Very nice hammer stone approach. It's a difficult situation. However, your platform set up was great. I love that Kentucky hornstone. Limestone cortex can be tricky. To undercut limestone of different grades is a challenge especially when the good chert can be a surprise due to it's composition. Remaining abo teaches us the true dispositions of organic approaches. Well done Sir!👍

I have purchased Kentucky hornstone with thick cortex like that before too in order to preserve as much Flint or chert whatever you want to call it I use a 4 inch side grinder with a diamond Stone cutting disc and used it to grind of the cortex it saved me a lot of time and headaches to get the cortex off and no wasted or broken Flint nodules some might say it's cheating i only use it on the one's that have overly thick cortex's good Kentucky horn stone is a rare commodity where I live if you use this method use safety goggles and a respirator or a face mask you do not want to inhale any of the chalk dust

I've had great success using dogwood to remove cortex like this. It doesn't crush the platforms and allows good transfer of energy through the cortex.

What are you calling the cortex not familiar with chert etc. Is it the other mineral like as in your case the lighter chalk stuff. Thanks

Doing that leg smasher because it works. That stone looks like poor grade tough work stuff. Best of luck to you

my brother inlaw found a stone, i told him not to crack it because it looked like a native hammer head, well he cracked it, i figured it was flint until i looked into it, the "outside" of it just scrapes right off so i thought that was weird, very interesting. he found a spot with a lot of these stones, ive been wanting to start knapping, maybe i need to go bring them home and try my luck

Nothing personal to the seller. "If", I sold you that chert, I would have given you extra to allowed for all that cortex. Some nodules just have more than others. Of course I have a Farm full of those nodules anyway. Can't grow corn, but I can grow the fire out of ROCKS!

The arrow points that I would like to learn to make would only be as big as a couple of thumb nails and could be made from debitage flakes. That stuff is an exercise in futility.

I believe this gentleman is seeking to isolate the largest biface he can. If it is a core technology desired to remove smaller flakes he has that ability also thru his bifacial reduction strategies. 👍

I've heard knappers say they like working hornstone. I didn't hear discussion regarding the cortex. What I've seen available for purchase didn't have a cortex like your rocks. Maybe a different supplier?

I used a very well known supplier, i'm not going to mention his name because i don't think he's really at fault and I dont want anyone to get the wrong idea. Hornstone was awesome to work once I got past the cortex, it's just getting past the cortex that is a pain in the neck...lol.

Maybe he'll see this, realize how much cortex he shipped and more closely. Good of you not to mention his name in this context if he's trustworthy. I'd do the same for my mechanic and hvac guy.

What crummy material. I am sure there is better flint somewhere.

I'm not sure how many pounds of material you paid for but the last little piece you were working on should have never been sent if you were paying for it. There is nothing in that piece that makes it even worth working, for the price that it cost. I have had some and it was nothing as bad as what you got.
