  • Improvement to factory door seals. Works on all makes and models, not just Ford trucks. Use latex or silicon tubing. 3/8th inch outer diameter with 1/16th inch wall thickness. Links below:
    10 Feet 3/8 Black Latex Tubing: amzn.to/2rICDBc
    50 Feet 3/8 Black Latex Tubing: amzn.to/2xZWL3Q
    Smaller diameter 50 feet 5/16 Black Latex Tubing: amzn.to/2uyr68s
    Silicone Spray: amzn.to/2rtvR1g
    Fish Tape Tool: amzn.to/2tnmYVi
    UPDATE October 2016: The seals and tubing still work like new. They softened up just a bit over the years but still close tightly. No wind noise or door rattling six years later. This is a great modification for any vehicle with weak door seals.

    Long term update. I'm selling the truck in a couple of weeks and wanted to follow-up. The tubing and seal really held up great. They feel and work like new even six years later. No wear or damage to the factory seal and no degradation of the silicone tube inside. This is really a great modification for any vehicle with weak door seals. Why the factories don't make them like this to begin with is a mystery to me.

    Just did this other day. It works well 40' was plenty to do all four doors. I laid mine as flat and as straight as i could get it. The electric fish slid through, some tough spots going in. Then I used electric tape to hold it on. I didn't use any lube at all. I had wife hold back on the tubing a little which made it shrink up just a little bit and it slid right through. I hope this helps others, but this guy deserves all the credit. Never would have thought of this solution.

    • @Twisted86
      @Twisted86 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Andrew Rumbold The only thing I wonder about is will this damage the seals overtime. If you have old seals you got nothing to lose but I would beware on doing this on new seals like his.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Twisted86 If you use latex or silicone tubing the OEM seals will be fine. People who use vinyl or other hard materials will have failures. Door seal rubber is very soft and pliable for a reason, so it conforms to the gap and seals out noise. The problem is the OEM seals are often just not substantial enough and they tend to collapse and fail. Adding a proper material for support actually helps longevity.

      @user-uh5wr2fv1m 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Twisted86, why worry about your new seal getting damaged if it's causing whistling or rattling after all? What have you got to lose anyway? Besides, the latex tube runs through the door seal central tube and they're all compressible, and as the video publisher updated after six years everything is working great. So no need to worry.

    Did this today. Worked great. Only tubing I could get locally was clear but it worked just the same. One comment - 2 door standard cab uses 14 feet per door opening, not 10 feet. Could not believe the difference it made. Truck was incredibly quiet. 2009 F250 4x4 with 139K. I installed these by myself. It would have been easier with a super assistant like Megan.

    I just found your channel through one of the diesel forums while researching the Titan 50 gallon tank, great content and vids !
    Thank you for a ton of very informative vids.
    I just purchased a 2014 F-250 with the 6.7 and that 26 gallon tank is driving me nuts, my last 3 F-150's had 36 gallon tanks and I'm in capacity withdrawal.
    Happy to find this vid on weather seals, I hate wind noise and being able to quiet it down for the 70-80mph trips down the freeway will be refreshing.
    Thank you.

      The truck is awesome straight off the line but there are some great improvements that can be made. Doing the door seals mod is just a habit. All my Ford trucks have needed this. It helps with road noise but one of the best benefits is protecting from slams.

  • @AussieDors
    @AussieDors 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is great. Interestingly I found this video after hearing more wind noise in wife's Nissan Quest. I went to see if the channel was there on the vehicle only to find that there was already some latex tubing installed at the joint. After closer inspection it was only about 3 inches long to help keep the seams together. I have ordered the tubing and silicon spray.
    Looking forward to completing this. Thank you!

    Worked great on my truck. I had several squeaks. If you keep the seals pulled tight when pulling the tube through its a lot easier.

  • @EpicCowlick
    @EpicCowlick  12 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    3/8th inch outer diameter tubing and 1/16th wall thickness. This is common surgical tubing size. Anything thicker will be too stiff and it will be near impossible to close the doors. Most people who do this mod make comments that it takes more force to close the doors but it "settles in" a bit over a couple of weeks. Bottom line is that the door seal is tighter resulting in no rattles and less sound coming though from the outside.

    When I was younger I fixed a door rattle issue on my Hondas by putting a 1 inch piece of low profile door seal in the top corner where the door bump hits the frame above the window.
    It also gave the cars that nice sound when closing.

    Thank you for sharing: I am currently troubleshooting a water leak flowing into my passenger space; I have done a lot more DIY work than I thought I would considering my lack of mechanical skills and tools. I already removed the trim panels, the back seat and pulled back the carpet. I just started looking at the weatherstripping for maintenance and/or replacement. I will watch your video a few more times and consider attempting this upgrade. Thank you

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This seal upgrade would help if water is getting past the door seal. I watched a guy duct tape the door completely to the truck trying to track down a leak. His problem ended up being a sunroof drain that had become disconnected.

    It's just a matter of time until your door seals harden to the shape of the door. It's done this on all my Fords for years. Matter of preference and I do it even when the truck is new. I just like having a more substantial seal to keep the rattling and door banging away. It's hard to notice over time though until three years from now you do the door seal mod and wonder how in the world you lived with all that noise.

  • @EpicCowlick
    @EpicCowlick  14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @unkydon - 3/8 inch outer diameter tubing. It's the most common size. Any yes, it will help your Excursion. I had a 99 Expedition and a 2000 Excursion that received this mod. Don't forget to do the back doors on the Excursion also.

    @rap2454 I used 3/8ths outer diameter tubing. It is plenty big enough and will make the doors tight. Half inch tubing would be way too large.

  • @EpicCowlick
    @EpicCowlick  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @docsol01 It was a generic silicone spray. Worked great.

  • @EpicCowlick
    @EpicCowlick  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Not sure if surfaddict is going to reply but I'd recommend against anything more stout than the 3/8 inch outer diameter with 1/16th wall thickness. That has been perfect for all the trucks I've used it on. Thicker would just be difficult to close and might put too much pressure on the striker latch.

  • @EpicCowlick
    @EpicCowlick  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I use a silicone spray lube. Works great.

  • @EpicCowlick
    @EpicCowlick  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @impalaman955 This would work on all types of door seals. Heck, do it on your screen door. Anything that just needs a little extra support. I'm not sure how fuel line hose would work though. That's pretty rigid. A door seal does need to flex quite a bit to work and if you use a hard hose inside, it may interfere with the door's regular operation.

  • @carlosabelha2814
    @carlosabelha2814 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep there's a difference in the door seal. In your video you show to put the tubing in the bigger cavity of the seal but on my door seal it only has one cavity not two like your video shows. It was worth a try anyways, I hate that wind noise when driving.

  • @EpicCowlick

    3/8 inch outer diameter tubing with 1/16th wall thickness.

    @snyken1 You can find it many places. Home Depot, Lowes, etc. If you search online you can find the tubing half the price. Try Amazon, Leisure Pro, etc. Search for 3/8th inch outer diameter with 1/16th inch wall thickness.

      I haven't done my 2017 F350 yet but I'm close. Getting tired of that floppy, wobbly OEM door seal. The only price we pay for tight door seals is the occasional "miss" when closing some times. It takes just a tad more force but that is the point after all.

    Nice video. 2017 Explorer Platinum has needed this mod on the front doors since it was new and we drove it off the lot. Just measured with a string and all 4 doors need approx 12'; i.e. a 50' roll should work. Also, I'm not exactly sure how the lower parts of the threshold trim come off as this vehicle is a bit more than just the threshold piece (it has a light in it also just in case when it's dark and you're getting out/in of the vehicle and have forgotten it's an Explorer). I have used some stick on home window weatherstripping thus far to temporarily quiet the wind noise (hillbilly fix) and may give this tube, permanent fix a try. If so, I'll try to remember to update this post with additional comments on what I encounter with this install on a 2017 Explorer. Thanks again EpicCowlick for the original video.

    Did you use 1/8" or or 1/16" wall tubing? From the vid it looks like 1/16" wall but I figured I would ask. I am going to order some out of McMaster. Thanks in Advance.

      It should work for well for you. You'll probably have the same experience as most folks being that you haven't realized how sloppy, loose and noisy the doors are now. After the mod, peace and quiet will return to your life!

    During the install you used the 3/8” O.D tubing. What is the 5/16” tubing for ? Thanks.

    Want to fix the problem if this mod pulls down the corner of your weather seal!?!
    I had some problems because the silicone tube stretched while installing and there was too much friction for it to relax back to the normal length; even after adding silicone lube through the little holes. The problem is the tension pulls the seal down at the corners and can allow wind or water into the cab.
    The solution is to use your hand pump from your brake bleeder kit! Connect the hand pump to one end of the silicone tube and have your helper pinch the other end. The pump evacuates the air in the tube, which collapses and reduces the friction allowing it to relax back to its normal length.

    Just about anywhere. Most expensive is Home Depot or Lowes. Cheapest is scuba or medical supply stores.

    Did this on 2004 Expedition with less than great results. The tubing stretches when pulled into the seal. This leaves tension in the seal that pulls the seal out of the door corners when reinstalled. Hope you have better results.

      This is true and a good tip is to kind of shake the seal with the tubing inside a little before cutting it off. That way the tension is removed and the tubing does not want to pull back on the seal.
