The Greatest Closing Tracks in Hair Metal History

- In this video, Bryan from the Hair Band Basement and I run down what we think are the 20 greatest closing songs in Hair Metal History. We also discuss... an interesting way to get milk for your coffee. Bands included are Guns N Roses, Ratt, Van Halen, Queensryche, Def Leppard, Cinderella, Dokken, KISS, AC/DC, Tesla, Skid Row, Iron Maiden and more. Come along for the ride!
Queensryche 'Anybody Listening'
God, I love this show!!!
Being from the UK, I could only dream of being in the States in the 80s!
My fave closing track would be 'Wild in the Streets' off Slippery When Wet 🤘🏼
I damn near included "Wild in the Streets." I fuckin' love the Slippery album. Hey, man, thanks a ton for the kind words and for supporting what I do, I honestly appreciate it more than I can tell you...
The first song that popped in my head was “Stronger Now”, maybe one of the most beautiful songs written in this genre. I stuck to songs that either make me want to run through a wall or hit me firmly in the “feels”.
Trixter - On The Road Again (off the underrated “Hear”)
Stryper - Rock The Hell Out Of You (Against The Law)
Lillian Axe - Letters In The Rain (Love & War)
Hurricane - Smiles Like A Child (Slave To The Thrill)
Heavy Bones - Where The Living Is Easy (Self Titled)
Britny Fox - cover of Midnight Moses (Bite Down Hard)
Sweet FA - Southern Comfort (Stick To Your Guns)
The Scream - Can’t Catch Me (Let It Scream)
Tesla - Toke About It (Psychotic Supper)
And as much as I love Jani Lane, I really liked Warrant’s “Rockaholic” with Robert Mason in the fold and “The Last Straw” is a banger.
Great list, man. And, agreed, Rockaholic is a really solid album... easily the best of the post-Jani releases.
Dream Warriors - Dokken and this not even up for discussion.
Amen.
That's another great dokken song just on of many
Billy's Got A Gun - Def Leppard, Pyromania
Made my honorable mentions...
Mindcrime is my all-time favorite album. Every metal fan should experience it!
100% agree with you.
Workin' on it! ;--)
@@HairMetalGuru419 Get on that!!
Cannot disagree with that statement!
Great Show guys! My list includes many ballads but a lot of times they closed out the albums….
Ozzy - Shot in the Dark
King’s X - Silent Wind
Winger - Headed for a Heartbreak
Mr. Big - To Be With You
Love/Hate - Evil Twin
Queensryche - Anybody Listening?
Great White - Save Your Love
Bon Jovi - Wild in the Streets
Scorpions - Believe in Love
Extreme - Hole Hearted
Nice list. Evil Twin is a good choice. I LOVE Love/Hate!!
Great list. You're right... a ton of ballads close out albums... and I usually love 'em. Thanks for the kind words and for supporting what we do here, I really do appreciate it.
This is by far my favorite channel on TH-cam. Glad to also find the 80s Glam Metal Cast and HairBandBasement from here as well. I love all these closing tracks, but would add AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie and Night Prowler, Aerosmith - Home Tonight, Winger- Who's the One, and Headed For a Heartbreak, Extreme- Hole Hearted, Kix - Yeah Yeah Yeah, and Sex, Van Halen - On Fire, Beautiful Girls, and House of Pain, Cinderella - Back Home Again, Dokken - Til The Livin End. Honestly though all the tracks you both picked are amazing
Hey, man, thank you so much for the kind words... seriously, I really do appreciate it. I love all the bands you listed... might need to do a Part II. Thanks again for your support, Brother.
Kix Midnight Dynamite closes with Walkin Away. That song is a monster. It was the first song I ever heard from the band. When I heard that song for the first time my big swinging balls shriveled up too little peas.
My band had been playing around and we were doing pretty good as far as Local Bands go so when we had to chance to open for some East Coast band we never heard of before we jumped on it thinking our shit didn't stink. That was until we walked in on them mid-soundcheck playing that song.
In My Dreams was the Dokken video where they were playing in the rain. That song was probably their biggest hit and has my favorite George Lynch solo.
Yes!! That’s the damn song my crappy memory failed me on.
What about Breaking The Chain? always understood that to be their biggest hit. I only know that and Dream Warriors.
Good call, and, yes, probably their biggest hit.
I didn’t give myself time to put these songs in order so I’m just listing 10 songs that I know I like as fast as I can and I won’t choose a band twice.
1.Bon Jovi- wild in the streets
2. Junkyard- hands off
3. Kiss- war machine
4. Skid Row- wasted time
5. Black n Blue- stranger
6.Fastway-If you could see
7. GnR-Rocket Queen
8. Motley Crue-on with the show
9. Wildside- clock strikes
10. Bulletboys- F#9
Just a few others that I wanted to put on here
Motley Crue- danger
Slaughter- Do ya know
L.A Guns- I wanna be your man
Ratt- scene of the crime
Poison- Let me go to the show
Tesla- Before my eyes
Just want to thank you for doing a podcast like this that celebrates a great genre of music that I’ll always love and have a deep passion for. You guys came up with a lot of great picks. Keep up the great work Anthony
🤜🏼💥🤛🏼
DUDE YOUR LIST IS PERFECT! STRANGER by B-N-B is an all tie favorite....Rocket Queen, BAM! On With the Show....BAM! Wasted Time...yep! ....but Stranger really caught me off guard!
F#9 is a great tune! Wild In the Streets is a great tune to close Slippery. Hands Off is one I should have remembered…
Great fuckin' list, man. And thank you for the kind words.... seriously, I really do appreciate your support...
I miss Jani Lane so much. I met him 3 times all within a 6 month period and he was so cool and down to earth each time. I wish he could’ve got the proper help he needed. He was a talented and good guy that needed help but hopefully he’s in a better place. I seriously think he was more talented than most musicians of his era. Miss that guy
Completely agree, Brother. Amazing talent, tragic tale. Thanks for watching, man, I appreciate it.
Glad you brought up Ratt. I just saw Stephen Pearcy last month, and they played the entire Out of the Cellar album
Man, I'd love to see that album performed in its entirety. Cool shit. Hey, thanks for watching, I really appreciate it.
Cool episode guys! A few tasty ones I forgot that were closing tracks on albums - War Machine (Kiss) and Rocket Queen (GnR). For some reason I always thought War Machine was like 5th or 6th track on Creatures. And Rocket Queen? Hell yeah I remember hearing Appetite for Destruction the whole album the first time through and thinking It's So Easy was the best tune until I heard Rocket Queen and was just blown away by how cool that tune is.
I've gotta talk about Ozzy here for a second. While Ozzy isn't really hair metal, there's no doubt that his most "hair metal" album is The Ultimate Sin. The closing track on that album is Shot In The Dark. Who's idea was it to put this song last?! I mean, I love Ultimate Sin, but really - Shot In The Dark is obviously head and shoulders above the rest of the tracks. It would be like Van Halen putting Jump as the last track on 1984!
Some other closing tracks I really dig are: Time for Change (Motley Crue/Dr. Feelgood), Top Secret (Ratt/Detonator), and He's Back The Man Behind The Mask (Alice Cooper/Constrictor).
When it comes to Ratt, I think they missed their mark for releasing a ballad to launch them into the Motley Crue and Bon Jovi league. They really should have had a ballad on either Invasion of Your Privacy or Dancing Undercover. Dokken had Alone Again in 1984 and Crue had Home Sweet Home in 1985, and Bon Jovi with Wanted Dead or Alive in 1986. Ratt was just too late to the party in 1990 and honestly Detonator is such a killer album it's got great songs and great production, but I feel like people were over Ratt by that time.
Anyways - great episode once again. And I always love the humor in between and of course the cameos by Charley.
Rock on!
I forgot Shot In the Dark was the last song. I love that album and Jake E Lee. No idea how I forgot that one. Damn memory.
You're right about Ratt--they got into the ballad game way too late. If "Givin' Yourself Away" come out on Reach for the Sky it might blow up. Hey, thanks again for the kind words. Me and Charlie (and @HairBandBasement) really do appreciate it....
Time to pop in my earbuds and listen to some hair metal talk! I'll comment after I listen to the whole episode. Rock!
Thanks, Brother, for always supporting the channel. Seriously appreciate it.
I agree about the greatest concert I've been to was queensryche during the empire tour....a girl was hitting on me hard which never happens but I couldn't stop rocking out....mind-blowing concert!!!
Was she hot? jk! Thanks for watching, Brother.
Yet another episode of @hairmetalguru I am here for it ❤️🔥
Let's fuckin' go!
One band that I think is right up your alley is called Mud Slick and Keep Crawlin In The Mud. It's one of my favorite albums of all time. Just straight up in your face killer hard rock. You should check em out.
Man, I know this album came up on my TH-cam recommendations recently... I may have listened to a bit of it... I'll give it another whirl based on your recommendation... you'd better be right. ;-) jk Thanks a lot for watching, Brother.
Another awesome video, you 2 are a great combination.
I hope TH-cam pays you well for this video because the commercials are about every 10 minutes...
Hey, man, thank you so much for the kind words... really, I appreciate it. As far as $ goes, I hope they start paying me something here... and soon! haha. Thanks again.
As you ask to not suscribe or like! I just did it, fuckin love to listen to you guys! Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
Holy shit, someone from Chile watches this shit? Unreal. Hey, Brother, thank you so much for watching and supporting the channel... seriously, I appreciate it.
The ending of Rocket Queen made you want to start the album all over . I always liked Please Dear as closing to Faster Pussycats Wake Me . But I’ll go On With The Show , Motley Too Fast and What It Takes Aerosmith Pump .. Tyler destroys .. oh wait , Sad Theresa on Warrants Dog ..
All of these are great choices... and if I hadn't picked "Stronger Now," I was going to pick Sad Theresa...
@@HairMetalGuru419 I was always told Sad Theresa was early unsigned Warrant and sat on shelves through Dirty Rotten and Cherry , which always made it special
for me . I was at a bar in Kemah Texas , right after Jani was found , I played it like 5 times that night .
Great show as always! I agree with many of those, even the honorable mentions. But Clock Strikes Twelve and Anybody Listening are my favorites.
Show idea: Your favorite hair metal lyric.
I must agree with you under lock And key is my favorite, the video in the rain is IN MY DREAMS, BUT I AM TELLING YOU lightning strikes again 2008 is a fantastic album from start to finish it is definitely in my top 4 for dokken albums
Another great video keep on with these amazing videos. 15 year old Hair fan here love this channel.🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Holy balls, teenagers are watching this shit? That's the coolest thing ever, to be honest. Thanks a lot man, great to hear there are some of the younger generation getting into this music... appreciate your support, Brother.
Another gift from the Guru. Look forward to these all the time!! 🤘🤘
Man, thank you so much for always supporting what I do here... seriously, it means a lot...
Rocket Queen automatically wins. It manages to cover so much musical and emotional ground in under 7 mins. Equal parts ballad and rocker. War Machine and Rock N Roll Ain't Noise Pollution should get honorable mentions, though.
Rocket Queen fuckin' rules.
Yes people from England are watching! Regards from Manchester, NW England!!
Manchester, England is in the house! That just blows my mind, man. Thanks a ton for watching, I absolutely appreciate it...
Anthony...thank you thank you for recommending Wildside Under The Influence!! That album kicks ass. I'm just sorry I missed it back in the day. "The Clock Strikes Twelve"
This is part of the reason I started this channel! Love that you are into the Wildside album... I fuckin' worship that thing. Really appreciate you supporting what I do, man.
Another great video! Excellent choices. Great job! 🔥🤘🏻🎸
Thanks, Brother, I really appreciate it! Seriously...
Great video boys !
Much appreciated, my man, seriously.

The video contents getting better & better. Love it. Btw, when will we get an exclusive episode on Pearcy & Fred band 'Arcade'? I love their debut.
That's actually a good idea--I haven't ventured into talking about singular albums, but that's something I will definitely think about... and that Arcade debut is criminally underrated. Hey, Brother, thanks a lot for supporting what I do here, I really appreciate it.
GET OFF by Dirty Looks!!!! Thank u thank u thank u for that! My Favorite dirty looks songs: Get Off, Get It Right and Dead Movie Star. Although, they r amongst my favorite all time bands. Thank u for getting them out there!
Man just found your channel! it's awesome! I'm a huge fan of Hair,Glam Metal! I talk about the records I get about that genre on my channel. Rock On!🤘🤘
Back for the Attack went Platinum and was Dokken’s highest charting album at #13. They were at their peak when they broke up doing the Monsters of Rock tour with Van Halen and Metallica.
John Sykes has released multiple solo albums. Out of My Tree, Loveland, 20th Century, and Nuclear Cowboy (in 2000). If you’ve never heard John Sykes’: Nuclear Cowboy album, you’re missing out, it’s got some great songs.
Okay, I gotta check that out. I knew he had some releases, but, honestly, I haven't given them much of a listen. I'll try Nuclear Cowboy first. Thanks a lot for watching, man.
I’m so gonna check this out!
@@HairBandBasement You guys gotta let me know what you think. Also, if you haven't checked it out, listen to his Bad Boy Live! album that came out in 2004. He does a great rendition of Still Of The Night. You get to hear him play his solo live, and his singing is pretty great.
Tell you a closing track that gets very overlooked but is awesome is Tora Tora's City of Kings off their excellent Wild America album
Great song! Just listened to it a couple days ago. Thanks for watchin', my man.
That is an awesome song!!
Cinderella - Hot & Bothered off Still Climbing. Take Me Back off Long Cold Winter. Livin’ For The Minute off Poisons Open Up And Say Ahh.
GREAT songs, Brother. I should have picked Hot and Bothered.
Poison Jazz from swallow this live.
Very interesting topic and discussion. I never really thought about this subject as I rarely listen to full albums past the first time. So I had to go through my collection and find some standout closing tracks. So, in no particular order----
Hole Hearted---- Extreme (Pornograffiti)
Heavy Duty/Defenders of the Faith----Judas Priest (Defenders of the Faith)
Headed for a Heartbreak----Winger (Winger)
Into the Woods----Electric Boys (Funk-o-Metal Carpet Ride)
And on the 8th Day----KISS (Lick It Up)
Slippin' Into Fiction----Steve Stevens (Atomic Playboys)
Sally Danced----Babylon A.D. (Babylon A.D.)
She Loves My Cock----Jackyl (Jackyl)
I do shit on Elder, but, yeah, I is a fairly solid solid.... good call. I understand what you're saying about KISS in the '80s, and you're point is very valid, as Gene definitely was sidetracked during that period. I guess my point besides Paul being fairly... cute... is that his voice also represented more about what the 80's were, with the party anthems and ballads, versus Gene's gruff vocals, which, for the record, I love. Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing and for the kind words, man, I really do appreciate it.
@@HairMetalGuru419 Paul's voice definitely fit the 80's style, and he was one of the best at it. Don't get me wrong, "Trial By Fire", "Burn Bitch Burn", and "Fits Like a Glove" are among my favorite KISS tracks, but I don't think they would have made good singles. Paul was definitely the right guy to get them through the 80's.
I would have to add "No Pain, No Gain" from Keel's Final Frontier album. Amazing album I just rediscovered and that song just leaves you wanting more when Ron Keel's scream ends it.
Lillian Axe letters in the rain is the best closing track
Great song!!!!
I fuckin' worship the Axe.
@@HairMetalGuru419 Axe is my favorite band. I guess because Steve Blaze is my favorite musician.
Can we get an episode focusing on hair, glam, sleaze metals finest ever drummers list going
Solid idea, let me think about that... I don't know if I have enough knowledge to do an episode like that without sounding like an idiot.... ;-)
Let's go dudes!!
Let's fuckin' go!
Riot- Road Racing’ is a killer closing track from Narita.
Gonna check that out now...
For the most part, prior to Appetite for Destruction most bands had musically followed in the footsteps of The New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Just with more and more leanings towards the looks of either New York Dolls or Judas Priest (Hair Metal) or the looks of Motorhead and the kid in the front row (Thrash). It wasn't until Appetite that the throwback to more of the Aerosmith, Rolling Stones really appeared both musically and visually.
Sure, there were lots of bands who blurred those lines, but it was Guns who broke big first. I know in my circle of musicians it was almost as big of a reset as the 91 reset. Most of the grunge bands were just rehashed Pre-NWOBHM hard rock with punk and pop senilities thrown in.
... And still the dissing of Love Bites continues!! What even is this!!!!!!!!!
“What even is this!!!!!!!”
I say that every time I hear that song.
Uggh, I know I liked it at some point, but, damn, it lost me around 1990.
VH - Humans Being for me
Great song
I feel exactly the same about the Adrenalize album. It felt already a bit dated upon it's release and the songs weren't as good as before. But Tear it Down is a killer.
Completely agree, Brother.
I miss the days were you couldn't skip tracks
Regarding Dokken, I think "Heaven Sent" was the next closest to breaking through. It briefly made it to Dial MTV's top 10 for a minute.
Def Leppard- Tear it down (Adrenalize) was definitely a great closer track. I know you guys suggested replacing Love Bites, but replacing Love and Affection would have been a much better choice as I thought that song was such a whimper compared to the rest of the album at the time.
Guns N' Roses- Rocket Queen (Appetite) was a great closer that finished the entire sound of one of the most 'complete' albums ever made.
Britney Fox- Hold On (Self Titled) was a great closer song as well.
Ozzy Osbourne- Shot In The Dark (Ultimate Sin) and Diary of a Madman (Diary of a Madman) were both killer tracks.
While 'technically' not a closer track, Warrant- Ode to Tipper Gore (Cherry Pie) was hilarious at the time.
As for Dokken- Back For the Attack, I believe the biggest song on that album was Burning Like a Flame. That's the song that got me into them.
Love the shoutout to The Whinery Dogs. Awesome band that I hope stays around now that Portnoy went back to Dream Theater.
Kiss- Unholy is literally my favorite Kiss song; even though I love a lot of their stuff from both singers.
Tear it Down is the last hard rockin banger on a terrible album and the original Hysteria version is even better more rough and heavy
Completely agree, man. Thanks for watching!
@HairMetalGuru419 It was on the Animal single, which was my favorite song at the time and the first single I ever bought. And I agree it's freakin' awesome! But when a B-side from one album is the best song on the next album, AND the new version is inferior to the old one, that says a lot about how much Def Leppard was struggling without Steve Clark.
Top of the world was a single and had a promotional video
I knew it! haha
Yup. It was the second single. Curse my shitty memory. Now I have to turn in my Van Halen card….
There were four music videos that aired on MTV. The first was “Poundcake”… the second was “Runaround”… the third was “Top of the World” and the last was “Right Now”.. I guess “Runaround” may not have been officially released in a single format but was definitely the second video to be released.
Whole Lotta Rosie, off Let there be Rock by AC/DC
I like "Heartbreak Station", but I have a cut down version I made, as some of the songs do drag a bit. Cutting those bits out makes the album more "on point".
This fire by dokken on LIGHTNING STRIKES AGAIN 2008 THIS IS A GREAT SONG IF YOU HAVEN'T HEARD IT FIND IT ON SPOTIFY AND LISTEN TO IT
Heres a topic. Hair Metal albums by non hair metal acts ala Alice Cooper Trash and Cher Heart of Stone.
Great fuckin' idea! It's in my list....
I think that's why dokken has become my favorite band over motley crue because I love everything they put out after they got back together except for shadowlife it has one good song but the rest of the albums I love
Rokken with Dokken! One of the best of the 80s. Dokken has many good albums after BFTA. Where is the Savatage love. They had some great ballads. Get your shit together. Lol
Quit telling me what to do! I got my Mama to tell me what to do! ;-) I need to dig in to Savatage, because outside of a few songs, I know very little about them. I know Metal Mike is a huge fan.
@@HairMetalGuru419 Well the Guru needs to brush up!!! 😆
Mr. Big Lean Into It. Last track To Be With You unless you got the japanese version, then last track was Love Makes You Strong
Rocket Queen 👸
Fuckin' great song.
You pronounced my name right 🤘🤘
Darren, holy shit, man, seriously, thank you so much! Honestly, I appreciate it more than I can tell you. --Guru
@@HairMetalGuru419 your welcome man, keep up the good work 🤘
la guns - i wanna be your man
motley - jailhouse rock/driftaway
poison -- bad to be good
kingdom come - stargazer
saigon kick - all around
stage dolls - summertime ladies
tesla - games people play
vain - ready
warrant - stronger now
Great list. The Stage Dolls are such an underrated band.
Great call on Stronger Now \m/ and Bryan beat me to Sail Away but including it anyways because it's too good not too. And if we are including (arguably) non-Hairmetal bands like AC/DC and QUEENSRYCYCHE, will do five and five LOL ;) ...
Non-Hairmetal (IMO)
OZZY OSBOURNE - Roads To Madness (No More Tears)
IRON MAIDEN - Only The Good Die Young (Seventh Son)
QUEENSRYCHE - Roads To Madness (Warning)
QUEENSRYCHE - Eyes Of A Stranger (Mindcrime)
QUEENSRYCHE - Anybody Listening (Empire)
(HM COVERDALE PAGE - Whisper A Prayer For The Dying (Cov/Page)
Hairmetal (IMO)
WHITE LION - Farewell To You (Mane Attraction)
BADLANDS - Seasons (Self-titled) (ignoring the bonus track)
TYKETTO - Sail Away (Don't Come Easy)
BEGGARS & THIEVES - Beggars & Thieves (Self-titled
RIVERDOGS - America (Self-titled)
(HM MAGNUM - Don't Wake The Lion (Wings Of Heaven))
He picked kiss of death on the album openers it has a great closing song dream warriors
IN NY DREAMS - Dokken
Great song
Does anybody remember the band johnny crash?
I agree midnight tornado is an amazing song but I love slave to the grind better
Hello Guru...Enjoy the channel. Ever listen to the release by Poets and Pornstars? It fits this genre, released in early 2000's and should have been huge [IMHO].
🤘🤘💪💪
“Closer to My Heart” was a ballad from “Invasion of your Privacy”…. Not that great of a song and fortunately wasn’t released as a single. Reach For The Sky’s ballad “I Want To Love You Tonight” was even worse.
You're right! I know that song, but, yeah, not the world's greatest ballad.
You could maybe do like a top 10 songs by female singers. And Marcie Free doesnt count😂
Holy shit, I almost spit out my coffee reading the Marcie Free comment.
@@HairMetalGuru419 oh, sorry about that brother.
The rotund guy considers Maiden to be hair metal? lol.
No, he doesn't. We've said numerous times in our videos that even though the channel is called Hair Metal Guru and I usually title the videos something related to hair metal, we often cover bands that we explicitly do NOT think are hair metal. AC/DC are not hair metal. Iron Maiden is not hair metal. It's probably my fault for being unclear about this, but most of my videos are all about hair metal, heavy metal, hard rock, and even AOR.
