  • This is a short video about shooting long exposures on a tripod at night with the new Leica SL3. Of course I show sample images and discuss them w.r.t. sharpness, colours, dynamic range and overall image quality. The lens I am using in this video is the Apo-Summicron-SL 35mm f/2.

    You do very informative and detailed reviews, many thanks. Are you planning on doing a Vario-Elmar-SL 100-400 review?

    Next time... Maybe do a comparison with the X2D-100c 🤔 would be very interesting!

    Great video! Did you compare to the SL2? What is your impression of the low-light performance comparison between the two?

    i am currently in Italy (Genoa) and i picked up my new SL3 the day i was flying out - I have had the sl2 for almost a year and there is such a difference in camera's. Granted, there is nothing wrong with the SL2 by any means, but the SL3 is seriously a game changer.

    What are the settings you used? I tried a city scape picture and when I increase the exposure I get a lot of noise

    Math, the Hasselblad X2D is still better right? In terms of color and dynamic range. Thanks.

      Hi Derrick, its kind of impossible to do a fair comparison between the X2D and the SL3. The concept underlying both cameras is completely different. I would guess, without ever having done a true comparison, that the X2D sensor is superior to the SL3 sensor. By size: for sure. By resolution: for sure. By dynamic range: at par. Color science: not so sure, HNCS is great but Leica's color science is great too. And the SL3 is the much more fungible tool for a variety of shooting situations. Since a lot of people keep asking about the X2D vs SL3 I should seriously consider a comparison but it will always be a "proxy" only since the camera systems are so massively different.

      @@mathphotographer Understood. I know it is hard to compare a FF and MF sensor. I think people are asking because the SL3 is priced close to X2D. Thanks 🙏

      @mathphotographer  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes its complicated, and the video will trigger the usual controversial discussion when making aperture, ISO and focal length comparable across different sensor sizes :) I know how to do it and did a very long very technical video in the past on that topic but then you get tons of questions and criticism as soon as you bring in the crop factor ... I am seriously considering nevertheless to "risk" such a comparison, will likely do it inside the studio to avoid changes in light.

    I finally completed the complete APO-Summicron-SL collection (until they release another one) when I found a 21mm in stock yesterday. I haven’t tried long exposures on the SL3 yet, but the focal range indicator in the mini lcd screen on the top of the SL2 was always handy.
    Has anyone turned off ibis for long exposure? I’ve never needed to with the SL2 so I hope that hasn’t changed.

      The 21mm Super-Apo-Summicron for SL is amazing, you will enjoy that lens big time! Its one of my most favorite lenses ever. To your question: on the SL2 and SL3 I never deactivate IBIS, even when the camera is on a tripod for long exposures. Never had any issues with keeping IBIS activated permanently.

    What is the purple vertical artifact at 8:42 on the right edge of frame?

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a really good question, something must have gone wrong in the video processing. Its not there later in the video in the 90sec exposure and its also not there in the 60sec exposure frame on my Macbook. Annoying. Definitely not something wrong with the camera :)

    Math, first of all, good to watch another GREAT video from your side.
    I was very pleased to see the RAW image cause I too, shoot rather 4 stops under exposed and open the shadows in post. ISO is applied gain so basically the camera does the same after taking the shot but this way you have control instead of the camera. Since the sensor is iso invariant and with the great dynamic range recovery is quite easy even with 4 stops under. However I choose Capture One to do the post editing and mainly for the Lightness slider besides the hdr sliders, cause that gives you better contole than the exposure slider. That brightness slider has a great algorithm and minds highlights and blacks when increasing the exposure.
    Also great to avoid chroma noise in the pure blacks.
    I think we are among the few who understand this and I am always glad I can share this with you.
    Rest me to thank you for sharing and wishing you a wonderful Easter holiday.🎉

      @mathphotographer  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Many thanks RS, great to hear from you. I fully agree on your points. And the SL3 makes the technique you describe very easy based on the high dynamic range, the ISO invariance and the dual ISO property which Leica confirmed in the Q&A at the SL3 event in Wetzlar when we asked the question. Have a great long Easter weekend!

    A7RV or SL3?

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depends on your appetite for complexity. Image quality of both cameras is likely at par. And what people choose and decide for depends on their affinity to either Sony's or Leica's color science. The Sony A7RV though is a much more complex camera in terms of menus, settings and features than the Leica SL3; see my fully tutorial on the Sony A7RV on my channel to get an impression on how complex the menu really is. The SL3 in contrast is very simple to operate and has a more minimalistic concept underlying.

    I feel like SL3 is taking a boring direction. Let's be real, you most likely would not be able to tell between a 48mp sl2 from 60mp sl3 in a blind test watched from a reasonable distance, or even 24mp sl2s from 60mp sl3. (from a video I ve seen comparing gfx100s vs a7siii, pros sometimes cannot even tell apart 12mp from 100mp for social media compressed images, digital files and prints)
    From physics we know that more MP is certainly more noise given that there's no major tech advancement so it's a double edge sword anyway. Leicas af issue mostly is software opptimization issue, it just gets confused a lot. I am curious what they can come up with, hopefully not another mp count upgrade for sl4.
    Also i wish they bring back the 4 button layout and gps module from original SL, i miss those so much for my SL2-s

      Some good points Ralph, as much as SL3 is tempting for me as an amateur photographer I will stay with my SL2-S. The 4 buttons on SL was nice, but I can not see it being implemented by Leica again.

      @@janfrosty3392 yeah, I agree

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I sold my SL2 bodies for the SL3 BUT KEPT my SL2-S Reporter because I want to have a 24MP-only SL-camera. Kind of for the same reasons you outlined. What really improved though with the SL3 is autofocus speed and accuracy. I will make a video on that topic next couple of weeks. The gain in autofocus speed from the SL2 and SL2-S to the SL3 is not fiction but real and true. A true upgrade and improvement you feel when shooting the camera. For me personally the autofocus upgrades are more important than higher MP count :)
