- Today we find out who I can beat Pokemon Yellow with faster: Electabuzz or Magmar. These two Pokemon are clearly part of duo and they even have the same base stats in generation one. Who do you think will win the race?

Question: If you do a Jessie vs. James run, will you evolve their Pokemon, keep them as they are or perhaps start with fully evolved forms? And will you use Meowth for either or both of them?

A fun race in Johto could be Girafarig and Stantler. They're close on stats and show up in similar areas. Pretty sure Girafarig has the advantage with being Psychic but Stantler isn't bad either, so it'd be interesting
I believe Magmar can learn Thunderbolt? That definitely could’ve given him the edge and at least would’ve made him more consistent than using confuse ray. Great video I really enjoy these vs videos!

Honestly, growing up I never knew the spearow line was supposed to be the the midrange between the pidgey and doduo lines so I really want that comparison

To those who say Magmar I see where you're coming from and I'm even hoping Magmar wins. However with that said while both Magmar and Electabuzz will have their complications with Brock, Electabuzz having the capability to plow through Misty and maintain type advantage against Lorelei & Lance's Gyarados should help exponentially with its odds
I had a similar mindset. Electric is just a better type offensively, and defensively having only ground as a weakness. Brock is a challenge though. Yea fire isn’t good against rock, but at least onix and geodude have very low special, and fire moves can still hit. Idk when magmar learns it’s first fire move though if it learns ember early on maybe?
Edit: as soon as I finished writing this I saw that magmar started with ember 😆

The idea of Agatha's ghost Pokemon being the deceased Pokemon she had in the past is kind of amazing lore potential. Maybe she was the previous Poison Gym Leader, thus the Arbok and Golbat. She is replaced by Koga in the next generation too, so in a way it still checks out.

Wanted to see if I could do it. I can but it's incredibly unsustainable. I'm going to have to work constantly till Sunday to get Aerodactyl out in time.
While I'm excited about more pokemon challenges, don't push yourself too much for it! I'm more than happy to keep watching the quality content on whatever schedule works best for you :)

Definitely down for a Jessie v James run. Honestly, though, I imagine Koffing doing much better because it gets Thunderbolt and a better STAB move. Ekans' Wrap is great, but it takes a long time.
My guess for the Bug and Grund types: Scizor and Steelix.

You could try butterfree Vs. Beedrill. Not the best Pokémon, but the comparison could be interesting
Butterfree wins that hands down. Sleep Powder + Psychic moves make Butterfree a far superior option over Beedrill, especially in Gens I and II. Butterfree gets access to Psychic, Psybeam, Solarbeam, Sleep Powder, Stun Spore, Poisonpowder, Mega Drain, etc. A Butterfree with the following moves: Sleep Powder, Psychic, Double Team, and Mega Drain would wipe the floor with Beedrill in a race.
10:31 Dig is even better on Charmander when it becomes Charizard. Opponent uses Earthquake while Charizard is digging? Doesn't matter, Charizard's flying type makes him immune to it.
The next video hint: Johto bug and ground pair. For those who haven't figured it out yet, Scisor and Steelix.

You could probably go faster just by beating every trainer. You get more exp, get overleveled and the time you waste beating those extra trainers is made up by the fact you one shot everything even later on

For pokes that need grinding, sure. For pokes that don't... Probably not.
I like that this goes up at the same time I'm comparing magby and elekid in firered (I like to make things hard for myself with weak pokemon)

@@yoshi6421 Elekid took longer but was in the level 80s due to struggling a lot with brock but not struggling with the elite 4
Magby finished quicker but had to be level 100 due to not struggling with the main game until the elite 4 who was a nightmare
Misty’s vs Brock’s teams in a race might be fun. Could limit it to mons they used in the first anime series or even to what they have in their gym, since they both have 2.
Brock’s team would be literal hell. I don’t know how you would beat misty or erika besides being 20-30 levels higher

Super close race, interesting that Magmar was doing less damage with Psychic than Electabuzz was at the same level, despite the same base stats. I wonder if the race was so close IVs even made a difference
They have the same Special so it would have too. The DVs in a race like this matter immensely
Electric types really have an easier time in the league, specially due to lorelei and lance's gyarados, that can cause trouble.

Fun fact- You only survived the self-destructing Hiker with Magmar because you burned Geodude. Burn cuts your attack in half, and self-destruct as a physical move is affected by that. The Geodude's self-destruct did 19 damage after being burned, and you survived the second self-destruct with 19 HP, if the first Geodude hadn't been burned you would have taken at least double damage meaning you would have fainted against the second self-destruct.
Also, while you didn't ask, if you want to know why body slam could paralyze Raichu, it's because Gen 1 is weird in it's status effect immunities. Instead of specific types being immune to status effects like in later generations, Gen 1 instead makes it so that you can't inflict a status effect on a pokemon with the same typing as the move in question (I believe moves that *only* deal status effects are the exception, like Thunder Wave), as a result while thunderbolt could never paralyze Raichu, Body Slam can as it's a normal move but conversely Body Slam can never paralyze a normal type.
Finally, I'm really enjoying your commentary! You do a really good job with things I feel and don't feel bad about all the earlier Venomoth issues, so many other challenge runners tend to also think it's a flying type, it's design just really doesn't make it's typing obvious.
Edit: A small tip that I noticed, against Dragonite thunderbolt would have been better than psychic. As a Dragon/Flying type Electric is neutral effectiveness so you'd be looking at STAB 95 power move giving it over 140 power instead of Psychic's 90 power, the low chance of a special drop isn't worth that (especially since critical hits ignore all stat changes). But you're doing a lot in both of these runs so I get that small things like this are easy to overlook, especially if you're not naturally inclined towards min-maxing haha.
And in terms of “how good Venomoth is anyway”, it’s as good as a bug/flying Pokémon right now. Apparently it gets really good in later generations.

That's not even fair though. I mean, a bug/poison vs electric/dark type? We all saw how weak at the knees electric makes the elite 4. Plus bug is absolute trash gen 1, and poison is meh at best.
If you do Jessie vs James you have to do Arbok and Lickitung vs Weezing and Victribel. Everyone always forgets about Lickitung and Victribel.
I think that Magmar has a great advantage by starting with ember while electabuzz doesn't have a STAB move until a higher level.
Brock's Pokemon have really low special though...
Gotta be careful digging around with charmander, if you accidentally run into some natural gas that tail will cause a massive explosion!

Now, that doesn't make any sense. Metal conducts electricity. Electricity does not do anything to the metal it's conducting through. If anything, Steel should have been immune to Electric attacks for that reason. But having two types immune to Electric would be a bit much.

As a kid who only ever played Blue and Gold versions, I always thought both Magmar and Electabuzz were Gen 2 pokemon only.
I think magmar takes this. Since both are nearly the same stat wise, electabuzz’s crit change may struggle when you don’t need a crit. Brock will put magmar ahead because of its special move. Magmar will struggle with misty and Giovanni, but electabuzz will struggle a little more I think even with psychic.
Having said that, I’m sure electabuzz wins this just based on the fact it’ll go first more consistently, which is a really important factor for these races.

Calculating STAB and effectiveness into base power makes it simply "power". Base power will always be 40 for Ember since, well, it's base power. Hence the name. Any other multipliers aren't in the base.
I always felt jynx was supposed to be part of the Magmar electabuzz duo. Like the legendary bird trio or at least an allusion to similar archetypes
The incorrect name calling is hurting my soul. Did anyone ever watch the anime?! They say literally every pokemon to exist in the anime correctly. Quite possibly the biggest one of all, is Ratatta. Its not "ra tat uh", its "rat uh ta".

If both of them had the secondary fighting type they were supposed to have but anyway Bruno opts for two Onix and doesn't rate highly Primeape.
Why does a psy trainer use a bug/poison type that is weak to her team?

I love fire types so i was rooting for magmar. Magmar really got screwed in the end. A rematch of these 2 with their evolved forms in platinum would be interesting. Magmortar vs Electavire.

Against Giovanni, Electabuzz may have won quite a bit earlier I think if you had taught it Reflect (from the Celadon Mart TM). This halves physical damage taken for the remainder of the fight in this gen (until switched out).
I believe you can save more time if you center in veridian before going to cinnabar, allowing you to dig out of Blaine's gym and warping to go for Giovanni

One of my favorite Pokémon experiences was going through Ruby with my beefed up squad. I refused to stay under-leveled as a kid, only taking on gyms when I’d one or two hit everything. I used to hang out around Mauville and refight trainers over and over.
My two biggest monsters were my Blaziken names Blitz and Machamp, I don’t recall his nickname. I went into the league with both of them in the mid-90s after my friend helped me evolve Machoke.
Squad was Blitz, Machamp, level 80s Groudon, Aggron, Dodrio (no idea why) and Sandslash (again, no idea why).
I should find my old cartridge and see if it still works.
Gotta re-edit Aerodactyl. Sorry about the inconvenience. I can really relate to needing to one or two shot everything as a kid!

Do you know about the “glitch” for the ghost Marowak? You use a poke doll and it completes the fight without needing the silph scope. Let’s you skip the rocket hideout in Celadon and is allowed in speed runs!

I agree with the other suggestions that Ninetails vs Arcanine would be fun!
Arcanine would win. It has way better stats in terms of offensive power. In Gens I and II especially, it was a great mixed attacker. Extremespeed, Flamethrower/Fire Blast, Hyper Beam/Double Edge/Body Slam, and Dig/Roar were great movesets to use for Arcanine. Ninetales couldn't compete with that.
In fact, even though Ninetales' moveset did get better in later gens, it still is inferior to Arcanine as it needs to set up with Nasty Plot to be a viable special attacker. Arcanine, in later gens, is capable of being a good physical or special attacker, depending on nature and EV investment, all on its own with no set up.
Everytime I see the list when Gen 1 Pokemon learn moves I get a headache. Then you look at stone evolution and wonder what's the point. Love Gen 1

I’d watch my newer stuff. It’s timed much more meticulously.
You said you thought the winner would be the pokemon easier to play through the game with. If you take all the rare candies at the beginning of the E4, Magmar loses no time to Elctabuzz there. So the only time that Electabuzz caught up significant time was at Giovanni- but they both beat Giovanni at almost the same level.
You said maybe Magmar took longer to level up because he had a less effective STAB move. That's only true up to level 55. They both arrive a Level 48 and grind to Level 60. So about half the experience gained is from 48 - 55 (55,000 points) and the other half is from 55 - 60, where they both have 95 power 100% accurate STAB moves. Was Magmar's 75 power 100% accurate Fire Punch really such a determent for those 7 levels that it cost Magmar 9 minutes 19 seconds? The difference in times between the two with rare candies is less than 6 minutes, so that 9 minutes difference in grinding for those 7 levels accounts for the entire margin of victory. It seems crazy that the difference between Firepunch and Thunderbolt for just 7 levels of grinding would make up the entire difference between them.
The main reason Magmar was slower is that it spent more attempts against Giovanni at each level. It was taking less damage and it felt like victory was close. If I repeated the challenge I'd likely get a signficantly closer time in that leg of the race.
