Painting German Blitzkrieg Infantry [28mm]

  • Blitz Germans! Here's how I painted them!
These are the plastic Warlord/Italeri models, but you could apply the techniques I've used in this video on pretty much any figure. Plastic or metal.
I'm pretty happy with how these figures turned out. Now I don't have to have battles with headless grey Germans! Or at least fewer of them... I only did 12 models. Probably not enough for a full bolt action army
I didn't mention it, but I painted a half track crew figure at the same time as these guys, which is a nice way to ensure your vehicle crews are consistent with your infantry.
    The paints I used were:
    Vallejo:
    Model Color:
70.830 - German Field Grey WWII
    70.976 - Buff
    70.836 - London Grey
70.979 - German Camo Dark Green
    70.985 - Hull Red
70.821 - German Camo Beige WWIII
    70.863 - Gunmetal Grey
    70.875 - Beige Brown
    70.862 - Black Grey
    70.876 - Brown Sand
    70.847 - Dark Sand
    Model Air:
    71.001 - White
    71.057 - Black
    71.007 - Camo Olive Green
    Game Air:
    72.757 - Bright Bronze
    72.755 - Polished Gold
    Army Painter:
    WP1136 - Dark Tone
    WP1135 - Strong Tone
    WP1134 - Soft Tone
    WP1139 - Blue Tone
    AK interactive:
    AK3012 - Light Flesh
    AK3013 - Highlight Flesh
    AK3073 - Red Brown Leather
    Secret Weapon:
    W024 - Drying Blood
    W005 - Flesh Wash

Herbert, that "bedroll" is called a zeltbahn. It's a type of small personal tent that was often used as a camouflage poncho. It's was typically printed in the famous German pea-dot pattern.

      @HerbertErpaderp  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Interesting. I'm sure I've seen them with the tent quarter worn as a poncho thing. I'm pretty sure the later war germans I have are wearing them. Didn't realise they rolled it up and carried it like that though.

Early war zeltbahns would be in the splinter pattern camo. Peadot was a late war camo pattern.

Not quite correct. Wehrmacht soldiers would always use a Zeltbahn in splinter camo. From the first day of the war to the last this was a standard issue item to a) create tents and b) guard the soldier from rainy weather when worn as a poncho. Around late 43 the so-called "swamp pattern" appeared, but it never replaced the splinter pattern entirely. This item was used throughout the enitre war.
It was not really comfy to wear, so most soldiers did not use it for camo-purposes alone if there was no specific order to do so.
The Waffen-SS had their own camo patterns (copyright-fights behind the scenes happened between different german army branches at the time actually) and the SS-Zeltbahn was always in oakleaf with one side with spring/green and the other side in autumn/orange. There was no official pea-dot version of it.

Love the painting videos! The more I watch your videos the more I am convinced I need an airbrush to help with large batches of minis.

As much as I don't like telling people what to buy... it really is a good time saving purchase.

Wonderful video! I truly enjoyed watching you paint these figures especially because I’m going to get them in the mail in a few days. I might try painting the pants the same color as the torso though.. hmmm not sure 😄

You've probably got them by now. I hope you enjoy them. Feel free to share in the discord and such if you want!

looking great, i usually fined with my warhammer that 5 infantry figures tends to be the optimum when it comes to batch painting.

I need to do a lot more steps when I paint.
Especially the highlights and the washes.
    Very educational.

Looks fantastic! Those big bags you mentioned are bags for maps which most likely would be worn by officers.

It's a bit unusual, at least for modelling videos. It's mostly because I was too sick to get this finished for Monday. The base making video was intented to be the random mid week extra video. Also it's friday for me! hueheu.
Good luck with your T-34/85! Feel free to share pics on the discord if you want. I'd be keen to see.

Haha I was just about to say there is a link to the discord. I guess it is a fair way down the page.
I don't have any new 1/72 or 1/76 stuff on hand to make a video about, but next time I go to the hobby shop I'll almost certainly get another S-Model kit.

Early war German pants were blueish grey, earlier they started making pants in the same colour as jackets. I think the colours you chose is correct enough as colour do change with time, wear, washing and there's always difference in manufacturing batches. I just think that jacket colour is boring, sorry... :( But very nice paintjob anyway!

For guns, Paint with the gun metal and then do a dark tone ink wash over it and it looks spot on.

Some people get aggressive when telling you your inaccurate painting is inaccurate?
I mean, here I am, painting Luftwaffe ground troops using The Great Escape as a reference, so I think I wouldn't be allowed to complain even if I did care

    • @HerbertErpaderp
      @HerbertErpaderp  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Haha It's surprising, and a bit confusing how seriously people take this kind of thing. And how personally they take it when people disagree with them. The spam/review filter catches almost all of it, which is nice.

Warning to anyone buying this Warlord Games kit! These minis are ridiculously small, and don't match other plastic minis that are far larger. This is my biggest complaint about WG. They do a great job of marketing and bringing new people into the hobby, but their miniatures are horribly inconsistent.
