Leica SL3: POV Street Photography in Edinburgh

- In this week's video I take the new Leica SL3 with 50mm Summilux f/1.4 lens for a wander around a rainy Edinburgh looking for street photography images. I give a POV look at my day, showing what I'm looking for in my images and how I use my camera settings.
I shoot mostly in aperture priority mode, using auto focus with subject tracking. The camera is weather sealed so I'm not worried about the rain.
I also show how sometimes sitting down with a beer can be a good way of taking photos. And hey, if it's not, at least you've enjoyed a nice beer.

Andrew this has to the first ever, well produced and filmed POV. The image quality is superb, being able to see the settings perfectly and what you see in camera is spot on. Other youtube channels doing the same thing need to learn what this man is doing correctly. Well done and cheers from Australia!
That is some wonderfully high praise, right there! Thanks very much, I'm so glad you've enjoyed it. I sometimes wonder if this approach is too 'rough and ready'. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
Big fan of the POV photography vids and the addition of the arm bracket is an awesome touch. Kinda turns it into a first-person shooter game lol.
I really liked watching this POV. The set up really works!
What a fantastic video of the SL3. I was so nervous watching you shoot in the rain, but wow! Great test and usage of the camera!!
Thanks Joshua, really kind of you to say!
I like the one of the man looking out through the columns. I've got some in the same location. It's great to see another photographer's view of this fab city.
Thanks!
Nicely done. And having a pint while shooting - life is good!
I've gotta refuel somehow ;)
Great to see a fellow photographer owning their shooting style, not in an aggressive way, but in a neutral confident flow of thought. A mutual respect and some great photos there Andrew. Subbed!
Thanks so much, that's really nice to say! A pleasure to have you on board!
Instant Like just alone for Edinburgh
Thanks!
So many great shots! On a rainy day no less. Well done!
Thank you!
Isn't it just a joy, photographing people in Edinburgh on a rainy day, with an SL3 and the iconic 50mm.
That camera was made for you. Beautiful shots
I take it that this Leica is certainly a great piece of gear. But to me it is more Andrew‘s eye for good compositions and subjects than the camera no matter the brand.
Very kind!
I love this video especially in the rain. Please do more with the SL3. I subscribed.
A few questions I’m curious about: What mode did you prefer using for autofocus? I can’t tell if that was iAF, continuous, or some other kind of face detection or tracking mode? What kind of metering did you like to use? What’s your lens of choice for street photography here? I love the results.
Great Vid! Just in time! will be there with an SL3 over the weekend of the 20st, watch out Edinburgh 😉
Thanks! Good luck with your shots!
This is a brilliant video! I use the Z8 with 24-70 2.8 for street (but thinking about getting the SL3 and the 50 1.4).
This is luxury class and photos are superb if one can use the camera like you.
Very kind! The Z8 is a superb camera and you'll get superb images! You don't need the sl3 if you have a z8 and a good prime lens. Enjoy!
You are correct! It is very fast! Which Nikon Z prime would you recommend? 50mm 1.8, 35mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.2/85mm 1.2?@@AndrewLanxonPhotography
I'm not familiar with Nikon's lenses but I believe the 50mm 1.8 is much smaller and lighter than the (and cheaper!) than the 1.2 which would make it great for street photography so that would be what I'd get. I often use Canon's 50mm 1.8 on my R5 and it's superb and is much easier to use out and about than the 1.2 version. Just my opinion!
Thanks a lot! @@AndrewLanxonPhotography
Getting all these great shots while dealing with liveview and that phone apparatus in your face - impressive! Taking shutter drag shots with a pint is 150% my speed for sure lol.
As a M shooter, the fretless shooting through rain is making me pretty jealous. The focus hunt did remind me why I'm on the M though.
Great job. That IP54 rating is not joke!
It really came in handy on this shoot. It didn't stop raining once. I considered using an umbrella but then I thought I'd just see if the camera can handle it!
@@AndrewLanxonPhotographygot mine a week ago. After shooting with the Q2, M10 and now M11 I’m having a bit of a hard time getting used to heavier and bigger cameras again. I love the image and color straight out of camera better than on my M11.
Your video was awesome! I felt like I was right there
Thanks!
Great video Andrew, too many great pics to call just one!
Thank you so much!
Great video, fun to see it through the lens, so to speak, of the street photographer. Also, I've read multiple complaints about the shutter sound - maybe it's because I'm coming from Canon 1DxMk2, but the SL3 shutter sound is very nice and subdued.
I think it's an interesting for anyone to really complain about. It's not like it makes any difference in the images, it's purely subjective and I'm like you, I find it quite nice and subtle, not some massive "KERCHUNK" every time you click
Fantastic eye, subject and camera. I wish I had Edinburgh as a subject.
The beauty of shooting Nikon Z8 is that the camera profiles are taken into Lightroom as raw files i.e. the profile is applied on import. So raw+ jpeg is not necessary. If you shoot raw mono it will be imported in raw mono as you see it on the viewfinder. Of course you can always apply the standard colour profile in Lightroom retrospectively.
Another plus for Nikon with their fantastic camera profiles and colour science.
This is true of all Z cameras.
Thanks for the compliments! That does sound like a nice way of working but I've worked this way with all other cameras and i find it's a decent solution. I like the flexibility of being presented with a standard raw but seeing that BW jpeg for the original inspiration. I can then either convert the raw if I want, or work with it as a colour file. Or just use the jpeg, which I've done with many shots in this video as they look great almost sooc. Thanks for watching!
I work that way with my Ricoh. Dumb question but have you checked that Lightroom does not have camera raw matching profiles for Leica?
Just returning from Titagel, Cornwall. Shot all seascape in Nikon mono raw. It was sunny so mono was better option. But great to import the raw monos and have the option to convert back to colour.
Oh, I really loved your Edinburgh street photos. I'm Scottish but live in Dorchester, Dorset. Keep up the great vids.
Love the way you took the video in the rain. It convinces me I should consider the new SL3 over my SL2-S. I believe the slightly smaller dimensions and the lighter weight (200g is huge in a way) with also the tilt screen really make a difference? I also like the way you took the pics with longer exposures to enhance the sense of motions which is also something I’ve been experimenting as well. Well done and thank you.
Well done Andrew. If I am ever in Edinburgh, I would love to go on a photo walk with you.
Nice pictures. I don't dare to photograph strangers.
Such nice colors. Lots of post, or mostly straight out of camera?
Nice pics, very well done.
Thank you so much! Some post work, mostly just upping the contrast on some of the BW shots and some light colour toning on the colour images. They're not radically different from the raw files.
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography
Ah, thanks for the info.
No worries! Thanks for watching!
Andrew, great video and some awesome Street shots. You make it look so easy. I'll be visiting EDI in a month or so, so your tour (and pub stop) has given me some inspiration. One query I do have is there seems to be some (red) focus peaking going on as if you were using manual focus, yet you are using face detect AF. Wondering how you managed this?
Good video. I like your edited color & B&W images. Your color images have a slight vintage look. Is this your editing technique or was this mostly straightout of camera? 👍🏻
Thank you! I've applied some colour and exposure toning to get the final look which includes using a slightly faded, filmic effect using the curves tool.
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography well done you. 😉
Edinburgh seems like a great place for street photography.
It can be great! It can also be quite difficult sometimes. Depends on what you look for in street photography. I quite like photographing the bustle of the Fringe Festival (which I've done in another video) but I know photographers here who hate it.
Thanks Andrew. I enjoyed the walk and great candid shots. Did you encounter anyone who objected to the snatch?
I live in a city where nobody ever carries an umbrella. If it rains in the summer people just don’t walk around much. Do you ever get so tired of umbrellas and wish people would just leave them?
I do! But then I'm 6 foot 2 so I end up spending a lot of my time trying not to get the pointy bits of them in my eye as I'm walking around!
How are you liking the SL3. Interested in your focus mode as the camera is finding many people to focus on but always seems to pick the right one. Really nice shots.
So far I like it. The focus can be hit and miss and there were numerous shots I didn’t show in this video where it hadn’t got what I hoped. I had it set to face recognition as that was largely what I was going for in these images.
@@AndrewLanxonPhotographyI've had great success with face recognition with a single face in the frame - with the Q3 - it tends to get confused with many people in the frame. Tracking works well in these situations though.
You should get a stipend from the Department of Tourism. Really well done. Thanks.
Putting that IP54 rating to good use!
I'm glad it has it!
more please. please. :)
Nice pictures!
Thank you!
Nice shots. Did you find the lens big for street shooting? Some people say the cheaper 50 F2 ASPH is good for street shots because of its shorter length, lighter weight and faster AF.
I found it really big. And heavy. It took me by surprise how big it is tbh and I'd certainly want to use the smaller one if this were my regular camera. I often shoot with Canon's 'nifty fifty' 50mm 1.8 which feels like a tiny toy by comparison. It's great for nimble street work.
Hi Andrew, a great video! By the way, i have a queston, i wish to know how focus peaking (the red highlights) can be turned on or shown during the live view mode? as i know it is only shown in manual focus mode or palyback mode.
Thanks for watching! Focus peaking was simply something that could be turned on in the settings on the SL3 and was available in both manual and auto focus which I haven't seen on other cameras.
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography Thanks a lot for your information! I will try it on my SL3 how it can be turned on. Thanks again :)
Interesting photographs. Just a small comment, I think that with these very high megapixel cameras, it is less and less necessary to turn the camera into a portait position to photograph subjects that in all honesty do not equire half as much real state of the sensor. If you cropped the image from landscape to portrait you'd still end up with 30MP of data. To put that into perspective, this is as much MP as a Canon 5D MK IV had to offer in its glory days. I know that when I use my 6X7 film cameras the need for turning the camera into the awkward portrait position is less and less.
A very wise comment and it's something I have done for a few shots in this video. The colour image of the man in the brown cloak, for example, was a much wider horizontal shot that I recomposed and found it was still a great-looking image. For the others though I simply tried to get the shot that I 'saw' so if I knew it would look better as a portrait orientation (like the image of the man between the columns) I wanted to get as close to that image in camera as I could. Because it's just hand-held it doesn't feel at all awkward to turn the camera. If it were on a tripod and I'd need to fully recompose then I'd probably feel differently!
@@AndrewLanxonPhotographyI'm using the Q3 now and find I can get several shots from the one frame sometimes. You get so much to work with at 60 megapixels.
Yeah I do think there's probably a lot of scope for other compositions with cropping. There's a shot I did later in the video of a guy smoking with people in the foreground with umbrellas. I shot that knowing I wanted to crop in a lot to focus more on him and I'm really glad I had the resolution for it. I essentially needed a 100mm telephoto but only had a 50 so it worked well. Do you print images with these crops and if so do you still find you have enough detail?
@@AndrewLanxonPhotographyO have printed some and pit some on Facebook - the quality is insane even when using just a tiny part of the image. I think the SL3 has the same sensor as the Q3.
Great review in the rain 😅 How do You like the 50mm Summilux 1,4?
Thanks! It takes great images but it's very big and heavy. It's not my favourite for long street walks like this but I'd love to have it for portraits or things like that.
Great video and some superb images...very atmospheric. Did you use auto iso when shooting? Cheers. Ken
Thanks Ken! For the most part yes I used auto iso but I'd put a limit on it to not go over 1600. When I used slow shutter speeds for motion effects I used iso 50.
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography Thanks for the quick response.
Thanks!
really cool video. I was wondering how you manage the water on the front of the lens. I see you dont use a hood.
Thanks! Sadly it didn't come with a hood otherwise I would have used it. I mostly just tried to angle it down when not in use and regularly use my cloth to keep it dry!
Nice video!!! Were the photos you see treated post-production or are they as they were taken?
Very nice! What do you think of the summilux?
Do you use zone focus when doing street work? I use a little Sony A6000 with a 20mm lens, manually focus at about 3 meters, set it to F8 with auto ISO and snap away. I know that pretty much every more than a meter and a half away will be in focus and it gives me the freedom to react quickly. I do most street work in central London where things tend to be manic - thoughts?
Thanks Peter! I believe that's also a way that a lot of film shooters and/or rangefinder users work and get great results. It's definitely a technique I feel I should experiment with. That said, I like working with wider apertures on full frame cameras to get more separation between subject and background so shooting so stopped down at f8 would eliminate that. I can definitely imagine working that way for quite close up shots though, especially at wider angles (28mm probably) when i'm walking through London commuter crowds.
Looks like the camera is okay with all the rain👍. But I ask myself why Leica wasn’t able to give this premium camera a little bit more silent shutter. I know this is highly individual but personally I am not that fond of the shutter sound. Sounds a little bit like a stapler🤔.
Not something I even considered to be honest! I don't dislike the sound, personally. Maybe it sounds worse through the microphone I was using!
Man feel sorry for you guys living in that murky place. We don't realise how lucky we are in Perth, WA, it's blue skies here nearly every day of the year. Andrew, I'm new to your channel, may I ask what camera you usually use and will you buy this new Leica. These are unimaginably expensive here in Australia - it's just released here for just on 12K body only - oh boy!! I'll be sticking to my lovely Nikon Z's.
Oh we get some lovely days too! I also love the mood and drama that we get here with 'poor' weather. I usually use either a Canon R5, or for much of my street work I use a rather old Sony RX1R, which is a superb compact camera that takes lovely black and white images. The Leica is lovely to try, but it's way out of my budget and I don't think I'd even want to try and justify spending that kind of money when I can get great shots with cheaper gear!
spent time in Perth - nice weather - boring as hell! Give me a historic European city any day of the week.
Hi from Finland, is a proper way of saying "can i get a pint of ....." instead of (may i get a pint of ....) just wondering :) I do love your videos just had to ask, do to me having had too many pints currently :)
It's one of many ways to ask for one, as long as the pints keep coming!
8:07 perfect🎉🎉🎉
I have a question, I notice you are on AFS and yet there is focus peaking running. I thought it would only allow peaking when in manual focus?
It seemed to be on by default when I fired it up for the first time and as I'm shooting in a slightly awkward position because of the filming rig so having that extra visualisation on screen really helped.
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography Thanks for the reply. Just confirming, you were not using manual focus?
Correct, auto focus the whole time!
Why nobody uses viewfinder? Leica has the best of all time...
Great video. Were you in Glasgow on Friday 15/03?
I was not!
Anyone saying af is shit on sl3 should watch this.
Great video, what’s you preferred focal length for street
Thanks! I usually use 35mm. Sometimes a 50mm. I suppose a 43 would be an ideal sweet spot for me!
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography thanks for the reply 👍🏻
randomly drinking beer, while rain is pooring over his head 😅
What choice did I have :)
If the camera would be a gun it could be a 1st person shooter (a computer game genre - for those of you who are a bit older ...)
considering how much it cost...the auto focus seemed to spend a lot of time hunting...is this a leica thing or a raindrop on the lense thing...
Yeah it's not super quick and some shots missed entirely. The lens was kept clear but I have heard that that lens is quite slow.
And they say you should use a small camera and lens for street….😮
And they'd be right!
So you never get to use the view finder? Only ‘content creators’ shoot off the screen. Photography should be done through the OVF but I guess this set up is for the video. Really informative video none the less.. j
I thin I'd feel a little vulnerable carrying that camera around in an urban environment!!!
I'm sure you'd feel very safe in Edinburgh! Plus which, I had the wrist strap, just in case!
ha ha - maybe. not where I live (Swansea!!)@@AndrewLanxonPhotography
Yeah, it's dangerous enough walking around here just holding a cup of coffee.
Scotland seems to be still based on normality, whereas ‘England’ is a vile hell hole.
In Swansea thieves will even steal your farts in the hope of powering their Central-Heating system. @@duringthemeanwhilst
Did nobody ask you to delete the pictures? Where I live happens all the time.
Nope, not one. Most didn't notice. Don't know where you're based but in the UK it's totally legal to take pictures like this in public but I still try not to make anyone feel uncomfortable and there were plenty of shots I didn't take for that reason.
There are tricks one can use to prevent anyone from noticing that you are photographing them, have your camera slung over your shoulder using a strap, use your iPhone to view the subject while you are not facing the person you're photographing, your camera will be resting against your hip but you will be facing away from your subject, then use your iPhone touchscreen to make the exposure.
hi why do you focus manually?
Hi! I don't. Thanks for watching!
Aren’t you worried about how wet your camera got
Nope, it's weather sealed so it's fine.
@@AndrewLanxonPhotography sorry I asked the question before finishing the vlog where you mentioned it anyway. Thanks
No problem at all, thanks for watching!
And overpriced panyboy in a Leica chasis 😂 oh my!
