Treated more like mature adults. However you do have a higher chance of seeing combat with grunts than any specialized unit because you can deploy 3 or more times in a span of 4 years. It takes a solid 5-6 year enlistment to deploy 1 time in a special group. That's why recon, SF and Seal contacts start at 6 years. A lot of training. Unless you are a grunt, ranger, army infantry you won't deploy (longer than 10 months) more than once. Unless we are at war or they need a skill set you have on another team getting ready to deploy. As an armor head, it bummed me out to see the Marines phase out tanks. That being said, their reasons are both valid and understandable.

    • @smithnwesson990
      @smithnwesson990 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I still think the Marines are making a mistake. Should they decrease the amount of tanks and artillery? Yes. But get rid of it? Hell no. They should still keep a few hundred tanks and artillery pieces as it has shown it's effectiveness in modern warfare

    • @evanulven8249
      @evanulven8249 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@smithnwesson990 I can see where you're coming from, but one of the big drives behind the USMC completely dumping it's organic MBT and Artillery capacity is the war in Ukraine. This is important because the Ukrainians are proving, in combat conditions and with training and equipment not at US Military standards, just how dangerous and capable low-level drone and/or indigenous population support is. It is no longer partisans with rifles and knowledge, it's all about the internet, smartphones, and Amazon. Can you imagine trying to land an amphibious heavy force when nine out of ten civilians that can see beach posting pictures and videos of the incursion to Reddit in real-time? Followed by swarms of flying $100 Radio Shack RC toys carrying a ten-pound HE-Frag charge that can respond infinitely faster than your forces can clear the beach, let alone the LZ? It would be a massacre, with little to no expenditure on the part of the defenders. Have your tanks and artillery throw all the thunder they can dream of, it will not matter worth a damn.
      Therefore, since getting stealth tech form the Brotherhood of NOD isn't a possibility, speed and flexibility is, quite literally, now the *ONLY* way to survive, let alone have a chance in hell of accomplishing a military objective.
      The modern battle space is quite literally the living nightmare of every military planner and strategist in the last eighty years. In terms of individual combat power, the single infantryman and their rifle has been surpassed by the $100 drone and a grenade, and the towed tube three miles away that now knows where you are to withing six to ten meters.

    I served as a Recon Marine for 5 years and discharged from active duty in 2019.
    The actual difference between the two is very minimal. Each major marine corps division (1st, 2nd, 3rd) has a Recon battalion. Each battalion typically has a Force company and an R/S Company (each with usually 3 platoons), as well as all the supporting units. R/S means reconnaissance and surveillance, and what this video calls “division recon”. Each platoon typically has 2-3 teams, and each team has anywhere from 5-8 guys.
    Force Recon is the company that focuses on direct action and VBSS. So they specialize on small scale raids and ship assaults.
    R/S or Amphibious Recon platoons (what this video called “division recon”) focuses on reconnaissance and surveillance. These platoons will focus on insertion/extract behind enemy lines to provide intel for the regular infantry guys. We typically learned advanced patrolling, counter-reconnaissance, and observation of enemy buildings, airfield, roads, etc You name it, we could watch it and provide details to the commanders. So this video got the roles mixed up.
    There’s not much difference to highlight other than the areas the platoons specialize in. They all go through bootcamp, infantry school, RTC (recon training company), BRPC, and BRC. Additionally, after BRC many go right to dive school, airborne, freefall, etc.
    Several years ago (meaning Iraq and Afghan times) Force Recon companies would select guys who’ve done at least one deployment or MEU. So historically, Force Recon typically had more “senior” guys, but that doesn’t mean the Amphib platoons were worse, or that all the “experienced” dudes go to force. Reconnaissance and surveillance is the bread and butter of Recon, hence the name, so all new guys usually get sent to the Amphib platoons to further improve the skills learned from BRC. Some stay in R/S teams and others want to switch to force. Once you did a deployment or MEU and proved your worth, you typically had the option to do either.
    But when I was in, they just grabbed guys at random for which company you went to: force platoon or amphib platoon. I’m guessing this was done due to the overall decreasing amount of service members in the military. Less marines = less recon marines.
    Hopefully this jumbled mess makes sense. If you have any questions or are looking to join I’ll do my best to help.

    Force Recon trains for and does shit that not one single SOCOM unit actually does; true Deep Reconnaissance. Force Recon Marines will operate very deep behind enemy lines with no friendly communications, no air support, nothing at all.
    That makes them the most badass MF'rs on the planet if you ask me. SOCOM units always has serious air assets on tap to bail their asses out, and they never go anywhere without some kind of communications, and drone surveillance.

    back in my day (80's and 90's) Force Recon functioned well IN advance of the MEF, behind enemy lines (beyond the cover of Naval gunfire), collecting intelligence to support the broader mission. There were other subsets of missions like wrangling the odd bad guy as well. Our mission was not to necessarily engage the target, but to get eyes on, and return the intel to the MEF without giving away our position (I was a DPR Marine, not DA). If you were firing your weapon, it was a sure sign that you failed your mission objective...completely. This sound boring to those who have never done it, but the pucker factor to operating so far behind the lines is high, and it takes a special kind of personality to do it properly. Training is tough, and the hours are long...but nothing beats Force Recon!

      There is still a big difference in training between the two. Along with Force will get used as QRF for DEVGRU and DELTA a lot more. Iraq changed a lot about how all specialized infantry from Ranger, Delta, SEALS, Force and Recon do their jobs what they do. Force is still trained to operate 10klicks or more from the Battalion. Ultimately I think FR will eventually be fully disbanded unless they start using it like the Army does with Rangers as a stepping stone to SF but also having their own mission set.

While I appreciate how well trained and equipped these men are, together with their superior traits, I still tend to be more interested in the basic infantryman of the Army and Marines. Why? These men are the modern day Tyrannosauruses of our battlespaces. They know they’re going to have contact, sometimes massive contact, even facing combined arms against them yet they push on in the face of what they all must know is a 50/50 proposition as to whether they be going home in a body bag or with their sea bag, One of my best Marine buddies here in civilian life was a recon guy. But he started out in the FMF. Even he recently decried to me the sudden mania of many fans in our special units. Frankly, I wish there was less information on these units at all. But, since I know many people will reflexively go into high dudgeon about my point that we should not elevate our special units over our basic ground combatants. This is just my opinion. I think the mission sets for special operators and critical skills operators are, by definition, not meant or designed to take on hordes of enemy infantry, mechanized or not. To me, it takes just as much guts to know you’ll be facing similarly equipped numbers of enemy infantry at some point in a battle space as it does to get covertly inserted behind enemy lines for some black op. That is not to say that alone doesn’t take guts. It damn sure does, but those operators, unless tasked with direct action, are there to not be seen, heard or known or. But, when the enemy knows you’re coming and you’re heading to contact, that’s guts too people. This is true especially when our men don’t know how many enemy with what equipment they’re going up against. I know this channel does cover the infantry combatants, but my larger point was that these days, younger kids seem fascinated and drawn only to these special units-as if only that is honorable and noble. My answer is they are equally noble and steeped in honor.

      I have no idea what you’re talking about. Infantry doesn’t see Jack shit for combat anymore. They literally NEVER leave the wire. They stand patrol and let cyber and intelligence analysts do their things. If you wanna see combat you go Rangers 75th, point blank period. Not sure where you’re getting your info from but again infantry ain’t doing squat these days.
