2. If you took a shot every time I mispronounced Kaworu’s name you’d be dead within 10 minutes.
3. I realized I goofed in the very beginning of the video in the background footage but I realized that while the video was rendering and I’m not about to spend 8 hours rendering it again to fix a minor funny background error
4. In regards the sequel theory, every single major Evangelion wiki/fan site states they're different continuities and that the Rebuilds are meta sequels. Kaworu looping/being the same one in every continuity is something that's debated about so I'll give you that. But I'm going to trust the dudes at Evageeks and such as they're beyond obsessed with this franchise (not saying that in an insulting way, not even remotely, mad respect). The only way I'm gonna be convinced it's true is if Anno or some other director/writer on those films flat out confirms the theory in an interview or something. Regardless this isn't stopping you from having your headcannons or own theories.
5. I explained very nicely why I don't really talk about the rebuilds in the video and have said in the beginning and ending of the video that your opinions on the films are valid, just as mine are. I make content on things I like or find interesting. I don't like the Rebuilds or find them very interesting (outside of their godly OSTs). I've had several comments already act like I've personally attacked people because of my choice not to include them in the video. I'm sorry if I offended you or anything. I just wanted to talk about Evangelion stuff I found interesting, weird or cool. If you want an iceberg that contains a ton of stuff from the Rebuilds there was a three part iceberg series done by the youtuber Magneno CG. The theory is on point, considering it doesnt anwser any of the questions, tortures and kills most of the characters, gets even more phychological than the last two episodes, and the ending Is just...depressing.
Edit: also, after some time, fans started to like the ending of the series more than the movie, it tells basically the same story, but without telling you to go fvck yourself.
@@Jose-se9pu A bad ending for the characters isn't the same thing as a bad ending for the viewer. Eva fans should be very ok with a depressing psychological ending because that's already a main drive for the show and EoE pretty much confirmed that. If anythign i could see them getting mad over an ending that doesn't go there.
I saw people warming up to the original ending over time too but that's easier to do when you have a big flashy ending to choose as well.
Saying the fans, as in all of them like the original ending more than EoE now doesn't seem true at all, even people liking it usually still love EoE, it still evry high regarded everywhere.
Not to mention the ending isn't even that bad of an outcome, basically a more positive version of the devilman ending. We see everyone die but after that they are given a free choice of being reborn as a human or entering the Fanta hivemind basically, it's left open but it might as well have turned out that most characters got reborn

Rei's soul can't be in Unit-00. The book that was sold in theaters for End of Evangelion, better known as The Red Cross book, explicitly states that all three Rei share the same soul and that when she dies her soul moves into a new clone. It's why she remembers each of her past lives and why her personality changes between lives.

It's portions of her soul. Portions are lost with each death. One portion, the part that hates gendo is stuck inside 00, the part that loved/looked up to gendo was in rei2, rei3 was free of both. For some reason every single one has a love for shinji. Makes no sense but that's anime for you

@@nana-cq9mnLike the previous commenter said, Rei is a Yui clone, but not only that, Shinji is Gendo's son, and looks very much like him. Rei only takes an interest in Shinji after he rescues her from her plug. This mirrors how Gendo did the same thing in an earlier episode. Shinji demonstrates the same care to Rei as his father does, therefore Rei has a good reason to believe Shinji deserves her affection
it wasnt her whole soul it was a piece of it. when rei tries to reactivate with her eva in episode 5 it freaks out because it’s Rei I realizing she’s somewhere new and weird. Unit 00 even goes to attack ritsuko who is the mom of rei I killer.
Counter argument to the "They banged in EP 15 theory"
Remember that the Asuka that we see in 99% of the show isn´t the real Asuka, just a mask to hide her feelings. Asuka wanted to grow up and become a woman, her version to do it was doing it with someone, either Kaji or Shinji, but none of them where useful to complete "that task" for her. Kaji started dating Misato again, so accepting defeat wanted she kissed with Shinji expecting for things to escalate, but Shinji didn´t do it.
That´s why Asuka started becoming more angrier, her mask is falling, and that mask is everything for her. Sex to complete someone is aMisato thing, not Asuka´s
About the albino thing, I think it comes from the (false) stereotype that albinos have pink/red eyes. Truth be told most albinos (including myself) have brown eyes and if you see pink or red eyes you are actually seeing the blood vessels in the back of their eyes because their irises are clear. You are spot on about the poor eyesight thing though.
It was mentioned by the creator that they made Rei have red eyes and blue hair so it would be the opposite of Asuka, who has blue eyes and red hair.
There are multiple types of albinism that can happen in the animal kingdom (including humans), the pink eyes (blood vessels) are like those stereotypical lab rats or rabbits.

You know, I just finished the show recently and the thing that hurts almost as bad as actually watching it is the fact that it's so old that few people still talk about. The golden age is over and there's little new content on it and it's hard to find people to discuss and analyze it with.
With that in mind, I am very happy I came across this video. This was great, cheers!
In my college group chat there are a bunch of us who love Evangelion, and the cinema showings for 1.0+3.0 near me seem to be packed. That said, Eva is still in the weird purgatory between mainstream and niche.

Creator's wife was a born-again and lot of themes *deliberately* leaked into that work. Eiji Tsuburaya was a Christian independent from his wife, he actually casted Miko in Godzilla 1954, who received an award from Pope John Paul II
It's not even all random. Lilith, Adam, Tree of Life, Doors of Guff. These are all religious themes that drive the entire narrative of the plot. If you remove all the religious stuff on the grounds that it was just thrown in as an afterthought then the show literally falls apart because outside of Shinji's personal growth it's the basis of the entire narrative.
Sorta. A lot of this stuff is incredibly intuitive. So even if it was done for aesthetic purposes, what FELT RIGHT is actually predictable. And it's that feeling which transcends cultures and peoples.
The further you delve into the Enlightenment, which affected all cultures by now, the more parallels you find between Christian themes and human psychology. Basically, Christianity being so old and so close to science (in study), its natural evolution began to produce re-world relationships presented as Christian metaphors/individuals.
The symbology itself is so old it goes past the Egyptians and the Masons, like the cross. In reality, crosses for crucifixion are actually a T shape. But it evolved into the '+' shaped cross due to the psychological meaning of '+' which exists in all cultures: stability, bridging, strength, etc. Of course, a '+' is just a simplified version of a man standing with his arms out and his feet together, the 'T' pose as it's affectionately called.
The meme, 'T' pose to assert dominance, is actually ancient.
Halo's are the rising sun, crowning an individual with golden light. Trinities are the simplest stable relationship (rock, paper, scissors). All this is what people are referencing when they talk about sacred geometry, though it gets a bad rep from eccentrics who take it too far.
So even if people use the imagery because it 'looks cool' or whatever, the fact it looks cool is precisely because the meaning it has transcends culture.

The final 2 Eva episodes are genuinely the best episodes in any show in general, the writing is all over the place but it never feels out of place it feels realistic one time you think about yourself the next about the people you know what if all were different what if you were different or never existed it is just pure greatness in my opinion and truely shows how long writers freedom can take someone

@@langustajableczna I disagree Anno at the time of making the show was depressed I don’t think he wanted to have a ending of how he truly felt so he made something that was more uplifting. The problem with that was he built Shinji around himself and he tried to make shinji something he wasn’t. People complained and said it was bad and sent him death threats and that almost drove him to suicided. Than he got fed up and made end of Eva and didn’t hold back and poured his soul into it. I just think it is such a better ending since it isn’t fake Anno is deep in depression that he can’t get out of and he puts shinji in that same state which really hits hard since life isn’t always a good ending. But even still at the end shinji still has a chance to be a better person and get over his depression we just don’t know if he will and neither does anno know if he will get over his own. I could go on for hours why I love End of Evangelion (mainly Auskas storyline in it). I understand why someone enjoys the other endings better but for me personally this was my favorite by far

The live action Eva movies were going to be directed by Steven Spielberg, I'm pretty sure that's common knowledge. He actually talked about it in more than one interview... The concept art also has stamps from Studio WETA attached, who have a pretty crazy portfolio of things they worked on. Assuming we would have gotten that combination of assets, there's a chance this could have been a massive hit. I still find it unlikely and personally I'm not a fan of live action anime adaptation regardless, I think once something got a video adaptation of some sort, that should be it.
Given how bad live action adaptations of anime were given such a bad red at the time, I doubt that the movie would've flown over with audiences and critics
I feel like my favorite resolution to the eva series, is the manga based on the series. Yea it’s different, even some characters show sides of themselves not really seen in the show. But the way it handles EOE and it’s end makes it feel like a finale. Rather than something cyclical like other things would have you believe. Plus I like the somewhat more positive tone.
I agree, and the fourth Rebuild movie took some elements from it.

In some airings of Evangelion from 2003 in Argentina, a dubbed opening of Cruel Angel’s Thesis was used in Spanish. Nobody knows if the opening was archived, and no snippets or even images exist of this version online, which makes it hard to know if the dub even used a dubbed intro.
While there is a Spanish opening that could be from a dub, it’s not confirmed to be the lost Spanish intro, and may be a cover. This version can be heard on TH-cam.
Man i wish we had even more details about Evangelion 2 ( the game). It has some interesting scenarios such as the 18th one where it's unironically even more depressing than NGE or EoE.

Neon Genesis Evangelion nearly drove me to suicide.
Seeing Shinji suffering is like seeing myself suffer, because at one point in time I was almost exactly like him, especially back in 10th grade when I was bullied to the brink of suicide. I simply cannot tolerate watching Eva. I felt forced to relive my trauma upon viewing it. I’m deathly afraid of it. Twice I had a nightmare where I saw myself as Shinji choking Asuka and starting the Third Impact. I’ve been struggling with this newfound depression ever since.
I was obsessed with the series for over a year to try and outwit the isolation of the Coronavirus pandemic. It only increased the burden, and kept the memory of my friend’s recent suicide alive.
Watching the End of Evangelion was like peering into a broken mirror, and I was viewing the hell I would’ve put myself through had things turned out differently, had I decided to give up.
Sometimes I hate myself because I fail to appreciate what so many have claimed to idolize, and I beat myself further for failing to worship what they call praiseworthy, I forced myself to watch a show that reminded me of nothing but pain just so I wouldn’t be alone anymore, I was willing to sacrifice my individuality for some company amidst the isolation of the pandemic.
I sought emotional refuge in the Evangelion fandom on social media, hoping they’d understand me and provide me with answers that would grant me peace of mind. Instead, they downplayed my trauma, going so far as to spread a rumor of my past to shame me of my mental illness, spiraling me deeper into depression, which I’ve been struggling with for over a year now.
I just want Shinji to be happy, so this past self of mine can be laid to rest once more. I’m afraid to decouple myself from him after losing my friend to suicide, which Eva made me feel responsible for, especially when I saw Shinji kill Kaworu, of which I fail to understand how anyone can call it praiseworthy. Until then, I feel nothing else matters.
There’s a reason why I keep coming back to Evangelion; something that reminds me of nothing but pain.
I want to prove to myself I’m not crazy for feeling this way, that Evangelion really did force me to relive my trauma, that my depression is not just a figment of my imagination or another anime plot point. I want to feel that my fear and resentment towards Eva is justified.
But the fact I’m the only one I know in existence who’s been traumatized by an anime makes me feel like I really am crazy.
But finally, with 3.0+1.0 released, I can rest easy knowing that Shinji has finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel. Evangelion is finished, and I want it to remain that way.
But if things hadn’t turned out that way, I wouldn’t be here today.
You're not crazy for thinking an anime traumatized you. It's an insanely dark and disturbing anime with so many heavy topics there really should be a warning before watching it. I havent watched any of the movies but in my opinion the whole show is just a commentary and existential deep dive into the human consciousness. I think everyone is supposed to relate to shinji too, in some ways or others. Battling depression is so tough but I promise that you got this. You can do it man and just keep doing things that make you happy :)

Obviously if unit 0 indeed has Rei 1's soul it had been fragmented too, as Asuka's mom's soul was, and then the question could be what part of the soul was extracted (as it's theorized that unit 02's soul was the fragment of Kyoko's soul that loved Asuka), or even wether if that's a thing at all and soul fragmentation works more like blood or spinal fluid donation

I do remember hearing about the N64 Neon Genesis game from the UK's 64 Magazine.
It was only briefly mentioned and only released in Japan, I originally thought it was going to have a western release but after 2001 I had to consider the fact that if it weren't for Nintendo Region Locking their console, there was no way I was ever going to play that game.

When I was watching Devilman Crybaby I noticed the massive similarity to Evangelion with the red sea and the bleak ending,I should have guessed the franchise inspired Evangelion if a remastered story is so similar to another media

30 is not the 30th main line series game, it's called 30 because it's released on the 30th anniversary of the series.
Also fun fact: Anno being a MASSIVE mecha fan and a fan of the SRW series actually contributed to the some parts of Super Robot Wars F, where Eva debuted in the series, with artworks and also ideas involving how the story of Evangelion can play out in the game, one of them being that Bright Noa from the original Gundam anime should slap the bitch out of Shinji. And he liked the depiction of Eva in these games so much that in the Rebuild films he actually reused some of the ideas presented in namely the 3rd Super Robot Wars Alpha game.
Ok another fun fact. In the series there's a surprisingly consistency involving the Eva series and the Getter Robo series in almost all continuities. That being the Getter Rays can ignore the AT Fields generated by Angels and Evas. The reason varies between game to game but this fact paired up with the Getter Robots generally being very high damage dealing units makes them the perfect Angel/Eva busting characters.

Anyone else remember that big Eva-R fanfic? They always claimed to have some kind of seal of approval from the creator or the studio. Bunch of soundtrack and animation and stuff got made for it too. I kept thinking it was going to pop up, it felt like a big deal way back when.
Its so strange looking at all this 'stuff'. My big Evangelion phase was at a time when you just didn't get these kind of things in the UK. The only way to even watch it was to catch it at the right time on the equivalent of cable. My Dad video taped it for me not knowing what it was... I think I still have those VHS tapes.

I do think there's a bit of merit to EoE at least being a implicit response to the fan base at the time. The scene that appears directly following the third impact I feel is the most obv with it pointing towards escapism by fans.
Anno was depressed and freaking suicidal when he made that movie, and it shows.
i think that's more so relevant to general Otaku culture in Anno's view. iirc one of the many, many reasons at this point, that anno made the show was because the anime industry was gearing more towards "kawaii" culture and he wanted to make something that went against that. the..."goo" scene being a manifestation of Otaku's being drawn in by illusions of pretty women works pretty well. also regardless, i never thought of the scene like that. that's really interesting tbh

There are a few things to be said about Evangelion in Super Robot Wars.
Kaworu seems to be aware of the different continuities he has been in, as if he is the same person in the TV show, the movies, SRW F, SRW Alpha, SRW MX, SRW Z3 and so on.
There's a bonus objective to shoot down an angel in Alpha without the use of the Evangelions. If you accomplish it, Gendoh gets upset.
Instrumentality happens in Alpha 3. Ideon powers down in response to it, as if Ide, the gestalt consciousness powering the Ideon, is okay with the idea of humanity becoming one.
Anima doesn't really appear in SRW. Alpha 3 has the Type F equipment as an extra for Unit-01 and that's it.
V is the first game with Evangelion to get an official translation. It's relatively new and has a PC port that you can't buy outside of Asia. Pretty good entry, would recommend.

1:04:16 okay, I just watched this scene back and, in my opinion at least, it js HEAVILY implied that it’s Misato that killed Kaji. Who else would he be happy to see the way he’s shown? Scene hard cuts to Misato’s room where she’s sitting with head in hands as sirens blare? I get that Anno said it wasn’t her, but it feels heavily implied by the shots.
I mean I’m pretty sure Kaji knew he was gonna die and so he was just greeting his killer in a way he wouldn’t expect

Finally got around to watching this (to the end lol) after binge-watching the entire "cinematic" series (anime + rebuilds).
This was the first video I watched from your channel and you've certainly earned my sub.
Even though I did watch the Crunchyroll vid analyzing the "timeline" and multiverse, it was even more fascinating seeing you uncover even more things that particular video missed. I always knew how influential and groundbreaking Evangelion was but seeing how far the roots spread out in the industries of Japan/US over decades was quite something. Playing a broken record but I don't particularly like the rebuilds either due to their meandering aspects and disappointing creative changes, however, I still respect the production that went into it all around (killer soundtrack btw). Some takeaway for me is even though the premise and moral of the show's message are much simpler, it's still amazing diving into the rabbit hole and exploring creative liberty. Also, I agree with ANIMA deserving an anime adaptation as it's one of the most interesting renditions of the EVA "story" to date (Also EVA retake). Anything else (cough 3.0+1.11) is stagnant and another usage of the cash cow. Fantastic vid overall, it's been a while since I've been this encapsulated.

I can then say that Neon Genesis was also inspired by Super Mario Bros, the part where Shinji ate a Super Mushroom so he could grow big into his Eva Unit 01 form.
I'm kinda late to the party here, but I felt inclined to comment! For starters, awesome video! I really like how thorough you were. I recently just got back into Evangelion after kinda forgetting it's existence for awhile and I remembered why it's actually my favorite anime ever--also I love Iceberg videos because I'm a sucker for these sorts of fun facts/deep trivia. On the topic of the Rebuilds; I know some people have been crass in the comments about your opinion, personally I do like them but I understand why not everyone would, so to each their own at the end of the day. What I do disagree with is the disregard when it comes to the "Time Loop"/Sequel Theory. Obviously no grudge of course, at the end of the day Evangelion has that element of self-interpretation, but to me the Sequel Theory is pretty likely.
The final Rebuild movie goes out of it's way to connect itself to the original, such as Kaworu's seemingly existing familiarity with Shinji throughout all the films before even meeting him to Shinji even saying "I've been here before" in the final film when talking to Kaworu again towards the end. I don't think it's fair to say "The evidence for the theory has been debunked" when there's a decent chunk of evidence that wasn't even brought up here (Not a fault of you to be fair, this is a 2 hour long video covering many topics and you can only spend so much time on one before needing to move forward.) The other point I would mention is that the final Rebuild film does literally showcase footage from the original anime when Shinji is talking to Rei towards the end of the film as well; there's more to say on the matter but I don't even think I'm the best person to explain every aspect, and this has already ran pretty long already.

In preparation for the iceberg, I had to go back and rewatch the original series and The End of Evangelion. I wish I could go back in time so I can see what it was like to experience the most serial science fiction anime ever.

Great video! I saw your comment on my post, and I am the guy who made the hour and a half Angel's Ranked video. The video wasn't taken down because I used clips from the show; It was taken down because I had an amv intro that violated Khara's policy (as I learned first-hand). Lilin or humanity was ranked at #1 and Iruel was ranked at #2. My video also only included the 3rd and 7th angel from the rebuild movies. I was planning on remaking it later down the line, but I've had a lot of people come to me asking about it, so I'll make it right after I release the current video that I'm working on. This time I'm thinking about including the rebuild versions of Ramiel, Zeruel, and Sahaquiel. Very flattering to hear everyone talk about how good it was.

I really like this Iceberg as it didn’t just talk about general information, but also really obscure media as well I didn’t even know about. I’m a HUGE Evangelion fan and a lot of this stuff has been a blast from the past, so this one has been a lot of fun to watch. Also Rei my beloved really needs to have her own proper Game where she doesn’t hook up with her Kinda-Sorta-Son and doesn’t get groomed. My proper Rei Raising Project game would be a Shoujo-esque Reverse Harem game where you try to hook up Rei with a bunch of dudes around her age and go on silly little adventures with her. I think that would be neat.
I’m surprised Honkai Impact 3rd wasn’t mentioned. It’s a game that is heavily inspired by evangelion. They also had a colab with Eva at some point. Made by Mihoyo, who also created Genshin Impact which is more popular.
