easy to hold. It's also user-friendly.
I started reading kindle books on my phone on the free app. I found the screen created a ton of eye strain. A little over a year ago i got a kindle that has a screen that reads most like a paper book and my eye strain is amazingly lessened. It has helped so much.
I have had a Kindle Oasis for years, and I love it! The screen is not bright, but does adjust the light a little bit, so I don't get any glares. That has always been a big plus for me.
My husband didn’t like his Kindle so he gave it to me. Enjoying it so far as an option. Sometimes I accidentally touch the screen it turns the page. Thanks for the information on the Kobo. 😊
I have a Kindle Fire HD 10 Tablet - I never have a glare on my Tablet hardly at all. It all depends where you are reading at. Sometimes I will read using my Kindle App on my Phone - No Glare and I will read using my Phone at night when I am in bed. I will always be a Kindle user - I love Kindle - I can read on my Phone - My IPAD - Tablet. I get Kindle Unlimited as well. I read my Thick Books using my Kindle - I don’t have to hold a thick big book in my hands. Happy Reading ❤️🤗🙏☕️🔰❤️
I have the most recent kindle paperwhite so I can answer some questions. I have the basic and that works great for me. I don’t need color in my books because none of the books I read have color. It is very light compared to my older one I used to have. A lot of the cases also have holders in the back and I love that. The power button is on the top and the charger is USBc.
I have a kindle oasis, and 2 kobo readers (kobo color Clara and kobo sage). I love them all but a little disappointed that they discontinued the oasis. I appreciate the kobo readers because they have a more open system, so you can choose where you get your books from.
I read all my Libby books on my phone and yes I get distracted!! When notifications pop up I get lost and wind up scrolling. My husband has an older Kindle so I may start using that. That Kobo looks really nice though. Thank you for sharing the pros and cons of each.
The biggest plus for me with the Amazon Fire tablet is simply the price. I got my Fire 7 tablet on sale last year on Black Friday for $35 USD. Even without the sale it is usually around $60. It is far from a perfect device, but $60 is much more accessible than $135 for a Kindle Paperwhite or $130 for a Kobo Clara for a lot of people. I can’t lie, I would love to own a Kindle or a Kobo but for now my Fire tablet works just fine.
I’m kind of a hoarder, so I have a bunch of e-readers, including my Fire HD-8. I bought it specifically to be an e-reader. I side-loaded the Googleplay store onto it and that just opened up a world of difference in my reading experience. I put Libby and Kobo on it as well as the native Kindle app. I added a Matt screen protector and bought a cheep, folding Bluetooth keyboard for it to type my google docs. I purposely did not set up my email or add any distracting apps on it. . For less than a hundred bucks I have a killer little lightweight reading and writing machine that I can take with me everywhere and allows me to access whatever matériels I want on either the Amazon or Kobo platforms. For reading ANYTHING in color, I VASTLY prefer this device over any color e-ink device. I also have a Kobo Clara BW and an older Paperwhite. I am likely to get the newest Paperwhite In the near future,
Chantel this is exactly what I needed, thank you!!! I have been considering getting an e-reader and I am the same as you, I prefer physical and 'historically' (for me) e-reading is not something I like. But it would be so useful for (hopefully!!) saving space?? 😅 Also for travel too, but I don't do much of that! 😂
Chantel, your video is timely as I am considering my next eReader. My Kindle is so old that Amazon no longer allows me to download new books. Instead, I have to download to my laptop then use Amazon's Content Manager to let my Kindle "know" that it has a new readable book. My Kindle does have page-turning buttons though ON BOTH SIDES which I find very convenient. I have never experienced an eReader that I would tap the screen to change pages. I have not decided if tapping a button is superior to tapping the screen. It seems to me that a tap is a tap. I'd appreciate comments on my "tap versus tap" quandry.
With the Kobo I have you can tap the screen or the buttons. I like the buttons just because the grip is nice and my thumb is already sitting on the button so I don't have to move my finger to turn the page, which can be nice if you are in a position that is hard to move from.
@@ChantelReadsAllDay I appreciate your quick reply. Of a dozen or so Kobo videos I have watched, no one ever mentioned there was an option to tap the screen as well as the buttons. Thanks!
There are free library cards that you can get for Libby that work in most countries. You have to look up which ones but there are quite a few with a vast selection. This applies to those in the US that want to expand their library options as well. You have to log into whatever library you are borrowing from for it to sync to the kobo but free is usually a little extra work. I have had no troubles and am unbothered by switching libraries as needed.
Been a kindle user since they released the first ever paperwhite. Only decided to get the Kobo Clara Color because Amazon didn’t release kindle colorsoft in New Zealand. Owned the Clara for 2 weeks now. Only picked it up twice, it freeze on me a couple of times, it doesn’t respond as well as my current Paperwhite 2021. Sticking with Kindle Paperwhite 😊
To get your Kindle books on your husband's Kindle you can reset it and load your account on it. When you return it do the same to put his account back on it.
Yes, that would totally work, I just wanted to also make sure the Kindle was available to him if he wanted to be reading books from his account at the same time. I felt bad enough for using it. 😬
I used to stand for kindle until I became aware of their shadey practices and predatoru eco system. So, I switched to Kobo. I'm happy here! The issue is, the indie books I like are mostly found on Amazon. So, while I would like to cut ties with Amazon completely, I cant. Thankfully, Kobo is catching up. 🎉
I really need to get a new e-reader at some point, and you might have sold me on the Kobo. I only have a Nook from Barnes and Noble that is about 10 years old. It still works, but the battery life is abysmal, so I usually end up using my phone and get so distracted! I used to read primarily physical books, but that's gotten pretty much impossible with two small kids and trying to hold them while I read 😂
I use a Kindle Fire. I don't notice a glare, but I only use it inside. I also have it on sepia color. It would be nice to have page turning buttons. Overall, I'm happy with my tablet.
I cannot imagine not being able to get library books on my kindle-so annoying! 😩 Most of the books I read on kindle are via Libby, and same for my kids. Hopefully Amazon will get that fixed (I assume it’s Amazon and not Canada that’s the problem 😅).
Also the size of your amazon Fire tablet matters, the 7 inch is the best size in my opinion.and I love that it is in color, i just add a matte screen protector to mine.
I use my Samsung tablet with all the apos; Kindle, Libby, Everand and Audible. But not so much for out and about,. It's usually for at home use. My daughter has a Kindle Paperwhite which we chose because you can use it for Audible too. We do have some trouble getting the books onto the Kindle at times but that's probably user error.
I have 5 cards (London, Ontario has agreements with multiple other libraries) so I just try to only read one book at a time on the Kobo so that I'm not switching which library card is logged in until I'm finished the book and ready to move onto the next. From my research it looks like you cannot have multiple cards logged in, it seems they did an update and there is no longer a work around to do it @@ChantelReadsAllDay
The Kindle (which version is up to the buyer) is the only one that attaches to Libby from my libraries. If my Oasis dies I might go for the new color Kindle once they've gotten all the bugs out of it.

Your video came at the perfect time, Chantel! I'm really torn between my current Kindle Paperwhite and the Kobo Libra Colour I hoped would replace it. I really wanted a color e-reader but the Kobo seems underwhelming. I also had a bear of a time converting my ebooks to a Kobo-compatible format with editable line spacing and all that.
