    The classic sleepover movies of my youth (I'm 25) were 'The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' and 'A Cinderella Story'. I had a DVD that had both movies on one disc and you better believe I brought it to every single sleepover as a kid!

    Just building on my thoughts from the previous video- public transport is honestly an amazing way of getting to know a new city! You get to just sit there and watch the city go by and see a lot more people than if you were sitting in a car.
    Also I vote podcast!

    These videos are kinda saving my life. Honestly. Sometimes I find them validating, other times challenging. And each end of the spectrum has its value. I'm so fucking lonely right now. Adulthood has been brutal to my relationships and the section about how you are finding community in Seattle simultaneously made me feel hopeful for the future and made me feel pressure to work for my social life. So powerful.

    So I’m friends with mostly locals in the city I moved to after college. Smaller cities tend to be like that. I love the ease of transportation, friendliness, and price of smaller cities but I think it’d be nice to meet like-minded “have to move away to grow” type people. Sometimes feel like I’m the only person not visiting my parents/ having a family obligation every weekend, or like I’m navigating life as opposed to building something. I’ve maintained an otherness lonely feeling, which is comforting in an I can do what I want without being judged way, but also keeps me feeling unsettled. Idk feeling the void deeply tonight

    literally get so excited when i see a new video from you! speaking of sleepovers: when i was young it would always be sleepover, aquamarine, those types of cute girly girl movies. and when i got to high school it would end up being some kind of campy horror film. also about podcasts vs twitch, i love podcasts but i find myself pulling twitch up more often. sometimes i like the livestream aspect more.

    The way you feel about Seattle is how I feel about Portland. I've lived in Portland 6 years and am still horny for it in a gross way. The trees, cute neighborhoods, granola quirky energy, vegan food, moss, rain, coffee, Victorian houses, art murals, view of mountains, river, bridges, etc. I've been going up to Seattle a couple times a year to visit friends since I moved here and I noticed this past couple years Seattle changed a lot bc of the tech there. It's gotten too bougie for me. I felt oddly poor and under-dressed last time I was in Capitol Hill, it was bizarre! But it seems your experience is much different.

    The use of the words oversharing and productivity brought me to your channel but I agree too. There's a value system taped lightly by those words but not entirely condensed by them. You create and get shit done and get vulnerable and share, and I love that and need more of that in my life. Like you said, those words are like disclaimers for those value systems and directions for your videos, but then the people who wanted that shit came on over instead of those who wouldn't want that.

    Ugh girlie I have been loving these vulnerability / true daily life blogs. My life is sort of mirroring yours right now but a few weeks late, I also just moved to a new city and am having a fragile and sorta rough time. I also just got my car towed today! Making new friends is hard and incredibly scary/vulnerable/self-consciousness-inducing, as is starting my new job. But it is *such* a relief to see I’m not the only one going through these things.
    I’m really loving this radical vulnerability, especially seeing it on TH-cam where the norm is to only show a curated, polished life. Normalize vulnerabilityTube!
    Pls keep this sweet sweet content coming, sharing tips for establishing yourself in a new city, career and workplace updates.. it’s all good.

  • @miam.4493

    Your videos make me want to create content. Like, actually talk about my day to day. I can't explain it, but I feel like for so long I grew up thinking that my voice wasn't important, that its kept me from 'daring to share'. You hit the nail on the head, there is this sort of censoring vibe, where people may only want to hear a level of what they frame as deep.
    Thanks for putting it out there

    BRO I FEEEEEL what you mean about gyms!! When I'm there, if I think too much about it, it really freaks me out!! Like all of us on these little machines forces to movement inside this little.building because we spend all day being stagnant and pushing our bodies for others!!

  • @omarafunitv
    @omarafunitv 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    So relatable. I question if I should be vulnerable online all the time, but I end up doing it anyway even if it’s cringey. I watch some of my youtube videos that I uploaded earlier this year and cringe, but whatever I was feeling in the moment when I recorded them was real and that’s what matters. It’s crazy that we collectively think being vulnerable is a revolutionary act when it should be the most natural thing. It’s what allows us to create real connections with people, it allows them to appreciate and love us. No matter what we do, there will always be people who won’t like us for whatever reason so we might as well be vulnerable so that “our people” could “find us”. Thank you for being vulnerable, it’s exactly why I enjoy watching your videos.
    P.S: Living for these long conversational videos! 👏🏼

    American society was designed to be super individualistic/superficial. It goes well with rugged capitalism, where it's designed with the ideas of 'weak vs strong.' Humans arent' designed like that, I think. I think we all need a sense of community.
    Also, I think the meaningfulness of productivity and other economic variables is a big generational difference. The Boomer and the generation after at least saw economic gains and wages that kept up with life so at least for them there was some reality to the idea that work/productivity can lead to a good life
    most of us now, in this generation, see declining wages, climate change, stagnation, and other fuckery and so we're all just like screw this, let's be happy, let's not work ourselves to death

    I'm only like a minute into the video BUT... I don't feel like I can be myself EVER in society. I don't feel like I can share my whole self with anyone besides my fiancee (and even then I'm scared he'll run away). Friends don't wanna hear it. I genuinely feel like people do not care about who I am as a person... Just whatever facade I can present to the world. They only care about how someone can improve their life. As soon as I bring something to the table that's anything other than positive it's over sharing and I'm just weak and seeking attention or whatever. It's insane.

    My friends and I watched SNICK at our sleepovers in the 90’s. I think it was Ren & Stimpy, All That, something else, and Are You Afraid Of The Dark? It was the best! Also, relatively new subscriber here, but I've really enjoyed your genuine take on moving to Seattle!

  • @digrood
    @digrood 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've lived in Seattle for basically a year now and the seattle freeze is VERY real. I've found that most people make friends via their workplace, and that is especially applicable to anyone that works in tech. I've found it basically impossible to meet people by chance, and you've got to really put in the effort. I think a lot of it has to do with the culture here, and people that are from here are generally more closed off than people in my home state. they're friendly once you get to know them, but that's after breaking down a ton off walls.

    It's interesting what you say about vulnerability online, because I get the opposite impression. I feel like right now vulnerability (both on youtube and in politics) is what the public is craving more than ever. I think this is also what's causing a lot of the increase in parasocial relationships we're seeing between creators and fans as well. Especially when you look at old school youtube, there used to be a clearer barrier between creator and audience (the creators made a certain product, whether a skit or an educational video) but now more people include personal aspects of their life in their content as well or make video diary type videos. Not saying its a good or bad thing, just a change I've noticed that comes with its own benefits and drawbacks.

    Re: Your question about transplants making friends with locals versus transplants...
    I'm an SF Bay Area transplant, have been for more than a decade, and all but like, two of my acquaintances are from here. I've met hundreds of folks who I consider close acquaintances, and my few actual "friends", none of whom are transplants.
    I also lived in Australia for a bit, I became besties with a transplant from a differenter different country, but aside from him all of my friends were at least Australian, although from all over Australia, not just Brisbane, where I was living.
    When I lived in Germany for a bit, aside from my classmates in my German class, who were from all OVER the place (and our teacher was a Romanian super-polyglot), all of my friends were German.
    Iunno, I just never saw the point in seeking out fellow U.S. transplants anywhere I've ever lived. Not that I have any problem with most folks from the U.S., I just want to experience the local culture in as many ways as possible. And when I moved to the SF Bay Area, I did it because it felt like coming HOME. Every time I've left and returned, it also felt like coming home. Folks here tend to view me as a local, because it's just a natural fit for me.

    I have always worked out effectively at home/outdoors and enjoy saving money on gyms BUT I would also join a gym if I moved to a new city bc I would want to meet other people who enjoy physical activity like rock climbing or Pilates or pole dance (lol my imaginary self) so I don’t blame you at all
