- HOMECOMING: 5 lions and 12 tigers rescued from Guatemala circuses make their great escape to freedom at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary in South Africa.
Following an 18-month operation to help enforce Guatemala’s ban on animal circuses, officials warned ADI to leave the country by 21 January, or risk losing them. Organising a flight like this normally takes weeks, but ADI was racing against time as flight after flight was blocked due to landing and security restrictions on flights from Guatemala. As the clock ran down, an escape route was secured through Mexico, Belgium, and Qatar.

At the time, no one realised that the animals escaped disaster, just a few weeks after they left Guatemala, the COVID-19 pandemic forced a lockdown, they could have been stranded. This really was the great escape.

I never tire of watching these rescue videos. . . ADI - you are a wonderful organization that I have so much respect for. You all work very hard to get these wild animals out of those places and into a better more natural environment for them to live, as they should be living. It is so very heart-warming to see these once confined, exploited wild animals being rescued and given back their lives to live how Mother Nature intended them to live. Goodness that was an epic operation and journey - and great video. Congratulations and thank you for all your hard work and the agencies and airlines that helped. The longest journey I've done was 18 hours of flights and train so I had so much empathy watching the beautiful cats step out all stiff from their 3 day journey. But I know it only gets better from here on in thanks to your teams wonderful care and attention. I look forward to your updates. Thanks again for all you do to give these abused cats the dignity and care they so rightfully deserve.
Wow, just wow. The male lion, the look in his eyes, as he looks at the surroundings, quiet, wind blowing his mane. I can only imagine!
In a time when we hear and see SO many distressing stories about animals being abused, this video from ADI proves that there are GOOD people out there who really do care about these lions and tigers welfare, unlike their handles in Guatemala who mistreated and abused them for 'family entertainment.' :( Truly awesome, inspiring work, ADI!!! : )

We are so thankful for the countries in Latin America that banned the use of animals/wild animals in circuses, which allowed us to rescue the animals and give them a second chance at a better life.
