    I painted the whole car with smallest compressor (1hp- 9liter).... with small gun it was perfect, bigger 1.4 gun it make orange appeal due to not enough air volume... but I guess 50l with 4-5hp will work like magic...just play with settings of gun and dilute the paint to have uniform flux...

      I did it mostly panel by panel due to low spread of paint :))

    Right on Shaun,
    I was just talking to WJ Handy Dad about this.
    I was trying to convince him to get an "Ultra Quiet Air Compressor" like I have, and he was worried it wouldn't be big enough.

    Good video Shaun. Now I wonder if you could build a manifold and attach about 20 hoses to it and then have 20 healthy men blow into the hoses. Connect the paint gun to a hose in the middle of the manifold. I wonder how many people it would take to be able to provide enough volume and CFM to paint a car

    Good info, and easy to follow. The HP rating examples for the pancake and 20-30 gallon compressors seem a bit inflated to me, especially for single stage 120 volt units, are you referring to the older ratings before manufacturers had to meet standard requirements.

    • @thisguysgarage
      @thisguysgarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      great question Michael, i use them for reference ,by tank size i was referring to the scope of the size of the repair you are able to paint without running out of air, the hp ratings are all over the place from compressor to compressor, but the volume of air remains constant, the hp would certainly have a lot to do with air recovery. hope this answers it, if not don't hesitate to follow up! ty for taking the time.

    What would you charge to paint a trailer with a 6X8 bed that is 14 feet from the rear to the tongue? I'm a disabled Combat Vet and wanna get back into painting. I served in the Air Force and Army. When I was in the Air Force, I painted F-!6s and A-10s. So, I know what I'm doing. I also understand that you gotta pay for experience. So, what would be a fair price?

    • @thisguysgarage
      @thisguysgarage  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey to be reasonable if you are just getting back into it , time is money ,so if you can get the job done in 20 hours, figure your time is worth 30/40 per hour, I usually judge material costs at the same rate as labor so probably would ballpark 12-16 hundred dollars. Total

    • @thisguysgarage
      @thisguysgarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you would need to find a sprayer that fit those parameters ,like a touchup gun for example . 8 gallon is not a lot of volume but the 5.5 might give you enough recovery to do a bit of painting. hope that answered your question . start with a small job and you can judge from there.

      if the paint on the jams is good there is really no reason to repaint if they will clean up and you can do a good job masking. i would always suggest painting car assembled . the air quality on the day can change your paint texture so recapturing the same look repeatedly can be difficult ,but not impossible . i have painted jams without removing panels .just mask well. if you already have it apart ,do the jams reassemble for good adjustment before painting. let me know if you have any other questions ,love it!

      I would use it. No need to buy bigger unless you have a need or bigger projects in the future. 40ish psi for an undercoating gun with a 25 foot hose if memory serves me , longer hose than that turn up the pressure Guage about 1 psi per foot, will get you in the ballpark 👍

    If your painting at home make sure you check with your state environmental rules. Certain size cups you can only use at home if you don't have a paint booth. If you have a nosey neighbor and they start complaining About over spray you can be fined. And make sure you have a pl!ce where udispose of ur extra clear coat which should just harden up but dispose of ur chemicals the right way. If your doing all this at home without a paint booth.

    Horsepower on a 60 gallon compressor matters i think... you have a 3.7 hp 60 gallon cp or a 5 to 6 horsepower 60 gallon cp it makes a difference im not sure if you could paint a allover with a 3.7 horsepower 60 gallon or not? jury is out on that the air pressure would come back up quick enough before u would get a pass done or if it would build fast enough before u would apply the second coat which is important sometimes hot weather or reducer your using in a singlestage paint can require a quick flashtime and when you start that second coat would that 3.7 hp motor have the compressor built back up enough for you to truly lay down that second coat??????????????? Your thoughts sir?? I have no doubts the 5 to 6 horsepower compressor would do it i really think your fine with that one

    • @thisguysgarage
      @thisguysgarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      recovery is an issue, we had a 3hp 60 gallon in my dads shop 30 years ago for years before hvlp was a thing ,recovery wasn't as big an issue with a conventional gun ,but still an issue. there is always flash time between coats so the compressor will be full when starting your second coat , but like the smaller compressors it really comes down to the square footage you are painting ,if you are spraying a Miata you wont have an issue, if you are painting a panel van with lots of surface area then the compressor will be playing catch up, as far as temperature that can be controlled with your solvent and activator. make sense?
      strategy becomes involved
