  • Dr. Brené Brown started her research on vulnerability, worthiness and shame six months before September 11, 2001, and says our culture has been marked by deep fear since then. That fear, she says, has now shifted from external events to the fear that we as individuals are simply not enough. Watch to find out why, Dr. Brown says, those two words lead us to shut down emotionally and spiritually. For more on #supersoulsunday, visit WatchOWN.tv/SSS

About the comments criticizing Oprah and Brene: Can we please stop the critical culture? This is what this is all about, and why we have so much shame. We are always in critical mode. I just want to say this as a plea for change. Thank you for your comments, and I know people are going to jump on me and say IM criticizing, but I just want to find a way and wish there was some way I could express that our primary mode in this culture is criticism of everything around us, and this is why so many people are in shame, awkward, and needing therapy to be vulnerable. We're all human, even Oprah, celebrities, and everyone. In fact they have so much courage for showing up in front of the world and expressing their creative work. Lets give each other space to be vulnerable with acceptance and love, and change our culture by changing our words.

It's interesting how since 9/11 and the escalation of fear in society, how all these catastrophic events are now taking place around the world. Our thoughts manifest out into the world and create our reality. Your thoughts are your reality! With that being said, with people holding that fear, mentally, physically, or both, it is no wonder such things are happening. Let's hold the sacred space of loving all that is. Create loving thoughts, reshaping them from fearful to lovingly pure. A throught with no judgment of oneself or outside of oneself is a loving thought. Let's just exist and be with that which was created specifically for us. This earth, our mission is love.
Love to all of you. I appreciate your soul... ♥

Dr, Brene Brown, you spoke about the very thing that I have recognized as being prevalent today. It is the "Scarcity Principle". There's not enough. That is the general consensus I have noticed in my interactions with people and what people say on TV. And it is especially strong in the Tea Party. And the Tea Party's scarcity principle is built on fear and that transfers to many people. So the fear is real to them.
An example of this is the;newscast about how people in Texas reacted when the government brought in women and children from Central America to house them while they decide what can be done. It was almost a riot. Those people were scared because they thought there wasn't enough. Enough food, enough space, enough clothing, etc.
But I believe in the abundance principle.I have faith (and I do not profess to be a Christian) that there is plenty. You have to make a leap of faith. You must open your heart and let it all in. No one can be excluded. Somehow we have to turn people around to the abundance of life Didn't Jesus feed 12 tribes with a few fish and loaves? I imagine that not all of those tribes liked each other. But because of the abundance faith Jesus had all ate and all were peaceful. He did not waste any time thinking about what he should do. He just did it.
My question is how do we prove to people that abundance works? How do we get them to not be afraid of absolutely everything? Terrified people are dangerous people because they believe there is not enough for them and their families. This is the cause of so many wars from real war as in Afghanistan to people fighting over who gets the last seat on the bus. How can we start an organization of abundance?
    Thanks, Dr. Em Crosby

It is true that we are scared of vulnerability and openness, that we carry a lot of shame and feelings of not being enough. But really, the reason for that is the ego, the idea that "we are and ought to be somebody". If we are nobody or another way to put it, if we are universals, there is no somebody to protect and thus no feeling of vulnerability. Life becomes a flow of experiences, witnessed and never condemned.

Did he fail? Of coarse not.
He only would have failed if he had given up! If he hadn't tried!
I learned that in grade school! And I know 'I might not be much but I'll share it with you, if you want!'
Perhaps not the most romantic proposal, but it was true, honest, humble and it worked just fine!

What do you do when you want to share your story with your whole heart, and there is no one there to hear it or care when you do? What happens when all the people who promised to be there for you are somehow stuck at there while you are here? I think the real problem is people expecting from people what can only be given by the highest power. Even knowing my spirit and soul are in the most growth they have ever been in, my body still longs for that physical hug and release that comes with it.

One belief is to create art. Much of art is created when we have pain or joy and no audience for it, nobody around to listen, so we offer it to the world. So, maybe write a song or a story. Paint a picture. Maybe the release will be good for you and later, food for someone else. When they hear or see it, they will say, "Whew. I'm NOT alone."
I know this probably doesn't offer much comfort, but. . maybe.

I would argue that this feeling of "scarcity" we are experiencing, which Brené refers to - this insecurity and fear - on both a micro/personal level and a macro/political/national/tribal level is rooted in the fact that we are depleting the Earth's natural resources. Human habits are causing entire species to go extinct. Even if you ignore environmental issues, for whatever reason, they are still impacting you.
If it's not our clean air, our healthy food, our fresh water - it's someone else's - other people's homes, animals' habitats. And we all feel it. It's either manifested in migration patterns as people get displaced due to climates change or wars over resources, or it's entire species getting wiped out.
We cannot help but feel it, at least instinctively. As humans, we have the intellect and the capacity to live live in a more environmentally sustainable way. We all need to wake up and call this what it is. It's easy to get caught up in our own insecurities and issues. But if we start living in a way that's more in harmony with the rest of life on our planet, we will all feel better just for doing the right thing.

Wow. I really resonate with this idea, and I think it relates to something else Brené has said about how we are all somehow linked spiritually and we feel each other's pain - or in this case - scarcity. Really interesting perspective!

On a side note, knowing the truth of who actually perpetrated the event which was 9/11, sets a person free from fear. The truth has a funny way of always surfacing. Hopefully it does and the history books correctly rewritten. It would destroy the credibility of our government, but would set free many citizens from a false fear and insecurity

I don’t think you should ever do this until you really get to know somebody. Too awful because a lot of people will not accept you if you tell who you really are too soon in some relationships.

I love some of her perspectives and she is stimulating but some are limited. For instance sharing details about others isnt always a betrayal. In fact it can be empathy as you cannot care for others unless you know what they are going through. The important factor is empathy and nonjudgmental feelings its not keeping secrets... but she has some good ideas.

The two words were "Not Enough". For me the words are: BETTER and SHOULD. When people say "You should be like this!" or "You should do and accomplish these things!" And if you don't then you are NOT GOOD ENOUGH! Also the "We are better than you" "We are better than them" Those ideas are damaging and harmful to humanity.

Human beings have been marked by fear since the beginning our species, and rightfully so, from a survival perspective. When you look back at the bloodbath that has been our history, plus all the plagues and other diseases, famine, etc. - and just the battle for basic survival in many cultures throughout history and even now - it would be remarkable if people hadn't developed a powerful fear response to the innate harshness of this material reality.
I think one of the worst consequences of this deep-seated fear that has “evolved” within humanity has been the subconscious creation of the dark side of religion, particularly the concept of sin. Talk about feelings of low self-esteem and unworthiness being taken to the nth degree!
So the next great challenge for mankind is to learn how to transcend all the “religion sickness” and other kinds of dark fears that have grown so strong within us (and the resulting emotional walls we have built inside ourselves in order to protect our vulnerable egos), by employing a spiritual practice to open ourselves up to a more generous and empathetic way of “being” toward each other as a species - which is what Super Soul Sunday is so good at helping more people do (at least for the people who are open to it). When you look at the state of the world today, it’s pretty clear we are still at the very early stages of this journey; but it is happening, slowly. Cheers.

You are so right. Human beings internalizing the danger outside of us, as a belief about ourselves being inadequate, is SO not new. And, of course, the invention of punishment religion(not exactly sure there's another kind) is, of course, an outgrowth of that belief. And yes--humanity's next great step is to learn to transcend our own darkness & become more empathetic & generous. You are right in everything you said.
And, because so much has been learned in the last 20+ years about brain functioning & mind training, many teachings, of many kinds & stripes, are now available to help us do that.

Religion Sickness and the concept of sin: I'm glad someone brought this up. I no longer subject myself to listening to doomsday prophets, not even out of curiosity. I think it is causing violence to the mind. None of us know the future. The other thing I don't do is listen to, endure or discuss what I call The Dark Trinity: sin, evil and Satan. I think many people have already been through enough trauma, and I for one don't find healing by keeping these concepts in my head. My spirituality is bigger than that. It may exist, I'm not debating it. But I choose not to allow it to rent space in my heart and soul, which are precious and need love and caring.

When you look at it deeply enough you'll see how companies and organisations capitalise on it with subliminal messaging!
If we can embrace ourselves with all our perceived flaws and imperfections and the ability to fully lean into and embrace life we wouldn't need all the external bs to become our comfort blanket and validate us because we'd be able to do that for ourselves.
