September 14, 2023: Re-live those magical moments when Ruben flew from Armenia and stepped out onto grass and his African homeland at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary for the first time. The video from Qatar Airways Cargo - who made his journey to a new life possible - contains previously unseen footage from behind the scenes of the journey and of Ruben’s first day at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. Enjoy Ruben’s blissful face as catnip swirls around him, note the donkeys making an appearance behind Tim, and for ADI supporters, smile as Tanya tells the person filming to stop looking at her Tarzan! With huge thanks to Qatar Airways Cargo who specially scheduled a large aircraft to take Ruben from Armenia.

Thanks ADI for saving Ruben. Also, thanks to Qatar Airways for their kindness. Sad that he only lived for a few months after returning to his native home. However, those were in freedom with love and kindness surrounding him.
We need to get rid of all circuses using animals. Except for breeding programs, zoos need to become extinct. These beautiful animals need to be living without bars.

I’ve seen your videos before through The Dodo but I just found your TH-cam channel. Thank you for all you do for animals, wildlife and the planet as a whole. What you do is important and it matters.
May I ask why Ruben is so wobbly? Is he in pain? With time and rehabilitation will he likely improve and get stronger? I’m asking out of genuine curiosity so that I can be educated. I truly believe that ADI will do what is best for each animal they rescue. Thank you.

Ruben has spondylitis, an inflammatory disease which can cause bones to fuse, involves the spine (note that Ruben’s spine is arched), joints, tendons and ligaments. This is due to a combination of lifelong poor nutrition, confinement and lack of exercise. This is why he stumbles, especially when turning, although he has progressed in the short time since he arrived.

It seems Ruben has severe arthritis in his hips. Can that be treated?
Ruben has difficulty walking due to spondylitis, an inflammatory disease which can cause bones to fuse, involving the spine, joints, tendons and ligaments. This is why he stumbles, especially when turning. This is due to a combination of lifelong poor nutrition, confinement, and lack of exercise. He receives supplements, vitamins and minerals to support his body.

Whether or not Ruben can have a companion inside his habitat depends on circumstances, how he progresses, his level of fitness, and luck - such as if a suitable companion arrived, like an older, sterilized female. Introducing lions is a long and careful process, living alongside each other with a fence in between. For now, like many of the males, Ruben is happy in his own space with companions across the road he can communicate with: brothers Coco and Chino, Kesari the male from Pretoria Zoo, and closest to him, Rey and Simba from Peru.
